Notice that the article calls them "police" at one point, and "troops" at another.

Not much difference between the two in Nigeria.

I wonder if the Nigerians will call it a massacre or not. I wonder if the Nigerians will be called mass-murderers by the NYTimes tomorrow.

They are using the Sri Lankan model of suppressing terror, one that we can't.

19 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 5:48:27pm

The Hama rules in effect.

Nigeria simply dealt with the threat as it was. They saw these Islamists as a mortal threat and attacked them with the intent to eliminate the threat. They shelled them with artillery and gave no quarter.

They captured the leader, who was killed while trying to escape.

I'd say that the Nigerians sent a real message. Expect another message to be sent to the Nigerian government in response - primarily in the form of attacks on Westerners and/or the oil infrastructure that the country is heavily reliant upon.

Nobody seemed to car much about Black September, either.

Estimates of the number of the people killed in the ten days of Black September range from three thousand to more than five thousand, although exact numbers are unknown. The Palestinian death toll in 11 days of fighting was estimated by Jordan at 3,400, while Palestinian sources often cite the number 10,000 mainly civilians killed. Arafat at some point claimed that 20,000 had been killed. The Western reporters were concentrated at the Intercontinental Hotel, away from the action. Nasser's state-controlled Voice of the Arabs from Cairo reported genocide.

I don't think any religion's shrines or holy buildings should count as a "safe zone" when dealing with the police or military. This is not a game of tag. This is the real world.

If a Christian criminal runs and hides in a church and then shoots at the police from there -- shoot at him back, killing him in the church if that's the way things turn out.

If a Jewish criminal runs and hides in a synagogue and then shoots at the police from there -- shoot at him back, killing him in the synagogue if that's the way things turn out.

If a Buddhist criminal runs and hides in a temple and then shoots at the police from there -- shoot at him back, killing him in the temple if that's the way things turn out.

If a Muslim criminal runs and hides in a mosque and then shoots at the police from there -- shoot at him back, killing him in the mosque if that's the way things turn out.

I have no problem with any of those scenarios.

Study Catches Two Bird Populations As They Split Into Separate Species

A new study finds that a change in a single gene has sent two closely related bird populations on their way to becoming two distinct species. The study, published in the August issue of the American Naturalist, is one of only a few to investigate the specific genetic changes that drive two populations toward speciation.

Imagine the reaction if Western agents slaughtered a hundred Sunni pilgrims on their way to Mecca. The outrage would spark incendiary rhetoric, riots and revenge killings from Peshawar to Paris.

But when Sunni suicide bombers murdered 118 Shia pilgrims (and wounded almost 200 more) on Tuesday, Sunnis around the globe looked away: Shias only count as Muslims when America can be blamed for their suffering.

Many of those Shia victims of religious totalitarianism were traveling on foot to Karbala to honor Mohammed's grandson Hussein - who was butchered by the founders of Sunni Islam, to whom power was worth more than the Prophet's family.

The next time the UN starts debate on condemning Israel, the Israeli and US ambassadors should bring this up, point out the double standard, and ask that Israel should get the same standard. They should say that if Israel is condemned while Nigeria was not, the UN has shown its bias and has lost all its credibility in any peacemaking efforts in the mideast; Israel will not cooperate or accept them in any activities.
And the US should say if Israel is being singled out, the UN can go leave.

If you want to see some evidence of the rest of the world holding Israel under a different microscope, look no further than Black September. The Jordanian Government slaughtered 30,000, "Palestinians," rapidly to keep them from entering Jordan, (with their guns.) Nary a peep was heard from the rest of the world, let alone the U.N. When a single, "Palestinian," manages to detonate himself in a work accident, it is considered a, "tragedy." A.P. et al is all over it.

This is about land, oil, tribal conflicts, and sectarian conflict. Over the past few years AQ and others have sent people to the area first to make money & interdict oil by kidnapping oil workers, but secondly to pick at all scabs and inflame the region. Now it's full bore Islamist uprising, but I suspect they moved too early.

re: #80 JacksonTn

PWD ... I believe if tv news just disappeared tomorrow it would not matter one single bit ... I know it would not matter to me at all ... worthless ...

