i have a lot of trouble believing in the reality of the newt surge, since even the freepers seem to find him distasteful. this is markedly different than their attitude toward cain, who they seemed really enthusiastic about until his libido got in the way

Newt’s ‘surge’ is a media creation if you ask me. When Cain’s woman problems were first getting traction, quite a few reporters speculated that it would cause primary voters to take another look at Newt. The worse Cain’s situation got, the more the media talked about Gingrich.

And lo and behold - Cain’s problems force him out of the race and Newt is suddenly polling a lot better. Why?

Because the media pointed primary voters in that direction, and they were dumb enough to go along with the suggestion.
