Europe Considers Welcoming 60 Gitmo Detainees

World • Views: 3,098

Europe has been overwhelmingly sympathetic to the terror suspects imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, so this seems like a very good idea.

France is pushing for European Union countries to take 60 of the detainees deemed innocent but at risk of torture in their home country, according to a report by the German magazine Der Spiegel that was picked up by Reuters.

Notice that the Europeans are only interested in the ones “deemed innocent.” Naturally.

I like the general flailing over Guantanamo. Everyone was up in arms and demanded we close the prison. But when asked for viable alternatives… Cricket Chirps. There’s a larger and longer argument against Liberalism there. Decision making methods independent of consequences. I think Europe is going to balk at taking them, like Australia. They’d rather be part of the problem than be part of the solution.

60 of the detainees deemed innocent

“Deemed innocent”?!? By who? Is there some secret information that Europeans possess about the factual innocence of Guantanamo detainees?

Or is it, as I suspect, wishful thinking?

33 William  Sun, Jan 25, 2009 9:56:58am

This just in:

Two ex-Guantanamo inmates appear in Al-Qaeda video

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Two men released from the US “war on terror” prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have appeared in a video posted on a jihadist website, the SITE monitoring service reported.

One of the two former inmates, a Saudi man identified as Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri, or prisoner number 372, has been elevated to the senior ranks of Al-Qaeda in Yemen, a US counter-terrorism official told AFP.

Three other men appear in the video, including Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi, identified as an Al-Qaeda field commander. SITE later said he was prisoner No. 333.

A Pentagon spokesman, Commander Jeffrey Gordon, on Saturday declined to confirm the SITE information.

“We remain concerned about ex-Guantanamo detainees who have re-affiliated with terrorist organizations after their departure,” said Gordon.

“We will continue to work with the international community to mitigate the threat they pose,” he said.

On the video, al-Shihri is seen sitting with three other men before a flag of the Islamic State of Iraq, the front for Al-Qaeda in Iraq.

“By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for,” al-Shihri was quoted as saying.

Al-Shiri was transferred from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia in 2007, the US counter-terrorism official said.

The other men in the video are identified as Commander Abu Baseer al-Wahayshi and Abu Hureira Qasm al-Rimi (also known as Abu Hureira al-Sana’ani).

The Defense Department has said as many as 61 former Guantanamo detainees — about 11 percent of 520 detainees transferred from the detention center and released — are believed to have returned to the fight.

The latest case highlights the risk the new US administration faces as it moves to empty Guantanamo of its remaining 245 prisoners and close the controversial detention camp within a year.

re: #24 CyanSnowHawk

Devil’s Island… because for all the talk about the Europeans taking these detainees, they’re really going to end up somewhere where those detainees will be treated far worse.

That’s really what this is about. As bad as everyone slams the US for Gitmo, all the other options are far worse. The US can’t send some to certain countries because of concerns over torture (that’s the real fingernail pulling variety with physical harm), refusal of the countries to accept them (China refuses to accept a bunch of Uighurs), and so these detainees are in Gitmo where they can do no further harm to US national security.

Hoping that the rehabilitation programs in Saudi Arabia and Yemen are going to keep these detainees on the straight and narrow is a pipe dream at best, and a fool’s errand in reality; both countries have seen detainees end up back in the jihad. That’s not exactly confidence inspiring.

Considering that mass murderers in Europe frequently serve 15 years or less in prison (a study showed that the average “life sentence” in England was 10 years), even if the detainees get convicted, they’ll be let out for time served. Seriously.

And then given government benefits, a free apartment, and permission to bring 4 wives into the country.

re: #52 reine.de.tout

And for those who think that the standard criminal justice system is up to the task, a convicted terrorist who had a 30 year sentence handed down in 1993, is now getting released February 19, 2009 - on good behavior. He had plotted to blow up a bunch of Israeli-related buildings in NYC.

In 1973, a young terrorist named Khalid Duhham Al-Jawary entered the United States and quickly began plotting an audacious attack in New York City.

He built three powerful bombs — bombs powerful enough to kill, maim and destroy — and put them in rental cars scattered around town, near Israeli targets.

The plot failed. The explosive devices did not detonate, and Al-Jawary fled the country, escaping prosecution for nearly two decades — until he was convicted of terrorism charges in Brooklyn and sentenced to 30 years in federal penitentiary.

But his time is up.

