What I’m listening to right now:
I love you I’ve a drowning grip on your adoring face
I love you my responsibility has found a place
Beside you and strong warnings in the guise of gentle words
Come wave upon me from the wider family net absurd
“You’ll take care of her, I know it, you will do a better job”
Maybe, but not what she deserves
Props to whoever knows what this is.

Fireworks in the distance
illustrating a freedom borne
by those beyond our seas
yet fighting for a freedom seen
from a distance, yet known at home.
A distant blast heard
is a reminder of a blast
not heard too close
because of that sacrifice
held close, yet so far away.
(A short if incomplete poem elicited by fireworks in the distance)
G’nite gang.

One more from Japan, from 1969. Pretty enough song, though what’s strikes me here is how clear the male singer is… in case you haven’t noticed, male Japanese speakers tend to be quite different from females, both in the nature of what is said but also in the sounds. The common male sounds tend to be quite muffled and I have a very difficult time catching their syllables…
Anyway, making a long story short, here is a male singer with very clean articulation (for my listening comprehension practice.) Also, he walks out with a guitar but doesn’t really make use of it - a prop? Finally, I’m fascinated by the fashion statement of the mike stand - I’ve seen similar in some other Japanese videos from decades ago, but I’m not sure what to make of it.

LOL! This is what I said to my old man this evening when my younger brother and I were playing a gig at a redneck bar tonight. I played bass and my brother played guitar. Dear ol’ Dad was a Singing Sergeant for 11 years in D.C. with the AF Band. He’s retired and old yes, it was too loud for him, he left after the first set. He was glad to see his kids who were raised around music were playing out after all those years of noise in the basement. Thanks for the years of music Dad, your kids are carrying on the family tradition, enjoy your retirement.

Couldn’t sleep. Maybe I went beddy too early last night, or, many things to clear away before driving to Sou Cal early monday. “Dances With Wolves” is on tv but I know the dialogue from memory. Nevertheless, enjoy the scenery.

I keep getting told we’re getting all our bailout money back “with interest!”. If that’s true then why is this necessary?
Obama calls for bank tax as next step in reform
reuters.com
Obama wants to slap a 0.15 percent tax on the liabilities of the biggest U.S. financial institutions to recoup the costs to taxpayers of the financial bailout.“We need to impose a fee on the banks that were the biggest beneficiaries of taxpayer assistance at the height of our financial crisis — so we can recover every dime of taxpayer money,” Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.
I guess making sure free checking went the way of the dinosaurs wasn’t a good enough way to stick it to taxpayers in an election year so lets go ahead and raise more taxes that will be paid by everyone but banking institutions. Good plan. Man am I glad we elected a brainiac.

I keep saying that political discourse is no worse today than it has ever been. It’s always been rough and in just our history it’s been much, much rougher. Good story in the WSJ highlighting that fact:
For sheer verbal savagery, the founding era may have surpassed anything seen today. Despite their erudition, integrity, and philosophical genius, the founders were fiery men who expressed their beliefs with unusual vehemence. They inhabited a combative world in which the rabble-rousing Thomas Paine, an early admirer of George Washington, could denounce the first president in an open letter as “treacherous in private friendship…and a hypocrite in public life.” Paine even wondered aloud whether Washington was “an apostate or an imposter; whether you have abandoned good principles, or whether you ever had any.”
…..
Although not parties in the modern sense, these embryonic factions—Hamiltonian Federalists and Jeffersonian Republicans—generated intense loyalty among adherents. Both sides trafficked in a conspiratorial view of politics, with Federalists accusing the Republicans of trying to import the French Revolution into America, while Republicans tarred the Federalists as plotting to restore the British monarchy. Each side saw the other as perverting the true spirit of the American Revolution.
It started off brutal and since they’ve stopped beating and shooting each other it has actually become more pleasant. I don’t understand the urge for people to welcome a return to the 70’s style politicians where they ganged up on the electorate. I’d much prefer to have them at each others throats than getting together and trying to figure out the best ways to screw us.

