This is something I posted on the last thread, but I think it got ignored by the B-ball discussion going on :) It is no big thing, but yet I'm curious about it:

Hi guys. Doing some spring cleaning here. I came across a Nine Inch Nails cassete of their first album "Pretty Hate Machine". I once heard that there is a backstory to this cassete. Apparently, all the B-Side tracks "kinda I want to' 'sin' 'that's what I get' 'the only time' and 'ringfinger' are actaully playable only on the A side of the cassette. I guess this was some type of joke by Trent Reznor. I have heard that this is worth some money. Anybody know anything about this? If it is actaully true or not? thanks

And now one of the main sponsors of the "tea party" protests:

The American Family Association.

This group promotes creationism, the censorship of print and electronic media to make it more in line with "Biblical truth," and criminalizing homosexuality.

This pissed me off: crack journalist Christiane Amanpour calls falsely imprisoned journalist Roxana Saberi an "irritant" to Barack Obama's "process of dialogue" with Iran.

[Link: www.cnn.com...]

She also spends the entire article defending the Iranians and suggests that Ahmadinejad was her saviour. And she says Saberi's 4 months in jail was "a slap on the wrist". The whole article is disgusting even for CNN.

Speaking of tea, I'm sipping my last tea-bag worth of Chai tea.

The next to the last tea bag, I wore to the White House/Lafayette Square tea party.

I sponsored myself and went with a nice person who works for our country on defense issues.

Too bad Roxane Saberi isn't as famous as Amanpour the tv whore, and doesn't have as big and brassy a megaphone. Ms. Saberi could tear Ms. Amanpour a whole new hole.

Saberi isn't the only American held by the Iranian mad mullahs on trumped up charges, and for CNN to push that nonsense reminds me of what Eason Jordan did with Iraq back in the day. They would regularly slant their coverage so as to retain access.

I expect that we'll find out eventually that CNN was pulling its punches so as to retain access to Tehran and the mad mullahs.

Rep. Pete Sessions accuses Obama of deliberately driving stock market down

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions of Dallas, a member of the House Republican leadership, is accusing President Barack Obama of intentionally driving up unemployment and dampening stock prices in a bid to consolidate power.

Sessions told The New York Times that the administration intends to “diminish employment and diminish stock prices” as part of a “divide and conquer” strategy.

And he asserted that the Obama agenda is “intended to inflict damage and hardship on the free enterprise system, if not to kill it.”...

0bama has learned well from Alinsky.

What is also interesting is seeing how WND's sphere of influence is spreading... I see now they have Roger Hedgecock as one of their commentators. Used to listen to Hedgecock when he started his show (after ignominiously leaving the mayorship of SD), and always thought Hedgecock was mainstream Republican (e.g., substituting for Limbaugh.)

Since Hedgecock has been sucked into the WND universe... maybe that is a sign that the GOP truly is being Paulified?

It seems that some are so focused on their message or advocacy that they'll align themselves with concurrent or unrelated issues or groups with an uncritical eye. The problems with that are obvious.

Which begs the question: if your position or issue is so important, why are you so careless to as to not challenge any group or concurrent issue that may devalue your issue or advocacy?

Methinks it's not about the issue at all, but oneself.

I really don't know. When "Pretty Hate Machine" came out it was already a CD world. If you bought a tape it was because you had a tape deck in the car and did NOT have sufficient access to friends with CDs. I expect that most tape purchases were of Aerosmith and Guns N Roses, by truck drivers, and not of NIN. So I have no idea why Reznor would have throught it would be fun to do his funny business on tape.

I had a phase then of evangelising the purchase of Jesus & Mary Chain tapes in these States; the Reid brothers seemed to "get" America in a way that even most American rock bands don't - very much including NIN.

