Glenn Beck: Shill for Gold Merchants

Media • Views: 4,304

Glenn Beck is in trouble again, this time for his blatant shilling for the gold merchants who capitalize on misery and discontent. The weeping, ranting Beck is fleecing his flock, preaching extreme right wing apocalyptic idiocy and getting rich off the gullible: Glenn Beck’s gold-gate problem.

Yet another controversy appears to be brewing around Fox News host Glenn Beck. Some are accusing him of a blatant conflict of interest concerning his frequent on-air promotion of an investment sold by one of his main advertisers: Gold.

For some time Beck critics have cried foul over his relationship with Goldline International, a precious metals vendor that features the TV and radio host’s endorsement prominently on their website. Critics charge that Beck is guilty of misleading his audience by often advising them to purchase gold in advance of the potential collapse of the value of the dollar on the world currency market, without disclosing that he is in fact a “paid spokesman” for Goldline. Beck’s on-air promotion of gold, which includes advising viewers to construct “fruit cellars” and to rely on a “three G system” of “God, Gold, and Guns” in the event of America’s collapse, dates back to his time as a host for CNN Headline News.

Glenn Beck also regularly talks up gold on his nationally syndicated radio show, where he often endorses Goldline during live commercial segments. Additionally, Beck has had the company’s CEO on as a guest. Advertisements for Goldline are also featured prominently on Beck’s own website, where he recently promoted gold in an audio clip warning of an apocalyptic future:

“When the system eventually collapses, and the government comes with guns and confiscates, you know, everything in your home and all your possessions, and then you fight off the raving mad cannibalistic crowds that Ted Turner talked about, don’t come crying to me. I told you: get gold.”

How does one commodity benefit us more than any other? Don't they all have the same problem from an economic standpoint?

Wrong.

Beck's promotion of gold presents a potential problem for Fox News, which strictly prohibits on-air personalities from making paid product endorsements. When contacted by Daily Finance for a comment on the matter, Fox News senior vice-president for development Joel Cheatwood said the network "makes an exception for its commentators who are also radio hosts," adding that they knew upfront that hiring Beck came with the understanding that he was also a radio host and that they "had to be accepting of certain elements of that." Nevertheless, a Fox spokeswoman said that the company is addressing the matter with Beck's agent, George Hiltzik.

Beck is being a pig, again. Buying gold at a historic high is damn bad plan. Know anyone who bought silver at $40 twenty plus years ago? Hunt Brothers scam?

My day job-I'm in the jewelry side of the gold bullion trade and we service retailers who sell coins to the public as well as jewelry makers. The argument for gold is that unlike currencies, it has never, ever lost its whole value. It is a growing segment of international reserves as the weak dollar has impact on currency reserve strategies. Its a small part of a good diversified portfolio at best.

Well I watch Beck everyday and have never seen any such thing. You on the other hand admit you've never watched, so you understanding is wrong.

Hearsay is not admissable in a court of law.

Critics charge that Beck is guilty of misleading his audience by often advising them to purchase gold in advance of the potential collapse of the value of the dollar on the world currency market, without disclosing that he is in fact a "paid spokesman" for Goldline. Beck's on-air promotion of gold, which includes advising viewers to construct "fruit cellars" and to rely on a "three G system" of "God, Gold, and Guns" in the event of America's collapse, dates back to his time as a host for CNN Headline News.

Lawyers would call that a conflict of interest, btw, and against the law. It's against the law because it's unethical.

I told my wife I was doing my part to help strengthen the dollar and revive our economy. I bought locally though, not from one of their advertisers.

In some settings that would be fine. Racial jokes are fine (as far as I'm concerned) in comedy clubs or comedy radio shows, tv etc. On a political forum they tend to take on a more ugly and offensive tone. Serious racial discussions would be fine on a blog focusing on sociology but on partisan political blog they just don't work well. When a black person looks at right wing blogs these days they'll quickly discover that conservatism is not for them. They are not welcome and that's very clear.

