‘Historic’ Stimulus Is Egregious Waste
Economic Recovery: Congress is confident it will send President Obama a stimulus bill to sign by Monday’s holiday. Unless something unforeseen happens, what lawmakers will put on his desk is a $789 billion waste.
The old quip that no one should watch while laws or sausages get made is true — especially with this Congress. America’s legislative body has moved away from creating anything of value and instead habitually turns out things that belong in a landfill.
None have ever been more dump-worthy than the spending bill being sold as economic stimulus.
Harvard economist Robert Barro calls the legislation “probably the worst bill that has been put forward since the 1930s.”
“I mean it’s wasting a tremendous amount of money,” he said in an interview with the Atlantic. “I don’t think it will expand the economy… . I think it’s garbage.”
Rep. Tom Cole, Republican from Oklahoma, was a bit more refined but no less biting in his commentary. Borrowing from Winston Churchill, he wryly observed from the House floor Thursday morning that “Never have so few spent so much so quickly to do so little.”
/and, except for the Three Stooges of the Senate, the Bonkeys totally own this obscene travesty of epic proportions
21 | Ojoe Fri, Feb 13, 2009 12:05:53pm |
Groovy. More layers of government inefficiently doing things that we could do ourselves, with officious oversight. Gee, this will speed things up. Plus, take my money to pay for it, or borrow the bucks so my kids have to pay it back double or triple.
Does not make much sense to me.

It will probably pass in the Senate and this is what we can expect.
Here come exploding welfare rolls
Thomas Lifson
It’s all about incentives, and buried in the stimulus bill is a huge inducement for states to explode the numbers of people receiving welfare. The editors of National Review spotted the fatal provision:
Under the provisions in the stimulus bill, states will once again be paid a bounty for expanding their welfare rolls. As reported by Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation, the federal government will now pay states 80 percent of the cost for each new family they sign up for welfare. That means that states will get $4 for every $1 they spend. This will leave the main welfare program, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), with a funding mechanism similar to the one that supports Medicaid. As Brian Blase argues here, Medicaid’s funding ratio, which gives states $1 to $3 for every dollar they spend, has caused state Medicaid spending to skyrocket. If Medicaid’s dollar-for-dollar model has proved ruinous, Obama’s new $4-to-$1 ratio for welfare will prove, in all likelihood, four times so.
Needless to say, people who receive checks from the government are loyal Democrat voters. Say farewell to the prosperity brought about by welfare reform. The new incentive system favors growth of welfare dependency.

There was a bipartisan rejection of the porkfest in the House even as it passed by Democrats hands.
Seven Democrats voted to oppose the measure along with the entire GOP. Daniel Lipinski, a Democrat from the 3d District of IL voted Present.
The seven: Bright, DeFazio, Griffith, Minnick, Peterson, Schuler, Taylor.
The Democrats showed they will spend the nation into oblivion when given the option even though economists believe that the spending plan will not help in the short or long term.
Of particular note, while the numbers will be thrown around, consider that of the roughly $230 billion in tax related items, $68 billion of that amount is an AMT patch that I had previously noted would be used to get those on the fence to vote for this crap. The actual tax breaks are a pittance of the whole, and most of the government spending is to grow government, not the private sector, which would have to shoulder the burden of repaying this mess for generations to come. The actual tax breaks for individuals will be lost to many as states and localities increase their taxes to cover their own shortfall, meaning that the government gets it going and coming, and taxpayers see no benefit.

Okay, so what? If this is a roll-back of the welfare reform under Clinton (thanks to Newt Gingrich), isn’t it actually an additional expense for the state? Let’s say the total cost of new families added comes to $10 million. If the Feds send $8 million, the state is still spending $2 million more than it would have had they not gone looking for families to sign up.
And states like California are already bankrupt.
Guess I don’t get it.

How is the fact that folks got angry against GOPers for the last two election cycles and allowed the Democrats to control all three branches of government, putting in place the most inept, self-centered, and fiscally irresponsible bunch of politicians in recent history. Yeah, that really worked out great!
The GOP deserved to lose seats because of their own fiscal irresponsibility and criminality and ethics issues, but the Democrats have made all three central to their administration including all the the tax cheats in Congress and cabinet appointees to the ethics woes of folks like Rangel and Murtha.