"The Prophet compared musical instruments to things that are definitely known to be haraam, namely zina and alcohol. If instruments were not haraam, he would not have made this comparison. The evidence of this hadeeth that singing is haram is definitive. Even if no other hadeeth or aayah spoke about musical instruments, this hadeeth would be sufficient to prove that they are haraam, especially the kind of singing and music that is known among people nowadays, the essence of which is obscenity and foul talk, based on all kinds of musical instruments such as guitars, drums, flutes, ouds, zithers, organs, pianos, violins and other things that make it more enticing, such as the voices of these effeminate singers and whores." (Article found on the internet).

Argument #3: Some Muslims state the following about this hadith:

That would be this hadith -

Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v:

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."
.

Since it's Bukhari, it's binding on all Hanbali Sunni, a madhhab that incorporates the Wahhabis and the Muslim Brotherhood. I'd expect that the Shafi'i view it as binding as well. I'll have to look into the isnad.

I can already tell from its content that it is a saying from the apocalyptic tradition in Islam. That's not as common in Bukhari as it is in Abu Dawud, not to mention the early books of Ibn Abi Shayba and Nu'aym bin Hammad. So clearly Muslims have to take that one seriously...

I don't expect you to trust me personally, I don't know you from a hole in the wall, but do you really believe that all of the longtime LGF'ers who attended these Tea Parties were duped? Or are somehow conspiring to deceive you?
If the TP's were what you seem to think they are, do you really think that the people that have stayed at your site for years and years would still be here?
I saw reasonable people discussing important issues in a public settting. That is all. Unless scxhool vouchers are the new hot-button issue for Nazi's, then I think the TP's are pretty much a real life analog for the discussions that happen right here.

However,...
Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hanuti stated: "The Hadith referred to in saying that it is haram as narrated by al Bukhari is not fulfilling the requirements of the Sahih in al Bukhari's collection. 1) Al Bukhari in Hadith al Ma'azif himself narrated the Hadith to be of a broken chain of narrators in which there is a gap between al Bukhari and the second narrator, so he drops the first narrator in his chain. That is called Mu'allaq. Some scholars tried to connect the chain through other means like whan ibn Hajar did in his dissertation (connecting what is disconnected) in which he connected the Isnad of this Hadith. But still, one of the main narrators whose name is Hisham ibn Ammar as profiled in Tahthib at-Tahthib by ibn Hajar is not reliable enough for some scholars to be a source of a narration that depends on somebody like him. 2) Even when we said the Hadith is Sahih, there are questions that would emerge when we study the version of the Hadith when it says, "People will make adultery, pure silk, liquor and Ma'azif into Halal." We know that adultery is Haram by another proof and it is a unanimous Hukum. Pure silk is not of consensus Hukum. If a Muslim says Zina is Halal deliberately, then they are considered a kafir. However, if a Muslim says pure silk is not Haram, he is not a kafir. We know that liquor is Haram as it is in the Qur'an, but where do we find an authentic hadith or Qur'an to tell us that Ma'azif are Haram other than this source. The last point is to get the clear meaning of Ma'azif in arabic dictionaries because there are more than one meaning for Ma'azif. It is acceptable for a Muslim to hear somebody says Makruh but not Haram because Haram is in need of clear-cut meaning and certain narration."

I wonder if the word "Hokum" has an Arabic origination.

UCI Muslim Student Union Event Draws Ire of Local Jews

As this promotional video shows, UC Irvine's Muslim Student Union is at it again, presenting 18 days of events this month under the banner "Israel: the Politics of Genocide."

Among those coming to the campus through May 21 are: George Galloway, the British member of Parliament who speaks against the occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine; Cynthia McKinney, the former Georgia congresswoman and 2008 Green Party presidential nominee who is part of the Free Gaza Movement; Anna Baltzer, the Jewish American graduate of Columbia University who went to Israel and had her eyes opened about the oppression against Palestinians there; Amir Abdel Malik Ali, a black Imam from Oakland frequently condemned by Jews for allegedly engaging in hate speech; and Gideon Levy, the Israeli Ha'aretz journalist and former Shimon Peres spokesman who has accused his nation of "moral blindness" for its acts of war and occupations of Gaza and the West Bank.

