I think Matthew is my favorite book of the Bible: A straightforward, consistent and fast-paced account of Jesus’s career as He heals the sick and feeds the hungry, then goes on to annoy the

Christians always suggest that people start reading the Bible with the book of John, but they’re looking at it from a Christian point of view, where John writes some of the most poetic and deep imagery of the Good News. Non-Christians won’t understand most of the metaphors. It’d be far easier to start with Matthew or Luke to present just the facts, and dive into the heavy theology as a person becomes familiar with the subject matter.
