I’m going to respond to that completely respectfully and thoughtfully. I am actually not snarking about your question. It’s a good one I think.

I think the bottom line on how is Breitbart taken seriously is that he is a base fear and smut monger. The real problems of America are complex and scary. They require a lot more thought and understanding and basic homework than the average American is willing to put into them to even address at a basic level.

However, every American can understand being afraid of some boogey man. Every American can understand penis pics. In a nation of people with 13 year old mentalities, producing gutter tripe to fear monger, or hate monger, or in this case smut monger is easily digestible and makes for a great outlet for inchoate rage. It focuses the stupid masses away from real problems and repaints the world in an over-simplified black and white with easy answers, easy enemies and simple minded foolishness.

This makes Breitbart important because he is a rabble rouser extrordinar and just the jerk to help make certain no real problems get addressed. Despite all of Weiner’s obvious flaws for example, he was asking serious questions about the financial relationship between the Koch brothers and Justice Thomas.

A dirty supreme court justice is vastly more important than errrant sexual foibles, but, it requires thought and investigation and looking into dark places. The penis pics on the other hand…

Well you get my point.

It is important to take out Breitbart, not just because he is scum and a malicious liar and an utterly worthless person, but because he is a political operative who perversely effects the tone of American politics. Of course,, it is not as if others will not take his place… but actually enforceing the libel and slander laws and putting some of these cretins in the poor house will still help tremendously. And last but not least, even stupid Americans who obsess about penises hate being suckers.