Co-sponsors include Afrikan Student Union, the Armenian fraternity Alpha Epsilon Omega, Armenian Student Association, Asian Pacific Student Association, Hindu Student Council, Hip Hop Congress, Pakistani Student Association, Society of Arab Students, Sikh Student Association, The Agora, Radical Student Union, Vietnamese Action Committee, Young Americans for Liberty and Workers Student Alliance.

re: #142 Thanos

Like it did Sheriff Joe

[Link: noblesseoblige.org...]

There are two sides to Sheriff Joe. He is a quite popular with the electorate here in Maricopa county, regardless of party affiliation because he is really, really, really hard on crime. He locks you up if you break the law. The Maricopa County Sheriff's office is basically a jail system. He runs deputies to enforce laws, but he is primarily a jailer. All of the municipalities in the county utilize his jail system. If you get a DUI anywhere in the county, you go to Tent City. If you are awaiting trial, you are in one of his jails. If you get sentenced for a short time, chances are you go to one of his jails. That part of Sheriff Joe is great. No more releases, no more criminals let loose on society because there is no room.

The bad side to Sheriff Joe is he is a media whore and a bit of a Prima Donna. He has a very bad relationship with most of the chief's of police in the county. He gets along well with the current DA because they both love to throw the book at people, but he tangled with his predecessor many times. He also has problems with inter-jurisdictional matters. He steps on toes. I live in a city called Mesa. It is a large suburb (over 300,000 people). There is a section in town that is predominately Hispanic( read Mexican). It is here that he concentrates his illegal immigration "suppression" activities. Basically round up anyone that looks "Mexican" unless they can "prove" they are Americans. That got him in a battle with the Mesa Chief of Police (a Hispanic). So, Sheriff Joe decided to crack down on the cleaning company that the City of Mesa employs to clean City Hall and the Court Complex. He raided City Hall! He arrested 150 illegal aliens and sent them to Tent City. He has also concentrated on rounding up "day workers" that hang out at the local Home Depots. This is why he is being targeted by the feds.

He is a tough guy and I am not so sure he is a nazi loving extremist, but I can tell you he does not mess around. If it was up to him, he would round up every criminal in the county.

I voted for him the first few times. This last election, I did not. But, until he retires, he is not going anywhere. He has a 90% positive rating. Crime has fallen since he took over.

I just searched through my spam folder for the "AFA Action Alerts". Here are some quotes.

First PP of one of their alert e-mails

Senate poised to give special protection status to pedophiles
Your calls are needed today!
May 6, 2009
Dear Friend,
The U.S. Senate is set to give legally protected status to pedophiles and 30 other sexual orientations. The Senate refused to define what is meant by sexual orientation in S. 909, the "Hate Crimes" bill. This means that the 30 different sexual orientations will be federally protected classes.
To see the orientations that will be protected by the Hate Crimes bill (S. 909), click here.
The House has already passed this bill, and the Senate will vote as early as Wednesday. Pres. Obama has said he would sign the bill.

And another one from the "Queers are going to eat our children" category:

Please help us get this information into the hands of as many people as possible by forwarding it to your entire e-mail list of family and friends.
PepsiCo sponsors the 2009 New York City Gay Pride Parade
May 7, 2009
Dear Friend,
Desiring to take a high visibility position in the promotion of the homosexual agenda, including same-sex marriage, PepsiCo has agreed to sponsor the New York Gay Pride Parade June 27. AFA has asked PepsiCo to be neutral in the culture war regarding the homosexual agenda and the legalization of homosexual marriage, but PepsiCo has adamantly refused to do so.
PepsiCo has given homosexual groups more than a million dollars in the last two years. It has refused to give one penny to organizations such as Parents and Friends of Ex-Gay and Gays (PFOX) that work to help individuals change their sexual behavior.
Click here to see the kind of parade PepsiCo is sponsoring.
In addition to sponsoring the New York Gay Pride Parade, PepsiCo’s shareholders recently voted down a shareholder proposal seeking to make public how much money Pepsi is giving to homosexual groups. However, the proposal did gain 5% of the vote, surpassing the 3% needed to bring the resolution up again next year. All total, 75 million individual shares voted to make Pepsi justify their donations to activist homosexual groups.