Borrowing doesn’t work either:
chicagotribune.com
Crunch enough data and you can write lists on which any state would be proud to see its name: Best in Job Growth, Best Climate for Employers, Best Public Finances. Illinois, though, would wallow far down on any of those lists. Instead, Illinois now is a fixture on a list relentlessly updated by CMA, a London-based credit information company. CMA’s “Sovereign Risk Monitor” ranks “the world’s most volatile sovereign debt issuers” — governments so threadbare they may not make good on their bonds.
Friday night in London, these were the governments worldwide that CMA ranked as having the highest percentage probabilities of defaulting on payments to bondholders:
Greece: 67.93 percent
Venezuela: 58.05
Argentina: 48.15
Pakistan: 38.80
Ukraine: 35.69
Iraq: 29.29
Dubai/Emirate of: 29.20
Illinois/State of: 27.35
California/State of: 27.00
Portugal: 25.11
There’s more than humiliation to ranking worse than left-for-dead California (and not much better than recuperating Iraq). The financial press has reported in recent days that bond buyers are so concerned about this state’s reliability that they’re demanding higher rates of interest from Illinois. From Illinois taxpayers, really. That’s one costly result of Illinois’ lazy political culture of overspending and overborrowing: We citizens aren’t merely drowning in debt that our leaders incurred — and that we and our descendants must repay. Bond rating firms also have been downgrading their estimation of Illinois’ willingness to discipline its finances. Illinois is perceived as such a risk of default that we’re having to squander millions in additional interest payments to get people to buy our bonds.

Especially if you don’t have to hire outside workers and can use family to reduce overhead.
I am reminded of the story of a Korean dry cleaner. Never took a vacation, never took a day off. 7 days a week. Someone asked him “Why don’t you take a vacation?” He replied, “In America? Every day is vacation.”
Love that story.
That’s the first I heard it and love it also. Here’s another story:
A young Greek immigrant asked for and got a job in a small lighting company in LA area. That first month of employment he slept in the alley adjacent. Becoming aware of this the owner suggested he sleep in the warehouse with the portable lights (occasionally used for outdoor movie shoots when fortunate enough to land a contract) thinking he could also act as night watchman. This he did and used this time to become very familiar with the variety of portable lights, their uses and capabilities. After 25 years the Greek immigrant now owns that company.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Ohio Democratic Party tried unsuccessfully this week to get information on all people licensed to carry concealed weapons in the Buckeye State.
The state party sent letters to Ohio’s 88 sheriffs requesting the names and addresses of permit holders and the dates the licenses were issued. Ohio has about 211,000 permit holders
The Democrats intended to target people who support the Second Amendment — the constitutional right to bear arms — with campaign information, said party spokesman, Seth Bringman.

A mystery for the ages: Why doesn’t the titmouse have tits?
1540s, “any small animal or object” (as in compound forms such as titmouse, tomtit, etc.); also used of small horses. Similar words in related senses are found in Scandinavian (cf. Icel. tittr, Norw. tita “a little bird”), but the connection and origin are obscure; perhaps, as OED suggests, the word is merely suggestive of something small. Used figuratively of persons after 1734, but earlier for “a girl or young woman,” usually in deprecatory sense of “a hussy, minx” (1590s). Tit for tat (1550s) is possibly an alteration of tip for tap “blow for blow,” from tip (v.3) “tap” + tap “touch lightly.”

Vice President Joe Biden was at a custard shop in Milwaukee for a little photo op plus a cone of the shop’s signature custard dessert. Biden also got a little advice.

But much of the post-explosion inept response is Obama’s responsibility. It was BP’s rig that blew up and sank, but it was Obama’s federal apparatus that failed to recognize and react to a massive problem that would grow only bigger with inattention. And it was Obama’s scattershot, improvisational response that made him look more inept each day.
Obama’s problem is his background. He has never run anything except a campaign; never operated a company, never been a CEO. He cannot lead because he is not a leader. He’s an academic seminar facilitator. Notice his frequent references to “…experts in academia…” and his energy secretary Steven Chu who “…won a Nobel prize.” Obama is a collegiate propeller-head most comfortable in a room full of other propeller-heads. Solving problems is not their goal; talking about solving problems is. The meeting becomes the solution, an end in itself.

For sure… I wrote a number of “tongue in cheek” informative essays about France for a travel web site in 2001, and here was my entry on language…
We have heard so much about the language barrier between the French and the rest of the world. But after my first 5 days in France, I suspect that the only barrier anyone has between the culture of one nation toward another is fear.
I am sitting here in the Chateau reading “Le Journal De Saone-et-Loire.” See that word “Journal,” it means newspaper, pretty simple.
Other words from the paper jump out at me. Reduction, voyages, transport, grand, gala, solitaire, France, sanctions, confrontation, nature and so on and so on.
In the same paper I see English words peppered though out the pages. Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Macdonald’s, Colgate, Marlboro, Winston, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the list goes on.
France has given us many of the words that we use on a daily basis and we have given them loan words that represent American consumerism. That seems like a fair trade… language barrier, I don’t think so.

