The engineers had just overhauled the engine or whatever on our Minesweeper and had a bunch of discarded roller bearings ... one had a slingshot (wrist rocket) ... we stood on the fantail and took turns shooting at seagulls - this was back in the early 60s - one guy tracked a gull and let go - you could see the bearing - a hefty chunk of metal - arcing out towards the gulls path of flight and wham - right under the wing - the gull dropped like a stone - we were suddenly aware of what had happened - everyone, including the shooter were mortified - we never did that again.
Now throwing eggs from our darkened ship at dry dock towards pedestrians trying to cross a bridge was another discretion and distraction.
Wild and crazy boredom Navy times in Charleston ... I belatedly apologize to our targets.

I've always had a thing for women with British accents even the almost unintelligible cockney accents. Never dated any woman that had one though. My girlfriend in 1995 went to London for 4 months for school. I asked her to try really hard to pick up the accent for me. She didn't come back with an accent, just a new boyfriend.

I'm trying to think of a scenario- any scenario- where my accent (or lack thereof) could be considered 'charming' or 'alluring' by any stretch of the imagination.
I actually don't have an accent per-se, but I can mimic the Southern, Boston and Canadian accents fairly convincingly, yet I get the feeling those are accents people automatically deduct IQ points from the second they hear somebody speaking it.
I can also speak conversational Spanish and some basic Russian, but I don't think fumbling through some really simple guidebook Spanish (or Russian) would be considered all that attractive.

After I got out of the Air Force, I looked for airline jobs. Non-existent. Well, not strictly true. I got an offer from a commuter for $18 large a yesr. So I wnt south and got a job as a geologist and knocked around the Gulf for a couple of years and then went with a multi-national that specialized in real time downhole data logging. I was basing myself out of New Orleans, but spent three months overseas and one month back home on leave. The overseas tours were three weeks on, one week off, but they kept you on half pay on your down time and gave you a plane ticket to wherever you wanted to go on the continent on your week off.
Pretty sweet.
Most of my work the first year and a half was in the North Sea (Aberdeen was referred to as Abilene because there were so many Americans coming through the town at the time), and my first three week stint was on the Dixielynn 95, which was staffed with about 80% Scots, 19% Brits, and me. I got off the helo, walked into the Hilton, and was met by a Highlander who attempted to explain the ins and outs of the rig to me. I looked around in a panic. I really was not able to understand him. One of the Brits on my crew was walking by and I grabbed him and asked him to translate. They both thought this was hilarious.
So, for about two weeks, I was the idiot yank. After a while, I was able to follow along, and by the end of the first three weeks, I was fluent. I can still pull off a reasonable Glaswegian or Edinburgian accent, but that Highland brogue is so still so dense I can't pull it off.

I'm sure you could write a very convincing press release, and borrow a few graphics. (It's that, or claim you've found the real birth certificate.) I wouldn't put it past the wingnutsphere to buy it lock, stock, and barrel.
You could probably even argue it was a 100% made-up farce, and they'd still run with it.
It really has gotten to that point, hasn't it? On one hand, it's laughable. On the other hand it's just pitiful. And possibly destructive.
I think sane, reasoned, political discourse is necessary for this country to govern itself. But that assumes two adult organizations in the room. The Ds, for all their faults (and I am the first to admit they are Legion), put itself up as the Loyal Opposition when the Rs had control of the Exec, the Reps for all except the last two years of his term, and, for most of GWs presidency, the Senate. Was there BDS? You betcha! But the Ds national hierarchy quashed it, to a large extent. It didn't become the *public* face of the party to the country at large.
Things have changed. The Rs national hierarchy seems to be flailing as to what to do about *those people*. Reject them? Embrace them?
I can tell you this:
I live in Texas. The Rs down here *compete* for lunatic status. They try to out-Right each other in every primary race. This is now being played out between Rick Perry (A&M Cheerleader) and Kay Bailey Hutchinson (SMU Cheerleader) for the '10 Governor's race.
Any wonder I am a Democrat down here?

Oh, and as for which year is warmest in recent times... that depends upon whether one includes the Arctic temperatures. The UK data ignores the Arctic temperatures above a certain latitude, but the GISS data includes it. That is why there is a difference between the GISS and Hadley charts.

