The NEW YORK TIMES just mentioned the Obama administration's plans on paying for health care.

I believe this is the first time this is mentioned, although we've all been expecting it.

WASHINGTON — Struggling to find ways to pay for the president’s signature health care overhaul, the administration on Monday proposed to raise nearly $60 billion more over 10 years mostly from tightening rules for inheritance taxes affecting the wealthiest estates.

Best of luck with that.

Oh, and could someone tell me what book has an intro by Glenn Beck? Charles mentioned this the other day and I can't find the reference now.

A sophisticated band of thieves managed to steal personal information and more than half a million dollars from hundreds of New York City bank customers by rigging ATMs in what police say is further evidence of the continued assault on personal data by identity thieves.

In one of the Wyatt Earp movies, Doc Holiday confronts one of the bad guy's who has the drop on Earp and is about to kill him. The bad guy asks, why are you taking this risk just for him?

Holiday answers, `he's my friend.'

Bad guy: `So what. I got lots of friends.'

Holiday: `I don't.'

More class warfare. The estate tax is very unpopular and un-American, but Obama will be able to sell expanding it. I expect to see the gift tax raised eventually, since many retirees use it to escape the death tax.

And that book was probably The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen.

Clerk: it's not recommended.

Me: Do you have it?

Clerk: Tell me why you think you need it.

Me: I just want it, that's all.

Clerk: Well, maybe the problem can be solved a different way.

Me: Do you have it or not?

Clerk: We have an organic all-purpose soil conditioner that many people think is great for all over the garden.

Me: Do you have it or not?

Clerk: Why don't you come in and we can explore possible strategies for your needs?

Thing about the Coens - they're freakin' geniuses.

Think about it - Raising Arizona, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Barton Fink, Fargo, Miller's Crossing, etc. etc.

Freakin' geniuses. Even their dark stuff is funny as hell, if you're a little bit twisted.

Miller's Crossing:

Michael: "She speaks highly of you."

You have my deepest condolences on the pagan thing. I hate that crap so much - real pagans were dignified, even if they were flawed. New Age neo-Pagans are just D&D taken too far.

Interesting that you mention D&D. The groom apparently still does live D&D stuff in the woods with foam swords. There's a lot of growing up to do for both of them.

re: #54 Kosh's Shadow

I recently saw a truck that said something like "Joe's Organics".
I felt like asking the driver if he had some benzene.

Every time I'm tempted to buy any "organically grown" food, I remind myself of a line from John Ringo's The Last Centurion, in which the narrator, Bandit Six, who grew up on a commercial farm in Minnesota, points out that "organic fertilizer", in the commercial food context, means "at some point this stuff was sprayed with liquefied s#!t".

At that point, my stomach gives a warning lurch, and I settle for the chemical-filled, evil, but just as nutritious and much cheaper stuff grown by more modern methods.

/I grew up on a (small) farm, and we used chemical fertilizers, weed and insect sprays, and the whole nine yards. I ate what we grew. Last time I looked, I was still alive.

cheers

One of the interesting things we found, pesticide residue by the time they got to the store were extremely low. The other was that organic potatoes with out the protection of pesticide increase the manufacture of their own defensive chemicals, some of which are carcinogenic to higher levels.

In dealing with "organic" types, I've often found that the ones who believe that even those barely-detectable amounts of chemicals can kill you are also likely to believe in the efficacy of "homeopathic medicine", i.e. "tinctures" of various "natural" chemicals diluted in water until they are almost below the detection threshold on a gas chromatograph. IMHO, there is a great deal of self-deception, or outright delusion, in the "organic" movement.

Under normal circumstances, I would agree. These aren't normal circumstances, believe me. :)

The public official who witnessed my marriage was later indicted for corruption and bribe-taking, and he was obviously snookered when he executed our marriage (a civil ceremony).

It might work, after all, although I've been to a few weddings where I thought the bride and the groom both should be warned off, kidnapped, or enjoined by a court of law to prevent it happening.

All we can do is hope and pray.

