My experience was horrible, and very confusing, trying to “do the right thing” with beautiful machines. Many friends wanted me to just have them melted down, but they were Uncle’s precious things. I wanted them to go to someone who would value them.

Right there with ya’, plus on top of being precious heirlooms with intrinsic nostalgic value, they’re fuckin’ money. Friends don’t let friends burn wads of cash just so they can feel all morally superior. Is the idea that a few less guns in an already over saturated market is going to tip the scales back towards a life saved? Because if so, those friends are ridiculously deluded.
