We Got Mail!

Blogosphere • Views: 2,067

My post about the GOP’s disastrous decision to defend the “We want Obama to fail” meme brought some hate mail (which I expected) and some support too. First, the drooling haters:

aw, you poor baby. Do those mean national parties not agree with everything in your pretty, little head. well, you just roll around on the floor and have your hissy fit.

And to think i thought you were just a racist pig. it’s obvious - you have a massive crush on Governor Jindal. Can we expect to see you outside the Governor’s Mansion with Peter Gabriel playing on a boom box??? LMAO Grow up.

Chuck,

Why don’t you explain to your loyal sheep exactly how it is that the “vast middle” wants Obama to succeed? Um, succeed at radically altering the character of American society so that we more closely resemble, say, Sweden? Is that really want the “vast middle” wants and, therefore, is pulling for Obama.

C’mon Chuck! Even you’re bright enough to know that is bullshit. Aren’t you?

Then the supportive email:

Thank you for staying the course on non-blinkered, non-Kool-Aid-drinking conservatism. I’m of the same mind as you on numerous issues, particularly creationism. My wife and I belong to an organization called Republicans for Environmental Responsibility, and continually ask ourselves why there has to BE such an organization. It’s hard to be politically nuanced these days!

Best regards,
Jonathan

Hey…

Just wanted to say thanks for being a responsible and refreshing voice in the right-wing blogosphere. I’m a left-leaning independent and try to find voices that speak intelligently and rationally about our government and the issues around our country and world. The far left and far right blogs are reactionary, slavering and occasionally incoherent. You’ve done a great job finding rationality in an irrational time. Thanks for the great work.

What’s wrong with people?! At least Charles shows us a couple people who are rational enough.

What was the ratio of hate to supportive mail, Charles?

7 Ringo the Gringo  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 10:18:09am

Buzzsawmonkey got it right with his comment yesterday:

I have found, in the course of lawyering, that the worst thing one can do when making an argument is to go from Point A to Point D without enunciating and clearly laying out Points B and C, even—perhaps especially—when the line from Point A to Point D is crystal clear.

You lose the argument by leaving out the connecting dots.

The Republicans are doing that because by saying that they “want Obama to fail,” they are saying that they do not want him to savage the Constitution, cripple defense, give the government an inappropriate hand in the economy, etc.

All of these are good points. But by saying them in short form, “We want him to fail,” instead of clearly enunciating what they want him to fail at and why, they are failing to make their argument and its basis clear. That is why the “jury” of the American public is not buying their argument.

Had the Republicans been properly educating the public for the last five, ten, fifteen, twenty years, their short-form argument might work. But they haven’t, and they are compounding that dereliction now by making the short-form argument to people whom they have not prepared to understand it.

Got to love party hacks. If Obama could pull off his talk and actually succeed, more power to him. Unfortunately, he isn’t up to the task and failure seems inevitable, but I’m not going to wish it on him just so I can say “HAHA!” as we’re stuck cleaning up his mess.

I want America to succeed. We have freedom in this country; 52% of America excercised this right and voted for Mr. Obama. He has been rightfully elected and as much as I disagree with his policies, he does have the freedom to govern as he sees fit.

I don’t believe for a second that his socialist/marxist policies will succeed but I don’t wish him to fail as a human being. Regardless of his policies, my job requires that I defend him and follow his orders. My job also requires me to defend the liberty of every American and I will do so to the best of my ability. I love this country and want nothing more then for us to pull out of this morass. I wish we, as the loyal opposition, could agree on a way forward and defend that rather then debasing ourselves to the level of the left and wishing the president to fail. We are better then that, now let’s start proving it!

I learned about blogging at the time of Rathergate. Thanks to Drudge, here I am. How nice when I realized that not only is Charles sharp, and not only does he have a ton of awesome minions who notice things too, but he’s got a solid core of logic and sense.

It’s foolish to want one’s President to fail. Sure, we might think he’s awesomely screwing up, but to want him to fail, no matter what, means we want the USA to fail, especially now, in these tricky, perilous times.

I wish people would spend the time they spend hoping the President fails hoping and praying that he figures out how to succeed, and then does so, because that would be good for everyone.