A bizarre consequence of the appearance of oxygen was the advent the world's first nuclear reactors. Nuclear power from its inception has rarely been described publicly except in hyperbole. The impression has been given that to design and construct a nuclear reactor is a feat unique to physical science and engineering creativity. It is chastening to find that, in the Proterozoic, an unassertive community of modest bacteria built a set of nuclear reactors that ran for millions of years.

More dangerous than asbestos. I wonder how many people have burned to death in the years since asbestos was outlawed vs. the number who have died over time from mesolethimioma.

The non-asbestos fire proofing in WTC played a minor role in the collapse. The non-asbestos coating was more easily dislodged than the asbestos based.

However given the conditions the difference would have been a few minutes at the most.

I haven't seen Raising Arizona yet, but I recommend The Big Lebowski. Coen brothers are awsome. Fargo is also good, but slow. Barton Fink is extra-slow, so don't watch that if you're in the mood for Mad Max.

again, my hopes and prayers for the correct outcome, whatever it may be.

Zen story of a farmer and wild horses:

A farmer had a horse but one day, the horse ran away and so the farmer and his son had to plow their fields themselves. Their neighbors said, “Oh, what bad luck that your horse ran away!” But the farmer replied, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

The next week, the horse returned to the farm, bringing a herd of wild horses with him. “What wonderful luck!” cried the neighbors, but the farmer responded, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

Then, the farmer’s son was thrown as he tried to ride one of the wild horses, and he broke his leg. “Ah, such bad luck,” sympathized the neighbors. Once again, the farmer responded, “Bad luck, good luck, who knows?”

A short time later, the ruler of the country recruited all young men to join his army for battle. The son, with his broken leg, was left at home. “What good luck that your son was not forced into battle!” celebrated the neighbors. And the farmer remarked, “Good luck, bad luck, who knows?”

American Spirit. Fastest growing tobacco brand in the country. They're additive free cigarettes, but they also have an organic variety. I recommend them to folks trying to quit, to switch to this brand to get off of all the other chemicals the other companies put in their tobacco. It's a gross list of chemicals and other weeds in the major brand names' products. As if smoking wasn't bad enough. I would link to them, but I don't think that's appropriate.

Thanks to the Europeans, the drug of choice in China in the old days was opium.

Yes, and that was a hard one to kick. They STILL have an opium problem there. Cultural factors play a huge role, to be sure.

Funny thing about opium-smoking, though. It wasn't the habit per se that pissed off the government, it was the fact that the trade was monopolized by foreigners. From what I've read from pre-Republic China's history and way of life, the opium addicts were largely functional, and it was, in fact, viewed as a nasty, stupid habit, but not as some sort of horrible vice or "the ruin" of anyone except those who let themselves be ruined by it. Opium addiction ran through all classes of pre-Republic China, with the working class among the worst users. Occupational hazard, it seems, of a lifetime at brutish, unceasing toil. Upperclass Chinese indulged the habit, too, but it was treated as a really bad habit, and not much worse than alcoholism here would be.

Weird history. Cixi was the whackiest person, pre-Mao, ever to rule China. She sided with the Boxers during their Rebellion, and lost China forever for it. Still hated to this day for that and a whole mess of other stupid, foolish things she did.

I haven't seen too many cheap recycled products, but this green business has to stop.

I went to the SAQ the other day (Quebec's liquor stores) and they didn't want to give me a bag. They don't give out bags any more.

THEY SELL BAGS for a dollar. And they're cute, with flowers on them. I ended up in another store, bought something else and took the bottle out of my friggin' pockets, put it in that bag. What the hell are they thinking? A thirty dollar bottle and you can't hand out bags?! JERKS!

I know little about the case, but from the little I heard, there may be a serious evidence problem in that most of the damming evidence against him from the Israeli trials in the 80's is irrelevant now--as they could not establish he was at Treblinka --when he claimed all along he was at Sobibor. The problem has been finding witnesses from Sobibior--which was destroyed in an uprising in 1943.

I am not making any excuses or apologies for him. But, it's a hard thing to prove after all this time--which is why the Israeli court overturned his death sentence--lack of credible evidence. That was in the 1980's. What new evidence do they have 20 years later and more than 60 years after the fact?

MJ was a skilled athletic player on a team of average ability. They caught the NBA in major re-building roles with LA, Boston, SA, Portland, Philly all retooling. Greatest of all time? Nah. Certainly not better than Magic or Bird because of how they made their teams better.