It was the first time I'd ever been to a strip club, and a girlfriend and I duped this young Mormon friend into going with us. It is in the Bible:
Beer
Beer (bē'ur) [key], in the Bible. 1. Unidentified place, to which Gideon's son Jotham fled. 2. Unidentified place, E of the Dead Sea between the Arnon and the Jordan, where Israel camped and dug a well. The little song quoted is one of the oldest poetic pieces in the Bible.

I found this tidbit about the old strip joint, from 1987:
HONOLULU Although they might have heard legends that would make a Hawaiian volcano god blush, denizens of these islands need not tremble just because Steve McMichael is making his first Pro Bowl appearance. The hell-raising Bears defensive tackle is enjoying Hawaii family style, shooting a few rounds of golf and sipping drinks on the beach with wife Debra.
This is not the McMichael who once cleared out a bar by grabbing a microphone and singing his own invective-littered version of a fight song.
This is not the McMichael who, for $30 a night, bounced out unruly patrons from a strip joint called The Doll House South in Texas.

Holy crab. While I was looking up anything on the old Doll House South, I came across a post from a guy in Texas... Anyway, he now has an adult diaper fetish. (I hope it's not same guy. I'd feel bad if we damaged him so much he's into diaper pron.)
I must be out of the loop, because I didn't know there even was an adult diaper fetish. Ewww.
There was a guy in Florida who hired a girl to alledgedly take care of his brother who wore diapers and had to be feed. Turned out it was him. The cops couldn't charge him since he paid her. Freak.

India Pale Ale
Invented by the Brits, for shipment to the beer-deprived colonists in India. Ordinary ale spoiled during the voyage in pre-refrigeration days, but they found that by increasing the amount of hops and alcohol the shipment survived in a drinkable state.
Modern IPAs are some of the highest alcohol content beers around. I saw one at the store last week (Doghead? Not sure) boasting a 20% alcohol rating; it was called something like "90 minute ale" because drinking it any faster than that would be...well, too much fun, for some people.
I haven't tried it yet. I kinda burned out my hops receptors - and everything else on my tongue - during an IPA binge last year. Might be time to look into it again, though.

This Obama Peace Prize business has caused quite a stir. One of the things I have found very interesting is the heated criticism which has zeroed in on the fact that Obama was inaugurated just 12 days before the nomination deadline.
It seems to me that this criticism is a red herring of the first order, for the simple reason that noone seriously maintains that Obama has accomplished anything concrete either before OR after the nomination deadline which would in any way qualify him for the prize.
So then why did Obama win the Nobel Peace Prize?
In my view it was the huge national and international significance of his election to the Presidency of the United States which was the sole basis for the award. The election of a black man to the Presidency has singlehandedly raised international HOPE for PEACE and RACIAL HARMONY in America and around the world to such lofty levels that this event alone was considered sufficient basis for the award.
After due consideration and as totally unrealistic and downright delusional as this may turn out to be, this is nevertheless my belief as to why they gave Obama the prize.
FWIW

Now I know it is going to get warm and cool as part of the overall global warming, but where do the record colds come from. I did not notice any huge cold spikes on any global warming graphs showing a period in which not only the temperature drops, but drops to the coldest record.
I have always looked at MN weather as a canary of the world weather. We have warm weather coming up from the Golf of Mexico and cold from the Arctic. This mixes above MN and creates our weather patterns. So I am going to save people a whole lot of time and money by announcing that Global Warming is Dead, now everyone and get back to doing more important stuff. Like fighting global cooling.

Interesting article.
It increasingly appears that at the very least we may be in a temporary period of global cooling which may last between another one and thirty years, then to be followed by a probable resumption of the global warming trend. And all of this is occurring despite a small but steady increase in global CO2 levels.
Hardly seems as conclusive as it did even a few months ago.
As a non-scientist, I feel obliged generally to defer to the majority scientic concensus on any given subject - unless I conclude that there is a political agenda afoot, or unless I conclude that there is a significant difference of scientific opinion.
As ever more evidence comes in, I am confident that the science will improve on this politically charged subject.

