New GOP Site: NSFW

Politics • Views: 3,511

Someone please tell me that Michael Steele’s “blog” on the newly redesigned GOP website isn’t really named “What Up?

And even worse, the new website violates one of the cardinal rules of web design: web pages should never make sound without the visitor’s consent. The GOP home page has a little Javascript-animated Michael Steele who comes walking out and starts talking, like one of those incredibly annoying advertisements you see on cheesy websites.

It’s the political party with a website that’s not safe for work.

UPDATE at 10/13/09 10:38:52 am:

And at this time, the entire website is offline.

I am reminded of a stilted movie from the Sixties or the Seventies when the tight assed old fogies try to show how hip they are to the cool kids by hopelessly bungling what is hip or cool in an uncomfortable and stilted manner.

This is, a youngish Republican points out to me this morning, a bit of an unfortunate place for an empty page on the Republican National Committee’s nifty new website.

That would be the “Future Leaders” page.

I’d like to see a video of Chairman Steele telling the birthers, creationists, dominionists, AGW skeptics, tea partiers, beckbots, and any other miscreant that seems to have hijacked the Republican Party to stick it where the sun don’t shine. Now that would be change I could believe in!

What’s worse are sites that normally don’t, but have ads that do. You go there, thinking it is safe, and suddenly, noise!
I think the advertisers stopped that finally.
WebMD (iirc; it was some medical site) and Absolut did it a few years ago.

Conservatives could very easily approach and appeal to younger voters, Gen X-Y-Millenials if they would get back to some basics about limited government and liberty. Instead they are fighting the Dems over who’s flavor of government interference and overspending we should choose. Very bad mojo, even in the less radicalized parts of the party (wherever they are these days).

That’s why I consider myself conservative in the first place! So in its bizarre attempts to appeal to a younger crowds and shifts towards irrational radicalisms (birthers, etc.), it’s losing a young guy who called himself a “Buckley-Goldwater conservative” since he got his hands on National Review. 1. Tax.
2. Spend.
3. WHAT UP?!?
4. Job creation.

Obama has saved or put on hold hundreds and thousands of jobs. They even trained 60 people in Denver, using stimulus money, on how to weatherstrip homes.

#75 racists and homophobes for 40 years

That’s not fair - the Dems have had an equally appalling record, until they decided to paint the Republicans with that brush. Whitewashed the whole strange fruit South, turn that into someone else’s lynchings…

The left was quicker to pick up on the gay rights issues, but there is a question of chicken or egg there.

I sat thru a series of painful dinners before the elections, mostly because it was a hard left, hard union crowd. Between making fun of McCain for being old (and not being able to raise his arms), they told n*gger jokes and talked about how hard it would be to pull that lever in November.

Still, Steele’s website is not good - that’s important stuff.

The RNC should’ve just got Mr T to be their chairman and had done with it. Then at least they’d have had their token black man and projected their ideal tough, combative image to go with the ridiculous OTTness, whereas Steele is just a parody of a parody of a stereotypical black person. The GOP needs a new marketing team. cuz the old one - the one they are still using - SUCKS the Big One.

I don’t think there is anything the GOP can do to compete for Black votes in the near future. Long-term, I think they’d have to be brutally honest in accessing the facts and then strategize accordingly. I don’t think political parties often do long-term planning though.

re: #119 DaddyG

Point taken, I can see how you might have interpreted it as being racist, but that’s not what I meant at all. What I meant is that all the hip-hop talk, his use of street slang etc, is typical of how some people stereotype blacks, and it’s like he’s trying too hard to emphasise his race. I personally don’t believe that’s anything like a typical African-American, and I’m not a fan of pigeon-holing people of any race/nationality anyway.

I do however believe that the RNC elected him as a token gesture to the African-American community to try and counter Obama.

re: #128 Merryweather
Thanks for clarifying. I still don’t buy the RNC=racist crap. I think their message was a clunky attempt at appealing to a young demographic not a black one. Even a cynical interpretation would have to concede that appealing to Xers Yers and Millenials means more votes than trying to reach “urban” voters.

There ain’t no fool like an old fool and Byrd is an OLD fool. He’s also apologized for his conduct as a younger person and for being a Dixiecrat. Whether he’s sincere or not, I don’t know but at least he said it was a mistake.

re: #121 DaddyG

Sorry, for late response. The question isn’t whether individual libs are cons are racist, at least in the context discussed above. The lib/con distinction is relevant regarding the Civil rights movement, segregation, lynching, etc… . In other words, yes, Democrats as well as Republicans supported segregation, but the number of liberals supporting segregation was insignificant. Or in other words, the Southern Democratic Senators, for example, who resisted desegregation were by no standards liberal.

137 countrockulot  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 11:37:27am

I should make it clear that I in no way think that the majority of people who vote Republican are racist, or even that there are no racists that vote Democrat. What I believe is that after the passage of the Civil Rights Act it became unspoken Republican Party strategy to attempt to appeal to racist elements in society in order to garner votes, and the price tag for that has just started to come due and I believe it is going to be huge. It is rumored that after Johnson signed the Civil Right Act he said “We have lost the South for a generation.” The question becomes how long has the Republican Party lost minorities and I don’t think the solution is Micheal Steele or a blog called “What’s Up?”.

138 Merryweather  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 11:43:16am

re: #130 DaddyG

Yeah, on the whole I’d agree with your interpretation, but I still think there must have been an element of ‘if the Dems can do it, so can we’ thinking in there.

I’m also taking into account Steele’s “off the hook” and “urban hip-hop” comment.

As opposed to rural hip-hop…

The poor man. The son of one of my friends went through this for a while. He ‘discovered’ that he was black, and tried to impress his white school friends with his gangsta lingo and street authenticity. It works better if you haven’t gone to private Catholic schools your whole life. But his friends had also gone to Catholic schools, so…

But he was twelve. What Steele’s excuse is, I’m not sure.