Speaking as a conservative Republican, I would say that not every Republican vote was partisan, that many of these folks really are fiscally conservative and think this bill is socialist crap.
On the other hand, I’m trying to remember the last time Republicans were in power (excluding the President of course). This bunch of Senators and Reps are some of the lamest, wimpiest, weakest GOPers to ever come down the pike. They were never in power, even when they had the majority of votes.

re: #88 eschew_obfuscation
If a state spends $1 and gets $4, it has gained $3 in total.
Sure, but to get the $3 (all of which goes to cover the cost of this specific program) they still have to spend the other $1 on the same program. So it’s not like that dollar can go to repairing roads, bridges, or other real responsibilities. It goes to either the deadbeats on welfare, or the deadbeats in the welfare office.
And that $1 has to come from somewhere - like the taxpayers in that state.

Yep. And much of the health care stuff in this bill comes from Tom Daschle’s proposals. I sure won’t link to Huffington Post, but will offer this from an article Daschle published. The only word to describe this is: IRONY.
The time is now for us to take this challenge head-on. What we need is a change in approach. In my book, Critical: What We Can Do About the American Health-Care Crisis, I have proposed a Federal Health Board that would be a foundation from which we could address all three problems. In many ways, the Federal Health Board would resemble our current Federal Reserve Board for the banking industry. Just as the Federal Reserve ensures certain standards, transparency and performance for our banking industry, the Fed Health would ensure harmonization across public programs of health-care protocols, benefits, and transparency. Ultimately, the Fed Health would offer a public framework within which a private health-care system could operate more effectively and efficiently.
In other news, Daschle has proposed to restructure the Department of Defense to make it operate more like the Post Office.

No need. Rest assured it has been thoroughly fine-tooth combed. Page by page. Line by line.
From Time Magazine Nov 25
As Obama’s fledgling economic team bolts together a stimulus package that could cost the nation’s taxpayers upwards of half a trillion dollars, the President-elect said the old ways of building a federal budget — often piling additional billions onto hidebound programs of dubious value — are over. He pledged that his Administration would go through the federal budget “page by page, line by line, eliminating those programs we don’t need and insisting that those that we do need operate in a sensible, cost-effective way.” He referred to the “hard-pressed middle class” and declared that “their government is on their side” — a jibe at the Bush Administration’s preoccupation with restoring the fortunes of Wall Street.

The bill is basically a bunch of transfer payments. Giving more cash and benefits to unemployed.
This may be a good idea (I don’t think so, but we can disagree), but it certainly will not stimulate the economy. In economic terms, it will discourage these people from finding other jobs, which will be the opposite of a stimulous.
The good news/bad news is that the economy may recover anyway.

I used to work in the state legislature for a member and that’s my take as well. Members simply don’t read what’s in the legislation and staffers are usually tasked with figuring out various things, whether it’s assuring that member items are in or to get key points.
Staffers keep DC operating, and they’re the ones who are tasked with putting together these bills. Members of Congress don’t know or have the time to do so (or so they say). What’s more important - opening debate and giving members time to figure out what’s going on, or jetting off to Rome?