I said this way late last night, so I’ll say it again:

For me, it’s not an issue of wanting him to fail. It’s that historically, I know these policies will fail. I would rather see my party get out in front of the proposals and offer effective and positive alternatives. It is in a positive alternative that we can convince the electorate we are the better party for the halls of power.

If this is the marketplace of ideas, and we feel we’re the better product how is heated rhetoric showing the American voters that our premise is true? If this is a marketplace, then our marketing needs improvement- badly. The consumers were dazzled by the packaging of our competition. We already know they will suffer buyer’s remorse, but we hurt the prospect of convincing these consumers to switch products by preemptively rubbing their noses in their mistake and exasperate it by additionally sounding as though we wish them to suffer the equivalent of food poisoning.

I believe the competition’s product will show itself it’s inferiority with little help on our part. We need to focus on marketing our product’s superiority, and an undignified media blitz is liable to instill zero confidence in our product. For the sake of our nation and our posterity, we simply must do better.

It’s true that hoping for any President to fail at least looks bad. I also cannot support a President that steadfastly promotes policies that are disastrous for the country in the long run. In the end, “hoping” for one thing or the other is worthless, as it has no effect on our situation.

Instead, I am convinced that what Congress and the President are doing right now is the wrong approach, given our history. Regardless of whether things improve or decline, I know that a more conservative approach would have resulted in a better outcome. You can’t saddle the citizenry with massive debt that results in little economic payback, and expect the economic situation of the country to improve.

True that. The hate mailers usually have some of the worst spelling and grammar offenses in their comments. They’re rarely fully thought out.

Also, bad reading comprehension, as in the case of the person who thinks Charles is moony over Gov. Jindal.

Some years ago, I wrote in to the Jerusalem Post website, and challenged Jonathan Rosenbaum’s assertion that there was no real anti-Semitism in the United States.

They make you leave an e-mail address on the site, or did at the time. I ain’t doing THAT again.

Aside from the nutjob who believed himself to be the rightful heir to the Davidic throne, and sent me his webpage as proof of his majesty, what I got back was one thoughtful response that even agreed with me, while making a point about what the thought the original author’s point was, and about seven hysterical attacks.

ALL of them told me, in no uncertain terms, that there was TOO anti-Semitism in the U.S. Which was what I had said. I was called naive, stupid, self-hating, ignorant of Jewish history, and a kapo, and was sent links to Stormfront.

I actually wrote back to a couple of these people pointing out that I agreed with them, or they with me, and it was Rosenbaum who’d said there was no American anti-Semitism. Same response back. They weren’t reading what either I or Rosenbaum had said, they were doing a knee-jerk reaction.

I found it interesting - to say the least - that the Republican Party has a “positive” alternative to President Obama’s 3.6 TRILLION DOLLAR Budget and the deficits it would produce and the enormous real tax increases which he is proposing.
Link: [Link: www.politico.com…]

And while I sincerely regret that Charles received ANY hate mail on this (or any other issues) I can understand why some people are concerned about the direction in which President Obama wishes to take this country.
Again, just to make sure my comment is not misunderstood, I do not want America to fail, at all, but do fear that President Obama is taking us down the road to Socialism - which has never worked anywhere it’s been tried and socialized medicine which has been, based on accounts of lizards in Great Britain and in Canada, a disaster.

I know I sound like a broken record sometimes when I keep recommending:

“The Forgotten Man” Amity Schlaes
“New Deal or Raw Deal” Burton Fulsom Jr.

But perhaps one way to address the current economy, budget proposal, and the other “plans” being put forward would be to take specific examples of what Roosevelt did, and what happened as a result, and do a side-by-side comparison to current proposals. Focus on the idea of “we’ve tried this before, and this is what happened then. This (fill in the blank) will take us down the same road.”

At least that way, we could move away from personalizing the issue, and at the same time provide food for thought for those folks finally realizing that we may not be going in the right direction.

Obama failure without something to replace the void isn’t good for most of us.

Really, we must be on the offensive, rather then the defensive. We are not going to beat them at their own game by playing by their rules. We must play by our rules.

Thing is, the GOP tends to be more ideological than the Dems. Makes it hard to align all of those with strong ideological attitudes to cross over and grasp other GOP members that might not hold that same strong ideological position on a particular position. Too many one issue idealogues.

