I don't do it with classical. Still do it with electric, though. Thing is, to get smooth pick action, it just makes it much easier to maintain the 'sweet spot' on the pick if I stabilize with the pinky/ring combo.

A veritable "who's who" of Obama staffers, surrogates and affiliates were among those served with subpoenas. Put simply, within one week of President Barack Obama's administration taking office, it is already under significant legal scrutiny that will -- at a minimum -- take precious time away from dealing with the country's monumental economic and foreign policy challenges.

I took guitar lessons back in the early '60's. My parents thought that it might help me, a nerdy kid, advance socially.
I once took my guitar to class, and one of the "cool" girls grabbed it and wouldn't give it back. She couldn't play for shit, and then untuned it before she finally gave it back to me. What a bitch.

Most beer makes me sick, in the literal sense of the word, which is one more reason I don't drink anything with alcohol in it. That said, I early on learned that not only did Budweiser do the same thing to me that beer in general did, it tasted absolutely horrible.

re: #25 NYCHardhat
Bottomless pit of shit, filth and garbage. I am ashamed that BHO is our POTUS.
The Impeachment trial of Rod Blagojevich begins tomorrow. He won't be present, nor will his attorney. Blago will be embarking on a national public relations gambit which may include some interesting implications about the current President. "Good Morning America", "The View", and "Larry King Live" are scheduled national level outlets for the arguments Blago brought to those of us in Illinois on Friday through a lengthy interview on a popular Chicago talk-radio show and a subsequent press conference on the Chicago ABC-TV network affiliate.
Blago argued, correctly, that he will be impeached through a process which denies him his Constitutional right to offer witnesses in his own defense. One such witness he referred to repeatedly in that context (and almost certainly will on Monday) is Rahm Emanuel, who has stated publicly that nothing inappropriate took place in the contacts he (as BHO's Chief of Staff) had with Blogojevich regarding the appointment of a Senator to fill the Messiah's Senate seat. No quid-pro-quo discussion took place. This he said in the face of Blogo's tape recorded rage at the rejection of such a deal by BHO's "people".
Within hours after Blago took his case to the public in Chicago, Edward Genson his high-powered defense lawyer in the Federal corruption case resigned. John Kass, a Chicago Tribune columnist, assessed that event as follows:
"...demands about Emanuel forced Genson to fire himself from the case. Emanuel had been the U.S. representative of the 5th Congressional District. The previous congressman was Blagojevich. The district is dominated by western suburban towns with long mob histories. It is politically dominated by Genson's good friend and Balgojevich's former shadow governor, state Sen. James DeLeo. Surely, President Obama would not appreciate his chief of staff publicly reminding America about those earthy political allies."
Call me paranoid, if you will, but consider the following:
U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald's reputation for ferreting out corruption in Illinois government caused widespread speculation that BHO, if elected, would reassign him to prevent further activity of that sort.
Fitzgerald arrested Blago on the grounds of conspiracy to sell BHO's Senate seat before the more serious crime of actually selling that seat for personal gain was been committed.
Blago hired the best criminal attorney in Illinois, probably one of the best in the country insofar as success at trial is concerned.
Blago's public statements directed light on the activities - past and present - of Emmanuel and, by association, of BHO himself.
His attorney hits the road.
I ask you, who's calling the shots here and why? Tune in Monday to the above listed broadcasts which you usually ignore for the next installment in what may be a very interesting story.

Ale is very like wine - in that every make of ale tastes different. some have chocolatey tastes, others are fruity, others more earthy... there's a huge variety of them.
next time you're in england - go to a real ale festival.
probably have them in America too.

I like Sake also, I used to think it tasted like battery acid, but now Ive acquired a taste for it.
I really never acquired any sort of taste for alcohol. Since my profession was in law enforcement (CSI, Stone Age era) , and I never knew exactly when I was going to get a call in the wee small hours, I early on figured that doing anything with any testable level of alcohol in my bloodstream was bad joss. As a result, on Friday night, when the gang went out for a few cold ones, I was always the designated driver. Being the guy with the biggest car (a '70 Torino GT Brougham) helped, too.
/On the plus side, I got to drink Coke all night, for free, at every bar and tavern we went to.

I would argue with that to the extent that it is worth remembering that the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, the Iwo Jima statue and any number of other noble works have been paid for with public money--and that sculptors of stature used to design our coinage as little as 50 or 60 years ago.
The problem is that the sort of work which now gets the notice of "public arts commissions"--and hence, public money--is terrible. And our current coinage is a sad joke, below the artistic level of amusement-park tokens.
"public art" is also part of the Gramscian Marxist strategy of undermining Western Civilisation.
there's a LOT on it if you google around...
its quite deliberate. instead of works of art to inspire, you get works of art to repulse..

He concluded that they were significantly tougher than those of the average... leopard.

I would argue back that such artists weren't given grants because they couldn't sell their work elsewhere, they were paid because their services were valuable to society. Paying a sculptor because your city wants a war memorial is different from paying someone to produce work just 'cause they're an artist.
I have a grudge against the NEA, though, based on a terrifyingly bad, vaguely racist art-class substitute teacher from my youth who had one of their grants, so my opinion may not be worth much...