What The Dan and most of the rest of his ilk don't realize is that anymore, people only watc TV news for the immediacy and the video. Nobody cares what they think anymore, and this is because they have given up honestly trying to live up to journalistic ethics. They have their predominantly left-wing agenda, and their need to sell ads, so they pander to the lowest of audiences, serving up nauseating fluff and Democrat talking points. When they do get upright about something, it's crackpots like Keith Olbermann, Jack Cafferty, Lou Dobbs, or Rachel Maddow--commentary at best, but mostly opinion.
CNN, which I largely detest, at least got onboard with iReport, which is theway it's going to be. TV news provides rapidly deployable resources, or meshes their resources with public resources (folks on the streets with cellphone cams and twitter accounts), and the analysis will be taken on by the cloud.
Audiences are increasingly receiving their news on a 'pull' model, rather than the traditional news 'push'.
The MSM needs to get their product, and their resources, into the 'pull' market.
Perhaps what the AP is doing will actually facilitate this, as a monetizable layer between the traditional MSM business model and the end product which is non-profit. Like LGF.

In 1973 I went to college with a Nigerian guy whose father was some high ranking minister in that country. Tuition paid by the gov't. He was studying civil engineering and his brother was in England studying poly sci. They were going to bring the resources of their country to fruition. The next ruling class more or less. By 1974 they were penniless orphans. Family killed in a so-called bloodless coup. Nigeria is like the old west working out their problems. They are backward in many ways, politics not so much.
IMO the Islamists are way out of their league there.

Four of the most powerful business leaders in America arrived at the White House one day last month for lunch with President Barack Obama, sitting down in his private dining room just steps from the Oval Office.

But even for powerful CEOs, there’s no such thing as a free lunch: White House staffers collected credit card numbers for each executive and carefully billed them for the cost of the meal with the president.

The Koran is holy to Muslims. Mosques are not innately holy. They are not "consecrated ground" as are churches. They are meeting places. The presence of weapons and the use of the building for meetings of murderers does not offend Islam. Any outrage on their part born of "desecration" would be hypocritical, and probably only vented to awaken Christian or Western sympathy.

Are you implying that Mosque = Armory? Just wondering.

OT, sorry - but here is Tapper's description of the beer summit, via AllahPundit. Interesting:

In the less than two minutes that we were out there, Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. Jim Crowley did almost all of the talking. It didn’t appear chummy, but then again Gates has said Crowley racially profiled him, falsified a police report about him, and owes him an apology. Crowley says he did nothing wrong, resents being portrayed as a racist, and has said he came here with the understanding that he and Gates had agreed to disagree…
Both Gates and Crowley brought their families to the White House and they toured the East Wing together before the sit-down. Gates brought his kids, fiancé and father. Crowley brought his wife and kids.

I don't have any problem with the phrase itself, or what it means, although I agree that it is often used when it should not be. It strikes me as a mature, rational way to move past a disagreement *when appropriate* in order not to get hung up on one thing when many need consideration.
The problem I see is when folks on the left retreat to that reasonable-sounding accommodation when they start to lose an argument.

268 David Simon  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 7:16:24pm

How the government competes:

As everyone else’s taxes rise, one favored outfit may not have to pay federal taxes for years: General Motors. In another sweet deal from its benefactors on Pennsylvania Avenue, the government-owned car company is set to profit from billions of dollars in tax breaks not available to other businesses in the same predicament.

The new GM will be allowed to claim a tax benefit from some $16 billion of net operating losses carried over from the old company, allowing it to avoid paying taxes on future profits, perhaps for years. The issue is a common accounting practice called “tax-loss carry forward,” under which businesses can write off losses against future profits for up to 20 years.

Lawmakers wrote up a special provision for auto makers (GM was the only company that qualified).

