The best biography of him I’ve ever read (and I am something of a Burton scholar) is called “The Devil Drives” by Fawn Brodie. There are others, of course.

The scar he received in battle was from an enemy spear that went in one side of his face and out the other. It knocked out his back teeth on both sides, split his palate, and nearly choked him on his own blood. He continued the fight, with the long spear through his face, point, haft, and all, and led his men until the foe was defeated. Only then did he stop and get medical aid.
