Tech Note: JQuery Reversion Syndrome

Science • Views: 2,172

It’s back to jQuery 1.2.6 again; the new version needs just a bit more tweaking and tuning and bug eradication to be all it can be. We discovered a couple of spots in our code where version 1.3.1 was executing some DOM lookups much more slowly than the older version, even causing script timeout alerts in some browsers.

The new version of jQuery has some great features, especially the live event binding calls that let you automatically assign delegated event handlers to DOM elements created dynamically (like our spinoff links, for example). One or two more bug-fix releases and it should be ready for the lizard pit.

Argh! In the Dallas Morning News there's a huge man-made global warming piece by a nut that insists the science is settled, and it's already too late. (Unless we stop making it political, and give in to all their political ideas, of course.)

Still takes a while for the site to load on my old P3 650Ghz Win XP websurfing machine. Probably just me though. I do notice that on most sites, it's the ads that take so long. You webmasters are the only ones that can complain and make them fix that.

Oh, and, HopenChange Forever! :P

(Document Object Model) A specification for a programming interface (API) from the W3C that allows programs and scripts to update the content, structure and style of HTML and XML documents. A DOM implementation in a Web browser provides a core set of functions that let scripts access browser elements such as windows and history. Additional functions allow updating of HTML style sheets and XML content.

It Makes the Document Look Like a Database
DOM is especially useful for XML documents because it converts the document in memory into a hierarchical node tree that looks like a database record. The node tree allows updating in a similar manner to database updating, making data exchange between XML documents and databases more straightforward. Without DOM turning the document into an object model and handling the updating, the text and tags in an XML document would have to be scanned sequentially and rearranged by the program. DOM was first introduced in late 1998.

When will LGF render well and allow dings and logins and things on mobile browsers with scripts turned off? I love LGF and I know Charles puts a hell of a lot into it, it's tough to check for compatibility with mobile browsers and mobile user-friendliness still isn't massive so I'm just asking for whatever it's worth. I find LGF isn't too bad in mobile Opera but even then the site clearly wasn't designed with phones in mind. But it's a growing market and a lot of sites even have a mobile version.

Al Gore's previous racket, "Re-Inventing Government", or REGO as his horrible boring movie was called, didn't get very far, nor was it HOllywood sexy enough.

Then Gore tried to launch the Macarena dance craze, but he ended it pre-emptively at the Rio conference on something or other when he took the stage and danced.

Man, that is a HUGE list! For those unwilling to follow the link, here are the folks called into Fitzgerald's office:

Among those served with subpoenas were:

David Axelrod, Obama's "Karl Rove" and the biggest surprise on the list. Obama's team issued a report in December that said his staff had no "inappropriate contact" with Blago, so the inclusion of Axelrod is a bit of a shock.

Valerie Jarrett, Blago's "Senate Candidate 1", a real estate management executive and political hack of the first order. Her ties to failed and fraudulent real estate deals in Chicago were the subject of numerous investigations and should have instantly disqualified her for any public office.

Rahm Emanuel was already deeply involved in the case with some reports describing as many as 21 conversations with Blago's office during the period in question.

Tony Rezko, Obama's first advocate, fundraiser and adviser, was convicted last year on numerous charges related to kickbacks, is awaiting sentencing. Rezko is "cooperating with authorities, FBI Agent Daniel Cain said in an affidavit."

Others served include:

• Patricia Blagojevich, first lady
• River Realty, her former employer
• Friends of Blagojevich, the governor's campaign committee
• Citizens for Blagojevich, his former committee
• Robert Blagojevich, the governor's brother and campaign chairman
• Christopher Kelly, former adviser and fundraiser for governor
• Alonzo Monk, former Blagojevich chief of staff, now a lobbyist
• Milan Petrovic, lobbyist and campaign fundraiser
• John Wyma, former Blagojevich adviser, now a lobbyist
• Paul Rosenfeld, lobbyist
• J.B. Pritzker, wealthy Chicagoan whom Blagojevich might have considered to replace Obama in U.S. Senate
• Gery Chico, former Chicago school board president and one-time U.S. Senate candidate
• Doug Scofield, former Blagojevich adviser, now a consultant
• Scofield Communications
• Service Employees International Union
• Tom Balanoff, SEIU Illinois president
• Change to Win, an SEIU-affiliated activist group
• Sam Zell, owner of the Chicago Tribune
• Nils Larsen, an adviser to Zell
• The Chicago Tribune
• The Tribune Co., the newspaper's parent company
• Michael Vondra, owner of asphalt and construction companies
• Gerald Krozel, vice president of a concrete company
• John Johnston, president of Balmoral Park racetrack
• Fred Yang, Washington, D.C.-based Blagojevich consultant
• Garin Hart Yang Research Group, Yang's firm
• William Knapp, Washington, D.C.-based Blagojevich consultant
• Squire, Knapp & Dunn, Knapp's firm
• Doug Sosnick, political consultant

Blago's "Senate Candidate 3", Jan Schakowsky, was not served with a subpoena, but will have some questions of her own to answer in the days to come.