No, it is not Obama’s responsibility, and he should not be getting shit for this.
You are correct; BP’s fault it happened, and BP is responsible for the clean-up and the claims payment, both of which they’ve done a poor job with.
However, there are legitimate criticisms to make as to how the Obama administration is handling this, the biggest one being the blanket 6-month moratorium.
I can understand how the blanket moratorium might be considered to be a good idea. But it isn’t, and the experts who signed that report have come out and said so, the moratorium is NOT a good idea. For one thing, it forced everybody to immediately seal the wells they were in the process of drilling, meaning everybody had to immediately perform the exact same activity that BP was engaged in when the well blew.
For another, it is punishing companies that have done no wrong.
After the blowout, all the wells out there underwent an immediate inspection; a couple of minor flaws were discovered and fixed. All the other inspections showed no violations. Why are these companies being punished?
But as to the blowout and the “fixing” of the leak and the clean-up - that is entirely on BP, and they’ve screwed up many facets of this process.

Here in one of the reasons the Dutch help was refused.
From the Financial Post link.
*snip*
“The voracious Dutch vessels, for example, continuously suck up vast quantities of oily water, extract most of the oil and then spit overboard vast quantities of nearly oil-free water. Nearly oil-free isn’t good enough for the U.S. regulators, who have a standard of 15 parts per million — if water isn’t at least 99.9985% pure, it may not be returned to the Gulf of Mexico.”
Fucking Idiots.

re: #246 reine.de.tout
Perhaps. But squabbling over who’s fault it is and who’s responsible has effectively kept anyone from actually doing much to ameliorate the effect of the spill.
It struck me this morning that a solid month elapsed between the initial explosion and the appearance of oil on neighboring beaches. The President has broad emergency powers, whose limits are admittedly unknown in a case like this, but which might well be tested. For example, during wartime the President (and/or Congress?) can effectively take control of the nation’s manufacturing capacity and direct it to military production; granted, the Navy probably doesn’t have the capacity or equipment to help with containment and recovery efforts (booms and skimmers) but all the other oil companies working in the Gulf and elsewhere offshore certainly do, and an Executive order directing the deployment of those resources - in place of or as an adjunct to the attempted production moratorium - likely would have made a significant difference. Streamlining procedures for deploying Coast Guard equipment up front, instead of a week after hearing their were regulatory problems in the way, is another example. Deploying the Army Corps of Engineers to assist in rapid construction of barrier berms off the Louisiana cost, another project debated, delayed and still not undertaken, is yet another.
Instead, the Administration has turned this into a political exercise, engaged in partisan finger-pointing and divisive threats instead of simply attempting to engage the problems at hand: shutting down the wellhead, containing as much oil as possible before it reaches sensitive shallow water areas, and cleaning up shorelines that have been directly affected.
We can - and certainly will - argue ‘til the cows come home over who is ultimately responsible. But waiting until BP’s responsibilities are established through the courts - or even through political fiat - is a process that will take months, possibly years. Everyone, from government to industry, needs to shut the fuck up and start dealing with the problem at hand, rather than arguing over who is to blame. In the end, we can send BP and whoever else is deemed responsible a bill for everyone’s time and effort, but that time and effort needs to be expended now, not later.

