Safari 4 Ups and Downs

Science • Views: 2,417

After a couple of days of using the public beta of Safari 4, there are three main points of contention interrupting my workflow.

1) I post to LGF primarily by using a Javascript bookmarklet (a bit of Javascript code that works as a bookmark) that pops up a new window containing the form for posting an LGF article. (It does this with the Javascript window.open() method.) By putting this in the first slot in Safari’s bookmarks bar, I can pop up the form window simply by typing Command - 1. In Safari 4, however, the form appears in a tab in the same window, which is a pain. Ooch. You can get it to open in a new window by Control-clicking the bookmarklet, but again it’s an extra step.

I discovered that if you turn off pop-up blocking, the Javascript window.open method does work properly from a bookmarklet. But you don’t want to turn that off, unless you like hundreds of advertisement windows all over your monitor screen. Hopefully this problem is an oversight and will be fixed in later releases.

2) The HTML accesskey attribute, which assigns hotkeys that trigger page elements when pressed with Control, works inconsistently. For example, the LGF search field at top right of the page uses the accesskey ‘S’. The code looks like:

But it doesn’t work at all in Safari 4. Safari 3, no problem. Some accesskeys seem to work, however, like the formatting buttons in our comment posting form. Again, it’s probably a bug that will be fixed in later versions.

3) Safari 3 had a very nice user interface touch that’s lacking in Safari 4: when a page was loading, the URL turned into a progress bar. I didn’t even realize how much I relied on that for a visual cue about whether pages were loading correctly until it was gone. Now there’s a little rotating wheel indicator instead. Bring back the URL progress bar, Webkit developers!

UPDATE at 2/26/09 3:19:05 pm:

In case you haven’t seen it elsewhere yet, you can tell Safari 4 to put the tabs back to their Safari 3 position (under the bookmarks bar), by entering this line into the Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO

(Hat tip: Let’s Roll.)

UPDATE at 2/26/09 4:58:29 pm:

To get that loveable old progress bar back, give the following two commands in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

I have three main points of contention that have been interrupting my workflow.

Charles, why do you hate Christians?

I installed Saf. 4 last night on my Mac, but haven't played with it much yet.

In a socialist regime there is no place for a 'progress' bar. You will just have to deal with the 'happy circle' to get you through.

Has anything been done to the pages which could affect load time? Its taking forever to get the main page or new threads to load.

One thing I don't like about Safari 4 is that the designers are making me move the cursor more to do the same function - e.g., creating a new tab, getting rid of the reload button on the bar... (yes, I know there are keyboard shortcuts.)

Also, Safari 4 is crashing on some Japanese websites I visit.

I think it has to do with the Safari developers who thought a spinning wheel of death was much more appropriate versus the URL progress bar. If they simply unclenched their fist, many of these bugs would simply disappear.

Representation is by states. DC is not a state. They are basically running off US law.

The 23rd fixes the issue about voting for President, but it does not grant the District statehood.

Residents *could* be allowed to vote as part of VA or MD, but I think that would require some Constitutional maneuvering as well.

Section 1. The District constituting the seat of government of the United States shall appoint in such manner as the Congress may direct:

A number of electors of President and Vice President equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives in Congress to which the District would be entitled if it were a state, but in no event more than the least populous state; they shall be in addition to those appointed by the states, but they shall be considered, for the purposes of the election of President and Vice President, to be electors appointed by a state; and they shall meet in the District and perform such duties as provided by the twelfth article of amendment.

Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

Amendment allowing for the Presidential electors seems to imply they are not a state, therefore not entitled to Senators or Representatives.

The money shot is in paragraph TWO:

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

There's a Safari plugin that adds that feature -- Saft.

I actually bought this one, because it has that and other useful features:

[Link: haoli.dnsalias.com...]

I actually bought Saft in like 2005 but i stopped using it a year later when i got Omniweb. =) Omniweb is still something amazing and was worth the money too. Maybe I should download the latest Saft version just to install it and try it with Safari 4.

I wish there was a Saft for Windows, but there isn't.

But Obama is smarter, and has a Dem majority, even if you count some blue-dogs. They will go for the scary gun ban as a slap at Bush, but the logical step is a ban on imported ammo, followed by a tax and/or onerous "micro-serial" requirements with waivers for LEO and military only.

The best thing about Safari 4 is that you can use it to view the latest post at zomblog:

San Francisco welcomes William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn

Former Weather Underground leaders William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn made an appearance at San Francisco’s Modern Times Bookstore on February 21 to promote their new book Race Course Against White Supremacy.

I attended the event for one reason only: To see what kind of reception San Francisco would give to these two former terrorists.

The presentation was a little awkward and stilted, so there never was a proper “everybody clap now” moment, but this short video shows that the crowd did give them vigorous applause whenever the opportunity arose: The first part shows one of the ovations for Ayers, and the second part shows one of the ovations for Dohrn.

etc.

