Iraqi Election Day

Middle East • Views: 5,326

Iraq has truly come a long way from its nightmarish days of dictatorship: Iraq wraps up election with no major violence.

BAGHDAD – Iraqis passed through security checkpoints and razor-wire cordons to vote Saturday in provincial elections that are considered a crucial test of the nation’s stability as U.S. officials consider the pace of troop withdrawals.

Polls opened shortly after dawn after a step-by-step security clampdown across the country, including traffic bans in central Baghdad and other major cities and closure of border crossings and airports. Voting ended 11 hours later with no reports of major violence, though voters at some polling stations complained that their names did not appear on lists. Balloting was extended for one hour to accommodate voters.

Officials said counting would begin Sunday with preliminary results are not expected before Tuesday.

UPDATE at 1/31/09 9:48:12 am:

There isn’t a single word about these historic elections on the White House website.

Google was under criticismA Google bomb is an attempt of artificially raising the importance of a Web page in the Google search results with a specific keyword. Google-bombing was in the news a few years back when the the search term ' miserable failure' indexed President Bush's homepage at the top of the results.

Google was under criticism earlier as it took four years to fix the Bush Google bomb, But this time it acted fast enough to diffuse the new bomb that targeted Obama.

Saturday is a slow news day and it is a major story, so the MSM will cover in a decent manner. On Monday, they'll give Obama all the credit for the smoothness of the vote. They will say that the Iraqi public was calmed by the soothing words of The One.

Bush will be recognized when the current partisan dust settles for the long term strategic value a transformation of Iraq will be.

I have to remind my liberal friends just how bad the middle east was for us at the beginning of the Bush administration. Certainly Iran's nuclear program was not as advanced--only worse, it was advancing undiscovered.

Iraq can still go wrong, but Bush did a lot to make a better middle east at least possible.

Hamas cited as an example of democracy being necessary, but not sufficient, falls into the trap of the left's arguments that assumes the result of Hamas in Gaza was an aspect of "democracy". Democracy is more than just a vote for who represents you. A liberal democracy includes civil rights, accountability and transparency of government, oversight, limits on the power of government, and civil rights such as freedom of speech and property rights. Hamas engendered nothing that democracy represents.

It's an interesting experiment. A Fab Lab is essentially a small-scale workshop and rapid prototyping facility where local participants can learn new technology skills that can be applied to small business. Much of the work of the Jalalabad Fab Lab has thus far involved basic projects: printed t-shirts, small art projects, wireless antennas. Over time, lab participants are supposed to build tools to tackle more complex problems.

Equipment and start-up costs equipment were provided in part by an National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. Volunteers took unpaid leave to travel to Afghanistan. Total cost? Around $40,000 (not including donated time and security work)

This is from yesterday's press briefing [added emphasis is mine]:

Q What's the President's expectations for this weekend's elections in Iraq? And how much will they be a litmus test, in terms of security, as he makes his decisions on the draw-down of troops?

MR. GIBBS: Well, obviously the President will watch the results, and believes that the provincial elections this weekend mark another significant milestone in Iraq's democratic development. There are a series of elections that will happen throughout the country throughout the rest of the year -- an important year, again, for that democratic development to continue.

Separately, the President has met with military advisors, the Joint Chiefs, the Secretary, commanders on the ground in the region over the past almost two weeks, to hear from them and quite honestly, for them to hear from him about a way forward in Iraq, Afghanistan. And also, I think as I mentioned yesterday, a fairly lengthy and engaged discussion at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs this week on the health of the military force that we have right now. I think the Pentagon said this, and it's true that we expect that we'll have recommendations and decisions on moving forward on Iraq quite soon.

And later:

Q Robert, with the Iraqi elections coming up this weekend, how concerned are you that external forces, neighbors of Iraq, specifically Iran and Syria, might play a role that is not in the best interest of the democracy --

MR. GIBBS: Well, let me not -- I don't want to go into hypotheticals about what may or may not happen other than to say that, you know, we're going to obviously watch these elections, watch their outcome, and believe that Saturday marks just another -- that Saturday marks a very important continued milestone for democratic development in Iraq, and that as the President laid out, that one of the -- one of the goals of his review process as it relates to our forces in Iraq is to give more responsibility for security and governing to the Iraqi government. And I think these elections, again, mark an important milestone towards achieving that and, we hope very soon, to giving them more of that opportunity and more of that responsibility.

