The Dept. of Defense briefed the president this morning, they told OBAMA that
2 Brazilian soldiers were killed in Iraq . To everyone’s surprise, all the
color drained from Obama’s face.
Then he collapsed onto his desk, head in his hands, visibly shaken, almost
in tears.
Finally, he composed himself and asked, ‘Just how many is a brazilian?’
This is especially funny since he obviously has no understanding of billion
or trillion either.

Father Jenkins: Allow me to add my voice in the rising chorus of alumni and others who love our University in expressing my extreme concern and dissatisfaction over your decision to invite President Obama to give the 2009 commencement speech and give him an honorary degree. I am not sure yet whether this is a more egregious lapse than the plan to install Tariq Ramadan as a professor a few years ago. I graduated from Notre Dame in 1995 and like you, love our University. One of the things that makes Notre Dame such a special place is it’s deep roots in Catholicism and it’s tenets. Notre Dame has always stood for something. The tradition of inviting sitting Presidents such as Eisenhower, Reagan, and both Bushes has been a source of pride for our University. However, I do not think that it was appropriate at this point in time to extend this honor to President Obama. President Obama holds views on abortion and stem cell research that are anathema to Catholic doctrine. His example of faith is seen in his twenty years as a member of Trinity United in Chicago,in thrall of Reverend Wright and his wayward teachings. Even if, as you say, this honor you choose to bestow on President Obama is not an endorsement of his policies, you give legitimacy to Obama’s policies by doing so. Worse still, you indirectly bless them from the Catholic standpoint because Notre Dame is so strongly associated with Catholicism. You know this to be true. Maybe you could invite Speaker Pelosi in 2010 and she can discuss her understanding of our Catholic faith with us some more. I also do not understand your statement that you feel President Obama is “…an inspiring leader who has taken leadership of the country facing many challenges: two wars, a really troubled economy, he has issues with health care, immigration, education reform, and he has addressed those with intelligence, courage and honesty.” What examples of intelligent, courageous, and honest addressing of these issues have you seen in the last two months? In all fairness, President Obama did lift the Federal ban on stem cell research and lifted the Mexico City policy that prevented issuing taxpayer monies to international organizations that provide abortions. Somehow I doubt that those are two accomplishments that are congruent with Catholic doctrine. Beyond this, I, like many others, feel that President Obama has been nothing short of an embarrassment to this nation in the short time he has been President. Consider the myriad of problems with his cabinet picks, like Tim Geithner. Look at his disgraceful treatment of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Revel in the silliness of his Secretary of State’s recent Russian trip. Consider his compassion toward people with disabilities as demonstrated during his Jay Leno interview. Do you not see the almost daily examples of hypocrisy that come from his mouth? Why not just bring William Ayers to further sully our University? I understand that the a plurality of views and opinions is the lifeblood of a university and that there are some who support your decision. I realize that it is unlikely that you will reverse course. I ask that you respect the First Amendment rights of students to protest your decision now and at commencement without fear of retribution by the administration. There would most certainly be a large “0” on my mortarboard if I were graduating, that I can assure you. Real courage and real conviction would be to stand for moral principles and actually do the right thing. Withdraw the invitation until such a point that President Obama earns that privilege in the future, if he ever does. Until then, all you accomplish is cheapening the degree that I, along with many others, earned at Notre Dame, by giving an honorary degree to President Obama. Please consider this, reflect on this, and pray on this - then do the right thing. Return the focus of commencement back to the people to whom it belongs, the students who have toiled to earn that Notre Dame degree, and refrain from cheapening that degree by giving one to Obama.

A microcosm of what big government is like……
City Hall wants a sidewalk paved to nowhere
The unintended victim — a wholly appropriate word — is Jesus Barajas, who wants to rebuild a home on a lot he has owned for nearly 30 years. Instead of a comfortable retirement abode, he and his wife would be downsizing interior and exterior amenities to pay for $15,000 worth of asphalt paving to satisfy a city requirement for a sidewalk.

But what struck me is his game face tonight. When he was out campaigning, he had more of the ‘rockstar’ face, “love me love me love me, I love me so you will too”. In case any one is interested, I tried to do some fact checking about the 1 in 50 children are homeless stat thrown out by that reporter at Obama’s press conference. I think it came from the National Center on Family Homelessness report called “The Full State Report Card on Child Homeless in America”.
According to their report, which I downloaded, page 5 (of 220) gives their definition of “homeless” children:
QUOTE:
Definition of Homelessness Used in the Report Card
The Report Card describes homeless children from birth to age 18 who are accompanied by one or more parents or caregivers. By definition, they comprise a homeless family. Our counts and descriptions do not include unaccompanied children and youth (e.g., runaway, throwaway, or homeless youth).
The Report Card uses the definition of homelessness contained in the subtitle of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, Title X, Part C, of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and adopted by the U.S. Department of Education.
The definition includes children and youth who are:
• Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason (sometimes referred to as doubled-up);
• Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative
accommodations;
• Living in emergency or transitional shelters;
• Abandoned in hospitals;
• Awaiting foster care placement;
• Using a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not designed for, or ordinarily used as, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings;
• Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings; and
• Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described above.
I didn’t get a chance to look up the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act where they are getting their definition from. But it clearly includes children who are living with relative’s and friends and even foster kids.

honestly, that’s the worst domestic idea he could have. way to kill the real estate market for middle class homeowners. a nation of renters…and rents will skyrocket because landlords also get that mortgage interest deduction.
Really? I thought that was his one good idea. It’s a subsidy for buying homes on credit. That distorts the market.