And I must chastise WSJ for this sloppy bit of reporting:

The losses are considered important assets on any company’s balance sheet, but they typically don’t survive bankruptcy. Under a longstanding section of the tax code passed to prevent companies from buying other companies for the purpose of assuming their tax losses, a business that undergoes a change in ownership usually has to forfeit the old company’s net operating losses.

Wrong. The losses are limited based on the value of the company and the "long term tax-exempt rate."

That awful movie was not even the story from the book. The book is literature, and the movie was worse than a summer-action flick for the poop it spattered all over that magnificent book.
The book has several philosophical and political points to make, and it makes them clearly. The movie was too good for all of that, and took great pains to contradict the points made in the book, with the inevitable leftist cynical wanking about the way the cruel old world works.
I don't even remember the details from the movie--I just have a crystal clear recollection of my anger and assessment of that miserable movie.

When we depicted Sarah Silverman behind a hole in a sheet or Jonah Hill dressed as Moses holding two kegs as if they were tablets, we weren’t trying to be shocking—we were trying to communicate something truthful about contemporary Jewishness. Yes, that may sound impossibly high-fallutin, but it’s the truth and while we kind of don’t give a shit whether the magazine wreaks havoc on smug and sanctimonious visions of Jewish life, we do care when our intentions (or those of our collaborators) are distorted.

Virtually every pitch we received leading up to the publishing of our Germany Issue circled back to the Nazis and the Holocaust and almost all of them were humorous in nature.

It's not that different with what Mel Brooks did with his movies. Even Seinfeld did an episode about getting busted making out with some chick while watching Schindler's List.

re: #288 haakondahl

That awful movie was not even the story from the book. The book is literature, and the movie was worse than a summer-action flick for the poop it spattered all over that magnificent book.
The book has several philosophical and political points to make, and it makes them clearly. The movie was too good for all of that, and took great pains to contradict the points made in the book, with the inevitable leftist cynical wanking about the way the cruel old world works.
I don't even remember the details from the movie--I just have a crystal clear recollection of my anger and assessment of that miserable movie.

I've heard about the movie, and have avoided it so far. But I've read the book a couple of times.

The movie is only a shadow of a reflection of a copy of the ideas contained in the book. Considering who the director was, Paul Verhoeven, I think even Michael Moore would have been hard-pressed to make it more leftist propagandish.

Hmmm. Good point, tough call. The Abyss, as well. nothing wrong with the book, love Orson Scott Card, but the movie was spectacular. Although, as I think back on it, that may in fact have been a novelisation of the movie.
Also, I have to give very high marks to DUNE, for its reasonable of flawlessly accomplished companion-work treatment of the book. Lok past the wierding modules and such; there was no way that the real conflicts in the book, which were mostly unspoken, internal, would ever come across on the screen. They would have wound up explaining what could not be shown, and it would have failed miserably. So they didn't even try, which was the right move, and instead portrayed the worlds and the characters involved, and I have to say, they nailed the look, the tone--everything.
I view the movie as an inversion of, say, David Attenborough's TV series and a coffee table companion book. In this case, the movie is a companion volume to the book. Brilliant.

So, what sort of beer did you end up serving, and what did the brewers give you for the publicity?

I had a Bud Light , Professor Gates had a Sam Adams Light, Sgt. Crowley had a Blue Moon, and the Vice President had a Buckler which is a non-alcoholic beer.

For drinking the Bud Light, I will be featured in two of the first 30 second spots for next year's SuperBowl. In keeping with my Progressivism, the ads will be funny yet seriously themed around an issue of great social significance (in other words, they won't actually be funny, but Progressives will insist that they are and then ask friends to watch them at work the next day, taking careful note of who among their cowarkers laughs and who doesn't).

I don't know what deals the others made.

But for Joe to drink non-alcoholic beer, he's gotta be getting one hell of a deal.

I think I know the answer, but I'll ask anyway. Do you think the government should continue the cash for clunkers deal by adding more money or let it end early as a victim of it's own success ? I'm not sure if even the original 4 billion would have lasted with the sales blitz that took place since Germany spent more and with a smaller population. The good news is that there appears to be some pent up demand and the rebate actually worked to drive sales.