I picked this up from the spinoffs early this morning. Apologies that I don’t recall who to give the hat tip to.
Arlen Specter losing support of Republican peers
With the $789 billion economic stimulus package he helped broker set for a vote in the U.S. House and Senate, Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., phoned home Thursday to unhappy members of the Pennsylvania State Republican Committee.
The conference call was initiated by Specter, his office said. It was a “conversation” to explain his thinking for backing the spending plan that Democrats hope will deliver jobs for the tanking U.S. economy.
But a growing chorus of Pennsylvania state Republican officials say their faith in Specter is irretrievably broken. And some are vowing to defeat Specter in the Republican primary in 2010.
“It’s clear we need a conservative senator who can do the right thing for America,” said Glen Meakem, a conservative talk show host in Pennsylvania.
“It’s over for Arlen. He would do best to retire gracefully,” he said, adding that party leaders across the state have intensified talks about a primary challenge against Specter.
The old GOP adage that it is better to have Specter in the Senate than a Democrat apparently no longer holds true.
Some Pennsylvania Republican officials are so eager to drum up a legitimate opponent to run against Specter, they’ve started a wish list that includes two prominent Republicans who’ve said they’re exploring a run — for governor.
Jim Roddy, chairman of the Allegheny County Republican Committee, suggested two names: Pat Toomey and U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-Chester Springs.
Toomey, a conservative former Congressman from the Lehigh Valley, narrowly lost to Specter in the 2004 primary. But Toomey has said he is not running for the Senate.
Representatives for Gerlach said they have no indication that he is considering anything other than a potential run for governor.
After heavy losses on Election Day, the backlash against Specter demonstrates that the GOP is banking on a comeback by re-asserting its low tax/small government roots. And Republicans seem willing to consider sacrificing a powerful and senior senator in Specter.

If the economy does not recover, we will get to have an even bigger stimulous package this fall.
No so. Most of the spending and “stimuli” in THIS package doesn’t even kick in till next year and the year after. (IIRC,, only about 3% of the total bill is earmarked for this year)
I guess I’m hearing different statistics because no one knows what’s really there. The transfer payments for extension of unemployment benefits and the new unemployment ‘free-healthcare’ benefit starts immediately….at least that’s my understanding.
If when those extended benefits expire and we are still sputtering economically, they will be extended again - with great fanfare.

Obama said this during the campaign:
[W]hat I’ve proposed, you’ll hear Sen. McCain say, well, he’s proposing a whole bunch of new spending, but actually I’m cutting more than I’m spending so that it will be a net spending cut.
LOL. OK. Sure.
3rd Debate
OBAMA: Absolutely. So let me get to that. What I want to emphasize, though, is that I have been a strong proponent of pay-as- you-go. Every dollar that I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut so that it matches.

re: #69 lawhawk
How is the fact that folks got angry against GOPers for the last two election cycles and allowed the Democrats to control all three branches of government, putting in place the most inept, self-centered, and fiscally irresponsible bunch of politicians in recent history. Yeah, that really worked out great!
The GOP deserved to lose seats because of their own fiscal irresponsibility and criminality and ethics issues, but the Democrats have made all three central to their administration including all the the tax cheats in Congress and cabinet appointees to the ethics woes of folks like Rangel and Murtha.
Folks got angry because of the unrelenting, constant drumbeat of negative news focusing, to a large degree, on Republicans supposed hypocrisy because they are generally known as the ‘Values’ party.
Fine.
The Democrats can just as accurately be described as the ‘Taxes’ Party. Why is it that with the almost comical procession of high profile Democrats failing to pay their taxes that a similar drumbeat is not raised against them?
I know that’s a rhetorical question and that the answer is self-evident - unadulterated, blatant, un-American bias from the MFM.
This bias needs to be pointed out at every opportunity by each and every Republican, every time a microphone is stuck in their face. I think a large part of the half asleep public out there would wake up to that kind of blatant bullshit. Not all, but enough to give us a fighting chance next time around.
Oh, and I almost forgot. Add radical, extremist to every comment describing democratic policy. Make it impossible for the media to edit it all out.
I never particularly liked the idea of talking points but this is the time for it. Speak with one voice to overcome the dilution and editing that the media will inevitably put on every republican statement.

Back in the mid-70’s she spoke at an event a friend of mine attended. One of her points was (what’s new?) that evil corporations needed to be controlled and taxed heavily.

From Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s Web site (he’s not my rep, but I wish he was):
“The Congressional Budget Office [CBO] told us a couple of hours ago that this is a job killing, not a job making bill,” said Congressman Roscoe Bartlett explaining why he voted against the so-called stimulus bill today. The final vote tally was 246-183. There were 228 Democratic yeas. Congressman Bartlett was among all 176 Republicans who voted no joined by 7 Democratic members. Congressman Bartlett concluded, “I hope this will work, but it would be the first time in history that a government could borrow and spend an economy out of a recession. The word will get out that this ‘stimulus’ is just a diverting headline for a big government grow bill. This fulfills the wish of liberals to expand government spending and control over Americans’ lives and their hard-earned money.”