In less than a month, the 63-year-old Al-Jawary is expected to be released. He will likely be deported; where to is anybody’s guess. The shadowy figure had so many aliases it’s almost impossible to know which country is his true homeland.

Al-Jawary has never admitted his dark past or offered up tidbits in exchange for his release. Much of Al-Jawary’s life remains a mystery — even to the dogged FBI case agent who tracked him down.

What are the chances he goes back to his terror ways? 50/50? I fully expect to be hearing from him again.

People tend to think that the Great Depression hit all at once, on Black Friday. But it did not, it unfolded over a period of several years, in a series of setbacks, each one bigger than the last.

Folks who think this will ‘go away’ in a few months, or even a year or two, don’t understand the scope of the problem.

Challenges loom as Obama seeks space weapons ban

President Barack Obama’s pledge to seek a worldwide ban on weapons in space marks a dramatic shift in U.S. policy while posing the tricky issue of defining whether a satellite can be a weapon.

Moments after Obama’s inauguration last week, the White House website was updated to include policy statements on a range of issues, including a pledge to restore U.S. leadership on space issues and seek a worldwide ban on weapons that interfere with military and commercial satellites.

The market’s already priced in that the economy sucks and expects bad numbers. More bad news isn’t a surprise.

/DOW 7392 is The Alamo and, IMO, it’ll hold

Structural collapse, hard to make any call at all. I strongly suspect treasury-directed market manipulations supporting the Dow have been going on for some years now, but if so, will they continue under the Obamanation? Market still has apparently no control over naked short-sellers with billion-dollar purses, and any market tends to overshoot rational levels. And then, if any of these trillion-dollar rescue packages misfires, as they most certainly will, katie bar the door, but that would happen later in the Obamanation, and might result in spikes of inflation that would “raise” the apparent indices. We are in for one helluva ride all over the countryside, is my view.

And then, even if they were technically or truly “innocent” before, they’ll be free to put into practice the indoctrination they received from their brothers at Gitmo.

Presumably in that case they wouldn’t settle for burning a few cars.

And for those who think that the standard criminal justice system is up to the task, a convicted terrorist who had a 30 year sentence handed down in 1993, is now getting released February 19, 2009 - on good behavior. He had plotted to blow up a bunch of Israeli-related buildings in NYC.

What are the chances he goes back to his terror ways? 50/50? I fully expect to be hearing from him again.

It is indeed always an indication that one has engaged in “good behavior” when one has plotted to blow up buildings. (heavy sarcasm)

Hi Killian - from your link:

Moments after Obama’s inauguration last week, the White House website was updated to include policy statements on a range of issues, including a pledge to restore U.S. leadership on space issues and seek a worldwide ban on weapons that interfere with military and commercial satellites.
It also promised to look at threats to U.S. satellites, contingency plans to keep information flowing from them, and what steps are needed to protect spacecraft against attack.

[emphasis added, realwest]
I’ve not been having a great day today, but I don’t see what’s wrong with that statement. It looks as if Obama is looking to protect our military and commercial satellites and our spacecraft.

The one’s they are talking about would be the Chinese muslims who the Bush Administration acknowledged a long time ago were innocent, but refused to send them to China because the Chinese government will torture them (because they are separatists).

They did train with the Taliban and Al Qaeda, but everyone accepts they were not training for terrorists acts, only to learn how to fight the Chinese government.

Many nations were willing to take them but the Chinese have been putting some seriously intense diplomatic pressure on everyone who considers it.

It was also thought a few of the nations considering taking them told Bush ‘no’ so that they could store it up as diplomatic favor for Obama.

“Deemed innocent”?!? By who? Is there some secret information that Europeans possess about the factual innocence of Guantanamo detainees?

Or is it, as I suspect, wishful thinking?

Maybe the logic goes like this: The USA is deemed guilty (of everything under the sun) by certain powers that be in Europe, etc. therefore, the terrorists, captured by the USA, are deemed innocent (no matter what the hell they’ve done).

I say, send them to France and let the French build plenty of fire-proof garages for their very small cars.

Or, they take 100 years or so recorded climate data out of millions of years of actual climate, and figure they can model what is going to happen.

Or they make shit up.

The problem with Antarctica, though, is that has so few weather stations. So what the computer had been programmed to do, by a formula not yet revealed, was to estimate the data those missing weather stations would have come up with if they had existed. In other words, while confirming that the satellite data have indeed shown the Antarctic as cooling since 1979, the study relied ultimately on pure guesswork, to show that in the past 50 years the continent has warmed – by just one degree Fahrenheit.