I actually listened to these guys and bought a few ounces recently. Why? Because if it's like most of my other investments of this type, I knew that the price would fall. Fast.

I told my wife I was doing my part to help strengthen the dollar and revive our economy. I bought locally though, not from one of their advertisers.

So far, I'm right on target. Less than two weeks after I bought near $1200, I'm already down 5%. You're welcome my fellow Americans. Just trying to pitch in. They're shiny too. Actually, some beautiful coins. I had never seen one before.

Just to be sure, there's nothing wrong with buying gold if that's what you want to do and invest. There's nothing wrong with Beck using his face/image to advertise if he wants, whatever he wants to sell. There is something wrong with using his talk show to sell a product without indicating he's a spokesman for said company.

I'm amused by the gold coin ads referring back to relative values back in the 1920's and 1930's without mentioning a few additional facts. Like that there was a global recession running at the time... and that just about all the nations were on a gold standard where you could essentially exchange your paper money for gold/silver coinage at par by default.

Of course, you are referring to the portability factor. For most, gold as investment becomes attractive with currency inflation and asset depreciation.

He addresses that too:

The cleanup can't come fast enough...

It'll never happen. He's tried it before--not because he thinks there's anything wrong with hatespeech, but because he wanted to make money:

I know I dropped the "c bomb" last week, but that was something I don’t do very often, and on top of that, I had no advertisers then.

I’m trying to get some advertisers — with the lone exception of a Killing Time ad from blog-friend Pegu, I haven’t made a dime this whole month — and so I’d appreciate if people calmed down a bit with the language.

Yes, I know I did it. I am not assigning moral fault or anything. It was my bad.

But I would appreciate it if commenters cooled it on unnecessarily obscene language and statements that might, as they say, scare the horses.

Here's an example of Ace's own 'political analysis'--after those advertisers failed to appear: (LANGUAGE WARNING)

As I have noted with footnotes and authoritative citations previously, Contessa Brewer is a dirty, lying, pus-mouthed whore.

A cheap, sore-riddled nasty bit of gutterscrunge who’ll rent you her mouth for the change in your pocket.

A tawdry wallow-trollop oozing with syphilitic fester who raises her filthy skirts at the scent of crack-smoke.

A disease-dripping pincushion, the media’s vile mattress of last resort, a pathogen in garish vinyl high heels, a loose-toothed croup-breathed nightcrawler reeking of bathtub gin, fungicide, and the genetic stink of human desperation.

A skanky bit of mung-trash sloughing off diseased skin like a leprous snake. (A leprous snake who whores out her verminous cloaca for two bits a pop, I mean.)

This sad clown of a whore, oozing with foul custard and slack and sloppy as an over-used trash bag, is too stupid to know how to lie judiciously, and so lies promiscuously and wantonly, demonstrating all the discretion she once showed in junior high when her nickname was "Automatic" Brewer.

By the way: No, I don’t think Contessa Brewer really "did" this. She’s too stupid. She doesn’t have that kind of responsibility. Her job is to wear a wonderbra, eat rice pudding with a "safety spoon," blow the line producer, and read the phonetically-spelled questions someone else writes for her.

Ace is scum. That will never change.

The other great investment I made recently was some stock in a new company that does something to solar panels to make them much more efficient. Got in on a friends and family round. Can't miss.

I told my wife that this investment would make global warming disappear. Voila! Exactly one week after receiving the private placement confirmation letter the "climategate" emails get hacked and made public and without going into the debate here over that, well, you understand.

So, if anyone here has a pressing issue of national or global importance you would like to see resolved via some awesome can't miss investment tips for me, let me know. I'm sure I can make all your dreams come true.

Normal people don't have the patience to debate topics like "Blacks are lazy" and Jews are greedy". How is that supposed to work? How is gold supposed to help in a situation like that?

1) what's to stop the evil government from confiscating the gold, too;
2) are marauding hordes of cannibals likely to be bought off, or is he suggesting gold has some sort of supernatural properties like garlic vs. vampires, for instance?

