Charles, your musical taste and mine are very similar. Metheny, Fleck. Tell me, you must like Scruggs and McCoury too?

4 JammieWearingFool  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 5:41:41pm

Not to be confused with Big Country by Big Country from their album Big Country.

Love Mark Knopfler and the Sultans, too. Brothers in Arms, what an album.

12 Truck Monkey  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 5:46:19pm

Love it. Kind of Pat Matheny"esque". Weird assortment of instruments, but it works. 2 soprano Saxaphones, Basoon, Steel drums, banjo. I kept waiting for a french horn to pop up.

Ahhhhh. Yes. Soothes my savage breast.

I wish we could post names on here. I just got an email from a Real Estate Agent that is hysterical. His first name is Larry and his last name rhymes. Glad it made me laugh, because I am realizing, I don't like house hunting!

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Yup, I am too old for this.

23 Wily  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 5:51:03pm

I still miss Flecktones member Howard Levy. Fortunately, I see him at my local convenience store every so often.

Besides I hate house hunting? I've decided I really like my old house and its charm. I am attracted to old houses. I'm discovering old houses in Richmond are in really, really bad school districts. ARGHHHGGHHHH.

I'm with you on the old homes. Charm, character, a soul ....and creaks! (I especially like creaks, like the house is breathing.) Didn't you JUST re do your kitchen!?

Maybe if you expand your search zone farther away from the urban area you might find something more palatable. (I know, that presents a whole new set of circumstances to deal with.)

Don't forget to check forsalebyowner.com ....that's the route lots of folks 'round here are going lately.

It will happen. :-)

28 LynnfromNZ  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 5:57:04pm

Wow. Yes Fleck's one of the musical geniuses of our day, but that's some mighty sweet fretless bass playing as well. Shame the audio quality isn't up to showing what the bassoonist is doing.

My cousin teaches in Richmond. You are absolutely correct.

35 LynnfromNZ  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:04:08pm

re: #31 ArmyWife

You live in Richmond? As in Virginia? If so, there are nice old houses in Ginter Park, and you can choose to send your kids to Munford or Fox, good city schools.

re: #35 LynnfromNZ

Thank you for that! I haven't moved (yet) but I found a house in Ginter Park I really like - I was just concerned with the schools not being great - so I was limiting myself to Chesterfield or Midlothian. I'll check out the schools you mentioned. Thanks again!

I ♥ Victor Wooten.

39 LynnfromNZ  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:12:14pm

Whereabouts? We used to live on Avondale Avenue.

Way it was when we lived there a few years ago, it was first-come, first-served on school signup day -- parents would go stand in line at four in the morning to sign their kids up for Mary Munford or Fox Elementary. There are some options in the city for higher-performing children.

40 ArmyWife  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:15:25pm

re: #39 LynnfromNZ

What about middle school? I need middle and hight - the oldest is off to college, the youngest going to middle school. I've been searching in the Midlothian school district, along with Swift Creek and Cosby. I have gone on my first official house hunting trip - I'm setting that up as soon as I pin point some houses. I am currently in Baltimore.

41 LynnfromNZ  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:19:14pm

re: #40 ArmyWife

Good question -- let me e-mail a friend who's still in the city with kids and ask her. Is there a way I can get in touch with you?

42 freedomsound  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:21:29pm

23 Wily

I still miss Flecktones member Howard Levy.

Oh yeah, he is quite amazing. Seen the Flecktones live several times back in those days. Howard Levy was like two virtuoso harmonicas playing together, but coming from only one guy.

As Bela used to say when introducing him, "We don't know if he has two harmonicas, two mouths, or two tounges. Only his wife knows for sure."

43 neocon hippie  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 6:21:55pm

I see Bela in ten days in duet with Malian kora master Toumani Diabate.

I've got an MP3 somewhere of a long version of Throwdown at the Hoedown with the Flecktones and Chris Thile. Pretty hard to beat.

Also, Victor Wooten is so hardcore...

50 HappyKafir  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 8:17:35pm

This is from their "Live at the Quick" DVD. I saw this on Great Performances on PBS and immediately got it.

If you liked this get the DVD. There is lots of other great stuff.
Two other memorable pieces were: Amazing Grace, played by the Bass player, and the Tuvan throat singer.

51 mamashawna  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 8:22:51pm

The first time I saw Victor Wooten play bass, I almost gave it up (was playing bass at the time....they are ALL AMAZING!)

52 adamd  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 8:26:30pm

I've been a huge fan of the Flecktones for years.
If anyone is interested, here's a link to a bunch of live recordings for streaming and download (with the band's blessing).

Was wondering who else would notice him, one of my favorite bass players.

54 Abu Al-Poopypants  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 9:53:41pm

the only time I saw Fleck in person was when he played Symphony Hall with and Charles' old boss Stanley and some fiddler.

55 Abu Al-Poopypants  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 9:54:21pm

(wow, that was almost an actual sentence)

56 Paul Green  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 10:25:18pm

Fan-fookin'-tastic -- many thanks! Saw Bela and his outfit in Scottsdale in the early '90s and again with Edgar Meyer in Mesa a few years ago. One of the finest muscians ever.

