NAACP Releases New Statement: We Were Snookered by Fox News and Andrew Breitbart

US News • Views: 2,972

Here’s the new statement just released by the NAACP: NAACP Statement on the Resignation of Shirley Sherrod.

With regard to the initial media coverage of the resignation of USDA Official Shirley Sherrod, we have come to the conclusion we were snookered by Fox News and Tea Party Activist Andrew Breitbart into believing she had harmed white farmers because of racial bias.

Having reviewed the full tape, spoken to Ms. Sherrod, and most importantly heard the testimony of the white farmers mentioned in this story, we now believe the organization that edited the documents did so with the intention of deceiving millions of Americans.

The fact is Ms. Sherrod did help the white farmers mentioned in her speech.  They personally credit her with helping to save their family farm.

Moreover, this incident and the lesson it prompted occurred more that 20 years before she went to work for USDA.

Finally, she was sharing this account as part of a story of transformation and redemption. In the full video, Ms.Sherrod says she realized that the dislocation of farmers is about “haves and have nots.”  ”It’s not just about black people, it’s about poor people,” says Sherrod in the speech. “We have to get to the point where race exists but it doesn’t matter.”

This is a teachable moment, for activists and for journalists.

Most Americans agree that racism has no place in American Society.  We also believe that civil and human rights have to be measured by a single yardstick.

The NAACP has demonstrated its commitment to live by that standard.

The Tea Party Federation took a step in that direction when it expelled the Tea Party Express over the weekend. Unfortunately, we have yet to hear from other leaders in the Tea Party movement like Dick Armey and Sarah Palin, who have been virtually silent on the “internal bigotry” issue.

Next time we are confronted by a racial controversy broken by Fox News or their allies in the Tea Party like Mr. Breitbart, we will consider the source and be more deliberate in responding.  The tape of Ms. Sherrod’s speech at an NAACP banquet was deliberately edited to create a false impression of racial bias, and to create a controversy where none existed.  This just shows the lengths to which extremist elements will go to discredit legitimate opposition.

According to the USDA, Sherrod’s statements prompted her dismissal. While we understand why Secretary Vilsack believes this false controversy will impede her ability to function in the role, we urge him to reconsider.

UPDATE at 7/20/10 3:48:00 pm:

NAACP CEO Ben Jealous tweets:

Spoke to Ms. Sherrod earlier today and personally apologized. Plan to meet with her face-to-face the next time I’m in Georgia.

I love the word "snookered" so old fashioned but perfectly apt in this instance.

Perhaps if they were all invited to the White House to share a beer and talk things over...

This is exactly what they needed to say.

This focuses the story on the true villains and exposes them for the racial politics they are playing. It is eloquent and to the point. If the Obama administration says something similar and then pillories Fox and the Teabaggs for their very real racism they could make this into a victory.

4 wrenchwench  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 3:17:09pm

I don't see an apology there. Sure, they got snookered, but it was their own fault for not exercising ordinary caution.

..as I said earlier...

So, how long before Breitbart and the other empty-headed masses of the Right come out and claim that the NAACP is now "condoning racism" and trying to "cover it up"?

I'm guessing that Brietbart's apologists are going to be condeming the NAACP over this within the next couple of hours.

Bravo NAACP!

Both for stepping up to defend Sherrod, and for the excellent use of the word 'snookered'!

I think their next move is to blame the "racialized atmosphere created by the Democrats and Obama." That's what Tammy Bruce has been Tweeting.

15 elizajane  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 3:19:27pm

I want to see this statement getting real, honest news coverage. Not distortion and lies, like the way their Tea Party statement was covered -- where we got "they called the Tea Party racist" instead of "they called on the Tea Party to disavow racist elements." This is a carefully-crafted statement. Will the Right still be able to twist it?

I think that's easy for us to say. We're familiar with Brietbart's video editing but most people have never heard of him before or even knew where the video came from. They admitted their mistake and that's the best we can expect.

18 elizajane  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 3:21:15pm

"Snookered" used beautifully because they want to get in with the dictionary crowd, and distract them from fretting or fawning over Palinisms.

19 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 3:21:24pm

Now, that this has blown up a little, will the White House have the spine to use this to go on the offensive. That is what is needed.

I'd give him credit for doing so, if I wasn't so convinced that, without the real video being released today, that he'd likely have been claiming that Breitbart's hackjob was "proof" that the Obama Administration is racist towards white people.

Then lets keep in mind how the white people involved in the story earlier today told us how much they appreciated all the help they got from Sherrod....

39 simoom  Tue, Jul 20, 2010 3:30:05pm

MSNBC covered this poorly this morning too. Here's the video of the story on Morning Joe:

Mika: So what you just saw was the USDA official in Georgia who resigned after a YouTube clip showed her admitting that race helped determine how much aid would be given to a white farmer.

Down bottom the chyron reads: "USDA Employee Resigns After Admitting Racial Preference."

I like how an agenda-less "YouTube clip" is blamed ///.

That's really not any different from what I said. By staying off the resignation bandwagon until the story shakes out, Beck could spin it against Obama regardless of how the story turned out.

Ah, a thousand apologies. Between exhaustion and headache, I've been snapping at anything that moves today. I never meant to misconstrue your words.

Either the White House apologizes or she sues someone. I'm still going with White House apology, though. They can't just let it fester like this when they were obviously wrong.

There's no real evidence that the White House was involved. That's what her supervisors told her but it may or may not be true. I suspect her supervisors might have been concerned about discrimination lawsuits from white farmers and Tea Party activists who feel they we're helped enough because they're white. The might have told her the orders came from the White House to discourage her from going over their heads to appeal the decision.

They already drew their line in the sand today with Vilsack. They intend to go with the "Yeah, we might have goofed, but we believe our actions were justified" line, so don't expect a public apology from them. They might privately apologize to Sherrod, but I'm not sure they'd even take the risk of doing that.

I can't help it, but it's the historical problems with shit like that that still bothers me more than the insanity.

Maoists, or any communists, hated the Czars. The Russian communists hated Czars so much they had a revolution and killed them all.

So how the fuck did it become shorthand for 'commie'?

Much, much more challenging, actually. Tons of strategy to be played. To 'snooker' is to leave the other person with no shot, stuck behind another ball, for example.

Ms.Sherrod says she realized that the dislocation of farmers is about “haves and have nots.” ”It’s not just about black people, it’s about poor people,” says Sherrod in the speech. “We have to get to the point where race exists but it doesn’t matter.”

I agree with that statement and have said in these threads that most of what is perceived as racism is really more like classism. But I do believe that is the first time I have seen that point being vocalized by a public figure. A lot more people will perk their ears up and listen when someone complains of racism. As for classism.. No one seems to get fired up hearing about that. Good for her to make that distinction. I wonder what the civil rights leaders who look everywhere for evidence of racism think about her statement.
