re: #87 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

We were talking about the decline in public education that really accelerated after Reagan. This is part of the price we pay for neglecting something that vital.

Part of it I imagine could be attributed to the mists of time, in that the longer back in the past an event occurs, the less people seem to know about it. The genocides perpetrated by Christianity on themselves and others comes to mind.

In this country things are supported or neglected based on perceived patriotic value. The best example I can think of is Texas mythology surrounding The Alamo. The story is a handful of plucky fighters held off a much superior and better-armed force long enough that reinforcements could arrive to win the war.

They don’t tell you what the Battle of the Alamo or the larger revolution in Texas was about: The revolution was about creating a right to hold people as property in a nation where slavery was illegal.

During my life though conservatives have been actively undermining education by seizing control of school boards.
