The NEW YORK TIMES just mentioned the Obama administration's plans on paying for health care.
I believe this is the first time this is mentioned, although we've all been expecting it.
WASHINGTON — Struggling to find ways to pay for the president’s signature health care overhaul, the administration on Monday proposed to raise nearly $60 billion more over 10 years mostly from tightening rules for inheritance taxes affecting the wealthiest estates.
Best of luck with that.
Oh, and could someone tell me what book has an intro by Glenn Beck? Charles mentioned this the other day and I can't find the reference now.

In one of the Wyatt Earp movies, Doc Holiday confronts one of the bad guy's who has the drop on Earp and is about to kill him. The bad guy asks, why are you taking this risk just for him?
Holiday answers, `he's my friend.'
Bad guy: `So what. I got lots of friends.'
Holiday: `I don't.'

More class warfare. The estate tax is very unpopular and un-American, but Obama will be able to sell expanding it. I expect to see the gift tax raised eventually, since many retirees use it to escape the death tax.
And that book was probably The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen.

Me: Do you have it or not?
Clerk: We have an organic all-purpose soil conditioner that many people think is great for all over the garden.

re: #54 Kosh's Shadow
I recently saw a truck that said something like "Joe's Organics".
I felt like asking the driver if he had some benzene.
Every time I'm tempted to buy any "organically grown" food, I remind myself of a line from John Ringo's The Last Centurion, in which the narrator, Bandit Six, who grew up on a commercial farm in Minnesota, points out that "organic fertilizer", in the commercial food context, means "at some point this stuff was sprayed with liquefied s#!t".
At that point, my stomach gives a warning lurch, and I settle for the chemical-filled, evil, but just as nutritious and much cheaper stuff grown by more modern methods.
/I grew up on a (small) farm, and we used chemical fertilizers, weed and insect sprays, and the whole nine yards. I ate what we grew. Last time I looked, I was still alive.
cheers

I'm picturing a Queen of the May type deal, if the timing were right, but almost certainly a round of re-enacting the union of the Sky-god and the Earth-goddess on a newly-ploughed field by the light of the full moon. Possible the groom symbolically sowing the field, as it were.

In one of my chemistry class we subject potatoes from various sources to a battery of tests.
One of the interesting things we found, pesticide residue by the time they got to the store were extremely low. The other was that organic potatoes with out the protection of pesticide increase the manufacture of their own defensive chemicals, some of which are carcinogenic to higher levels.

In dealing with "organic" types, I've often found that the ones who believe that even those barely-detectable amounts of chemicals can kill you are also likely to believe in the efficacy of "homeopathic medicine", i.e. "tinctures" of various "natural" chemicals diluted in water until they are almost below the detection threshold on a gas chromatograph. IMHO, there is a great deal of self-deception, or outright delusion, in the "organic" movement.

As opposed to inorganic shingles, which I suppose would be made out of slate or something?
Contractor said they don't sell organic shingles anymore because it was discovered . . . they don't hold up. I believe they are made of all . . . green stuff --

Though arguably a bit biased, it makes me laugh when people equate chemicals with bad. What is in toothpaste, ya think? Even Tom's of Maine has silica as the abrasive agent to clean. That white stuff in oreos? All made with the help of clarifying agents (same with beer, same with sodas - those cans are lined with a coating to keep the metallic taste OUT of the beverage), anti-caking in medicine, baking powder, etc. etc.? Chemicals. Turning oil to gas? Chemicals.

This kind of crap has always irritated me - people invoking religion or conscience as an excuse to irritate, annoy, and impose upon others. Now, I'm not a great guy, or even really that good of a person, all things considered, but I don't invoke my culture, heritage, or anything else to compel others to tolerate my foolishness. We should try this to sell nuclear energy....
A bizarre consequence of the appearance of oxygen was the advent the world's first nuclear reactors. Nuclear power from its inception has rarely been described publicly except in hyperbole. The impression has been given that to design and construct a nuclear reactor is a feat unique to physical science and engineering creativity. It is chastening to find that, in the Proterozoic, an unassertive community of modest bacteria built a set of nuclear reactors that ran for millions of years.