Here are some e-mail titles from some kind of newsletter (which I didn't know I was getting, it was going straight into spam):

"Obama urged to appoint first 'gay' to Supreme Court"
"Calif. school day would honor homosexual pioneer"
"U.S. military destroys soldier's Bibles"

But the mail titles don't refer to articles in the newsletter, they're just hooks to get you to read and vote in some sort of poll. And at the bottom of these newsletter mails are a request to "help AFA build a homeschooling channel" (!)

There are a lot more of these mails in my spam folder than there used to be.

Talk of lettering the banks fail is nonsense as is the Fair Tax and ending the Federal Reserve and going back to the gold standard. Obama is taxing the fuck out of businesses and the wealthy. Unfortunately the Tea Party policy has somehow managed to be even more disastrous than Obama. It's quite a feat if you think about it.

Even if you are right, Linc, a good case can be made that the event names have been taken over by nutcases. Before we can fully embrace these Tea Parties, we must purge most of the nuts from them. We need to use an event with that name to showcase top GOP talent, and we need that event to criticize Ron Paul by name. re: #228 Lincolntf

Talking about "purges" is not comfortable for me. And calling out Ron Paul when nobody at the event knows who the hell he is seems counter-productive.
Besides, a Paulian doesn't deeply offend me. A "Nazi" does. I'll deal with each in entirely different ways.
I'm not looking for ideological purity at these things, just an interest in getting shit right.

I'm not looking for purity either, but we've got a lot of crazies in our party right now and we need to remove some of them publicly. Otherwise, they'll taint any large-scale event we hold and that will make it hard to mount any sort of recovery in 2010. I don't like purges, but in this case one is necessary.

re: #120 NelsFreeSorry for my delay.

Here is the isnad I promised: Bukhari got it from Hisham b 'Ammar < Sadiqa b Khalid < 'Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid b. Jabir < 'Atiyya b. Qays al-Kilabi < Abd al-Rahman b. Ghanm al-Ash'ari < Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik al-Ash'ari.

It is in a chapter heading, and is not one of the "real" ahadith in Bukhari. That is why the translator enumerated it "494v" instead of just "494". Also the "it could be 'Amir or it could be Malik, I dunno" at the base of the chain is not inspiring me with great confidence. But that may be Bukhari's aim here.

I am taking their word for this. Also possible that Bukhari, who as I mentioned is not a fan of apocalyptic, deliberately suppressed some of the narrators.

Yeah, a "Hisham ibn Ammar" is indeed in that chain. I don't know enough about him.

2) Even when we said the Hadith is Sahih ed: this means "authentic", there are questions that would emerge when we study the version of the Hadith when it says, "People will make adultery, pure silk, liquor and Ma'azif into Halal." We know that adultery is Haram by another proof and it is a unanimous Hukum.

"Hukm" is "wisdom" and further has the connotation the Ten Commandments would have in Judaism. Q. 17:22-39 with its parallel to Q. 6:151-3 are called "hukm" and they are very like to the Commandments.

(It's actually Latin from the word "hoc"... it was peasants mocking the Latin Mass that gave us "hocus dominocus". But that is even further off topic)

I'm sure we fundamentally agree, but the reason that we're discussing the TP's in this context is the drivel that has been attached to the "movement" (I hate that word and will accept any substitute offered).
The fact that otherwise reasonable people are now sounding like Janeane Garofalo (sp?) in regards to the TP's points out that some defense of reality is necessary.
I'm no Crusader, and if people choose to use the TP's to bolster some fictional conspiracy theory it doesn't really bother me. I just want to make sure that the real people discussing real issues in their real hometowns are not drowned out by the silly Web-spats that pass for intelligent discussion these days.

They'll take a issue, twist it, and lie about to it to raise money for the other idiot leftists. This week it's the forcing gay marriage down everyone's throat (no pun intended). No matter how you feel about the current laws it THEY DO NOT discriminate against Gay people even though they claim it does to raise money.