In the Twilight Zone scenario where there electricity is off, social order has completely collapsed, and everyone around you is either dead, a loot-crazed government agent, or a brain-eating cannibal (and Burgess Meredith just broke his glasses), somehow I don't think anyone is going to be thinking, "Whew, it's a damn good thing I have all this gold."

I also seems like FOX released the story themselves. There is no reason why this issue could not have been handled quietly and internally, but it's all over the press with juicy FOX corporate quotes all over it.

I'm less sanguine. In the entertainment world, the old saying is that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Beck thrives on slime. He'll cook up a fantasy about "the man" trying to keep him down, pitch it to his zombie hordes, and spike his viewership as a result.

You can try it on your own blog but I'll tell you what will happen. It's very predictable and I've seen it happen time after time on various blogs on the right and left (Dkos had huge problems with antisemitism a few years ago)
Normal people don't have the patience to debate topics like "Blacks are lazy" and Jews are greedy". They'll just scroll past and once they see enough comments like that they'll just stop visiting the blog. The only people with the time, energy and motivation to discuss this are the bigots. Pretty soon you'll have a blog full of bigots and the normal people will stop visiting.

Of course, you are referring to the portability factor. For most, gold as investment becomes attractive with currency inflation and asset depreciation.

Usually, those things do not happen in tandem, like they are now.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the 'sew into the kids' underwear' approach. Not as an investment plan.

I think Fox knows Beck is too much trouble. They have lost advertisers on his hour, and that has had to impact the bottom line. Problem is, his ratings are good, so they can't yank him for that reason. Now they have a ginned up complaint they can use to dismiss him, and it allows them to keep mainstreaming the Bircher madness, but without the rodeo clown to make it a mockery.

I think what Fox is afraid of is one of Beck's nutcase minions actually taking a shot at President Obama and the assassination attempt being linked to their network. That would send their morning show "Fox & Friends" into a spiral of heads exploding as they tried to find a way to "report" it and still make the president look bad.

It would also send every advertiser they have running for the hills. "Keep our money, but don't air our fuckin' commercials again or we'll sue you to high heaven."

Banning racists, bigots and others of the same ilk hardly comes close to banning "everyone." The knuckle-draggers bleat like they do because they have a podium; they would never say such things in public, because they would be ridiculed, scorned and shunned. Taking their podium away is an excellent step that more moderators need to take in order to bitch-slap these troglodytes with the open palm of reality.

In short, the right to speak does not equate to the right to an audience.

A nuanced discussion on race by the Hot Air brain trust:

[Link: hotair.com...]

So John Conyers is racist?

[Link: hotair.com...]

Conyers is a racist uncle tom

[Link: hotair.com...]

Conyers is a RACIST!!!

Oh, wait…….

[Link: hotair.com...]

Just because he’s black, doesn’t mean he’s not a racist.

[Link: hotair.com...]

Hmm – might one wonder if black voters are racists who only consider the color of his skin?

[Link: hotair.com...]

The most troubling part of this post- the polling numbers for Obama among non-whites, and especially blacks.

The data gives two possible stories- either whites are hopelessly idiotic in their refusal to see Obama as the messiah that he is. Or, more likely, a massive majority of black Americans simply refuse to use critical thinking skills if the topic is someone who shares their basic general skin tone.

What other explanation can you possibly come up with?

Black Americans have been, historically, stubborn in following the advice of MLK when he talked about looking to content of one’s character instead of the color of their skin. This stubbornness has resulted in the worst president in a generation. I wish more black Americans were less likely to have such a knee jerk reaction when it comes to skin tone. It’s as if you need only mention someone is black, and you’ve got the backing of 90% of black Americans, no matter how inept the person is.

[Link: hotair.com...]

I was thinking along the lines of OJ Simpson…the black support there was huge, and it was based, no doubt, on his skin tone and little else.

Plus, democratic support for Obama is nowhere near the levels of black support.