All very true….but all of this reinforces that all elections have repercussions. 54% of the American people decided that the left needed to be in power, and the left decided that this gave them an unlimited mandate (interesting how when Bush got about 54% of the vote - that it was a narrow victory without a mandate….) to invoke their ideals and spending towards pet projects designed not to create or maintain jobs, but to maintain their power.
Even more scary - despite the hammering this is going to do to the economy and the country as a whole, 30% of their base will continue to support them….blaming the failure on either the ‘betrayal’ by the Republicans to not be bipartisan or the fact that they didn’t go far enough.
For those who don’t remember the Carter years……you will be living them very shortly.

Better than a taxpayers’ revolt is reading this turkey, once it’s been signed and applying for each and every little thing we cal each even faintly be said to qualify for.
I wrote above sort of tongue-in-cheek that we could qualify for assistance in weatherproofing our condo.
What if we all did this?
What if each of us made darn sure that we got our personal money’s worth back from this bill?
We read with better comprehension skills than 0’s constituents do.
We could do this.
We could break this bill in our direction.
At least on paper we could flood the system with applications.

re: #265 Killgore Trout
My point is that we shouldn’t complain when these big important bills get passed without people reading them. They don’t read them. The Republicans don’t. The Dems don’t. I think the selective outrage when the other side does it is disingenuous.
So, the Republicans spent like drunken sailors - and they got booted from power.
So now the Democrats are spending money like….
Not only spending, in fact, but substantial pork-barrel spending; the vast sums directed to pet causes of powerful Democrats and liberal interest groups having nothing to do with stimulating the economy have laid bare the fraudulence of Obama’s claim to be against government by earmark and favor. Big Government is back, baby, and it’s so hungry.
and we can’t say “oh shit!”?
I realize your point is more about reading the bills - but this bill is thicker and costlier than anything ever - I think that merits some criticism.

This is almost a strawman…..and I agree, there are probably those on both sides of the aisle who are so wrapped up into ideology that they do not spend time reading the bills - or even reading the summaries of the bills their staff’s who do read the things provide. And yes, there are members of both parties who can be held in almost equal levels of contempt by many who hope that the elected officials approach our hopes of being fair, smart, rational, and reasoned.
But can you provide me with some hard examples of Republicans demonstrating as a group an equal level of hubris and arrogance as the Democratic leadership with regards to this bill? They are acting as if 80% of the country supported them while at best it was about 54%.

And of course, this reminds me of the old Five Stages of Project Management:
1: Initial enthusiasm
2: Disillusionment
3: Search for the guilty
4: Punishment of the innocent
5: Reward for the undeserving
Things are moving fast. We’re zipping through the last two stages simultaneously.
Tell me about it. All this talk of investing in Green technology through the Stimulus Package along with whispers of punishing oil companies maybe one of the many reasons I lost my job yesterday along with 35 people with an oil field service company. This time last year we were actually talking about expanding but various forces beyond my control are starting to begin the oil bust this year. We had already laid off 45 people, the company is just culling the work force to survive all the idiots in power in halls of government from Denver to Washington DC. Yes, oil prices fell but the damage to the oilfield in terms of manpower and jobs is not being helped by those in government wishing to control the economy.
The greatest lesson not being learned is that oil companies did very well during the President Bushes terms with billions of dollars in profits because the government had cut taxes! The price of oil helped yet we had yet also let oil companies tap more US soil, shores and deep water for more of the black gold. The amount of jobs created and wealth would have kept the oil boom going for another 10 to 20 years. Also tax cuts would allow more money towards R&D, exploration, better metallurgy, drilling tools, direction drilling, shipwrights (ships, sea drilling rigs and barges), metal shops, tool and dye shops, transportation, housing, explosives (we use shape charges to fracture rock formations), chemicals, cement, and, I don’t know, grow the damn economy both within and without the oilfield!
I’m sorry for going on such a long rant. I’m good for a little over month financially to find a new job thanks to my separation package and final checks, I just wish I could find new job under more ideal circumstances. This oil bust is being felt throughout the oilfield in this region of the United States with Nabors closing down all of its drilling rigs in Colorado last I heard. So expect fuel prices to start to go up faster. I think I’m going to invest what money I can in indium commodities since the price is sure to sky rocket due to LCDs and Solar Panel demands.