You're entitled to your opinion, but a great number of us feel that the current laws DO discriminate against gay people. A very different matter, from claiming a falsehood (hate crime law protects pedophiles) is true, in an actual fundraising appeal.

[Link: blogs.ocweekly.com...]

This blog describes what will be going on at the event, with the UCI Muslim Union (who's been involved in MULTIPLE racism/hate speech controversies before. 18 Days for a festival entitled "Israel: The Politics of Genocide"?! Really?

You are helping co-sponsor an event that openly practices racism and hatred? Really?

You are helping co-sponsor an event that is inviting such people like George Galloway and Cynthia McKinney?

DO YOU KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE EVEN ARE?!

Here are some links about Cynthia McKinney, in case you have no idea who she is:

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

The above link has two links embedded with further detail about McKinney and her fascist associations. Look at the fucking titles of the some previous episodes of the radio show she appeared on.

As if that wasn't bad enough, here are some more links about her.

-- Here she is talking about how she thinks the government executed 5,000 prisoners and dumped their bodies in a Louisiana swamp, during Hurricane Katrina.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] -- Here is a video of her supporters spewing openly racist and anti-semitic garbage after she lost her election in 2006.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...] -- Here's a link of her and her lawyer's comments after she punched a cop.....again, blatantly racist garbage!

As for George Galloway, one of the members of Parliament in England, well, here's a link showing DOZENS of stories about him tied to terrorists, racism, anti-semitism, propaganda, etc. And don't get lazy, you can even read some of the headlines and few bits of texts and you can get the point.

Here are some links about Amir Abdul Malik Ali. This string of search results regarding this vile person frequently ties him to UCI. One of the links entitled "Video: UCI MSU Antisemitism Revealed" involves a video of Ali making such ridiculous and putrid claims like the Mossad being behind 9/11, etc

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

Need I go on? I cannot believe ANYONE would support these pieces of TRASH being on the campus of a major US university, let alone hosting a large event spewing vile garbage, LET ALONE having Armenian fraternity Alpha Epsilon Omega and the Armenian Students Association involved as well.

This is some of the most disturbing, disgusting news I have ever heard.

I IMPLORE members of Alpha Epsilon Omega and Armenian Students Association to withdraw their sponsoring of this horrible event.

I was using Avanti's own words to describe some of the people on his side of the aisle. It was an attempt at humor, not a declaration of my "flaming homophobia" (pun intended). I am actually quite moderate in this area. I do not want to see anyone discriminated against. I am in favor of granting a civil union status that would basically equal what a marriage does for a man and woman. I have a gay relatives and friends and I love them just as much as the "straight" ones. The fact that society still attaches a stigma or displays an intolerance towards this group is unfortunate.

I do get upset when radicals attempt to hijack an issue and force society to accept whatever they deem proper. But, I feel tolerance for homosexuals is growing and it is just a matter of time before society accepts them for who and what they are. I already do.

Another point: It is, as I expected it would be, in Abu Dawud. (#3521.) Common source: 'Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid b. Jabir. Therefore the people complaining about Hisham b. 'Ammar don't have a leg to stand on; as forgeries go, it is an early one, no later than 154 AH - early 'Abbasids. It's a Syrian tradition and I continue to suspect it may be in Nu'aym b. Hammad as well.

From the above, if I were a Muslim imam, I would allow music except where it encouraged the anti-hukm sins like zina (adultery). That's a lot of booty rap which would not be welcome in my mosque.

But to take a Syrian apocalyptic tradition as a ban on ALL music seems like a few too many degrees of separation to me. I think the Wahhabis are going out on a limb if they are using something which even Bukhari didn't like.

I played old guy hockey with a fellow (Euro) who had no use for basketball, not enough contact. He had an idea for innovative rules for that sport too. "Just put them in pads Shadow, no fouls except for maybe holding."

He might of had somethin there!

Hello!

Mexico hasn't been paying attention:

Most schools open, even though 24,000 haven't been properly cleaned.

68,000 teachers didn't attend sanitization classes.