It may not happen, but here's the scenario I envision. The Celtics limp past Orlando. And after 7 bruising games against the Magic, Boston plays Cleveland and loses the first two games on the road. Game 3 in Boston is a must win and the Celts are reeling. KG suits up and the Garden crowd goes nuts. He gives it a try and is able to play a little defense without having to move too much. Beyond that, I still need time to complete the script.

I'm glad to hear you say that. Thanks. Er... You guys do know that Quebec was revealed to be the most anti-american province in Canada, right? The Reader's Digest did a poll.

Most of it comes from ignorance, some indifference but a lot of anti-Bush feelings. Years ago, I was told that Reagan was evil, and I believed it a long time. There is no Republican party in Quebec politics. Very few conservatives.

You must understand and take pity. What you see here is a pathetic attempt by one small person to somehow control his fate while desperately denying reality. Why else would he chase off a potential paying customer in these difficult economic times?

It's so comforting to believe you can save the world simply by purchasing organic fertilizer. It's so much scarier to contemplate harsh realities like the astronomical national debt and 13th century barbarians about to get their hands on nukes.

Example from earlier today:

I called a local gardening supply store to ask if they had that special kind of fertilizer specially formulated for rhododendrons. The store was in ______ [pretentious Bay Area lefty neighborhood.] The conversation went like this:

Me: Do you stock that kind of fertilizer that's specially formulated for rhododendrons?

Clerk: That's not organic!

Me: Do you stock that kind of fertilizer that's specially formulated for rhododendrons?

Clerk: I wouldn't get that if I were you.

Me: Why not?

Clerk: It's not organic!

Me: But do you have it in stock?

Clerk: it's not recommended.

Me: Do you have it?

Clerk: Tell me why you think you need it.

Me: I just want it, that's all.

Clerk: Well, maybe the problem can be solved a different way.

Me: Do you have it or not?

Clerk: We have an organic all-purpose soil conditioner that many people think is great for all over the garden.

Me: Do you have it or not?

Clerk: Why don't you come in and we can explore possible strategies for your needs?

Me: [Click, hanging up phone in exasperation.]

JERKS!

All that because "plastic is bad". Aaargh.

I totally understand! Stores here still give out bags, but most are trying to sell reusable ones (with their logos on, of course.). Like I'm going to try to guess how many bags I'm going to need, then haul them to the store, and if they get dirty, wash them? Not bleepin' likely!

Breaking: US fires top general in Afghanistan as war worsens

President Barack Obama fired the top U.S. general in Afghanistan on Monday, replacing him with a former special forces commander in a quest for a more agile, unconventional approach in a war that has gone quickly downhill. With the Taliban resurgent, Obama's switch from Gen. David McKiernan to Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal suggests the new commander in chief wants major changes in addition to the additional troops he's ordering into Afghanistan to shore up the war effort.

You have to look it up yourself, but Obama did the job on the Democrats.

On Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Mother's Day: "This is a tough holiday for Rahm. He's not used to saying the word 'day' after 'mother.'"

On his relationship with Hillary Clinton: "These days, we could not be closer. In fact, the minute she got back from Mexico, she pulled me into a hug and said I should go down there myself."

On the news media: "Most of you covered me. All of you voted for me. Apologies to the Fox table."

On his accomplishments: "Good evening, everybody, I would like to welcome you to the 10-day anniversary of my First 100 Days. During the second 100 days, we will design, build and open a library dedicated to my first 100 days. My next 100 days will be so successful, I will complete them in 72 days. And on the 73rd day, I will rest."

On his Teleprompter: "In the next hundred days, I will learn to go off prompter -- and Joe Biden will learn to stay on it."

On his new loyal friend: "He's warm, he's cuddly, loyal, enthusiastic; you just have to keep him in on a tight leash -- every once in a while he goes charging off and gets himself into trouble. Enough about Joe Biden."

On his daughters: "Sasha and Malia aren't here tonight because they're grounded. You can't just take Air Force One on a joy ride to Manhattan. I don't care whose kids you are."

No one mentioned that Sykes also took a shot at Sarah Palin and her daughter, Bristol, an unwed teen mother.