And that makes our President immature. But we don't need to exhaust our mental resources on pointing out the obvious most especially when there are bigger and far more important issues at play. The proposed medical insurance issue, the heisting of the financial sector, the unheard of power plays and strong armed tactics destroying our economy as for instances.
Charles wouldn't allow such things to be said on his blog because he is better than that. We are better than that. This, in my opinion, speaks louder than any "protest" we could lodge on this particular subject.

The non-asbestos fire proofing in WTC played a minor role in the collapse. The non-asbestos coating was more easily dislodged than the asbestos based.

IF the bride stays with the marriage, then yes. WE aren't that hopeful in this case. It's sad. But true.
again, my hopes and prayers for the correct outcome, whatever it may be.
Zen story of a farmer and wild horses:
A farmer had a horse but one day, the horse ran away and so the farmer and his son had to plow their fields themselves. Their neighbors said, “Oh, what bad luck that your horse ran away!” But the farmer replied, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”
The next week, the horse returned to the farm, bringing a herd of wild horses with him. “What wonderful luck!” cried the neighbors, but the farmer responded, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”
Then, the farmer’s son was thrown as he tried to ride one of the wild horses, and he broke his leg. “Ah, such bad luck,” sympathized the neighbors. Once again, the farmer responded, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”
A short time later, the ruler of the country recruited all young men to join his army for battle. The son, with his broken leg, was left at home. “What good luck that your son was not forced into battle!” celebrated the neighbors. And the farmer remarked, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

American Spirit. Fastest growing tobacco brand in the country. They're additive free cigarettes, but they also have an organic variety. I recommend them to folks trying to quit, to switch to this brand to get off of all the other chemicals the other companies put in their tobacco. It's a gross list of chemicals and other weeds in the major brand names' products. As if smoking wasn't bad enough. I would link to them, but I don't think that's appropriate.

Yes, and that was a hard one to kick. They STILL have an opium problem there. Cultural factors play a huge role, to be sure.
Funny thing about opium-smoking, though. It wasn't the habit per se that pissed off the government, it was the fact that the trade was monopolized by foreigners. From what I've read from pre-Republic China's history and way of life, the opium addicts were largely functional, and it was, in fact, viewed as a nasty, stupid habit, but not as some sort of horrible vice or "the ruin" of anyone except those who let themselves be ruined by it. Opium addiction ran through all classes of pre-Republic China, with the working class among the worst users. Occupational hazard, it seems, of a lifetime at brutish, unceasing toil. Upperclass Chinese indulged the habit, too, but it was treated as a really bad habit, and not much worse than alcoholism here would be.
Weird history. Cixi was the whackiest person, pre-Mao, ever to rule China. She sided with the Boxers during their Rebellion, and lost China forever for it. Still hated to this day for that and a whole mess of other stupid, foolish things she did.

--cruel and very unusual punishment. He's not been convicted yet, btw.
I know little about the case, but from the little I heard, there may be a serious evidence problem in that most of the damming evidence against him from the Israeli trials in the 80's is irrelevant now--as they could not establish he was at Treblinka --when he claimed all along he was at Sobibor. The problem has been finding witnesses from Sobibior--which was destroyed in an uprising in 1943.
I am not making any excuses or apologies for him. But, it's a hard thing to prove after all this time--which is why the Israeli court overturned his death sentence--lack of credible evidence. That was in the 1980's. What new evidence do they have 20 years later and more than 60 years after the fact?

It may not happen, but here's the scenario I envision. The Celtics limp past Orlando. And after 7 bruising games against the Magic, Boston plays Cleveland and loses the first two games on the road. Game 3 in Boston is a must win and the Celts are reeling. KG suits up and the Garden crowd goes nuts. He gives it a try and is able to play a little defense without having to move too much. Beyond that, I still need time to complete the script.