No doubt, blacks are wed to the democratic party, and for the most part I think it comes down to what the polling data consistently shows- massive support among blacks for welfare programs. Any time a politician promises to pay your way through yet another welfare program, unfortunately blacks tend to support the program. The data shows that is a consistent among black voters.

I do think that there is usually just an obsession with skin color for a majority of blacks. The so-called black leaders of this country (Sharpton and Jackson mainly) enjoy support from most blacks (if the polls are to be believed).

No matter- it all spells trouble. I don’t know anything that even comes close in comparison- the seeming refusal to actively participate in the dialogue, just giving what seems to be blind loyalty to one side of the issue.

///

I realize the Conyers part is what passes for wit among the HA denizens but the endless, "We're being victimized by minorities playing the Race Card"-shtick that it's an example of, is really tiresome.

1) what's to stop the evil government from confiscating the gold, too;
2) are marauding hordes of cannibals likely to be bought off, or is he suggesting gold has some sort of supernatural properties like garlic vs. vampires, for instance?

In the Twilight Zone scenario where there electricity is off, social order has completely collapsed, and everyone around you is either dead, a loot-crazed government agent, or a brain-eating cannibal (and Burgess Meredith just broke his glasses), somehow I don't think anyone is going to be thinking, "Whew, it's a damn good thing I have all this gold."

re: #34 Charles

This one is from last week but I had to include it (racism, race war, conspiracy theories):

[Link: hotair.com...]

From my first viewing of Obama in the Black Liberation Church of his race-mongering Reverend, well, I’ve had a deep feeling in my gut that this Great Nation is headed for some dark days that are going to end in bloodshed. Apparently I’m not the only “whacko-nutjob” in the crowd. However, I don’t see any revolution coming I see more of a civil/race war on the horizon.

I find it pathetic that every time I see a new clip of this whitey-hating Czar disseminating his racial hatred to a crowd, it’s always a crowd of white people. They love him! How many millions of mindless people do we have that can’t see racial hatred beneath all the talk of green revolution? Why don’t we ever see him talking his revolution to crowds of blacks? He doesn’t need to because the majority of blacks are in his pocket ready to ride with him to the Reparations Office to get their check from the white devil, and most of those wouldn’t mind putting a cap in the devil’s a$$ on the way.

The fact that Obama has this man as an adviser is truly scary. What’s scarier, though, and what I do every time I think of a possible violent upheaval is check out the youtube vids of gun confiscation during Katrina. It’s a very sad eye opener to watch police and national guards do the gestapo march on law-abiding citizens. For all the talk I’ve heard over the years from gun owning people about never giving up their guns to tyranny, including most of my family and dearest friends, not one gun owner went out in a blaze of glory when confronted with this unconstitutional weapons confiscation. I ain’t knocking them, because they were good people who were scared to death. Who wouldn’t be? Indeed, these times only get scarier..

Sorry, CJ, I'm obviously no vitriol spewing hate monger. However I do believe that "free speech", as it's quoted is prevalent in lots of upset and angry other places.

It's truly up to the people who read and reply to make the real stance. If one bans everyone, one bans every opposition and thus negates the entire "other", perse.

Depends who's doing the banning.

Government censorship almost universally causes more harm than good, but if you're providing a soapbox, it's reasonable to expect some form of... let's be more polite than they deserve and say "quality control". The racist attitudes mentioned contribute nothing to intelligent conversation, and should be explicitly rejected by anyone who wants to be taken seriously.

Exploding Gum

A forensic examination established that the chewing gum was covered with an unidentified chemical substance, thought to be some type of explosive material.

The student apparently had a bizarre habit of chewing gum after dipping it into citric acid, Russian news agency Ria Novosti said.

Officers found both citric acid packets and a similar-looking unidentified substance, believed to be some kind of explosive material, on a table near the body, the agency continued.

Investigators suspect that the student simply confused the packets and put gum covered with explosive material into his mouth.