Q Thank you, Robert.

The "just another" phrase was an interesting slip.

NEW YORK — Renee Zellweger has a new man in her life, but he doesn't know it.

No leftist trap here. Merely having an election is not sufficient, and your entire post proves my point. Thank you.

Folks in the ME don't count as far as libs are concerned unless they are trying to blow up or hack innocent civilians to death. Then people like Jimmy Carter jump in to defend said 'sploders and hackers. Otherwise, libs could care less about anyone living in freedom and peace, let alone celebrate a new Democracy. Obama is no exception to typical lib mentality.

'Now I believe, myself, that the secretary of state, the secretary of defense and you have to make your own decision as to what the president knows: that this war is lost, that the surge is not accomplishing anything,' Reid, D-Nev., told reporters.

I just thought someone should tell you that the Iraqi's have just successfully completed their second time in electing leaders to their "congress" and there was no violence.

No, it hasn't - it's still an Islamic country. But this is a good START - having a true democracy in the M.E. besides Israel - and especially one with the geographical position of Iraq is indeed a good start.

re: #5 screaming_eagle

Iraqi Elections. Yet again. I need to find a liberal to tell me why this is bad. I forgot already.

Liberals think that a free Iraq is a wonderful thing. Liberals will gladly shed blood, sweat and tears to bring freedom to others. The United States was founded by Liberals and its greatest leaders have all been Liberals.

Leftists on the other hand think that democracy is a bad thing because it forever ensures that the "right people" aren't in power. When people are left to their own devices and invested with personal, political, and economic power, the result is a society where the peons get to do what they want instead of doing what their betters tell them to.

From a leftist point of view, Iraq was primed for communist revolution. By removing its murderous dictator, and replacing tyranny with democracy, the US has set the left's hopes of communist revolution in Iraq back 50 years or more.

There isn’t a single word about these historic elections on the White House website.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't even Bill Clinton have given some sort of congratulatory statement? The US spent the better part of a $1T for this (in part); some sort of recognition is in order. There's something truly evil about our new POTUS - and I'm sure that surprises nobody here.

And Reid? Or Pelosi? These people have a lot of nerve to talk about "post-partisanship".

148 William  Sat, Jan 31, 2009 2:47:43pm

The Associated Press works tirelessly to remind readers of every conceivable issue and flaw, which I've highlighted in bold below, in these historic Iraqi elections:

Associated Press
January 31, 2009

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama congratulated Iraqis on Saturday's provincial elections and urged the winners to work for their people.

Obama said the elections for the provincial council seats were significant, peaceful and important steps toward Iraqis taking responsibility for their future. His statement did not address complaints from local officials that the Shiite-led government attempted to keep the minority Sunnis from full participation.

"Millions of Iraqi citizens from every ethnic and religious group went peacefully to the polls across the country to choose new provincial councils," Obama said in a statement released by the White House. "It is important that the councils get seated, select new governors and begin work on behalf of the Iraqi people who elected them."

Obama also noted that the U.S. provided technical assistance to the Iraqi electoral commission, as did the U.N. and other international groups. He didn't, however, mention the U.S. troops that patrolled the country — away from voting booths — while the new Obama administration in Washington considers a new strategy for the unpopular war in Iraq.

It will be days before initial results are released, but officials in Iraq claimed success. Election observers and others were examining a growing list of complaints, including claims that hundreds of people — perhaps more — were wrongly omitted from voting lists in areas across Iraq.

Voters in all but four northern areas cast ballots and dipped their fingers in purple ink, the new symbol of democracy in a country once ruled by Saddam Hussein.

The elections were conducted without major violence, but there were claims of flaws and threats of challenges.

Those grievances could complicate politicians' efforts to force coalitions among the 14,000 candidates for the influential regional posts some six years after the U.S.-led invasion.
