Google (Briefly) Labels Every Site on the Web As ‘Dangerous’

Science • Views: 5,212

Early this morning, for about a half hour, Google’s search engine was issuing the warning, “This Site May Harm Your Computer”—for every site on the web.

It’s fixed now, and here’s the explanation from the official Google blog: ‘This site may harm your computer’ on every search result?!?!

What happened? Very simply, human error. Google flags search results with the message “This site may harm your computer” if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. We do this to protect our users against visiting sites that could harm their computers. We work with a non-profit called StopBadware.org to get our list of URLs. StopBadware carefully researches each consumer complaint to decide fairly whether that URL belongs on the list. Since each case needs to be individually researched, this list is maintained by humans, not algorithms.

We periodically receive updates to that list and received one such update to release on the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here’s the human error), the URL of ‘/’ was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and ‘/’ expands to all URLs. Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file. Since we push these updates in a staggered and rolling fashion, the errors began appearing between 6:27 a.m. and 6:40 a.m. and began disappearing between 7:10 and 7:25 a.m., so the duration of the problem for any particular user was approximately 40 minutes.

Well... I wouldn't panic just yet. Their power doesn't extend past their own site. They didn't actually 'deem' anything, except within their own search results.

Point taken, though -- the current economic collapse illustrates that the more plugged in we become, the more interdependent and wired, the more vulnerable we become to one well-placed stab of an electronic stiletto.

Thanks. I'm re-posting it here, since the last thread is winding down.

Everybody, check out what poster "Petra" has to say on yesterday's "Holocaust-Denying Priest" thread:

re: #404 Petra

I recommend that people read the interview with Fr. Floriano Abrahamowicz and decide for themselves if his comments have been fairly represented. It is available here: [Link: ncronline3.org...]

This priest said “No, I don’t cast doubt on the numbers. There could have been more than six million victims.” How does this seem to cast doubt on the numbers?

Read the rest of the priest's answer, and the rest of the interview, to see how Petra lies.

Rights activist apologises for anti-Semitic comments

THE convener of a conference on justice for Palestine, to be held at State Parliament tomorrow, has apologised for making anti-Jewish comments despite having earlier defended them as "private conversation".

Maqsood Alshams, who formed a lobby group called the Asia Pacific Human Rights Institute, organised the conference with three universities to discuss the possibility of Israel being prosecuted by the International Court of Justice.
...
"The simple answer is that you the Jews are real motherf----- bastards," he wrote in an email to Richard Benkin, a human rights activist based in Chicago.

So, that's what it was.

Was looking for obits, and every funeral home linked from Google had that message.

I wonder when they're going to start flagging the bogus scam sites that tell you how to "Earn Big Money With Google"...

[WARNING: Link goes to EXTREMELY OBNOXIOUS site with bogus claims and a stupid voice-over. Don't say I didn't warn you. (But it is funny.)]

I don't like children and even I found it fascinating.

Just for you -- The 17 Year Bunghole Theory On Raising Children:

At some point in its life, a child will cease being warm and soft and cuddly.
When that happens, put it into a large wine cask in the back yard.
Feed it through the bunghole.
On its seventeenth birthday, drive in the bung.

Saw it all earlier. They labeled the site I work at as "no good"

I did the appropriate thing and contacted the guys I work for...then I noticed these entries....and that suggested there was a not so personal issue

And this

Not a very devout Muslim. Hamas would have him killed for drinking no matter how much he hates the Jews.

They do have their standards, Killgore.

re: #108 ploome hineni

you asked Huar

Hhar, have you ever read Franz Rosenzweig's "Star of Redemption"? Just curious. He has an interesting take on the relationship between synagogue and church, one which might surprise you. And he is considered to be one of the leading lights of 20th-century Jewish philosophy, along with the great Martin Buber.

What is his interesting take?
One of my best friends has been active in Christian Jewish Dialog for more than 30 years, she is actually on a 'national council' , and nothing much seems to really change

It was Jules Isaac

and his personal relationship with the Pope who, in the aftermath of the Holocaust was the impetus for Vatican ll..

Rosenzweig came close to converting to Christianity when he was a philosophy student. But before he did, he attended celebrations of the High Holy Days at a traditional synagogue, and that convinced him that there was no need for Jews to convert.

He remained close with Christians, converts and fellow Jews, however, and in his "Stern der Erlösung" (Star of Redemption) he says that BOTH Christianity and Judaism are true religions, the one for the Jews, the other for everybody else.

He also has an extremely interesting take on Islam and Mohammed (whom he calls "master of the great plagiarism"!), saying that Islam adopted the outward form of monotheism (revelation) without understanding the implications of either creation or redemption. He calls Allah "the creator who might as well not have bothered to create". (The book was written during and right after World War One, so the modern jihad had not started yet, and one can't accuse him of bias.)

The book is heavy going at times, and the translation I have (by William Hallo) is very unsatisfactory, but there seems to be a brand-new translation by Barbara Galli for which I can't vouch but which can only be an improvement, I would hope.

Ploome, scratch what I said about the Galli translation. I just found a review by someone who knows German and has read both her and Hallo's rendering, and he says the latter is still the best available:

Hallo's edition, despite its turgid prose, is somewhat more reliable, and contains the exhaustive footnotes of the standard German editions.

Perhaps I should look into doing my own version. I need a big project like that to keep me busy. I'll be buying the German original online today!

Funny Google fixed this problem in a few hours, they fixed an Obamablast attack in four days but in four years or so they couldn't fix a googleattack on Pres Bush linking his name with 'miserable failure', why could that possibly be?

Amazing, figuring the times stated were EST, this happened while I was walking the dog, came back, and caught some more shuteye. Glad I missed it.
Usually get the message, when I get it, clicking on Lucianne.com when one of her advertisers does something "frisky." Learned to click through that and run anti-spyware afterwards - no problem, just an annoyance.

I ran a virus scan for this?

123 Gmac  Sat, Jan 31, 2009 6:21:25pm

I saw that this morning after my mother called me about it. I popped open Google and did a search and every link it found was tagged with the dreaded "This Site May Harm Your Computer”. Quick fix was to have her reset the home page search engine to Ask.com , no issues there, problem solved.

BTW, I haven't used Google for over 6 years now. Their rabid anti-Americanism disgusted me a long time ago and I haven't looked back. They aren't the only search engine out there and they are driving more people away all the time as evidenced by them loosing ad revenue.

Google could cease to exist and I wouldn't care, it would probably make my day even.