Forensic experts were to travel from Kiev to investigate the substance, as local authorities feared it may explode if transported.

It is a telling marker of the ideological cohesiveness and extremism of this core group of philanthropies that three of the five founding members, Joseph Coors, David Koch and Harry Bradley, were members and financial supporters of the John Birch Society. The Scaife foundations, headed by Richard Mellon Scaife, are also involved, albeit in less direct ways.

In the past 20 years this core group of funders has, by many reports, built and strategically linked an impressive array of almost 500 think tanks, centers, institutes and "concerned citizens groups" both within and outside of the academy. It is particularly telling to observe the funding sources of these organizations during the first 10-15 years of their existence, when their ideological identities were being established. A small sampling of these entities include the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute, the Manhattan Institute, the Hoover Institution, the Claremont Institute, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, Middle East Forum, Accuracy in Media, and the National Association of Scholars, as well as Horowitz's Center of the Study of Popular Culture.

But the Dow went up 65%.

WHAAA?

Not defending gold here, but be honest in your comparison. Let's go back one year from yesterday's close:

DJIA:
12/8/2008 8934.1797
12/8/2009 10285.9697

That's about a 15% increase.

I'm guessing you're referring to the percentage change of the 52 week range (that is, you bought on the absolute low and sold on the absolute high) which was 6,440.08 to 10,549.04, or about 64%.

If you do that with gold...

Gold (using the CBOE in this example - ^GOX)
12/8/2008 108.05
12/8/2009 232.69

That's about a 115% increase.

Also have a look at the last ten years:
DJIA went from 11405 to 13522 - about 18.5%
^GOX went from 43.24 to 209.55 - about 385%

Just trying to keep things in perspective, and I'm NOT endorsing gold as an investment vehicle.

Dr Strangelove is just full of great quotes that can be used to twig onto various hang-ups folk have with politics or the media...

[after learning of the Doomsday Machine]
President Merkin Muffley: But this is absolute madness, Ambassador! Why should you *build* such a thing?

Ambassador de Sadesky: There were those of us who fought against it, but in the end we could not keep up with the expense involved in the arms race, the space race, and the peace race. At the same time our people grumbled for more nylons and washing machines. Our doomsday scheme cost us just a small fraction of what we had been spending on defense in a single year. The deciding factor was when we learned that your country was working along similar lines, and we were afraid of a doomsday gap.

President Merkin Muffley: This is preposterous. I've never approved of anything like that.

Ambassador de Sadesky: Our source was the New York Times.

And given that the Cold War is inherently not funny, it's the blackest sort of comedy.

I think you raise some good points. We have First Amendment protections here, and Ace is certainly able to allow whatever he likes at his site. What it takes is people speaking out against it, like Charles has been doing. When they lose support in dollars and influence, it will be a good thing. The best way to have them show their vileness is to let them show their vileness. I think one of the reasons they attack Charles so viciously is because the criticisms are having an impact on the bottom line.

Yes. There was an interesting study a while ago that showed something fairly obvious: associating with people who share your ideology makes everyone express opinions more ideologically extreme than when they're in a group with others-- in other words, a mixed group of liberals and conservatives expresses opinions that are moderate, whereas if you split them apart the liberals expressed more moonbatty opinions and the conservatives more wingnutty ones.

Add to that the other effect of the internet-- it allows communities to be created that didn't exist before. This has both good aspects, as when all the sufferers of a rare disease find each other and share information and support-- and bad aspects, as when racists or pedophiles find each other.

Behaviour that might once have been seen by the individual as forbidden or extreme (molesting a child, as opposed to just fantasising about it) starts to become acceptable to the individual, seen as normal--- because he or she now has a community supporting it.

That's yet another reason why site owners have a responsibility to control the comments on their site, and yet another reason why cesspits like HotAir need to be called out for permitting systematic patterns of hatespeech.

The leader of a British extremist movement stepped up his organisation’s ‘anti-war’ activism with a protest outside Parliament today, telling journalists that the leaders of Britain’s three main political parties are ‘men of blood’ and that the war in Afghanistan is ‘illegal’.

