1st amendment separation of church and state ought to be applied here; the state issues civil unions to whomever, and that’s it. But the fanatics on all sides want power & won’t let it drop. That’s my take on it anyway.

Gay people who want to be married by the state are not ‘fanatics’, they just want equal rights.
