Tech Note: Mobile Posting in the LGF Spy

Technology • Views: 3,980

Here’s an open tech thread — I’ve been testing the LGF Spy with my iPhone and it turns out to work really well for posting comments. In a regular comment thread, when the HTML page gets very large the iPhone’s Safari browser bogs down, and even crashes; makes it not too practical for comment posting.

But in the LGF Spy commenting system, the iPhone is actually very useable because the page never gets very large; no more than 25 comments are ever shown, as older ones scroll off the bottom. I’m not sure how well the Spy will work with browsers in other mobile devices, but with Safari it’s like having a little LGF chat room on your iPhone.

To post comments to a thread via the LGF Spy, log in, then click the green magnifying glass in the row of icons at the bottom right of the article.

Works fine for me. Well in a browser using IE6. What is it about work places that don't update their browsers. :)

With all the LGF membership dues, fees, and misc charges around here, now you want me to go out and buy an iPhone just to post?

I had to click on that spyglass twice before the comment box popped up. First time I did it I got bounced back to the main page. Could have been pop-up blocker on this puter, not sure. Hey this spy feature is pretty cool, and that secret feature Chalres added is neat too.

SHUT YOUR GOD DAMN MOUTH JIMMY!

Carter named what he called the "hurdles" Netanyahu presented in speech, including his insistence on expanding settlements, and his demand that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state, despite the fact that about 20% of its citizens are not Jewish.

The former president also cited the disputed matters between Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama, such as the problem of Jerusalem, but pointed out that he and former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin faced bigger differences and still managed to reach a peace agreement with Egypt.

Rivlin also brought up the issue of captive soldier Gilad Shalit who is being held in Gaza, and Carter said he would do his best to deliver a letter addressed to the soldier from his parents during his visit to the Strip on Tuesday.

One way you could do it would be to go to the LGF daily page to start with, which has an address like:

Charles was an old-school [Atari?] programmer back in the Olden Dayes, so he had a head-start in technical know-how. By the time this whole "blog" concept arose, he was already 25 steps ahead of the game, skill-wise. Which is why LGF has always been on the cutting edge of blog-usability features.

Not knowing how the monitoring is set up I would still venture to say that the thread spy feature is not as likely to be a website hit event in contrast to clicking a regular thread's New Comments button.

Most companies that monitor use bandwidth usage, not website hit counts. So no matter how the data is transferred still gets logged.

Numbering posts is a bit of a problem in the Spy, because the posts don't actually have real numbers relative to their place in a thread. Those numbers are generated when a thread is displayed. The actual ID numbers of comments are not consecutive, because they can be posted in several threads concurrently.

I could attempt to estimate a comment's relative number when displaying in the Spy, but when comments are being posted in several threads at once, it would be difficult to guarantee that it would always be accurate -- which might end up causing more confusion than it solves. And as a thread got larger, estimating the relative numbers would take more time.

So instead, the person's name is a link to their quoted comment and you can click it to see. If that comment was a reply or quote, it will also have a link back to the previous one, so the chain can still be read if you want to follow it.

I am more than grateful you keep improving the lgf experience, Charles. I know I would like to see number in the spy, but I also know the overhead needed would be prohibitive.

Not having numbers on a reply/quote shows it was done from the spy, so really that is a neat unintended feature. ;)

Drown them in our spare bandwidth!

It's a bandwidth arms race, people. Luckily, we have a 100,000-1 advantage.

Ping flood from a few dozen GSRs at MAEEast. That should be a hoot. Europeans might be pissed though since I think all routes into the ME go through there from here.

StopAhmadi continuation of the day's summary:

Since ppl cannot say "death to ahmadinejad" or such, they say "allah o akbar" which is "god is great" #iranelection

Even though ppl seem to be bugged on phones, some buy pay'n'go cards for cellphones #iranelection

However, it seems that the phone bugging is an act to scare ppl from communicating #iranelection

Just some advice -- I don't think a few threads is going to bother your ISP. Plus, the government of Iran is not going to report your IP. So long as you aren't hammering hundreds of threads, nothing to worry about on that end. If you are worried, find some proxy servers and connect through those.

On the issue of hurting Iranian citizen's ability to access the internet -- here is what Wired says:

[Link: www.wired.com...]

Iran has one of the world’s most vibrant social media communities. That’s helping those of us outside Iran follow along as this revolution is being YouTubed, blogged, and Tweeted. But Iran’s network infrastructure there is relatively centralized. Which makes Internet access there inherently unstable. Programmer Robert Synott worries that if outside protesters pour too much DDOS traffic into Iran, carriers there “will simply pull the plug to protect the rest of their network.”

For the moment, however, those connections are still live. And activists are using them to mobilize mass protests in Tehran. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi has just appeared. Tens of thousands of protesters are chanting “‘No fear, No fear, we are with each other.’”

At the end of the day, I think Iranian citizens' ability to to organize online is more important than shutting down Iranian state news services.

BTW - I am not not participating in the ping attacks, but am keeping an eye on it -- Stay tuned..

For the first time, I saw traffic police smiling at the crowd. Even the black-clad elite riot police were impassive. “Raise your arms, raise your arms,” one man murmured to them.

An excerpt from a great article in the NYT by Roger Cohen on the current situation in Tehran.

Thank you very much. I'm adjusting my actions accordingly. Will keep following the sitch. I love the idea of worldwide distributed grassroots cyberprotest, but only if it really helps.

An excerpt from a great article in the NYT by Roger Cohen on the current situation in Tehran.

I have some skepticism about Cohen's epiphany. And while I didn't nail this on my, Wretchard did. Cohen wrote:

I’ve argued for engagement with Iran and I still believe in it, although, in the name of the millions defrauded, President Obama’s outreach must now await a decent interval.

I’ve also argued that, although repressive, the Islamic Republic offers significant margins of freedom by regional standards. I erred in underestimating the brutality and cynicism of a regime that understands the uses of ruthlessness.

To which Wretchard replied:

A wrong thing never becomes right if you simply wait to do it when nobody’s looking. President Obama can ‘engage’ Iran now, but it must be the right kind of engagement. Not one which accepts the existence of a dysfunctional regime; that comes to terms with the devil. No. It must be diplomacy with the end in view of containing, and perhaps at some point facilitating the demise of a regime which the Iranian people themselves wish to be rid of.

The policy debate should not be about ‘decent intervals’ but whether the US aims for ‘behavior change’ or ‘regime change’. The tactics can be debated. But the strategy should be clear. If the strategy is wrong, the only thing an interval will do is change the timing of betrayal.

Lower left front of vest, dark spot, possible entry wound.

/TV exaggerates what gunshot wounds actually look like, especially under clothing.

Viva La Revolution! Now all we need is for some government entities to step up and provide the new Iranian "freedom fighters" with the equivalent training and poundage of C4 explosives that the Iranian regime exports every year... as long as they promise only non-civilian use (unlike Iranian regime).

First the Kindle and now the iPhone?

Charles, you're causing serious tech envy up here in Canada!

96 Dom  Tue, Jun 16, 2009 10:28:03am

Wicked, Charles. On the Blackberry the Links pages are also pretty easy to use, but I recall finding it hard to log in and stay logged in. Blackberry just doesn't like scripts, and while this Curve is my favourite phone to date, the HTC Vox was better at that. Later on I'll put the Spy to the test and report back.
