Malignant hacks like Levin (and Coulter and Limbaugh) have been core to this mess by building up the whole wall narrative and promoting the idea that shutdowns are winnable.

The Democrats cave to the GOP and these people get enabled and emboldened. Especially when both of these narratives the right has held near and dear to their hearts have failed in the court of public opinion.