Ok, agreed but they WERE going to try to push it through regardless of public opinion. (remember it on C-Span? they showed the conference of the senators when they were trying to reconcile the House and Senate bills?) They BACKED OFF when the emails and phones started burning up and even THEN they said they would try again and McCain had some really 17th century aristocratic moments concerning the public’s opinion. No they TRIED to do it but even with the media on their side they backed off in the face of the size of the opposition. If you are wondering why Republican Representatives show solidarity against the stiffulUS bill and Republican Senators do not, it’s a no brainer. Term length is the major factor. Reps know we just might remember who voted against the America most of us know and love after 2 years or less…Senators are in far deeper financially with lobbyists and special interest groups not to mention a much longer period to duck and hide for the voters to forget who the hell sold us out to Socialism!
Any Republican who votes for this bill should be driven from office at the earliest convenience. I, for one, will remember their names…a swift tar and feathered rail ride from stiffulUS central would suffice until they can be voted against!

Hmm, let’s see. $13 a week in a tax cut….no, wait, I earn more than $75K, so it’s less than that….about $8 a week versus Ahnold’s solution to CA’s problem - my sales tax will be 9.75%, my income tax increases 5%, my vehicle license fees double, ……. and now I’m in the hole about $50 a week. Yes, my personal spending is going to be down.
How about the feds……you’ve added $800 billion to the debt, according to the CBO, it’s real impact is closer to $2.7 trillion….not including the inflationary impact of adding that much to the money supply. That’s reducing the overall spending how? By not spending $3 trillion?

I just call it ‘stupidity’. More people can relate to that term.
Trying to advocate a bill contrary to public opinion does take a unique flavour of stupidity - but ultimately, they couldn’t just slam it through. I would venture to guess that in the last week, the calls against Porkulus was as far against as against shamnesty, but regardless, we had Dems saying ‘we won’ and slaming it through with only the support of 3 RINO’s….and breaking their own promise to let the final bill be reviewed for at least 48 hours.
Both bills were stupid. But, one passed through the callous actions of some while the people were able to impact the other. That is the difference to me.

Look, there are oil exec’s and company’s that seek to maximize their profits, but this is also the time of year where refineries begin to switch from their mandated winter blends to their summer blends.
Here’s a solution, if we actually permitted more refineries to be built to the point where we had 110-115% demand covered, we could do this and not impact supply. So, who are the ones stopping the development of refineries?
Yes, one can blame the oil companies for not moving more refineries offshore where labor and capital costs are less than in the US, even after calculating transportation costs, but how many new refineries have been built in CA in the last 30 years even though its population doubled?

Slightly OT Opinion:
The problem with the Democrats isn’t that they are just as corrupt as the Republicans, it’s that the Democrats are also completely devoid of any connection to the basic tenets of reality (economic, foreign policy, human behavior, physics). While the GOP contains its nutty wing (the Earth is 6000 years old types) the nuts don’t have enough numbers to affect every policy decision. The Dems nutroots have effectively throw out or marginalized every liberal-moderate-conservative voice in their party that disagrees with the far left views of Pelosi-Reid cabal funded by George Soros. The current Democrat Party would have no place for the likes of Harry Truman, JFK, or even Tip O’Neill today. This bill is only the start of a long four years.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A restaurant worker was accused of trashing the place in an attempt to get fired and collect unemployment compensation. A criminal complaint filed Thursday said a 35-year-old man showed up at a Qdoba restaurant and started throwing brownies and cookies on the floor.
The man then went into the kitchen and threw pots and pans around, then went into a storage area and threw boxes of hot sauce on the floor.
Police said the man told them he was trying to get fired and collect unemployment .