So we have to start coming up with positions, alternatives, actual legislative ideas that solve real problems….

Always attacking the positions, not the man. We need to know the facts then we can contradict bad positions. I have learned that when I speak quitely and calmly to my child, she has to stop to listen….when I am screaming, she just screams back.

Politics is the art of compromise…we have to have alternatives that lead to actual solutions to problems.

Soros deserves the rant. The smug fascist kapo is apparently having a ‘very good crisis’ - earning $1.1 billion.

I’m still wondering who / what started the $550B late September run on the US Money Markets that really brought the banking crisis to a head.

We just need to find a presser with the stones to ask Obama if the gains Soros made at the expense of the suffering middle class should be taxed at 90%?

re: #151 subsailor68

No - do go on saying this.
I heartily second your advice on reading these books. What those two describe is by no means main-stream knowledge.

One thing I found jaw-droppingly amazing is that right after FDR’s death, a whole LLL academic industry sprang up, elevating him and making him into the icon he now is.
There was no criticism! And if people wanted to get on in academia, they knew they had to toe that line …

So - read these books, and use that information - because it gives chapter and verse on what was tried, how it didn’t work and why - and you can get an idea of what PB0 still has in store for you!

180 gulfloafer  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 11:03:00am

If the President fails then naturally the country fails. That seems rational enough. Why cut off your nose to spite your face? On the flip side, if some of these policies he’s proposing go through I fear our personal liberties will be in jeopardy. The numbers just don’t add up, it’s a shell game. How can you charge and borrow yourself out of debt? Debt of historic, nay, mind boggling proportions. Somebody has to pay in the end. The president alluded to the fact much of this would be predicated on the hope that somebody, somewhere, would invent a groundbreaking new technology. Did somebody figure out how to travel faster than the speed of light? If socialism ever succeeded in anything other than sucking the life blood from the productive part of society I’d like to hear it. My grandmother once told me “Sh*t in one hand and and wish in the other and let me know which one fills up first.” I HOPE// the worm turns soon but in the meantime I’m socking away some loot. I’m in the ant vs grasshopper mode. Something is seriously not right.

Henry Morganthau, FDR’s Treasury secretary, told Congress in May 1939: “We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong … somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises … I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started … And an enormous debt to boot!”

183 Bud Norton  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 11:08:41am

I am wit’ you, chief. The average American uninterested in following politics believes Obama wants what he (the average American) wants, so the phrase “I hope he fails” sounds like the speaker wants America to fail, regardless of how one tries to justify the remark. The analogy I use is someone who tries to bring rain and end a drought by starting fires all over the neighborhood. Do we hope he fails? That’s not the question. The question is why we are we allowing him to do something so foolish in the first place. One has to assume BHO’s goals are laudable (I don’t assume that, but you lose people if you ask them to believe any different), but the means are disastrous.

That whole “hope he fails” bit that started with Rush made me winch as well.

“Hoping” somebody “fails” — fails WHY? What’s the reason? What’s the solution? You have none!

The correct stance (IMHO) would be “Obama will not succeed and here’s why” and offer alternatives.

Not a quick and easy sound bite, but that’s just the way it is…

Respectfully disagree completely with you, Charles.
I hate the GOP as much as any good conservative should…. BUT, it is morally irresponsible to hope b. hussein obama and his policies suffer anything other that abject failure.

We are way past time to be nice. I hate obama. I hate his voters. I hate the clueless fucks in the middle that voted for him because they are clueless fucks. My love, my allegiance is only to America. … Only to the tenants of free enterprise, limited government, private property, individual responsibility and the rule of law under the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

To that end, I am MORALLY BOUND to hope b. hussein obama fails.

You are trading a little short term political expediency for what could be long term gain. We must make America a place where being b. hussein obama is impossible. His ilk must be shamed and shunned and scorned and made to be on the very very very very fringes of society. America should have no more than 2 or 3 hundred people in all the land that are b. hussein obama …. and they should be miserable. The trick is we have to quit being nice.

Every good American must quit allowing the b. hussein obama’s of the world on their property, in their workplaces. WE MUST ACTIVELY DISCRIMINATE FOR GOOD. Don’t sell b. hussein obama’s bread. Don’t loan them money. Don’t hire them. Do lay them off first. Do not let them near your kids. Daily, actively, eagerly, joyfully WE MUST HATE THESE PEOPLE.

