GM and Chrysler (two of the biggest employers in my part of the country) did go bankrupt. The only thing the bailout accomplished was to push their own pension debacle down the road a few years. We’ll be having this argument again in a decade.

Chrysler was going under in the late 70’s. We had a chance to just let them go and retrain their workers. But we lacked the political will to do it then, and we still lack the political will.