This man is a convicted criminal who has in the past praised Ayatollah Khomeini, sought funding from Colonel Gaddaffi, and denied the Holocaust.

Read about the protest here.

Unfortunately google's cache doesn't link directly to the article itself but a page which contains it. The correct link (leftmost column, 3rd story down) reads : "Chairman Nick Griffin Holds Demonstration Against Brown’s Illegal War"

Thing to remember is, guys like Ace buy their webspace from somewhere. Or they rent space at a datacenter. Nothing wrong with letting their providers know you won't do business with people who host such garbage, etc. In my mind, it's analogous to a landlord making sure there isn't a crack house on his property. Especially when they're calling for violence, uprising against the government, etc.

Not sure how effective such a boycott would be, but its something.

The best way to have them show their vileness is to let them show their vileness. I think one of the reasons they attack Charles so viciously is because the criticisms are having an impact on the bottom line.

I'd add a few things.

Most of Charles' critics are one hit wonders. That is, the successes they have had are predicated on the acceptance of their blogs. As time goes on and in order to stay 'on top', they have to behave in a more outrageous manner to fend off their competitors.

CJ found success long before he blogged. His music and his software development talents and achievements preceded his successes as a blogger. Consequently, he has certain freedoms many of his critics do not. He can reject what he finds reprehensible and hypocritical and not be a failure. LGF is not his sole source of income and as noted, his other successes continue.

CJ doesn't have to pander to a crowd that demands they feed them cake or dance to their tune as many other bloggers do. Further, in pandering, a lot of LGF critics take the easy road. They don't have to be consistent. They can go whichever way the wind blows- and they know CJ will call them on it.

I believe that more than anything else enrages a lot of his critics.

Increasingly all communications are carried over what we'd think of as the internet anyways. So I'd say its extremely reasonable to assume that the NSA and the FBI are essentially monitoring everything.

Well. Isn't this good news! (Sure.):

Obama administration predicts $30B loss on auto bailout

From the article:

"The real news is the projected loss came down to $30 billion from $44 billion," Sperling said, noting that auto sales have improved ahead of what many analysts had forecast. The administration still holds out hope that if things improve, the administration could still recover more.

Phew! And:

The Treasury Department has loaned $50 billion to General Motors, and swapped all but $6.7 billion of it for a 61 percent majority stake in the automaker. In order for taxpayers to be repaid fully, GM's stock would have to be worth far more than current estimates when the company goes public as early as next year.

The government owns 61% of GM. The union also has a significant share. Question: Given the above, who would possibly be interested in investing in GM when it does go "public"?

And New York's Governor says "We're $@^ked because we're out of money".

I kid you not. The governor and everyone in the legislature was busy spending like there's no tomorrow even as their cash cow of Wall Street melted down. They ran up a huge deficit in just a few months time for the current fiscal year; Paterson says the deficit is $3.2 billion; Legislature enacted a deficit reduction plan of $2.7 billion. The state comptroller says the deficit is $4 billion.

Everyone is hoping that tax revenues will magically appear.

Fiscal responsibility is out the window. Paterson says that the state crossed the financial Rubicon. Sorry, it did that the moment the state proposed a budget larger than last year even as all signs were pointing to a massive shortfall in revenues.

The Legislature is dominated by the Democrats and the Governor is a Democrat.

You know, Twilight Zone barely got made in the 50's and 60's. Rod Sterling was so far ahead of his time (hehe) that I don't think the show would survive the 21st century. Funny that.

Depends on a number of factors that are simply unknown at this point: the offering price, the company's health and plans, it's balance sheet and many others.

On the one hand, they've shed a good deal of debt, giving them a competitive advantage over Ford and most of the imports. On the other, they're saddled with old-school, inefficient middle management from top to bottom, are still extremely top-heavy with white collar workers, and have a product line that lacks appeal and is far too broad and redundant.