Okay, end rant. GOD DAMN OBAMA. GOD DAMN HIM TO HELL.

The thing is it doesn’t matter what we want - Obama policies will fail for the same reasons socialism had always failed - the model of government usurping the right to make decisions and the idea of squeezing the productive members of society to finance feel-good ideas that don’t improve anything but the mood of the government apparatchik doing them - it does not work.
Democrats can’t wish socialism into succeeding, and neither can anybody else. So would everybody tell in most friendly voice that we want the Socialist Messiah to succeed or they would not - it does not matter, the result will be the same epic FAIL.

I am so disheartened that so many people in my party seem to have decided to let a radio guy think for them. There was an article a few weeks ago about the party going lowbrow and relying on the Limbaugh and Coulter wing to be spokesmen.

I know radio, its all a ruse. Especially talk radio, hosts will say things to get you fired up and to get ratings, they don’t really believe it. People are being so manipulated by entertainers in our party its sickening. Yet, we all have a hearty chortle at the Streisands or Sean Penn’s telling the libs how to think.

Bottom line, what Rush said was said to get attention and ratings, a diplomat wouldn’t have said it. It was said to excite rather than enlight.

And if that is what our party wants, then its over, shut out the lights, we can be a bunch of yahoos.

Graham Sumner :The type and formula of most schemes of philanthropy or humanitarianism is this: A and B put their heads together to decide what C shall be made to do for D. The radical vice of all these schemes, from a sociological point of view, is that C is not allowed a voice in the matter, and his position, character, and interests, as well as the ultimate effects on society through C’s interests, are entirely overlooked. I call C the Forgotten Man.The forgotten man… . He works, he votes, generally he prays, but his chief business in life is to pay.”

I’ve gotta say, that I respectfully disagree with Charles. Let me preface that by saying how disgusting it is that all you have to do is come out with a comment on an issue one way or another and people lash out with pure vitriol. I think it demonstrates where our society is at present.
I don’t think it wins any political points to pander to the middle, most of those in the middle have no substance to back up there opinions. In fact I believe pandering to the middle is what has led the GOP to where it is today. Its has been the Democratic Party’s M.O. to pander to the middle by use of focus groups and polls, and charismatic “American Idol” candidates the talk pretty and say nothing beautifully , and i don’t know if you’ve noticed but when they to campaign to the right and we campaign to the left, or center, they win elections. The only way the GOP can win elections, or public support is to stand on principal, to make clear the difference.
If republicans say ” I disagree with everything the president is doing, but I support him all the way and hope he succeeds”, how ridiculous does that sound? How does that help them win the next election?
When everything starts tanking, the markets, high inflation, massive tax increases and the real restlessness grows among the public, they will remember those who vehemently disagreed and will listen to that message.
All this aside, I still love LGF!

I think people in this country need to get over their love affair with political partys, skin color, sexual preference, religious beliefs and whatever their particular grievance group…etc., etc. is. We have been pitted, one group against another, to weaken us as a nation. It has been about divide and conquer. We have got to hang together as patriots for a common cause and to me that cause is to keep the United States united. What damn difference does it make if your a donkey, an elephant, gay, black or Barney purple if we don’t have a country left. We are headed down a dangerous path of destruction as a sovereign, free Democratic Republic and that is what matters the most to me. I don’t care who is POTUS but if their policies are going to destroy us then I want that person and their policies to fail.

218 ladycatnip  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 1:53:17pm

On my way to work and late to this thread.

I’m unclear as to what exactly others mean when they say, “I hope Obama fails.” Here is clarification on exactly what I mean when I say I wish the O fails:

I hope and pray Obama’s attempts at dismantling and deconstructing our capitalistic free market fails miserably. I hope and pray his attempts to nationalize banks and health care fail. I hope each and every attempt by the O’s administration to limit our freedoms fails. I hope the O fails to ram his socialist/Marxist agenda down the American throat. I hope the O fails in his promise to bankrupt the coal industry and fails to hike utility fees to an obscene level. I hope Obama fails to keep his promise to change our American way of life as we know it.

Conversely, I hope and pray the GOP and moderate dems are successful in blocking his massive spending bills and successful in stopping the power grab of our banks, hedge funds, executive pay, etc.