Also note this topical reference:

Just like our new Attorney General Eric Holder, Dohrn and Ayers think the United States is “a nation of cowards” for not “talking about race” enough — as if 23 hours per day isn’t satisfactory. In this video, Dohrn says she agrees with Eric Holder. Which is exactly what Obama’s detractors were saying during the campaign — that Obama would appoint people to powerful government positions who would in fact be promoting the Ayers/Dohrn philosophy. And now we know — that’s exactly what has happene

Canada assumes leadership role at anti-Semitism summit

Jason Kenney, (minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism), in a speech to the conference reflected Ottawa’s firm pro-Israel position and its intolerance of all forms of anti-Semitism,

“One can criticize Israeli policies without being anti-Semitic. But the argument is not about criticizing the politics of the Israeli government. Lord knows there’s enough of that in the Knesset. The argument is with those whose premise is that Israel itself is an abomination and that the Jews alone have no right to a homeland. And in that sense anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism,” Kenney told the coalition.

Hell yeah, that sure beats the groveling apology from the US delegation yesterday!

San Francisco welcomes William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn

Just like our new Attorney General Eric Holder, Dohrn and Ayers think the United States is “a nation of cowards” for not “talking about race” enough — as if 23 hours per day isn’t satisfactory. In this video, Dohrn says she agrees with Eric Holder. Which is exactly what Obama’s detractors were saying during the campaign — that Obama would appoint people to powerful government positions who would in fact be promoting the Ayers/Dohrn philosophy. And now we know — that’s exactly what has happene

Obama tricked us all by telling us exactly what he would do. Fiendish bastard.

You can be put on the 'Watch" list just because. I have seen it happen.
Your flying experience becomes more complicated, as you cannot check in &print out a boardig pass on line or in the kiosk. You must arrive much earlier & be cleared at the counter by a supervisor.
An 80 something gentleman in Boston was cranky going through security several years ago, so they put him on the 'Watch" list for spite.
It affected everybody with the same first & last name as there is no field for a middle initial.
They could put the screws to Ayers & Dohrn.

OK, now that we're on a slightly dead tech thread, here's my latest "feature" wish:

When there is a quoted (or replied to) post in a comment, with the link in the number of the quoted post, and you are on the same thread with that quoted post, it would be so nice if you could click on that and be whisked up to that post, and there would be a little greenish box that said "Return" that you could click on and it would take you back to the post from which you clicked. Sounds great, doesn't it?

Did it at least make sense?

204 notutopia  Thu, Feb 26, 2009 3:57:27pm

3) Safari 3 had a very nice user interface touch that’s lacking in Safari 4: when a page was loading, the URL turned into a progress bar. I didn’t even realize how much I relied on that for a visual cue about whether pages were loading correctly until it was gone.
Now there’s a little rotating wheel indicator instead. Bring back the URL progress bar, Webkit developers!

I don't know Charles, I'm becoming assimilated to that new and improved....little spinning wheel of death...

re: #145 ArmyWife

The violence in Mexico and it's spill over to Texas border towns is alarming. All the more reason to keep the American's protected with appropriate fire arms. For the record, gun ownership is illegal in Mexico. Sure seems to have done the trick to keep violence to a minimum, hasn't it?

This whole thing is nothing more than a ruse to attack legal gun ownership in the US. This section of the ABC article is telling:

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

If the Mexican drug cartels have been employing "automatic weapons and grenades," they may have come from US sources, but they sure as hell didn't come from gun shows or licensed firearms dealers. Private ownership of grenades is absolutely illegal, and fully automatic weapons require a ton of paperwork and en expensive license that very few people have.

This is another "manufactured crisis" they're trying to take advantage of.

The Drug Cartells are getting those weapons from us we trained most of them to help in the "War on Drugs" and they found out the the drug cartells pay better and I'm sure they took their weapons with them. Hell we are probably loading guns int he front door and things are so corrupt there that they are probably being sold out the back door as fast they are bringing them in.

You need to run the Terminal program to get to the Unix shell, then type those two commands with a Return after each one.

It's in Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal

If you have a Mac, you open the "Terminal" (it's in your utilities folder) and then under the File pulldown menu select "New Command" and then enter the little script and "Run" it!

For the record, how is Safari or "Windoze" these days? Last time I used it, a couple of moths back, still looked glitchy. Got Chrome, which works quite well - AND is missing my FF add-ons. Also went dual OS with Ubuntu 8.10 Linux ("Intrepid Ibex") which after downloading updates looks pretty good in their version of FF. Just wondering?

Usually when I fire up VMWare Fusion into Windows XP or Vista, it's to check something on IE6 or IE7, so I'm not keeping up too much with Safari on Windows. I do think you'd find that LGF looks and works better on Safari even on the Windows side.

Safari's pretty cool, but one thing I hate about Macs is that they don't have a right-click mouse button.
A friend has a Mac and asks me to help her when she's having trouble with it.
Things which I could do in a couple of seconds on a PC involve a complicated procedure and a lot of poking around on the Mac.
Infuriating.
In this respect, PC's with Windows are way better.

It only seems that way when you are unfamiliar with basic Mac procedure. To bring up the contextual menu with a one-button mouse, hold the Ctrl key and then click.