Benny Hinn Ministries doesn’t publish its finances, but one report estimated it takes in $100 million a year. Hinn says only that the ministry pays him more than half a million dollars a year — but that income doesn’t include money from the sales of his books and his other private business ventures.

Onto your general question... it is clear (to me anyway) that LGF puts a very high premium on modernity, and especially science. Along the vein, Charles has been posting many threads to expound on the science and to confront the culture-war related dismissal of that science.

I'm sure last nights commentary was far better than this mornings news: Gunmen Attack Pakistani Army Headquarters; 10 Dead
The story (earthlink.net) as reported is upsetting to me. In the story the perpetrators are referred to as gunmen, assailants, and attackers although para. 3 does make reference to a Taliban Leader who was apparently killed by a drone. I don't understand why it can't be reported as an apparent Taliban attack.
Any way, thankfully its a Fall Saturday and the TV will be on.

" Wintertime observations of mesoscale cellular convection (MCC) over the East China Sea have resulted in criteria that have a remarkable similarity to those reported by Woodcock (1975) in the study of thermals and gull flight behavior. It has been determined that the surface wind speed (V) and the air-sea temperature difference (deltaT) prescribe unique and compatible conditions for both the occurrence of MCC and soaring by sea gulls. Specifically, the onset of MCC when V is between 5 and 9 m s–1 is inversely proportional to deltaT in the range 5 to 7 °C. Elsewhere, the onset of MCC occurs under conditions of direct proportionality between V and deltaT. Necessary conditions for the occurrence of MCC due to heating from below are deltaT ges 5 °C and V ges 5 m s–1. The boundaries of the convective regime for MCC are discussed and interpreted in accordance with the regime for sea-gull soaring and similarity concepts."

Well, its good to know that Pakistan still can understand who its enemies are. Obama would answer an attack like this with "Unclench your fist."
IMHO, given the direction events seem to be taking, this attack might (might) be the "beginning of the end" of the Taliban using the FATA with impunity. We can always hope.

Just posted in the spinoffs --
This is, in a sense, VERY good news -- the unmistakable "declaration of war" will draw a furious response from the Army.
Gunmen hold up to 15 hostages in Pakistan army HQ
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan – Heavily armed militants were holding between 10 and 15 soldiers hostage inside army headquarters Saturday after they attacked the complex in an audacious assault on Pakistan's most powerful institution.
Again with the "militants" and "gunmen". They are TERRORISTS.

Pardon, but you're thinking "military", and for Pakistan, this isn't merely a military problem.
Actually, though, the problem gets worse for Pakistan when you consider the other elements. What makes this event good news is that it could solidify the Army's resolve. The Army is the only force in Pakistan which might be able to deal with it, BECAUSE the Army has used other means beside "military" in the past.

He has not been sitting on anything for months. He just got the formal request last Thursday, after asking for it before it had been even reviewed further down the chain.
The whole military plan in Afghanistan is being evaluated by the military and Gates before just rubber stamping a request. Crystal asked for the troops by years end, and he'll get some increase, but probably not 40K. Don't forget, Obama did send 20,000 more and ramp up drone attacks early on.
He's held two or three meetings so far with our best and brightest and I'd rather do that then make a policy mistake that might cost unnecessary casualties.

Well- I posted this the other day, but I think it bears repeating.
It is a telling marker of the ideological cohesiveness and extremism of this core group of philanthropies that three of the five founding members, Joseph Coors, David Koch and Harry Bradley, were members and financial supporters of the John Birch Society. The Scaife foundations, headed by Richard Mellon Scaife, are also involved, albeit in less direct ways.
In the past 20 years this core group of funders has, by many reports, built and strategically linked an impressive array of almost 500 think tanks, centers, institutes and "concerned citizens groups" both within and outside of the academy. It is particularly telling to observe the funding sources of these organizations during the first 10-15 years of their existence, when their ideological identities were being established. A small sampling of these entities include the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Manhattan Institute, the Hoover Institution, the Claremont Institute, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, Middle East Forum, Accuracy in Media, and the National Association of Scholars, as well as Horowitz's Center of the Study of Popular Culture.
As for where I get my news- I'm strictly an internet news girl now.

