Well-written and brilliantly insightful.

And as a side note, I make a hell of a lot of money, by comparison to what the average inhabitant of the world makes, and I do not believe that I could adequately support eight children. I would stop before I got to eight. And if I didn't stop, I would not demand that people in other countries be forced to pay for them.

Excellent article. Thanks, Chalres.

chop...

In Gaza, however, there has been no demographic disarmament. The average woman still bears six babies. For every 1,000 men aged 40-44, there are 4,300 boys aged 0-4 years. In the U.S. the latter figure is 1,000, and in the U.K. it's only 670.

...

The reason for Gaza's endless youth bulge is that a large majority of its population does not have to provide for its offspring. Most babies are fed, clothed, vaccinated and educated by UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. Unlike the U.N. High Commission for Refugees, which deals with the rest of the world's refugees and aims to settle them in their respective host countries, UNRWA perpetuates the Palestinian problem by classifying as refugees not only those who originally fled their homes, but all of their descendents as well.

UNRWA is benevolently funded by the U.S. (31%) and the European Union (nearly 50%) -- only 7% of the funds come from Muslim sources. Thanks to the West's largesse, nearly the entire population of Gaza lives in a kind of lowly but regularly paid dependence. One result of this unlimited welfare is an endless population boom. Between 1950 and 2008, Gaza's population has grown from 240,000 to 1.5 million. The West basically created a new Near Eastern people in Gaza that at current trends will reach three million in 2040. Within that period, Gazans may alter the justifications and directions of their aggression but are unlikely to stop the aggression itself.

WE help the death cult create more human eternal victim hate machines.

41 lawhawk  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 10:00:56am

It absolutely is subsidizing the Gaza/West Bank mess because UNRWA has absolutely no incentive to stop providing its services. It's a growth industry (despite the shrill hysterics claiming Israel engages in genocide); the UNRWA definition of refugee is so expansive as to be worthless - anyone who is a descendant of the original refugees is treated as a refugee.

No other refugee class in the world gets that treatment. The UNHCR deals with refugee crises the world over at a fraction of the cost of UNRWA and resettles millions without endless war and violence among the participants. UNRWA relies on local Gazans and West Bank Arabs and who are often terrorists themselves (no way to do background checks to see whether they're Hamas or Fatah terror thugs).

So, it is as a result of the Western idea of humanitarian aid that we're exacerbating the crisis because the Palestinians do not take responsibility for their own well being and instead find reason to blame everyone else - Israel the most common, but the US, West, fellow Arabs, etc. for the plight. They ignore that Hamas is at war with Israel and started the most recent conflict because it cannot help itself from firing thousands of kassams at Israel. Did they not expect Israel to one day decide enough was enough and strike back?

Ideally, we would cut all aid until the Paliterrorists threw out Hamas and Fatah, and accepted Israel's right to exist.
But given that isn't likely, I suggested that all aid to the Paliterrorists be subject to transfer to Israel for every attack on Israel.
That is, the Israelis would get compensation FROM THE AID TO GAZA AND THE WEST BANK for every attack.
I doubt this will happen either.

re: #58 buzzsawmonkey

It's not too late.

Seriously, the best possible plan I can come up with at this point is that Egypt takes Gaza back, in exchange for continuing to be on Uncle Sam's foreign aid 'nice' list, and Jordan and Israel divide up the West Bank between them, fair's fair, no whining, and everyone's folks on the wrong side of the line have to move or deal with their new citizenship.

But I do not see it happening, in part because I do not see the will from the international community, or the 'Ummah'. Most players in this game want the Palestinians to go on sitting in no man's land, seething.

65 Cato the Elder  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 10:11:05am

That the question even needs asking testifies to the deep ignorance in the West about the "refugee" doctrine. One standard for Palestinians, another for everybody else. Are there any refugees left over from the mass displacements after WWII? I didn't think so.

UNRWA perpetuates a situation that anywhere else in the world would long since have been resolved by assimilation, emigration, naturalization and the like.

It is time to pull the plug on UNRWA.

Frankly, I don't feel all that sorry for a population that is economically poor (due to their own war mongering and total lack of responsibility) and a population where each woman spits out six babies and much of their meager resources goes towards perpetuating violence. How about sending them some condoms? Or perhaps the palestinians should implement laws such as they have in China, allowing only one child per family. Its clearly true, though its nice for people to start actually talking about this.

The Palestinian terrorities, and in particular the no-longer-occupied Gaza exist mostly on foreign handouts, which like most of these programs is gobbled up by corrupt leadership, acting to perpetuate the bad leaders.

One egregious example is the hundreds of millions of dollars salted away in Swiss bank accounts by Yassir Arafat. Most of his power came from this money. The guy died literally one of the world's wealthiest men entirely on the strength of money he embezzled or extracted from his "people".

73 solomonpanting  Mon, Feb 9, 2009 10:21:58am

Despite the media's obsession with the Mideast conflict, it has cost many fewer lives than the youth bulges in West Africa, Lebanon or Algeria. In the six decades since Israel's founding, "only" some 62,000 people (40,000 Arabs, 22,000 Jews) have been killed in all the Israeli-Arab wars and Palestinian terror attacks. During that same time, some 11 million Muslims have been killed in wars and terror attacks -- mostly at the hands of other Muslims.

Daniel Pipes covered that fact a couple of years back.

If only more people were aware of these genuine statistics.

It's not just the international NGO's and 'social workers' who are perpetuating the misery - it's still fundamentally being done by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon with the primary intent of providing a misdirection of focus away from the corruption and inefficiencies in the government of those countries.

This provides the entry point for the islamic fanactics who draw upon this misery by blaming the problems on the lack of faith and belief in Islam. They are told that only by being more faithful to Islam - and willing to participate in jihad and re-establishing the caliphate - can they escape their misery. So, they are taught hate on earth and promised paradise in death...while their leaders reap the wealth gained from the fight...and useful idiots enabling this via a naive attempt to halt the misery. (The leadership in the region doesn't want the misery to end - they have to use and leverage it.)

Foreign aid doesn't work, never has. Historically it has shown to just exacerbate a people's condition by never allowing the situation to develop where people have to take the reigns and start doing for themselves.

Teach to plant, fish, reconstruct, to become self-sufficient. These concepts have all but disappeared it seems. Look at Africa. Perfect example of foreign aid being sent, taken by the government, contributed to the rise of tyrannical dictatorship, decline and eventual dissolution of local production of goods and services.

As a country, the US has got to stop being so "generous". All we're doing is making the situation worse.

i realize that it is not too popular too bring in the Bible amongst civilized folk these days, but one can only understand the situation re Israel in light of it. And it clearly states that there will come a day when 'the nations' will seek to wrest Israel/Jerusalem away from its rightful owners.

And now (and for the last few decades) we are seeing the Plan unful before our very eyes. To paraphrase the sentiments of the Bible:
"Have courage, you men of Israel and you worm, Jacob: For I will fight for My People as in the day that fought for them when I took them out of Egypt with an outstretched arm and a mighty hand in the sight of all the nations. and the nations shall glory in you and you shall never more be ashamed. I the L-rd will hasten it in its time.