Interview is not set up yet. They called me back (after 1 1/2 months) simply to make sure I was still available. They said possibly this week, maybe Tuesday.

I live just 3 miles from this company, so, I can be there in a jiffy if they call me.

I had a Mac in 1984, so I really don’t give a fig one way or the other. Blew a power supply in under 30 days, so so much for MY first impression of superior Apple quality.

I paid the overprice for a PowerMac when they came out and I realized that it’s all Chinese products.

Then I went to work for a major PC manufacturer. I don’t believe in biting the hand that feeds me, and I have no problems buying my products, LOL.

If Apple ever develops an installed base of sufficient size, some hacker somewhere will give them cooties. No OS is perfect.

I will give them (Apple) props for having the ‘nads to abandon backwards-compatibility after System 6.0 and gig all their hardware owners. Many Windows problems are based on having to be somewhat compatible with ancient DOS ideas.

Indeed.

I don’t blame Microsoft, because much of how they develop has to follow legacy for a myriad of reasons. Unfortunately though it has led to the worst OS’s on the planet, and users have gotten used to computers taking up more time than they should save.

People have been saying that about OSX since it came out, that eventually when it reaches a certain market share it will be virus time, but I’ve been on OSX since the beginning, and it only gets faster. With no virus trouble… and I have 3 macs with thousands and thousands of hours connected to the web.

People have gotten used to MS, and used to dealing with huge OS trouble. Once I switched, my tolerance for OS trouble has vanished, so I can get pretty frustrated constantly repairing the PC’s at work.

Is your computer turned on at 3:00 a.m.?

/if not the previously scheduled scan will start running the next time you boot up

I never turn mine off except for very occasional quick powerdowns/powerups and changing parts.; less stressful to the hardware.

Personally, I think any senator or representative supporting closing G’tmo should take a ratable share of the prisoners to their district. President O is “preaching” responsibility, so let his supporters step to the plate and take some.

Yes.. its a great idea! (NOT!) Lets let the jihadis have asylum throughout the Western World. That way we can save carbon credits on their travel to do terrorist attacks against the West! I’m sure the Gitmo released guy who blew himself up in Afghanistan and the other douchebags who rejoined AlQaeda were deemed innocent too. After hearing how many iranians,Saudis, and other nationalities my brother and other troops have killed and captured in Iraq and Afghanistan, the only ones I “deem releasable” are the ones already taking a dirtnap.
Maybe we should put them in San Quentin or that Sheriff in Arizon’s prison system’s general population. I’m sure waterboarding, panties on the head, and loud music would be paradise compared to facing gang-bangers, murderers, and racists everyday. Then all of them could become “72 Virgins” to Bubba and his friends.

My mother, how uses her computer for email and nothing else, has MUCH more problems with her PC than I do. And I use mine a LOT, and for a myriad of things.

Even switching her from 98SE to XP only marginally reduced the problems she has. I swear the woman is cursed. ;)

Some people have a special knack. There are a few like that in the office. I’m sort of the default IT person, since I’m in operations and live near our financial office. I do swear sometimes that as soon as I leave, these folks are throwing their PC’s down the stairs or something.

How much you want to be that France will take NONE while wanting the rest of the EU to take ‘em?

History has shown betting on France for anything is a losing proposition. I wouldn’t entertain the bet for France taking 1 of the 60.
I’d suggest that they took them all and ship them immediately to the French Foreign Legion for indoctrination or to that French penal island used in the McQueen and Hoffman movie, Papillon…ooops, nevermind, Papillon escaped from there, didn’t he.

Sure, but most people don’t modify their off-the-shelf computers. It doesn’t matter how much ram or processor one has- you shouldn’t want something unnecessarily eating up your processor time.

For all ‘y’all VISTA OS’ers out there, there’s always “Ready Boost” - the “Afterburner” as close as a compatible usb flash drive. Keep it in mind, it works.

I had a heck of a time removing Norton AV when I switched to McAfee. Had to resort to a tool the IT boys at work gave me.

BTW, I use McAfee because the ISP provides it and I’m cheap.

Norton will expire in two weeks - I’m hoping to install AVG then.