Most of it comes from ignorance, some indifference but a lot of anti-Bush feelings. Years ago, I was told that Reagan was evil, and I believed it a long time. There is no Republican party in Quebec politics. Very few conservatives.

Me: Do you stock that kind of fertilizer that's specially formulated for rhododendrons?
Clerk: That's not organic!
Me: Do you stock that kind of fertilizer that's specially formulated for rhododendrons?
Clerk: I wouldn't get that if I were you.
Me: Why not?
Clerk: It's not organic!
Me: But do you have it in stock?
Clerk: it's not recommended.
Me: Do you have it?
Clerk: Tell me why you think you need it.
Me: I just want it, that's all.
Clerk: Well, maybe the problem can be solved a different way.
Me: Do you have it or not?
Clerk: We have an organic all-purpose soil conditioner that many people think is great for all over the garden.
Me: Do you have it or not?
Clerk: Why don't you come in and we can explore possible strategies for your needs?
Me: [Click, hanging up phone in exasperation.]

I'm not going to defend Sykes or her bad jokes. However, what she said had a comedic context, because Rush Limbaugh WAS addicted to pills. It was not the same thing as just wishing someone gets breast cancer out of the blue.
Sure, it was mean, but that's what she does -- mean, low brow humor.

Extremely capable individual player. Took him a looooonnnng time to be a team leader - and only a so-so one at that. Kobe had the same problem with the Lakers, although he got his shit together (and Shaq out of the way) and learned from MJ's mistakes.

Shaq won a world Championship without Kobe..And I picked the Lakers to get upset the very first night of the playoffs..I don't think Kobe is going to win this year...

I haven't seen too many cheap recycled products, but this green business has to stop.
I went to the SAQ the other day (Quebec's liquor stores) and they didn't want to give me a bag. They don't give out bags any more.
THEY SELL BAGS for a dollar. And they're cute, with flowers on them. I ended up in another store, bought something else and took the bottle out of my friggin' pockets, put it in that bag. What the hell are they thinking? A thirty dollar bottle and you can't hand out bags?! JERKS!
All that because "plastic is bad". Aaargh.
I totally understand! Stores here still give out bags, but most are trying to sell reusable ones (with their logos on, of course.). Like I'm going to try to guess how many bags I'm going to need, then haul them to the store, and if they get dirty, wash them? Not bleepin' likely!

President Barack Obama fired the top U.S. general in Afghanistan on Monday, replacing him with a former special forces commander in a quest for a more agile, unconventional approach in a war that has gone quickly downhill. With the Taliban resurgent, Obama's switch from Gen. David McKiernan to Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal suggests the new commander in chief wants major changes in addition to the additional troops he's ordering into Afghanistan to shore up the war effort.

Johnny Most was an old perv. When I was interning at WBZ TV in Boston back in 1978, Johnny was doing morning sports on WBZ Radio during the summer. One day I introduced myself to him in the little vending machine room. Keep in mind, he was one of my idols. So he procedes to tell me he has a hobby. It was writing pornographic poetry. I swear this is a true story. I avoided him from that day forward. What a bummer that was :(

Wilt was before my time, and I can't really say much, except, maybe you can tell me. How many players in the NBA were over 7' tall in the 60's.
To this day I think his stunning height advantage (he was a foot taller than most players [I think] during that time) made a pretty sincere difference more than skill.
Teach me.
I actually think there were more traditionally tall centers then.

