It’s been a week overflowing with right wing xeno- and homo-phobia, and here’s an exceptional example posted at YouTube a few days ago, as the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer expounds on his theory that Hitler and the Nazis were homosexuals (not the “effeminate” kind, but the special Third Reich kind apparently), and this was the factor that allowed them to be so savage and brutal. While at the same time they ignore the fact that Hitler had Röhm executed, and then reduced the SA's power. This was done for two reasons:

1: To reassure the Army that it would remain the primary ground combat arm of Germany and that radical changes to its leadership would not happen.

2. To remove those Hitler felt disloyal and advance the SS, which Hitler trusted fully.

The advancement of the SS was ultimately to undermine the Army, which had made a devil's bargain supporting Hitler.

The often ridiculous laws of parts of Europe, for example Tsarist Russia which then included most of Poland, forbad emigration without various permissions which were next to impossible to obtain, so many people left without.

Our turn of the century immigrant ancestors (mine for sure!) were very often "legal" not because they waited 15 years and filled out all the right paperwork, but because the laws were a lot looser then.

OT: BTW I guess I need to apologize for being so damn cranky last night, I was stressed out, still not a legitimate reason for taking it out on the people here, sorry. :(

Mom had surgery on her right shoulder first thing this morning, for a compressed nerve and reduced blood flow to her right arm. I am already a "full time home healthcare aide" for Dad, the idea of Mom being laid up too has had me kinda freaked out.

Anyway the surgery apparently went very well according to the doctor but we will not know for at least 48 hours (and as long as three weeks) if she regains any more function in her right arm. Repeated cortisone shots didn't help, so relieving it by surgery was the only possible solution.

If your a praying sort please include Moms rapid recovery in your missives, if not at least wish me luck. I am now the only driver along with doing all the cooking cleaning, dish washing, laundry, shopping, and pretty much everything else.

Talked the politics of white retirees selling their homes in more expensive parts of the country, moving to Arizona where land is plentiful and the weather agrees with them, and creating an increasingly hostile political and nativist environment on all fronts for the latinos (legal and illegal) living there.

John Finn, the last, living WW II Medal of Honor winner died today. Here's what he did to earn it at Pearl Harbor:

In 2009 Finn explained one of the first things he did was take control of a machine gun from his squadron's painter. "I said, 'Alex, let me take that gun'...knew that I had more experience firing a machine gun than a painter."

Finn then found a movable platform used for gunnery training, attached the .50 caliber machine gun, and pushed the platform into an open area, from which he had a clear view of the attacking aircraft. He fired on the Japanese planes for the next two hours, even after being seriously wounded, until the attack had ended. In total, he received 21 distinct wounds, including a bullet through the foot and an injury which caused him to lose feeling in his left arm.

"I got that gun and I started shooting at Jap planes," Finn said in a 2009 interview. "I was out there shooting the Jap planes and just every so often I was a target for some," he said, "in some cases, I could see [the Japanese pilots'] faces."

Despite wounds, he returned to the hangars later that day, after receiving medical treatment, and helped arm the surviving American planes.

For these actions, Finn was formally presented with the Medal of Honor on September 14, 1942, by Admiral Chester Nimitz. The ceremony occurred in Pearl Harbor on board the USS Enterprise (CV-6).

Which side's wackos are worse would actually be an interesting discussion. I think that harping on only the bigotry on the far right, and holding it up as an example of what the right wing is, is giving a skewed picture of what conservatives stand for. I would be curious if anyone knows any poll numbers as to what percentage of conservatives, or even what percentage of the religious right agrees with these kind of statements. I know this won't be a popular comment, but I am uneasy with using this kind of stuff to tar so large a group.

The problem, Effy, is that the main voices on the Right (the McCains, the McConnells, the Boehners, the Grahams, etc.) are afraid to disagree with the crazy fucks at the AFA or FRC because their followers are almost exclusively Republicans...so yes, they're complicit in this kind of idiocy.
