Hm. There’s not really a succinct phrase for what I mean:
when someone not only lies to others and themselves, but that their self-identity is so staked upon a single aspect—tribal identity, belief of one “true” thing—that they actually can can construct a self-deception transmute it into a “true” belief…all because the lie is necessary to maintaining a more important belief.