I’m on Senator Inhofe’s email list. This just in:

INHOFE-BOREN-FALLIN-COLE -SULLIVAN -LUCAS SAY NO TO TERRORISTS COMING TO OKLAHOMA

Senator Jim Inhofe, a Senior Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.), a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Mary Fallin (R-Okla.), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), and Rep John Sullivan (R-Okla.) joined together on Friday in a united front to express outrage at President Obama’s decision to shut down Guantanamo Bay, possibly leading to terrorists coming to Oklahoma.

Senator Inhofe: “President Obama’s decision to shut down Guantanamo Bay could have a devastating impact on our national security and is simply unacceptable. Through my position on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I will lead the fight in the Senate to prevent these terrorists from coming to my state or any state on American soil. My constituents in Oklahoma deserve to feel safe, and we will not feel safe with some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world - men who would kill thousands for an extremist ideology - on our soil. I will fight this decision, and Oklahomans will not be subject to this type of insecurity. I will work hand and hand with the rest of the Oklahoma delegation, and the other 93 Members of the Senate who in 2007 resolved that detainees housed at Guantanamo should not be released into American society, nor should they be transferred stateside into facilities in American communities and neighborhoods.”

But I am no expert on XP or Vista, so don’t quote me. ;)

Norton is a resource hog that slows a system more than the bugs its supposed to keep out’
Its removal is a ridiculous pain in the rear or used to be. (Had to use the oem disk to remove)
AVG is a great free solution, but just for fun I am trying Windows Defender to see how it does as well.

Only a small percentage of the detainees are dangerous terrorists. Many were enemy combatants or sympathizers for the Taliban, more the a few turned in for a bounty by rival tribes and we have no idea of the level of their guilt. The problem will be to sort out those that we can send home, to other countries and which to keep locked up for life.

What was unfactual about the detainees that deserved ding down ? The government says they are mostly enemy combatants. Here’s the list, lots of bad guys, Taliban and the like, but only a handful are 9-11 style terrorists. Only 10 have been charged to date.

list..

When a worked for a major computer retail store back in the late 90’s, I remember more than once having Microsoft employees walk in with company credit cards and buy thousands of dollars of Mac stuff.

The Lesbian couple was a real hoot. They bought $37,000+, and I got one hefty commission since I pointed out where to find what they were looking for. The rest of the sales staff didn’t want to have a thing to do with ‘em.

Why, were they using the store computers to find lesbian porn?

I had that exact same thought last week when this story first broke. I was daydreaming about all the prisoners being given some sleep aid in their soup and once they were all asleep they were implanted. Then my thoughts moved to my cat’s implant and the moment was lost!

People tend to think that the Great Depression hit all at once, on Black Friday. But it did not, it unfolded over a period of several years, in a series of setbacks, each one bigger than the last.

Precisely, and it lasted almost 11 years. And what kind of economic policies were being exercised during that time by Roosevelt? The same kind that our current administration and congress wants adopted asap
today.

NIce chart but it only goes to 2006. What has the index done since then?

Down less than “an inch” with about 4 inches to go until home prices return to historical norms, where income (as opposed to exotic mortgages) can actually support home prices.

If, in the future, the assholes released from Gitmo are found to be involved in acts of terrorism, can we hold Obama directly responsible, and lay any deaths at his doorstep?

I believe it’s highly probable, some of these “insurgents” will be trouble in the future.

385 uptight  Sun, Jan 25, 2009 3:12:13pm

The message from all of this is as simple as the solution.

The Message
Do not take Taliban or Al Qaeda prisoners of war. If you capture these people alive it is an embarrassment to the US. Since ignoring them on a battle field is also unfeasible, the message from Obama can only mean one thing: shoot the fuckers instead of capturing them.

The solution
Put all captured prisoners from Gitmo back where we found them in Afghanistan and then deal with them without detainment (see above).

“Deemed innocent”?!? By who? Is there some secret information that Europeans possess about the factual innocence of Guantanamo detainees?

Zombie, I suspect that is the caveat that will allow the EUs to sound oh so concerned but will allow them to weasel out of actually taking any.

As a European and a Portuguese, I can tell that we are in serious troubles. And we don’t have guns to defend ourselves.
And the worst thing is to know that Europe will not be going to sink alone. You guys are coming with us. You can thank Obama for that.

The only good thing in this is the fact that Islamics in general and Jihadis in particular are not very good with space science. So, in 7 millions years (more or less), the Sun will destroy the Earth and Islam.

For me, I thanks the Sun for that. It will do what our politicians are afraid to do and don’t let our military do to.

By the way, if America do not sink with Europe, anyone got an extra Green Card? I could use one….