Also, IPOs are typically priced at fair value or above when they hit the street, especially with a company like GM that will be researched and analyzed to death prior to issue. So jumping in at ground zero isn't going to get you any bargains.

I'll leave if for the institutional investors, who will love it for it's stability and size. Maybe in a year, it'll be worth examining.

Looking at the still photos and the videos, the stills are obviously time lapse exposures. The spiral effect could therefore easily be from a slightly rotating beam of light and the effect could be generated from light high clouds and or mist illuminated by what is called an Iridium Flare. That is a reflection from a solar panel on an Iridium satellite which is not an uncommon event and can be quite spectacular if conditions are right. There is a website that can predict the visibility path of Iridium Flares, if one knows the location and time of the event it could be verifiedverified. The article doesn't state the time.

I saw a fantastic biography about the Planet of the Apes. You know SERLING (I said Sterling... gold, sterling whatever :p) wrote the original screenplay altho it was finished by others. Well I didn't know this. I've always been an Apes fan, even if the sequels were cheap and shoddy. Watched the TV series when I was a kid and the read the books too! But never realized Serling's involvement.

Makes sense. The Apes series was all about racism, prejudices, war. All the best of Serling for sure. In fact, Serling said he was censored for writing about these things outright. He had to "disguise" them in SciFi. Serling once said (and I'm paraphrasing a bit), "A martian can make a political statement that no Democrat or Republican can make." Cool stuff.

Okay, so Rod thinks gay sex should be banned and is 'deviate'. What might he consider appropriate sexual behaviour, hmmm?

Jetton was charged with felony assault Monday after a girlfriend alleged that he had beaten and choked her during a recent sexual encounter, in which she failed to use a mutually agreed upon "safe word." How ironic would that be? The administration - during a trashed economy - pulls a sleight of hand to replace federal vehicles (whether actually needed or not) to shore up GM in an election year. So, the stock price goes up a bit, while in reality the move is just more stimulus money in disguise. It's astounding.

I'm OK with 1, as long as we add 'to American Christians, and their friends and loved ones'.

2 is inappropriate, and completely ridiculous.

3 is dumb, and could be replaced with, 'wishes all Americans of Christian faith a joyous holiday.'

Are they making Cantor do this because he's the Jew in the Republican Caucus?

Iridium flares near Tromso, Norway, December 9

I have seen a few of these. The first was directly overhead and I really thought for a second that I was in that Travolta movie Phenomenon, but soon I noticed I wasn't any smarter.

The other one was watching what I thought was airplane headlights shining through light haze in a very bright beam (we have Tampa airport not far away) and it lasted a good two minutes, but I could never see or hear the plane and even thought it might be in trouble as the beam was pointing down towards me at an shallow angle. Then it disappeared. I was stunned, until I found this website and verified the flare at that time and place.

Glenn Beck does it. Alex Jones does it. I'm getting really god damn sick of this fear based gold peddling.

Gold is the place to be and it's a security trade in the face of uncertain economic times - however the selling of that fear based position to the general public worsens the plight of the economy generally and the cycle starts again.

The conflict of interests involved is unconcienable and should involve the SEC or appropriate financial regulator.

Oh, you need to expand your horizons. One of my favorite pizzas to make is smoked duck breast, carmelized onions, and gruyer...just a little olive oil underneath for a sauce...

You all are driving me crazy! I am drooling all over my keyboard!

You know, back on topic, I've always wanted to see a graph of gold prices vs. gold merchant ad buys on the radio. I'm convinced that the gold sellers are NOT trying to get new clients when the price is low.

MY biggest Glum Beck complaint is that he seems to have Net Neutrality confused with some kind of Fairness Doctrine, and so he's Agin' it. Drives me right up the wall.

The supply of gold has kind of dried up. Mines are running out of good ore. What used to happen when gold prices spiked was that mines cranked up the output and that drove the price back down. Not this time. So Beck is gaming the system, but there does seem to be some evidence that the law of supply and demand also points to higher gold prices.