If Obama governs as a centrist, I hope he has a magnificent 4 years in office.

220 Boxy_brown  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 2:16:27pm

(again, to no one in particular)

One more thing, there is no such thing as a “conservative nanny state”. “Big government conservatism” is an oxymoron… this is another incongruity between what people people supposedly stand for and what they are actually advocating. Sort of like a “liberal” advocating intolerance…. It’s all so blasted annoying. I need to move to an island somewhere.

221 sixgunsamori  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 2:46:22pm

To say that I disagree would be a monumental understatement. Whether my disagreeing is respectful or not is of little import. I thank our host for the informative sight; but…
True, talk radio runs on controversy. Unfortunately, so does ALL MEDIA. Controversy is the great traffic generator, the perpetual motion machine that sells overpriced widgets to underpaid plebes.
McCain ran a clean campaign and retreated from any and all signs of impropriety. McCain was the media darling, that rare conservative who was not afraid to speak ill of fellow conservatives. He would not permit his followers to use Obama’s middle name for fear of appearing racist and islamophobic. In the end, it didn’t matter.Racist rants were created out of whole cloth and parroted endlessly to folks who should have known better, should have verified the truth of these statements before running with them. In our era what any conservative states is not determined by the content or context of his or her actual statement, but by the INTENT of the media reportage.
This is made worse by the feeling of some in media, some on our own side, that the conservative pie is a finite thing. If this is how you view your group and niche, your life will never be a happy or fulfilling one. You will always be looking at the size of everyone else’s slice and calculating how much smaller yours must be by contrast.
I see the pie as infinite. I will never agree with everyone on my side, nor do I expect to. I don’t lose sleep over that; as Will Rogers so eloquently put it, “we are all ignorant on different subjects”.
I want Obama to fail because that would be good for the nation: Socialism must be shown for the sham that it is to insure we never again fall for its vacant promises. We must articulate that government can only “give” what it has taken by force from someone else. Free goods that were gained at the expense of others are not satisfying to anyone with a healthy conscience or a dollop of grey matter twixt their ears. We must cease talking about what we deserve and what we are owed as a society and begin discussing what we can do for ourselves. Our last depression gave two generations of Americans a priceless education in terms of what they could do for themselves and their families… what they would do, if they had no other choice. If our economy collapses new generations will relearn these lessons. I want America to succeed. The office of the president is a symbol of our country, nothing more. His success or failure is immaterial to me.

222 hotei  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 3:12:39pm

Obama will fail this country and its citizens with his policies. I disagree that hoping these policies fail is either reactionary or a meme that does not deserve defending. This is, after all, merely politics. And I am of the opinion that history will bear out the disastrous consequences of his and the democrat party’s policies.

224 Bill K.  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 3:16:43pm

Wanting Obama to fail is really beside the point. He will fail if he continues on his present course.

The Lightworker doesn’t get some pass on reality where he can make a socialist economy work or where his global warming initiatives will create a green utopia instead of a return to the Stone Age or where his foreign policy of appeasing Islamic militants will make us safe.

The Republicans need to get off their inane creationist jag and start promoting a proper government agenda such a vastly smaller federal government and a strong foreign policy.

225 USBeast  Thu, Mar 26, 2009 3:28:52pm

I want President Obama to succeed. I want him to succeed at realizing how wrong he is. I want him to succeed in reining in the rabid elements of his party before they send this country down the drain. I want him to succeed at coming to grips with the fact that Islam is incompatible with Western Civilization and needs to be confronted with its shortcomings.

Failing this, I want him to fail…to win the next election.

Umm….Rush Limbaugh has done more to control the damage the Left - the Statists- the Marxists- and yes, the secularists have been and are doing to this Republic than most of the other”conservatives” combined.
The fact that he is confident and unapologetic in his support for this nation, our Constitution, The Bill of Rights and the Judeo-Christian tradition - civil society - that spawned those documents of course offends many “moderates.”
Of course those “moderates” spend most of their waking hours apologizing to the Leftist friends for being moderate, Christian, less than PC, not “progressive,”etc. Needing to be liked, approved of by the media, or invited to the”in” dinner party did not win battle for Freedom in 1776 and it sure as Hell will not retain what little freedom that remains here in 2009.
