Another Democrat in Trouble

US News • Views: 3,587

No wonder Democrat politicians are so quick to raise taxes—they aren’t paying them anyway.

California’s Rep. Pete Stark, a senior House Democrat who helps write the nation’s tax laws, has been claiming a $1.7 million Maryland home as his principal residence in recent years, although he represents the Golden State’s 13th District on the east side of San Francisco Bay.

The 77-year-old Stark has saved himself nearly $3,900 in state and county taxes by claiming the six-acre waterfront estate as his principal residence, according to an investigation by Bloomberg News.

Maryland law allows the tax break only to those residences used “for the legal purposes of voting, obtaining a driver’s license, and filing income tax returns.”

Notified of the discovery, a state official said an investigation would be launched.

Stark isn’t the only Democrat to use Maryland for this purpose: Soccer Dad: Maryland - the sanctuary state.

Stark will immediately be appointed to Obama's cabinet.

5 Dar ul Harbarian  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 9:17:21am

How can he legally represent his district if his home is in Maryland?

If I was a Republican in his district I would jump all over this.

6 Ford_Prefect  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 9:17:33am

I heard that there was a NY Congressman with the same exact issue.

May I suggest a variation of the Pol Pot solution for the Washington ruling class? March them out to the country and make them do real work with the real citizens of this nation.

A six-acre estate? Boy, how many homeless could he house there, including tents?
He's a Democrat, so he should open his house to the needy.
Right. Some lobbyists who can't get a hotel room, maybe.

Now in his 19th congressional term, the liberal Democrat and one of several Californians in House leadership under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, confirmed that he and his wife Deborah are indeed not registered to vote in Maryland.

I am sick of these people thinking the laws don't apply to them.

In Mass, there was a referendum to lower the tax rate. It passed, but it is still allowed to pay the older, higher rate. Every congressman who votes for higher taxes should have to pay his back taxes at the higher rate. And his wages should be garnished until they are paid.

Another reason why newspapers are failing. It took a wire service to break this story. The San Francisco Chronicle is failing, because its more a liberal fan club rather than a newspaper. "Speaking Truth to Power" only counts when its Republicans who are in power.

Thanks to the Internet, millions of Americans are finally being exposed to the double standards and hypocrisy of the liberal media.

I'd have to search for it. This was the reduction from, I believe, 5.95 to 5.

With the jerks in government, if the income tax was abolished, we'd be seeing a 25% sales tax and a $1.00 gas tax.
Where I live, there are usually Republicans running, and I vote for them, but they don't get elected. That's what we get for being in the same district as Acton.

Good thing they showed her which end of the shovel to stick in the dirt. She clearly had never used a shovel before.

I don't fault her for being an inexperienced gardener. She's a city girl, that's fine. It's the phoniness of the whole thing, the scolding, schoolmarmish manner trying to shame us into doing what she says.

Stark would have been an excellent choice to lead HUD.

I was surprised to learn that Ray Lahood, the new Secretary of Transportation, didn't have a history of DUI's and still had a driver's license given Obama's picks thus far.

Ray LaHood is a Combine RINO. He has very close ties to the powerbrokers in Illinois such as one William Cellini. LaHood is into the pigsty up to his waist.

One of the MSM sites (ABC?) had a piece on the gardening, and it asked, "Are you going to follow the First Lady's lead and plant a garden this year?" Some of the comments following were rightfully huffy, like "She didn't exactly invent gardening. I'm planting a garden like I have every year." Follow her lead!

Pete Stark served in the US Air Force two years and was a BANKER before entering Congress.

Stark serves on the Ways & Means AND joint TAXATION committees in Congress.

So Stark knows a little more about taxation than he's letting on.

Stark-Raving. You got it.

Here he is at his insane worst: "...If we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement"... on the House floor...

And here he is threatening to throw somebody out a window...

I actually salute Michelle's garden. I adore the girls' swingset. She's being a First Lady and the girls are being kids. Now we need Obama to be a President.

People will excuse away Stark's actions - it won't matter that he was elected to represent the District in which he is supposed to live - and doesn't. He is a (D) Democrat after all.

The important message is that he is gaming the system in order to SAVE MONEY ON HIS TAXES, WHILE VOTING TO RAISE YOURS.

Disgusting and despicable!

119 mattm  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 9:57:06am

I'm sure the MSM will get right on this, just like it it was a Republican.

A corruptocrat in trouble is a temporary thing.

Our founding fathers are spinning. it's time to flush our congress.
Enough of the - elected-for-life -- it only invites corruption.

Charles, his name is Fortney Hillman Stark. Political commentators who aren't owned lock, stock, and barrel by the Democrats often refer to him as Bay Area Democrat Fortney "Pete" Stark.

Just a style note to help product quality :^) .

The only problem is that Democrats only care about ethics when a Republican is at fault. I'd be very surprised if the people that voted him in office give a damn about this.

DEMOCRAT CODE OF ETHICS:

1. Get reelected.
2. Repeat number one.

In fairness they do punish their opponents too.

129 ParanoidPyro  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 11:30:32am

Maryland is suck a clusterfuck, I had to move away about a year ago, not long after Erlich (the first Republican governor in the state since Agnew) lost his re-election bid to they mayor of BALTIMORE, one of the worst freaking cities in the country.

130 Tazzerman  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 12:08:38pm

I'm still waiting for SOMETHING to happen to Rep. "Cool Cash" Jefferson.

Anybody really think anything will happen to Stark? Come on. He's one of Pelosi's most loyal minions.

131 NCO77  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 12:08:48pm

It is time for a clean sweep. In 2010, we need to change every rep and every senator possible, and in 2012 (if we survive that long) clean the obama's out of Washington for good.
Maybe its time for a real third party to emerge.

132 Ming  Mon, Mar 23, 2009 2:00:45pm

Of course Stark is a Democrat, as many corrupt people in Congress are. But I think there's a larger point to be made here. Powerful people, from people in Congress to AIG executives, get all kinds of perks, exemptions, special laws, etc. from the government. Some call this "capitalism". But when a family tries to take advantage of some law to hold onto their home for another month, so their kids can have a roof over their heads, some call this "socialism". We need politicians to set better examples.

re: #117 Iron Fist

Possibly something related to the Lawrence Phillips syndrome?

The difference is of course obvious. Phillips is finally where he belongs, while the likes of Stark and friends seem to have an endless get of jail free card.

===

There are several areas in Maryland where the home average price is well above one million each. Potomac and certain neighborhoods of Annapolis are at the top of the list, with certain neighborhoods in the Northern Baltimore (way old money) suburbs and around Fredrick not far behind.

Don't think regular Marylanders, who actually work for a living, get any of those tax breaks. The State of Maryland regularly audits people living far below the poverty line, squeezing every last nickel and penny they can to pay for socialist vaporware programs that never seem to benefit anybody but those who are on the programs payrolls. Which usually includes the people who voted for those vaporware programs in the first place.

This is the state that increased its in-state college tuition by over 100% in less then a decade, while allowing the children of some of the richest people (Saudi) on the planet a tuition free education at the same schools.

One of, if not the most corrupt states in the nation, on an annual basis.

(*spit)

I met him.

I almost came to blows with him.

I hope that this little bit of corruption results in some jail time for him.
