Rape is rape, no matter who it happens to.
The cited article is about juvenile offenders being raped by staff in detention facilities. In other words, rape of children, by adults charged with their care.
I would hope that the difference you see is based on rape in such circumstances being even more odious than it is out on the street.

Either I didn't communicate well or you misunderstood. I don't condone rape of any form. Anywhere, any time. However, that being said, there IS a difference between a civilian being raped (has huge amount of sympathy from me) vs. a felon (which also has sympathy but not as much as the civilian being raped).

Agreed. Just because someone is in prison doesn't mean that they're suddenly fair game for rape or any other crime being committed against them.

So what? That it takes carriers like AT&T several weeks or months to transfer funds to their destination has no impact at all on relief efforts. The Red Cross has money and other resources at it's disposal right now, and is able to lay it's hands on as much more as may be needed in a moment's notice. That the money this costs will eventually be reimbursed through other's generosity is all that matters. Timeliness simply isn't an issue in this situation.

I did, bottleneck: is a phenomenon where the performance or capacity of an entire system is limited by a single or limited number of components or resources.
In this case being AT&T's lack of fluid fund transfers. Hopefully they will learn and change their protocol so in the future it's a lot more efficient.

re: #51 ethics
The US is being criticized for not operating the airport the way critics want; the infrastructure simply can't handle the traffic once the ATC was restored by the US (not that it could do so before the quake). Some planes were being turned away or diverted because the airport is overwhelmed with planes trying to land with relief; and there's no timetable on when the port facilities will be reopened. That would let loose the bottleneck of relief since ships can carry in far more equipment and supplies than planes alone.
Some criticized that the US was favoring getting its own out of Haiti than doing more for the Haitians and getting other countries aid workers in. Doctors Without Borders claimed one of its planes was diverted even though there was an understanding with the US and UN to let the plane land.
There is no coordination because there isn't anyone to do the coordinating on such a massive scale - the UN top officials in Haiti were killed; and the government is simply incapable of doing much of anything, so it's falling to the US even though the US can only coordinate with others - and the UN has reportedly called on some medical teams to pull back from their field hospitals because of fears of looting and rioters, which got Gen. Honore (Ret.) to slam 'em for their incompetence and inability to provide medical care.
Through it all, the US is doing quite a bit of the heavy lifting, and will continue to do so long into the future - there isn't anyone else who can (or will).

Full of compassion this morning, I see.
Look, this was an easy way for people to donate without having to disclose financial info over the Internet. Great particularly for the youth, as it tapped into their comfort zone. A ten dollar donation added to a cell phone bill was a brilliant move in my estimation.

You mistake disagreement with "anger" and "bashing"
For me to be "angry" you would have had to personally harm me. You didn't
If I were to "bash" you, I wouldn't be responding to you with my opinions and suggestions, just bile and vile!

When I was drinking, and I lived in Houston, there was this truck stop across the highway from my apartment. On Sundays, if you knew the routine, you would go back to the 3.2 beer cooler, take out a six pack, go up to the front and slap a 10 dollar bill on the counter and just leave. No questions asked, don't stop to talk, don't even wait in line, just toss that ten at the employee behind the counter and hightail it.
Sunday beer.

U.S. Missiles Target Militants in Pakistan
Missiles fired by a U.S. pilotless drone at a suspected militant hideout in Pakistan's tribal region Sunday killed at least 12 people in the latest attack targeting al Qaeda and Taliban sanctuaries along the Afghan border.
The drone shot four missiles into a compound in the Shaktoi region on the border between South and North Waziristan, Pakistani security and local officials said. It was the third raid in the area since Thursday. Three foreign militants were believed to be among the dead. The identity of the victims wasn't available.
It was the tenth drone strike in Waziristan this year, marking a significant increase in the U.S. campaign against al Qaeda and Taliban strongholds. More than 65 people have been killed in the unprecedented burst of attacks.
Last week, a drone strike killed Jamal Saeed Abdul Rahim, one of most wanted man on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's list of terrorists. He had been involved in the 1986 hijacking of an American airliner.
The drone strikes have become more frequent since the suicide attack on Dec. 30 by a Jordanian double agent on a U.S. forward base in eastern Afghanistan that killed seven operatives of the Central Intelligence Agency. Al Qaeda was believed to be behind the attack.
The Shaktoi region is where Taliban fighters fleeing the Pakistani military offensive in South Waziristan are believed to have taken refuge. It was hit twice on Thursday by CIA-operated drones, killing 15 suspected militants. Hakimullah Mehsud, the top commander of the Pakistani Taliban, was said to be the main target of those attacks.
A local government official has said Mr. Mehsud was seriously wounded in the raid. But in an audio tape message released on Saturday, the militant leader denied the claim that he was in the area during the attack.

I heard about that. It's awesome that he chose to stay despite the danger. According to what he wrote at CNN, his film crew got their baptism by fire as a makeshift medical staff to help him out.
Recall that Gupta had at one point been tapped to be Surgeon General of the US by President Obama, but Gupta declined, saying it would keep from practicing medicine.
And he's been vindicated in saying no. If he'd been Surgeon General, there's no way he'd have been on the ground in Haiti to help anyone.

True. The problem is that once you set up a mechanism where content is free, or where all that's required is registration for access, turning around and charging a fee to get the exact same information doesn't work.
If they'd gone with the WSJ model from the start, where some articles are free, but the more in-depth stuff costs money, the NYT might be in a better position to make a case for charging their online readers. Instead, they've had a free site for years and their one experiment at charging folks failed miserably because their readers refused to go along with it. I just don't see how it's going to work for them now.

The only way it can work is if most sites are also charging. WSJ works well because it is a niche publication instead of general news. But again, I think this will be standard in the future. If you want the news online, you are going to have to pay for it in someway. (I like the pay-per-click model. Charge people a very small amount per story they read instead of a monthly subscription rate. I think that can work.)

Oh, I agree that it will be a standard in the future. I just don't think it's possible for sites that already post their content online for free like the NYT to then turn around and post the same content for a fee. People have options, and if the choices are paying the NYT to access what had previously been free content and going to another site with comparable stuff that won't charge the reader a fee, most folks will go elsewhere.
If a site has a pay-to-read model from the start, then folks are more amenable to paying for online content. If you give all your content away for years then expect money after the fact, readers aren't going to be all that receptive.