57 spaceman  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 10:27:10pm

Beautiful music. My favorite Fleck CD is Tales from the Acoustic Planet. It is such a strange and sublime mix of roots bluegrass with jazz and a bit of the old kitchen sink.

58 clgood  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 10:41:02pm

re: #57 spaceman

That's a good one. All the Flecktones albums are great, especially the first three.

I got to see them live in SF with Paul McAndless years ago. Wooten is a god on the fretless. (See if you can hear "Sinister Minister".) And they turned "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" into an audience participation number.

59 UncleSam  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 10:47:54pm

That was pretty cool.
But Allah will undoubtedly condemn you to The Eternal Septic Tank of the Infidels for posting a video of people playing music and enjoying themselves.

Can't you put up a few nice beheading videos?

That would please Allah and bring you 72 raisins in Paradise...

60 So?  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 11:10:59pm

He's like the Pat Metheny of banjo playing. Bela even looks like him caught at certain camera angles, grimaces and all.

Wonder if they've ever played together? Probably.

61 Hucbald  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 11:20:44pm

Wow. Goosebumps or arms, back of neck, top of head. Amazing, especially when the bass player and the soprano sax player were feeding off each other.

Also, I'm trying to remember the last time I saw a sax player brave enough to play a sopranino sax for a solo. Getting anything like decent intonation with one of those things is nigh impossible.

62 Sizzlack  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 5:08:25am

re: #53 rhino2

Was wondering who else would notice him, one of my favorite bass players.

I saw Bela Fleck open for Dave Matthews at MSG back in like '98 and Victor Wooten came out and did this like 8 minute bass solo that was one of the craziest things I have ever seen. He left quite an impression on me.

63 Land Shark  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 6:22:20am

An excellent tune, Charles. I didn't know "Left Of Cool", the album Big Country is from, was out of print. I think I have all of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on CD, what a great group.

I've seen them live in concert 3 times, every show was awesome fun, with some of the best playing I've ever seen in person. One show was near Christmas so Victor Wooten played a blistering version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." If you get a chance to catch these guys in concert do not pass it up, they are amazing musicians.

64 UFO TOFU  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 6:22:52am

A Bela Fleck thread and I missed it? Damn.

65 Muadib  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 6:29:44am

Great music.

66 Land Shark  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 6:35:36am

By the way, "Left Of Cool", the album the song Big Country is on is still available at Bela Fleck and the Flecktones' website. In case any of you Lizards is interested, that is.

I love this band.

67 freedombilly  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 7:40:55am

I have been fortunate enough to see the Flecktones about ten times and Victor Wooten solo once. I have been blown away every time.

Victor Wooten is my hero. The effortlessness with which he plays a bass clef instrument is nothing short of magical. The flow and ease in his lines are truly inspiring.

The man sounds like Jascha Heifetz down two octaves.

And if you haven't heard any of Victor's solo albums do yourself a favor and check them out. His take on Norwegian Wood is, I'm repeating myself, magical:

68 UFO TOFU  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 8:05:16am

That is excellent!

Are you familiar with this guy?

70 hugoznutz  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 8:14:58am

Yes, Victor Wooten is amazing. BUT - give it up for his brother FUTURE MAN.

Amazing how the banjo and steel drums blend in together. Rather similar timbres.

71 freedombilly  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 8:38:16am

re: #69 UFO TOFU

Nope. Thanks for the link.

72 Land Shark  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 9:10:57am

re: #67 freedombilly

I have a couple of Victor Wooten's solo albums ("What Did He Say?" and "A Show Of Hands") and you're right, he is fantastic. He's as good a bass player as there is, period. And hugoznutz is also right, what Futureman does with that synth axe drummitar as he calls it is magical as well.

By the way, if anyone loves bluegrass like I do you'll love Bela Fleck's solo albums and with the New Grass Revival on the Rounder label before forming the Flecktones. And then there's his great albums with classical musicians and Tabula Rasa with Indian and Asian musicians. Bela Fleck is all about exploring music in all it's wonder.

73 hilljack  Tue, Mar 10, 2009 3:24:37pm

Victor Wooten is the god of all bass players!

74 Ben F  Wed, Mar 11, 2009 6:11:14am

Fleck also performs Big Country on Edgar Meyer's Uncommon Ritual CD, with Meyer on bass (natch) and Mike Marshall on guitar. Fleck and Meyer were two of the five master musicians in the Strength In Numbers pick-up band, whose Telluride Sessions CD is a must-have for any newgrass fan. I wouldn't say that the Fleck/Meyer/Marshall cover surpasses the original, but it is nice to hear the tune in a very different setting.

Uncommon Ritual, like many of Meyer's fusion collaborations, is well worth a listen. It's quite different from his two celebrated CDs with Yo-Yo Ma and fellow Strength In Numbers alum Mark O'Connor.