re: #230 Right mind left
Best example was Barry’s response to that question on whether his spending orgy is hypocritical given his calls to not pass on our problems to future generations. First off, he blamed Republicans for being hypocritical even though his budgets are worse by a factor of 10, then he riffed on why the CBO estimates are worse than his (they are both outrageous) and then he wrapped up with a warning that we won’t get any growth unless we invest in energy, education and healthcare. All the time, the moron journalist who asked the question was bobbing his head like one of ththose bobble-headed doggies you see on dashboards. Investing more in education is the answer? We pour more money into education than any other country on the planet. The press corps is a disgrace.
356 | lifeofthemind Tue, Mar 24, 2009 6:26:00pm |
Did he ever give an answer on why use fetal stem cells, when he did not challenge the reporter’s contention that adult have proven more promising? Not my claim it was the question and BHO just wandered away from it, like he ran into the desert and came back an hour later. Then when asked again if there should be someone other than the researcher making the call he blathered again, even though his own bill gives no review to politicians or courts, only to the scientists concerned. Whichever side of the issue you are on his performance was frightenngly incompetent. In England a politician who handled questions that badly would be eaten alive by the press and by other politicians.

I wouldn’t expect him to do a bad job. These things are a scripted as any kabuki theater ever was. If there were a surprise, it’d be a interesting development.
I dunno. Not all of the questions were softballs. I’d have preferred, of course, he called on the WSJ to ask him some HARDER questions about the economy “Plan”, and with FOLLOWUPS. But overall, it was a decent performance, even if it was a performance.

Bush Deficit vs. Obama Deficit in Pictures
Recently posted at The Heritage site.
President Barack Obama has repeatedly claimed that his budget would cut the deficit by half by the end of his term. But as Heritage analyst Brian Riedl has pointed out, given that Obama has already helped quadruple the deficit with his stimulus package, pledging to halve it by 2013 is hardly ambitious. The Washington Post has a great graphic which helps put President Obama’s budget deficits in context of President Bush’s.

Had to think about the press conference.
First, are all reporters plants now?
Second, how in the hell can you look at Medicare, Medicaid, the VA Hospital system, the FDA, and any other U.S. Federal Government health agency’s budgetary and performance history and conclude that it knows anything about lowering cost and improving service?
Government’s only incentive by its very nature is to grow and grow and grow. It will not save cost because it has no incentive to save cost. It’s only incentive is self perpetuation and growth. That is its history and all Obama will do is give that tendency crack in the form of more revenue.
The only way you could actually believe an of the prognostications he gave tonight would be if you totally forgot history.

I’ve noticed that Obama was down on the economy, our local TV was down on the economy. Obama saw the light changed course and dropped the doom and gloom and went looking for good news. In concert our local media did the exact same dance step. The collusion here is out of control. Repubs need to knock a few media marbles around. instead of seeming so weak.

I don’t comment often anymore (I lurk a lot), but I felt compelled to tonight. I haven’t read all the comments, but I could hardly bear to sit on the couch watching the latest “Good News” from the White House, but I suffered it. I came away with some enlightenment. And thus, my monologue.
If I hear “inherited this crisis” once more, I’ll barf. If I hear we have to “focus” I’ll scream. I didn’t hear any details on how these crises will be solved.
I recently lost my father and I stand to inherit some of his estate. One aspect of his legacy that I really wasn’t thrilled about was his little cat. Once Pop died, somebody had to manage and care for the cat properly, and tag, that was me. I accepted that task responsibly. That problem was solved with a place at the local Humane Society recently and a hefty donation on my part to place her in an adoptive home. Problem for me solved, and I’ll continue to make donations until the little critter is adopted out. It is called accountability for the legacy inherited. I don’t care about a tax deduction for that donation; I call it being responsible for that for which I accepted from a previous generation.
I received a lovely new digital camera for Christmas from my son’s family. It came with a 91-page manual and more features than I can absorb overnight. I have finally figured out how to focus it manually, but there comes a time when I will have to push the shutter button and see how my efforts have paid off. Tonight I heard a lot about the need to focus, but nothingness about pushing the shutter button.
Now about “education”. Let’s throw some more billions of dollars to public education as we were advised tonight. Well, that’s lovely for those who want to learn, have the ability to apply their education into productiveness and not just test scores, and can actually tell the difference between their report card grades that will satisfy their parents, teachers and gummint, and those that show true absorption of learning. I heard nothingness tonight from our illustrious leader about how these increased billions of dollars are going to fix the problem of our students not taking ownership of their education. The mindset of many American students seems to be that parents, teachers, the gummint, and everybody else is responsible for their education except them. What kind of money can cure that mindset?
I could go on and on, but I’ve used up my $.02 worth of opinion. Maybe subsequent comments from me will deal with my opinion of the mentality of “poverty” in America.

No, his father wasn’t an immigrant. He was an international student who was here for an education after which he went back to Kenya. We have tons of those today. Listening to Rove talk about Obama is going to be fairly predictable and partisan. Despite his partisanship and predictability, Rove made some good points, but he’s also a weasel when it comes to this oversimplification about health care. Preventive care in some cases is very cost-effective and will save money in the long term. Preventive care in other cases (targeting low risk populations for expensive screenings) will be cost-prohibitive. See here. The best thing this administration can do to keep health care costs down is to realize the nuances of preventive care and spend accordingly.

Notice that ZERO seems to be moving away from the dual teleprompters to a single large teleprompter at the back of the room. It will keep his focus oriented to the center rather than that insipid side-to-side double-speaking style we’re used to seeing. Additionally the central large TOTUS can be seen with peripheral vision by someone like ZERO with 20/20 vision. It will allow him to gaze smoothly around the room and promote a more relaxed approach.