Hamas tried to hijack ambulances during Gaza war

"I knew the Israelis were watching me because I could see the red laser beam in the ambulance and on me, on my body," he said.

Getting out of the ambulance and entering the house, he saw there were three Hamas fighters taking cover inside. One half of the building had already been destroyed.

"They were very scared, and very nervous … They dropped their weapons and ordered me to get them out, to put them in the ambulance and take them away. I refused, because if the IDF sees me doing this I am finished, I cannot pick up any more wounded people.

"And then one of the fighters picked up a gun and held it to my head, to force me. I still refused, and then they allowed me to leave."

Mr Shriteh says Hamas made several attempts to hijack the al-Quds Hospital's fleet of ambulances during the war.

I strongly suspect this is video of Hamas fighters using an ambulance....

It's blurry but watch it in full screen mode.

I heard the context of the quote several days ago. I don't remember all of it, but O'Reilly pretty much said that Rush knew what he was saying and how it would be used in order to generate the very publicity he was getting. IIRC, Rush basically said that if Obama pushed hard to force this country into Obama's socialist ideals, Rush hoped that he failed at it.

The do use visible lasers sometimes because it lets people know they are being watched. I heard of an American psyops program that invloved nothing but a drone with a visible laser that would follow a single fighter/terrorist. All of a sudden he was very unpopular with his friends.

The article is a little out of date. He was restored by the Vatican yesterday. It's disgraceful.

I think I remember reading about these 4. I seem to remember that they disputed *updating* the RCC, in particular Vatican II. They were defrocked, after a fashion, as being way too hardline. (if it is the group I am recalling).

It's a distraction! Bush's failed policies! Smart diplomacy! No direct contact! A conspiracy to raise taxes! Witch hunt!

No, as much as I detest Microsoft, I don't think they put it out thinking it was a failure and therefore should be pushed out the door as quickly as possible. I just think they realized that they had no revenue stream coming from operating system sales and they couldn't keep the company afloat without something selling. The problem is, they set the hardware bar for Vista so high no one could really run it.

The problem is, they have no sense.

They should have annual releases for people to spend on.

But the hard part is finding new features people would actually want. It's probably easier to do the development, than the finding. Microsoft has never been known for anything resembling creativity.

I think part of that problem comes from trying to develop via committee. Most good features I have seen in my time in software development start with one person coming up with the idea and programming it. Then, the committee (a very small one) reviews it and refines it. Trying to do the first process in committee rarely ever works.

Afghan President: U.S. Forces killed 16 civilians

(Drudge -> My Way News)

This one is on Obama.

Except the press is still spinning. Yes, the headline is technically correct, but written in a way that makes the average reader think, "Oh my goodness. We killed civilians."

Several paragraphs down you read that the US says we killed 15 terrorists, including one woman with a weapon.

But you would never see a piece with the headline "15 militants killed, US says," and then several paragraphs into the story read the first hint that others made claims that all the dead were actually civilians.

Man, that is a HUGE list! For those unwilling to follow the link, here are the folks called into Fitzgerald's office:

Shocked that Obama's self analysis was not considered enough to end the matter. Remember in Catch-22 when Doc Daneeka was hurt that the Army hadn't been satisfied with his word on whether he was fit for military service.

"... Things couldn't have been better, then look what happened. They had to send a guy from the draft board around to look me over. I was Four-F. I had examined myself pretty thoroughly and discovered I was unfit for military service. You'd think my word would be enough, wouldn't you, since I was a doctor in good standing with my county medical society and with my local Better Business Bureau. But no, it wasn't, and they sent this guy around just to make sure I really did have one leg amputated at the hip and was helplessly bedridden with incurable rheumatoid arthritis. Yossarian, we live in an age of distrust and deteriorating spiritual values. It's a terrible thing" Doc Daneeka protested in a voice quavering with strong emotion. "It's a terrible thing when even the word of a licensed physician is suspected by the country he loves."

We've covered this and covered this. There is fail and there is fail.

There were those that wished to see America fail just to make Bush look bad. They took glee at bad news in Iraq, or in the economy, or when other countries said they hated us. Their hate for Bush was easily more than their love of country. They threw parties to celebrate the death of the 2000th American troop, for pity's sake!

That is NOT what we're talking about here.

The other kind of fail is hoping that the economy and the country stay strong because the harmful policies of Obama either fail to pass or fail to have the effect he wants. THAT kind of fail.

And if Obama sends our men and women to fight somewhere, even someplace I disagree with, I hope we win.

I've been thinking about this. My first reaction was that they would be torn between their automatic response to vilify America and their love of the O.

But lately I don't think there is a disconnect. The more they continue to vilify the military, the more "justification" Obama will have for surrender and future cuts in military spending and strength.