Here in Central Oh, our own commuter's nightmare, the I-70/I-71 interchange in Columbus, OH is going to be "improved' as part of The One's infrastructure program. I personally have stopped trying to count up the number of times I've nearly been punted across several lanes by a merging semi coming down the grade off '70 West to '71 North; the present setup keeps northbound traffic in the lane nearest to the merging lane with concrete barriers. They're taking three years to redo the whole mess.
Of course, Columbus mayor Michael Coleman is already angling to siphon money off the project to pay for his toy train light rail streetcar system through Downtown. While telling everyone it will be the "core" of an intercity system linking Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. (He is not an engineer, doesn't understand the difference, and apparently no one on his staff has the cojones' to explain it to him.)

The growing, and mysterious, irrelevance of al-Qaeda
Doesn't seem particularly mysterious to me, but whatever.
OSAMA BIN LADEN’S messages from the wilderness get little attention nowadays. Al-Qaeda has been unable to land a blow on Western soil since the 2005 London bombings. Its leaders lurk in Pakistan’s tribal belt, hiding from regular lethal attacks by America’s unmanned Predator aircraft. Their Pushtun hosts are tiring of their troublesome guests. Perhaps most damaging, former supporters publicly denounce its ideology. The resultant bickering and low morale do not mean that al-Qaeda and its followers cannot still mount spectacular attacks. Western intelligence services are convinced the group tried to blow up several transatlantic airliners in 2006. It can still pose a menace in, say, parts of Asia. But for now, Mr bin Laden has to try to exploit the news, rather than to make it.
So it was with his last philippic, an audio recording issued on January 14th, in which he claimed that his jihad against America since 2001 had been responsible for bringing about the superpower’s economic collapse. His followers would “continue jihad for another seven years, seven more after that, and even seven more after.” The inauguration of Barack Obama, he said, changes nothing; democracy is a form of “polytheism”. The new president is “like one who swallows a double-edged sword” and will be hurt however he moves. If he withdraws from his predecessor’s wars, Mr Obama suffers military defeat; if he continues, he deepens the economic crisis.
Above all, Mr bin Laden sought to exploit Muslim outrage over Israel’s war in Gaza. Forget about street protests, diplomatic mediation or treacherous Arab leaders, said Mr bin Laden; the only way to defeat Israel was through jihad. Jonathan Evans, the head of MI5, Britain’s domestic intelligence service, is among those who worry that the war in Gaza will have radicalised more Muslims.
Yet Palestine is a problem as well as an opportunity for al-Qaeda. It wants to be linked with the cause that is dearest to Muslims’ hearts, but it has little to offer. Others have fought harder against Israel, chiefly Hamas, the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hizbullah, the Shia militia in Lebanon. But jihadists of al-Qaeda’s sort regard the Muslim Brotherhood as, at best, deviant. By taking part in elections they place man’s law above God’s. And they see Shias as apostates.
Al-Qaeda’s failure to fight for Palestine comes up repeatedly in jihadist internet forums. It also forms part of the latest ideological counter-attack against al-Qaeda by Sayyid Imam al-Sharif, one of its founders in 1998 and a leading jihadist ideologue under the pen-name “Dr Fadl”. He has since fallen out with its leaders, particularly Ayman al-Zawahiri, who succeeded him as head of Egypt’s Islamic Jihad group. Al-Qaeda, he now says, “did not offer Palestine anything except words”.
Dr Fadl was arrested in Yemen in 2001 and extradited to Egypt. His first assault on al-Qaeda for its profligate killing of Muslims, at the end of 2007, prompted Mr Zawahiri to write a rebuttal of nearly 200 pages. The rejoinder to that, issued in November, was serialised in an Egyptian newspaper. His latest critique ranges from personal attacks on Mr Zawahiri to accusations that al-Qaeda has distorted Islamic law on jihad and inflicted a series of disasters on Muslims.
Dr Fadl accuses Mr Zawahiri of being an agent of the Sudanese intelligence services who agreed to carry out ten attacks in Egypt in the 1990s in exchange for $100,000. He denounces him as a liar and a coward who incites others to die in jihad while not taking part in the fighting. Egyptian prisons and graveyards were filled with jihadists, but Mr Zawahiri fled abroad, he says. ...

The next step in human evolution is ........Obama.
With his call for change, Barack Obama made evolutionary transformation the centerpiece of his campaign. He was all of two years old when Martin Luther King proclaimed his dream to the world. Less than half a lifetime later, Obama had realized this dream - as if to furnish proof of the penetrating power of cultural evolution. He owes his victory in large part to a collective spirit extending throughout the world. His victory also signals a breakthrough for the most basic biological principle of cooperation - a giant step for mankind from "I" to "we." His winning phrase was not I can, but we can.

...What's happening now is not pacifism but passivism-a terrible inertia filled with feel-good platitudes that absolve us from action, or even feeling. It was thus inevitable that an all-network, all-star telethon should have featured John Lennon's anthem for fluffy nihilists:Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today . . .You may say he's a dreamer, but he's not. A couple of years ago, it emerged that Lennon was a very generous contributor not just to organizations that support and fund the IRA, but to the IRA itself. He could "imagine there's no countries" and "nothing to kill or die for," but until that blessed day he was quite happy to support an organization that blows up people in shopping centers and railway stations. It's heartening to know that, though he grew rich peddling illusory pap to the masses, he didn't fall for it himself. ...