You have to look it up yourself, but Obama did the job on the Democrats.
On Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Mother's Day: "This is a tough holiday for Rahm. He's not used to saying the word 'day' after 'mother.'"
On his relationship with Hillary Clinton: "These days, we could not be closer. In fact, the minute she got back from Mexico, she pulled me into a hug and said I should go down there myself."
On the news media: "Most of you covered me. All of you voted for me. Apologies to the Fox table."
On his accomplishments: "Good evening, everybody, I would like to welcome you to the 10-day anniversary of my First 100 Days. During the second 100 days, we will design, build and open a library dedicated to my first 100 days. My next 100 days will be so successful, I will complete them in 72 days. And on the 73rd day, I will rest."
On his Teleprompter: "In the next hundred days, I will learn to go off prompter -- and Joe Biden will learn to stay on it."
On his new loyal friend: "He's warm, he's cuddly, loyal, enthusiastic; you just have to keep him in on a tight leash -- every once in a while he goes charging off and gets himself into trouble. Enough about Joe Biden."
On his daughters: "Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded. You can't just take Air Force One on a joy ride to Manhattan. I don't care whose kids you are."
No one mentioned that Sykes also took a shot at Sarah Palin and her daughter, Bristol, an unwed teen mother.
"Gov Palin is not here tonight. She pulled out at the last minute. Somebody should tell her that's not really how you practice abstinence."

But The Babe never played against Black athletes. Not his fault, but would his numbers be as good if he had?
These arguments are fun, but useless.
With the training, nutritional, medical, doping, psychological...keep adding to the list available, I don't think the superstar athlete of even 30 years ago would (if simply transported to today) even make a roster.
But, you can't prove an unprovable.

A short observation from an event I attended today - Dennis Miller did a live broadcast of his radio program from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library today which was very well attended (300-400 people at least) and very funny / entertaining even with the start of the program at o-dark hundred hours in Simi Valley, CA.
One of the things that Miller did was take questions during the program from the audience. Two of the questioners were clear and outright Paulbots - who asked questions on the Nirther kerfuffle and on Laup Nor's bill to solve all of the effing financial problems in the world - HR number whatever to audit the Fed Reserve.
Miller was classic in both cases, totally blowing off the issues as "tedious" and "boring" and not wasting his time with giving either of them any further attention. He clearly doesn't consider these fringe elements worth any time or attention by the real people.
The live broadcast is being repeated on KRLA 870am in LA from 6pm to 9pm Pacific time.

And before anyone lectures me about it, I know Limbaugh tried to spin it like crazy and say he wanted Obama's policies to fail.
It still sucked, and was a lousy thing to say.
“Look, what he's [Obama’s] talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don't want this to work. So I'm thinking of replying to the guy, ‘Okay, I'll send you a response, but I don't need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.’ (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here's the point. Everybody thinks it's outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, "Oh, you can't do that." Why not? Why is it any different, what's new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what's gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it?”
I've spent a fair amount of time finding/reviewing what Limbaugh actually said and this is what I could come up with. I can't agree what Limbaugh said was lousy or bad. Literally speaking, Limbaugh hopes Obama fails at specific things as stated above, not necessarily Obama fails at his presidency or that his presidency fails.

UN condemns Sri Lankan 'bloodbath'
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Volunteers dug mass graves in the marshes of Sri Lanka's northern war zone Monday as they buried hundreds of civilians killed in artillery attacks that the U.N. characterized as a "bloodbath."A doctor in the war zone said as many as 1,000 civilians may have been killed in two days of shelling that marked some of the worst violence in this Indian Ocean island nation since the civil war flared up again more than three years ago.
With the civilian death toll skyrocketing, the Tamil Tiger rebels and a coalition of international human rights groups separately called for the U.N. Security Council to urgently hold talks on the conflict. But with several nations protesting such talks, that seemed unlikely.
Just like Lebanon in 2006, don't call the cease-fire too soon.
When someone calls for the UN, you know they're hurting. I have nothing against the Tamils as such. Some very nice Tamils live near my home in Montreal.
I just don't care for keeping civilians captive in dangerous zones, 14 y/o kids forced to fight or suicide bombers against a mosque in southern Sri Lanka.
I like law and order. The Tigers don't seem to represent that to me.

i couldn't agree more.
why would rush say he wants o to fail, but for his socialist/commie policies? that's what he objects to. his policies, not the man himself.
if o was not pursuing such an agenda, rush would be supporting him.