The program was certainly used is it ran out of money so soon. Probably sold a lot of cars. Maybe it was only intended to provide a short boost.

The NYT spin on this: ‘Clunkers’ Auto Rebate Plan So Popular That It’s Broke

Late in the day the group said the Transportation Department had responded by telling it to stop taking applications at midnight. Both the government and the dealers were concerned that buyers would drive off the lot assuming they had a big rebate that would not, in fact, be available.

The Transportation Department had no official comment on Thursday, but in the evening, a White House official, who refused to be identified, said that the program had not, in fact, been suspended. The dealers’ group said, though, that the last instructions it had were to cut off applications at midnight Thursday.

I would buy a new car if I had money. The stimulus hasn't reached me.

My lease is up in November, just got a manufacturer letter, they'll waive my last three payments, absorb any extra miles (which I have), if I want to come on down and make a deal.

It's a bit hard to calculate the true value of the offer, it's not nearly as good as it sounds, but I may be driving a new (import) by the end of next week, if I can get organized. I hope Obama is happy.

516 J.D.  Thu, Jul 30, 2009 8:31:27pm
...There are nearly 350 models of car, truck, and minivan available in the U.S. market, but only a righteous remnant gets Congress's green imprimatur. Chrysler, for example — which has received billions in federal bailout dollars — qualifies only nine of its 20 new models for Washington’s rebate. Some stimulus.

Worse, Democratic demands that the guzzlers be permanently shredded means that already hurting used-car and -parts businesses will suffer. By insisting that the cars not only be crushed — but also that their engines be disabled — Congress’s decree will penalize the industry at time when a dozen U.S. parts suppliers have filed for bankruptcy this year.

“Why throw away good parts when the supply chain is in jeopardy?” the Automotive Recyclers Association’s Michael Wilson asked the AP. Good question.

So obsessive is Washington that NHTSA is actually advising car dealers to replace a trade-in’s motor oil with a sodium silicate solution — then run the engine to ruin it so scrap dealers can’t resell any of its parts.

The victims will be lower-income Americans who typically buy only used parts and vehicles. “Now you’re removing cars people could afford, and they’re not available anymore,” says Norm Wright, a Denver recycler. “There will be fewer cars to pull from, so the price of parts will go up.”

SUVs, apparently, aren’t the only things being sacrificed at the green altar.

Good grief.

I only got it up over 110 once. The flawless power steering combined with the fact that the car weighed NOTHING, and the original 620# springs up front which should have been upgraded to 720#s whenever the motor was swapped, that all added up to a more aerodynamic performance than anything road-related. Slowed down VERY gently, and got it back "on" the road.

They are a little disappointed in the web hits after the Beer Summit and they said "if we don't see more hits soon then the next SuperBowl is going to provide you with a 'teachable moment' or two. As old Augie Bush used to say 'When you've screwed Budweiser, you've screwed yourself.'"

On competely unrelated thoughts, have I mentioned that I am drinking a cold, refreshing, tasty yet not filling BudLight right now?

Perhaps Thursday night threads should be called the BudLight Thursday Night Drinking Thread?

Go to bed, you fuckin' Commie bastard,

CAPITLASIST DREAMS TO YOU!

MM ... right .. everybody has a right to come to this country legally ... when you get here do not friggin go about trying to change everything about this country ... I hate Tyson and they are assholes for even letting that crap happen in the first place ... they ONLY hired the people from Somalia after they got busted for illegal Mexicans ... I do not buy Tyson Chicken ... there are many farmers in this area who raise chickens for Tyson ... I know how hard it is to stop growing for larger chains ... but I wish it would be more in the media ... people do not know because the media will NOT report it ...

Quiet, consumer boy-cott.

What's it going to pay?

