I had a friend from Kentucky, and whenever he traveled around the US, he delighted in challenging people with the following question:

“How do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky? Is it pronouced ‘Lewis-ville’, ‘Lew-ee-ville’ or ‘Lew-vull’?”

People would offer their various guesses. If he were before a large enough group, he would get a vote going to see who could get the proper pronunciation.

For those who don’t already know, the capital of Kentucky is both spelled and pronounced “Frankfort”.

It’s that way with lots of states. Thanks to lack of civics/ geography in grade schools, I’d be willing to bet half the populace less than 30 years of age thinks New York City is the capital of New York