Taxes are lower, and job losses are less, the spending, not so much.
Changes to the rules for Flexible Spending Accounts have wiped out any paltry tax “cuts” I might have realized. Beginning January 1, the new rules for medical expenditures will increase my Federal tax burden by several hundred dollars per year.
And even the tax “cuts” aren’t really cuts for a large swath of the population, since the government managed to fuck up the withholding rules in their collective wisdom. Married folks, for the most part, are not having enough withheld from their paychecks, and as a result will wind up with a much smaller return, or owing taxes instead of receiving a refund.
Meanwhile, no politician has the balls to vote for even the tiniest spending decrease; no politician has any desire to curb their insatiable habit of spending far beyond the amount collected in tax revenues; and no politician will vote for any sort of meaningful tax increase, no matter how badly it is needed. And although I think this latter problem is somewhat shameful, it is also just as well, because any increase in revenue will only result in an even larger cacophony of grunting and squealing at the public trough and an ever-increasing orgy of deficit spending by all.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) accused Democrats Saturday of “kick[ing] the can down the road” on the deficit by failing to pass a comprehensive budget resolution.
Democrats are capping next year’s discretionary spending bills and setting a goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2015, but they won’t detail how they’ll reach that goal.
Ryan suggested Democrats want to spare their members another tough vote.
“With the political season upon us, Democratic leaders believe it’s better to take a pass than to pass a budget,” Ryan said in the weekly Republican address.
“This is a time to make tough choices, not run from them,” Ryan said. “To that end, Republicans on the Budget Committee have already identified $1.3 trillion in specific spending cuts we would implement right now to make Washington do more with less and help small businesses put people back to work.”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I have to get a chuckle out of this story.
The story itself isn’t funny, but the sourcing for it is.
Israel is alleged to be setting up a base in Saudi Arabia for a raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
MSNBC credits Israeli media outlets like Ha’aretz and the JTA for picking up the report, along with UPI (the wire service).
Where’d they get it?
FARS - the Iranian propaganda mouthpiece of the Iranian regime.
Iran claims Israel is building the base; Israeli media outlets report on it - and their reporting gains steam.
Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and intentions to use their nuclear infrastructure for weapons development needs to be confronted. Israel and the Saudis have a shared interest in stopping Iran’s nuclear program albeit for completely different reasons. But that doesn’t mean that the Saudis will do what Iran claims they’re doing. Iran is just pushing back against sanctions and using the Sunni-Shia schism to its advantage claiming that the House of Saud is in cahoots with the Zionists - undermining the Saud’s claims to protecting Mecca and Medina.

I don’t believe this is true. There are problems, difficulties, false starts, etc. But from what I’ve seen, people are trying their very best to get this thing handled.
It struck me this morning that a solid month elapsed between the initial explosion and the appearance of oil on neighboring beaches. The President has broad emergency powers, whose limits are admittedly unknown in a case like this, but which might well be tested. Deploying the Army Corps of Engineers to assist in rapid construction of barrier berms off the Louisiana cost, another project debated, delayed and still not undertaken, is yet another.
Those berms are being built. The problem was the permits for the berms. In addition, the CG did indeed keep “getting in the way” of certain boats sucking up the oil with vacuum hoses, and Obama stepped in and basically told the CG to get out of the way.
And I believe the other oil companies are helping with this. Very quietly though, this is BP’s problem and they don’t want ANY PART OF IT to stick to them.
No one can shut down that wellhead! If BP could have done it, it would have been done! The rest of it is BEING DONE.

Is California a sinking ship?
California and regional agencies have heaped so many taxes, rules and regulations on state businesses that the whole enterprise is about to founder, a group of businessmen told local Republican State Assemblymembers at a forum in Anaheim today.
“California is dead. The ship is sinking and it’s going down,” said Bill Taormina, whose family founded Anaheim Disposal and who now is chief executive of Clean City, Inc.
He complained about legislators more concerned about raising campaign contributions than solving business problems.
In addition, he questioned why California imposes stricter standards on businesses in the state, which drives up their costs, then purchases goods and services from out-of-state suppliers because they are cheaper.

It’s as aggravating now as it was (is) when people try to tell me I know NOTHING about Katrina and how that response came down.

Of course. But there is something to be said for a leader who is strong enough to keep rogue leaders (which erdogan appears to be) from feeling too comfortable about openly siding with our enemies. And if Obama were smart, he’d let turkey know that siding with iran in any meaningful way represents the type of behavior that threatens its NATO membership. Because it seems that turkey does not feel it’s cozying up to iran has any risks at all.
Under Bush, Iran was prancing around with folk dancers waving ‘uranium’ in little containers, but it was not seen by his supporters as a referendum on the effectiveness of George W. Bush. Nor should it have been.
Any analysis of international affairs that depends on a general idea of how the president is ‘seen’ by the world is basically wishful thinking.