Knowing that McChrystal would be asking for more tropps, the "talks" should have started way before the formal request was submitted
As a matter of fact, ALL contingencies should have ongoing talks, not just when a "formal request" is presented

What kind of change was made? The reason I ask is I missed something last night hat Charles apparently had to clean up in the spinoff links. There were links to people abusing the tool, but if I clicked on the link it just re-directed back to the front page.

30 arrests at anti-Islam protest in Birmingham
At least 30 people were arrested when a group demonstrating against Islamic fundamentalism clashed with anti-racism protesters in Britain on Saturday, police said.Trouble flared as supporters of the English Defence League (EDL) and hundreds of activists from the Unite Against Facism movement faced off in Manchester, northwest England.
Several hundred police in riot gear separated the EDL protesters, who waved placards saying "No More Mosques in England", from the rival demonstration across a square in the city.
Police said a total of around 2,000 people took part.
A police spokesman said most of the arrests were for public order offences, but no one was injured.

The crackerjack general appointed by the President to the position was put there because the President thought him likely to do at least as good a job, if not a better job, than his predecessors. So, he's in charge, and he reports, some months back, that the whole thing will fall into hell in unless we increase the troop-levels and shift our focus without losing the gains we've made already. About 60,000 troops would do it, although he could make do with fewer.
Now, what's the hold-up with the President? My theory - he talked a peacenik game throughout the campaign, and doesn't wish to jeopardize liberal activists and lose their support on this whole health care deal.

All the while though, the building continues to burn, the firefighters continue to die, and the flames spill over onto neighboring rooftops. Oh, did we forget to mention, there are people in the burning building who are quite likely to die or be injured if the flames aren't extinguished in short order, and who have been told repeatedly to "Shelter in place" until we can rescue them?

re: #546 Rightwingconspirator
Most folks aren't aware of these think tanks' funding sources. Once people become aware, they can better filter out any bias they perceive in any piece. But if you're not aware there is a larger agenda, it's easier to be led to think differently. The point of the first piece I linked was that these various think tanks are not as independent as they claim. Many of them are interconnected, and most are funded by the same 5 foundations- intentionally:
In 1985, Michael Joyce left the Olin Foundation to assume the presidency of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, in Milwaukee. During this time, he not only built the Bradley Foundation into the largest and most influential right-wing foundation in the country, he also forged a formidable alliance among a small group of the nation’s largest, far right-wing foundations so that their resources could be more strategically deployed in support of the developing neoconservative agenda. Included in this alliance are the Koch Foundation (either directly or through its subsidiary the Claude Lambe Foundation), the Castle Rock Foundation (Coors) and the Sarah Scaife Foundations (either directly or through its subsidiaries the Carthage Foundation and the Alleghany Foundation) which, together with Olin and Bradley, have collectively financed the rise of the neoconservative movement in this country and have done so with an impressive display tactical precision.

He ran on getting al-Qaida and my guess is that's the turn we'll take based on this from my link:
National security adviser James Jones has said that according to maximum estimates, al-Qaida has fewer than 100 fighters operating in Afghanistan without any bases or ability to launch attacks on the West. Instead, the U.S. fight in Afghanistan is against the Taliban, now increasingly defined by the Obama team as distinct from al-Qaida. While still dangerous, the Taliban are seen as indigenous with almost entirely local and territorial aims and far less of a threat to the U.S.

Don't know if you recall, but that description of the Taliban is identical to the assessment of them just after al Qaeda got chunked outta Sudan. Yep, just a small regional force is all they were, all they ever were.
Al-Qaeda, as you must know, does not field an army, does not have traditional force structures, and has a complicated, nearly "viral" franchise. Sure, there may be only 100 or so men at arms under the al-qaeda banner in afghanistan now, and this because we've ground them down in battle and degraded their ability,
If we decide we've beaten al Qaeda and can go home, as the taliban are no danger to anyone but the afghans (although why we should toss the afghan people under the bus is more than I can know), does the possibility exist that al-Qaeda, now provided with an ideologically friendly power and without the inconvenience of US airstrikes, might not re-form?