Yeah, what will you pay Charles. You and I are both from Chicago: You know as well as I do that you need to pay for that kind of publicity. In the case of Charles, though, you might have something to trade; Dan Rather wants to meet with you about the media. You could use the meeting to mock and discredit him publicly. I'm sure Charles would consider that payment.

re: #532 haakondahl

I only got it up over 110 once. The flawless power steering combined with the fact that the car weighed NOTHING, and the original 620# springs up front which should have been upgraded to 720#s whenever the motor was swapped, that all added up to a more aerodynamic performance than anything road-related. Slowed down VERY gently, and got it back "on" the road.

Avanti, would that car beat the Studebaker Avantis you have restored?

As a matter of fact, I just e-mailed the editor about it. Enough is enough.

Sorry, Bud is owned by a Belgian company. I'll drink good American beer, like Sam Adams (brewer, patriot).

To be honest, driving a supercharged Avanti is fun on a nice day, in the 70's. I needed something that would be a daily driver with all the creature comforts. I have 10-20 Studebakers a year come and go from my house every year, so I have plenty of toys.

We should hire the Nigerians as international peacemakers to help us take care of terrorists. Based upon the account of the news report, with appropriate discounting of speculation, it seems that they did an excellent job.

In the past 10 years, Nigeria, a country with a third the population of the US, has suffered causalities exceeding three 9/11 attacks.

Their actions reminds me of how decisively and violently the Saudis deal with such problems, including a similar attack on Islamist hostage takers at the main mosque in Mecca.

But have you restored Avantis that could beat that custom Mustang in a race? I ask because its interesting to see your perspective on how cars stack up.

You don't send troop like those who carried out that assault on a peacekeeping mission. You send men like that to win the peace by trashing the bad guys.

On the last paragraph of the first page he posts this... "This certification is not the same thing as the certificate," This warmed over nirther rubbish. As for the tone of the article, it drips with kooky insinuations and Obama hatred.

After reading the third page I must concur. McCarthy stray too close to Nirtherism for comfort. It stupid for him to go there. The correct move is to dismiss the Nirther notions as baloney and move on.

Not sure. The R3 Avantis ran 172 MPH on the Salt Flats and in the high 12's in the quarter. The best I've run is 13.30 at 104 in the quarter.

DF ... nirthers are whacked ... I do not include the wanting to see his college transcripts in the same category ... I feel that it is and was (but then if you asked for that during the campaign you were branded a racist) important to at least know something about the President in his early years ... because really what is the reason for withholding his transcripts? ... I do not get it ... we saw Michelle's thesis not that she was running for office and I know she was off limits kinda ... why not Obama's writings ... well, except for his poems ... really if I were Harvard Law Review ... I would want to show my stuff ...

Whoever approved that for publication has serious judgment issues. Its more fodder for the Media Matters crowd. Did you notice how McCarthy tries to posit himself as a smart nirther and tries to distance himself from kooky nirthers? Its a distinction without a difference.

Nigeria thought this was pretty much OK until the nutcases started killing Muslims. I have linked to the cult for weeks as has Thanos. Just let me say I am not overly impressed with the Nigerian reaction to bigotry, rape, sexual mutilation, and torture. They responded when they felt it was convenient.

Interesting article on the Nirther mess on National Review's website:

Suborned in the U.S.A.

Please read and discuss. It worth a look, since the author seems to stay far away for crazy. But I may be wrong, so I ask for other opinions.

re: #519 MrPaulRevere

I'll tell you what, as a paid subscriber to NR, I am supremely pissed they published it.

I only scanned it, but I couldn't help noticing all the italics that the author considers necessary to drive home essential points that the reader might otherwise overlook.

Italics are for Ivy League wusses. REAL conservatives use CAPITAL LETTERS so as to leave NO DOUBT as to EXACTLY what they mean.

People look to NR for sane opposition; the commentary is hard hitting and occasionally over the top but there is no excuse for publishing McCarthy's piece. None.

I use *asterisks*, but then again, I'm a *libertarian*, not a wuss or a CONSERVATIVE. Then again, to get a point across, I'll often use :-P

And may I add you have a gift for succinctly relating the key point.