If anyone is interested: Response Timeline
The rig sank on April 22. President Obama didn’t respond to the rig’s sinking until April 22. COINCIDENCE!!??!?!11ty I think not.
from wiki:
At 09:45 p.m. CDT April 20, 2010, during the final phases of drilling the exploratory well at Macondo,[46] a geyser of seawater erupted from the marine riser onto the rig, shooting 240 ft (73 m) into the air. This was soon followed by the eruption of a slushy combination of mud, methane gas, and water. The gas component of the slushy material quickly transitioned into a fully gaseous state and then ignited into a series of explosions and then a firestorm. Workers immediately attempted to activate the blowout preventer, but it failed.[47]At the time of the explosion, there were 126 crew on board; seven were employees of BP, 79 of Transocean, there were also employees of various other companies involved in the operation of the rig, including Anadarko, Halliburton and M-I Swaco.[48] Eleven workers were presumed killed in the initial explosion. The rig was evacuated, with numerous injured workers airlifted to medical facilities.[5] Support ships sprayed the rig with water in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to cool it and prevent it from capsizing. This was also intended to buy time in order to attempt to end the flow of oil and gas that were feeding the flames from coming up the riser pipe. If successful, this action would have reduced the flames and allowed special teams of firefighters to board the stricken rig and extinguish the remaining fire.[49]
After burning for approximately 36 hours, Deepwater Horizon sank on April 22, 2010. The remains of the rig were located resting on the seafloor approximately 5,000 ft (1,500 m) deep at that location, and about 1,300 ft (400 m) (quarter of a mile) northwest of the well.

Obama’s Drilling Moratorium Affecting More Than 33 Wells
very informative, along with some opinion
Unfortunately, the myth that shallow-water drilling isn’t being affected by the deepwater moratorium is rapidly being exposed as a cruel hoax. Not a single federal permit for shallow-water activity has been granted since the April 20 disaster. Some 16 shallow-water rigs that were all engaged before the incident are now sitting idle. In 30 days, that total will grow to 34 rigs. Approximately 50 offshore marine service and supply vessels are already out of work and that number will expand to over a hundred very soon. Louisiana’s shipbuilding industry—a critical player in our state’s economy—is bracing for a potentially devastating drop in new business orders and the likely cancellation of some existing contracts.

Yes.
This moratorium is a real issue, in my most humble opinion.
This is the biggest criticism I have of the administration’s reaction.
It is not necessary, AND the experts who signed the report Salazar used to justify the moratorium have said:
1) The report recommendations were changed after they signed it.
2) They do NOT believe the moratorium is necessary, and
3) The moratorium may increase danger, not reduce it.
I have a link somewhere; shall I find it?

iran has been our enemy for more than 30 years under administrations from carter to Obama. Turkey has been our “friend” for a lot longer than that, even if we have had some bumpy spells. There is a huge difference between iran and Turkey. I totally disagree that it is not important how the world perceives our President. It is CRITICALLY important whether our POTUS is seen as loyal and resolute or someone whose core values change according to the most recent news cycle. Afghanistan is a perfect eaxmple. Karzai is hedging his bets and moving closer to the taliban enemy because he may think that Obama is going to cut and run. And why do you suppose he feels that way? it may be because he has seen the actions and heard the words of our administration over the past 18 months and is not fully comfortable with them. As for what erdogan is being told behind closed doors, I’ll agree with you on that one. But regardless of the private messages, his actions on the world stage are what matters. if we are privately reading him the riot act and he is still openly defying us and siding with iran, I guess he doesn’t worry too much about the consequences of his open defiance.

There is so much that goes on in government behind closed doors, that for good reason, the public is not aware of. What is said in public is said with a particular audience in mind. It’s what you see happening in any congressional hearing - they all speak to their particular audience, not really to the person being questioned.

When there are too many patients to be admitted to the 600-bed facility, the emergency and waiting rooms get backed up. Critics had warned of such a problem when the new hospital’s size was decided.

“nearly oil-free” not being good enough is absolutely true.
It’s one of the standards that rigs are supposed to meet - during drilling and production operations, they cannot spill anything that leaves even the slightest “sheen” on the water, not even a cupful, without being subject to fines. My husband deals with these requirements every time he’s out on a rig.
There are no exceptions in the regs for “foreign” vessels, that I know of. Why would that be acceptable? There will still be oil in the water subject to coming up on the beaches, harming marine life. Why would we allow that?

