Another thing I might add is to the extent that Republican policies are not seen as favoring particular identity groups in the same way as Democrats promote such groups of voters (e.g. union members, feminist women, GBLT, African-American, Hispanic, etc.) the Republicans are at a disadvantage in marketing to such voters.
That’s purely because the GOP has increasingly become the party of old white Christian conservative men in the South who attend church at least once a week. I’m not making that up; that is the only demographic in which they haven’t sustained a loss.
They’re a special interest group all right, just one, and one that is literally dying out.