Have they ever gotten more than 4 lanes one way thru Columbus? I remember it was a bite to get thru there midday
Nope. This plan is supposed to make it six lanes each way. The trouble is, to do that, they'll have to tear out three bridges and a railway line to make room for it. Not to mention take half of University Hospital's parking area. Or else, chop out a chunk of the area around the Levecque Tower. The reason that I-70/71 is a cluster-f**k to begin with is that the original ACE proposal of 1956 was ignored so they could sell more real-estate in the Downtown area. And now, the bill is coming due.
/It's going to be interesting to watch- from the 270 outerbelt, which is how anyone south of Columbus will have to get north of Broad Street while it's going on.

re: #424 songbird
So he's one of the Indigo Children?
This may seem funny, but my husband's ex really believed this stuff and it screwed up his daughters.
I've often wondered how many moonbats know that most of their dogmas, from New Age stuff to Gaia worship, originated in the UFO contactee cults of the post-WW II/early Cold War period.
The reason those cults sprang up so rapidly is easy enough to see now. The atomic bomb had abruptly changed the paradigm of war. Instead of war being fought on a battlefield thousands of miles away on another continent, the A-bomb plus first long-range bombers and then ICBMs meant that the next war would very likely be fought on everybody's home soil. Which meant that anybody could be a casualty. Race, religion, social status, or "who you knew" would make no difference. And to put it bluntly, a lot of people just couldn't cope with the knowledge.
Vannevar Bush's book Modern Arms and Free Men (1949) made the prediction that the next war would be a total war (defined as destruction of the homelands of the participants). It is noteworthy that the first contactee cults sprang up within a year after its wide dissemination to U.s libraries in 1950-51 courtesy of the U.S. government. The first wave of popular books on "Flying Saucers" hit the news-stands about the same time, mostly in paperbacks. The first wave of contactee books came out about eighteen months later, and the movement was in full cry by the Korean ceasefire in 1953.
Their message was one we all know today; unilateral disarmament, a one-world government, and a "return to nature" under the "benevolent" rule of an "enlightened elite". The same message we heard from the "anti-war" activists in the Sixties, the "anti-nuclear" activists in the Seventies, the "anti-imperialism" activists in the Eighties, and the whole moonbat crowd today.
The assassinations of the Kennedy brothers were what really sent the madness mainstream. Because they were murdered by a disaffected Communist (Oswald) and an Islamist radical (Sirhan)- who were exactly the kind of people that the "contactee" types, and the leftist intellectuals who adopted their dogmas, sympathized with. The reason the left has blamed the U.S. government and other conspiracies for both for the last forty-plus years is that the alternative is to admit that it was their own "movement" that resulted in their idols' murders. And that just isn't going to happen, ever.
The combination of the contactees' fear of our technological culture, and the "progressives" desire for power, sent American liberalism up an intellectual cul-de-sac in the 1960s, that it has yet to emerge from, and in fact may never find its way out of.
And it all began with a few groups of traumatized fringe cultists who could not accept the possibility that nuclear weapons might in fact be the one thing that could prevent a final, catastrophic war- by making it abundantly clear to the leaders on both sides that they, personally, would not survive it.
So I'm not surprised when moonbats behave in entirely irrational ways today. What would surprise me is if they actually began to make sense.
cheers
eon

Kids With Nazi Names Taken From Home
HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Jan. 14) - Three New Jersey siblings whose names have Nazi connotations have been placed in the custody of the state, police said. The children, ranging in age from 3 to under 1, were removed from their home Friday. They drew attention last month when a supermarket bakery refused to put the name of the oldest — Adolf Hitler Campbell — on a birthday cake.

The internment of the Japanese would only be a legitimate argument had the pilots who attacked Pearl Harbor been native to America. They weren't so that is a straw man. That is to say, I agree that this episode was wrong.
But, how in the world do you get to the position, from there, that these creatures who have very carefully been kept outside of our domestic borders, and who are totally illegitimate combatants taken into custody abroad, are somehow deserving of this precious constitutional compact?

The Patriot act was great for foriegn nationals doing "business" in our country, but they expanded it to cover US citizens while at the same time only giving us lip service to securing our borders. They also gave us the abortion known as TSA which only gave a new layer of buracracyto deal with and to steal our nail clippers...I really don't think it helped much for the most part, although certain aspects of it did. However I don't want my government eliminating my 4th ammendment rights on search and seizure to be "abridged" in order to make me "safer"

The Supreme court ruled otherwise for combatants in US custody. We are arguing in vain unless the constitution is amended or congress votes to suspends Habeas Corpus. You are correct when it comes to the WW II war crimes though.

I doubt seriously if those required to confront the enemy first-hand will resort to the courts. Take no prisoners would seem a more effective and efficient course of action. When they had a reasonable alternative they took it. At this point why should they?