Hello, Reine. I read a CBS news article where Gov. Jindal had not yet used the full amount of National Guard troops allotted to him. He responded in this article, but still did not address the original question about the Guard.CBS News
Have you read about this?
The “red tape and bureacracy”, I read as what seems to be ongoing difficulties with the Coast Guard. I posted here about how the CG stopped oil removal operations, going on close to shore (in probably 4 feet of water) to make sure the boats had the right number of life preservers. Those boats were shut down for a day, with the final 8 of the 16 held longer because the CG couldn’t figure out which boats had been inspected, which had not. It was a problem. Obama finally told the CG to make recommendations, but don’t shut down operations and that seems to have been resolved.
As to calling up the National Guard - I’m not sure what the purpose would be for Jindal to call up more of them. The National Guard fabricated the oil-removal equipment used by the boats I described above. BP has hired a lot of people to keep the beaches clean. In other words, I think it’s entirely likely that the reason Jindal has not called up more National Guard is that they are not needed at this time.

Ha! It is almost 20 years old. I will have to find it and scan it. Might be a project for another day! : )

I believe it was, the killing for sport.
Right, yes- thanks! Because eating after one has killed for sport is sooo different than eating after one has killed for business. Ah, that was a fun one.

Evidently, according to your statement, it would do more good than harm, add less that it would recover, and at this point less of any oil in the gulf is better.
The bottom line for me on this is that:
The oil will get cleaned up. If it takes two months longer without those ships than it would take with them, it still will get cleaned up, and the effects of the longer time it takes are really short-term, not worth the worry.
It’s more important, IMO, to focus on those decisions that will have extreme and long-term negative effects (the moratorium).

Not me.
Been there, done that.
It was fun. But I’m glad those days are over.

re: #414 reine.de.tout
“nearly oil-free” not being good enough is absolutely true.
It’s one of the standards that rigs are supposed to meet - during drilling and production operations, they cannot spill anything that leaves even the slightest “sheen” on the water, not even a cupful, without being subject to fines. My husband deals with these requirements every time he’s out on a rig. There are no exceptions in the regs for “foreign” vessels, that I know of. Why would that be acceptable? There will still be oil in the water subject to coming up on the beaches, harming marine life. Why would we allow that?
Because recovering the bulk of the oil, but maybe not quite all of it, would be a good thing at this point?
Those are excellent regulations as SOP. But not at the moment.

WTF???? Where’s my reply? Reine, my point is/was. It’s the choice between a little oil or a lot of oil hitting the beaches and marshes. Given the choice, I would go for the least amount of oil. This is not the time to demand 100% removal. Recover as much as you can as fast as you can.

Off topic - scored a whole side of pork belly this morning, and a little more than half of that is already in the ‘fridge, packed in a maple sugar dry cure for the next week or so, prior to smoking and conversion into a solid slab of sweet, sweet bacon.
Not quite certain what fate has in store for the remaining hunk, but I’m thinking of a braise; I just happen to have a freezer full of the dark chicken stock required that I made up last weekend.
Pork - God’s consolation prize for not being one of His chosen people.

This just isn’t an issue I can get excited about right now, to be honest.
There are more important things at stake, with longer-term effects. And instead of just throwing out any and all decisions made as something to criticize, we would be better off, IMO, focusing on the more important issues, which of course, I believe to be this moratorium issue.

Disagree. It’s much, much easier to recover the oil while it’s floating on water than it is to clean it off beaches, swamps and estuaries. The more that can be recovered early, the easier the longer term cleanup is going to be.

For “real” carbonara, you need to find a butcher who’ll whack you off a solid hunk of bacon, unsliced, that you can turn into lardons - roughly half-inch cubes of bacony goodness, fried to the point that they’re crispy on the outside but still chewy on the inside, then slowly simmered with the rest of the sauce. It’s completely different than using sliced bacon, and better in my opinion, although using “better” when describing bacon is sort of a pointless exercise.

We’re cautiously optimistic. It probably will still be horrible. But maybe not as horrible as we thought.
Thoughts too optimistic are sneaking into my brain, I’m having to nip them.

Wife just ran downstairs and told me that the boyfriend is gaining sensation in his thighs. Yesterday was a little in his torso… it is moving down…
Oh. My. Goodness.
Great news if it’s not imaginary. I hope it’s the real deal.

Or, in this case, ‘The President: Evil Villain or Incompetent Buffoon? You Decide!’
After eight years of that crap coming from the Left about the then-President, this is payback. As expected, the Democrats are shocked—shocked, I say!— that any media outlet would say such things.
Not that I’ve paid much if any attention to Fox News since about 2006.