Masks and gloves have been tossed in open dumpsters, when they should have been burned.

So tell them what they've won, Johnny!

Mexico, you could be starring in the upcoming sequel, Swine Flu II: Electric Boogaloo!

Hello!

Mexico hasn't been paying attention:

The Mexican government is known for not paying attention, to nearly bloody anything. That is why their country has gone in circles since Santa Anna while our country has become a world power.

But yes, swine flu is now running amok in the US too. We're coming up to a summer, which is not primetime for flu. But when winter comes around again - I don't like to think about it.

I am concerned that Scotty jumped ship to the Hawks to join his son. Nothing but respect around here for what he means to an organization.

Scotty will be a huge help for the Hawks in getting ready for Detroit (not counting my chickens before they hatch though). Wings-Hawks will be a dream matchup, let's hope it happens.

The good news is that by next fall we'll have a vaccine and more anti-virals ready. Swine flu is now much less likely to be The Pandemic. It telegraphed its punch, and now we have time to prepare.

Even the stalwart promoters of the "D" have to admit Chicago's preeminence as a great city, but they relish the opportunity to spank them on the field (we'll claim hockey and baseball, you definitely own football, and basketball is interesting: the Pistons kicked Jordan around better than anyone before the Bulls took off and became truly great). Cubs baseball is hugely popular in Detroit. People regularly make pilgrimages to Wrigley. As for the Sox, well they have had mixed success over the years, and they definitely own the Tigers of late. Overall Tigers history is pretty strong, going back a lot of years from Ty Cobb to Series wins in I believe '35, '45, '68, and '84. Both are phenomenal baseball towns.

I went to one with 7,000 people and it was the most respectful, but passionate group of Americans you could find anywhere. Also, the demographic was decidedly very middle-class, middle-American, lots of women, kids, and surprisingly large number of African-Americans. A black minister gave an amazing invocation. I never heard of this. (I never had any issues with the cassette). But I do know that Trent Reznor has a track record of trying lots of different things with to make his albums more unique. For example, the "Broken" disc originally had two CD's one regular CD and and additional CD-single sized disc with two additional songs on it. Now that album is only one CD with the additional two songs separate from the main body of songs by a long silence. Recently, he's been playing around with lots of socially interactive games to correspond with releases and his tour (Wired Article). I don't really like much of his stuff now, but I find the ways that he tries to make his tour and music more interactive with the free songs and games fascinating.

I did as well. I think the infernal Human Events give it's e-mail list to them. I've tried numerous times unsuccessfully to un-subscribe--to no avail.

Apropos de nada, something jarred my memory of this interesting sentence:

In spite of the Esperanto pushers, the English language has become the language of international commerce. In spite of a number of anomalies.

For instance, SAS, the Scandinavian airline, uses English rather than Swedish or Norwegian as their common language. This might be because the international language of air traffic control is English.

English cognates also show up a lot in the Russian language. "Motortsikl" and "Avtomobil" being two of them. IIRC the Kremlin thought it was an insidious Yankee plot. :)

Is there anyone besides Harry Harrison who even uses Esperanto any more?

I think some Armenians have a problem because the Jews "get all the attention" in regards to the Holocaust while not much is given to the Armenians. Either that, or it's because so many Armenians moved/lived/live in the diaspora which includes many Arab countries like Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, etc and obviously those all harbor immense hatred towards the Jews.

Could be a combination of both, could be a religious thing, could be something else, I don't know.

She also spends the entire article defending the Iranians and suggests that Ahmadinejad was her saviour. And she says Saberi's 4 months in jail was "a slap on the wrist". The whole article is disgusting even for CNN.

The average Republican voter now is not the average Republican voter of 1980-2004, except ethnicly. The Republicans are a smaller, more introverted, less hopeful caucus. They're not interested in the site you mention. They are interested in sites *like* the site you mention although they are in denial over whether, say, Pat Buchanan and FOX these days count.

As for insanity, yes, the average Republican has an interest in Intelligent Design; a Romantic interest rather than a Classical, intellectual one. I can't find much sane about that.