All bags, plastic or paper $.25 each

$.20 goes to the State

No returns accepted as is the case with most bottle bills.

Gates said he asked for McKiernan's resignation "with the approval of the president." The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, and McKiernan's military boss, Gen. David Petraeus, both said they supported the switch.

The White House said the recommended change came from the Pentagon.

"Gov Palin is not here tonight. She pulled out at the last minute. Somebody should tell her that's not really how you practice abstinence."

That's some stupid ass shit.

Obscure? I'm not smart enough for that. I go for the low-hanging fruit for MY bad jokes.

A short observation from an event I attended today - Dennis Miller did a live broadcast of his radio program from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library today which was very well attended (300-400 people at least) and very funny / entertaining even with the start of the program at o-dark hundred hours in Simi Valley, CA.

One of the things that Miller did was take questions during the program from the audience. Two of the questioners were clear and outright Paulbots - who asked questions on the Nirther kerfuffle and on Laup Nor's bill to solve all of the effing financial problems in the world - HR number whatever to audit the Fed Reserve.

Miller was classic in both cases, totally blowing off the issues as "tedious" and "boring" and not wasting his time with giving either of them any further attention. He clearly doesn't consider these fringe elements worth any time or attention by the real people.

The live broadcast is being repeated on KRLA 870am in LA from 6pm to 9pm Pacific time.

Nate "TINY" Archibald was bigger than any Bruin ,,, yet he WAS "tiny' in basketball terms!

I always had a problem with that moniker. I'd think, hey he is about my size! Nobody calls me tiny!

Well for the luckier, any reference to scientology is obscure. For me, I learned my lesson going to LA for a week of brainwashing back in 1989. Only cost 6500 bucks. What a rip off.

Greensboro Airport (several years ago) Tim Duncan waiting on a car with (assuming) his wife. Bunch of kids came up to him for autographs, Tim had been sitting on the curb...stood up (so he could give them the "damn you're tall" show) chatted with about 6 kids (and the others who the kids gave courage to approach) for ten minutes. When I left (my car came before his) he was very comfortably chatting away with them.

I love Tim Duncan for that very reason.

re: #419 Charles

And before anyone lectures me about it, I know Limbaugh tried to spin it like crazy and say he wanted Obama's policies to fail.

It still sucked, and was a lousy thing to say.

“Look, what he's [Obama’s] talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don't want this to work. So I'm thinking of replying to the guy, ‘Okay, I'll send you a response, but I don't need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.’ (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here's the point. Everybody thinks it's outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, "Oh, you can't do that." Why not? Why is it any different, what's new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what's gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it?”

I've spent a fair amount of time finding/reviewing what Limbaugh actually said and this is what I could come up with. I can't agree what Limbaugh said was lousy or bad. Literally speaking, Limbaugh hopes Obama fails at specific things as stated above, not necessarily Obama fails at his presidency or that his presidency fails.

UN condemns Sri Lankan 'bloodbath'

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Volunteers dug mass graves in the marshes of Sri Lanka's northern war zone Monday as they buried hundreds of civilians killed in artillery attacks that the U.N. characterized as a "bloodbath."

A doctor in the war zone said as many as 1,000 civilians may have been killed in two days of shelling that marked some of the worst violence in this Indian Ocean island nation since the civil war flared up again more than three years ago.

With the civilian death toll skyrocketing, the Tamil Tiger rebels and a coalition of international human rights groups separately called for the U.N. Security Council to urgently hold talks on the conflict. But with several nations protesting such talks, that seemed unlikely.

Just like Lebanon in 2006, don't call the cease-fire too soon.

When someone calls for the UN, you know they're hurting. I have nothing against the Tamils as such. Some very nice Tamils live near my home in Montreal.

I just don't care for keeping civilians captive in dangerous zones, 14 y/o kids forced to fight or suicide bombers against a mosque in southern Sri Lanka.

I like law and order. The Tigers don't seem to represent that to me.

i couldn't agree more.
why would rush say he wants o to fail, but for his socialist/commie policies? that's what he objects to. his policies, not the man himself.
if o was not pursuing such an agenda, rush would be supporting him.
