The idea of the paranoid style as a force in politics would have little contemporary relevance or historical value if it were applied only to men with profoundly disturbed minds. It is the use of paranoid modes of expression by more or less normal people that makes the phenomenon significant.

Both songs great...... I much prefer their version of Thunder Road....... but then I've always thought others did Bruce's songs better than he could.

Bob Dylan was done better by others as well.

That was lovely. If we are switching to just the aesthetics of simple beauty, I humbly submit this:

The lyrics are nearly perfect poetry. They are full of double and triple meanings.

Is that French?

22 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Sat, Sep 18, 2010 11:21:54pm

re: #21 Mr Pancakes

Is that French?

It's in Hebrew.

Here it is with subtitles.

The translation is not perfect, but then again, many of the words do not translate to English well and they have very strong double meanings.

For example, Ruach is indeed wind. It is also breath and soul depending on context.

This song could be taken almost as a psalm in its language - or it could simply be about finding hope and existential angst.

23 Mr Pancakes  Sat, Sep 18, 2010 11:23:47pm

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure......

Another word to note is Shamayim. It is the sky, but it is also Heaven. Hebrew is a deeply metaphoric language. Eretz is ground, but also the land and earthly things... The lyrics are at once spiritual and mundane. The lyrics of the song are very deep.

Published in 1964, this essay should be required reading for anyone wanting to understand the recent course of global as well as American politics. It is especially relevant to an understanding the rise of conspiracism and conspiracy theories as a genuine factor in political discourse.

500 sounds good. Yikes. Hard to describe. The movie starts as if though you're picking it up from the middle. Lambert's voice is pre-amped or something and he uses that affected international accent of his.

Fortunately I just finished watching True Confessions with DeNiro and Duval which was an OK movie.

The parpanoid style has reached its heyday in the era of 24/7 news coverge.

These theories - and the folks behind them - make interesting stories, regardless of whether they have any substance to them.

The proponents are happy to get themselves and their ideas heard while the networks need material to flesh out their format. Dung meets beetle, and the ball gets rolling...

There are far better stories out there than the steady diet of paranoid delusional crap the cable networks feed us. Unfortunately, the good stories require actual journalistic work, which sometimes costs money, so the networks go the cheap, easy, stupid route of endless repeats of the more readily available crap.

Have you ever subjected yourself to four or more hours of CNN, FNC, HLN, MSNBC, etc.? Is there really so little news that they must repeat themselves so often and offer so little depth? Why is it that almost all of us can come up with better questions to ask politicians and other "leaders" than the softball and "well duh" stuff the network anchors and reporters ask?

Consipracy theories make interesting stories - which does not mean that they are subtantial or relevant. And like you said, they require a minimum of research and fact-checking: how can you fact check speculation?

The last time I was subjected to a Full TV 24-Hour News Cycle was during a visit back to the states just after the second Gulf War broke out in 2003, that was enough to put me off it for the rest of my life.

An old hippie radical friend explained to me that "free love" is highly misinterpreted: "free" is not an adjective here - it is supposed to be a verb, as in "liberate love", as in to free it from the restrictions that society has placed on it.

But we were also dealing with a generation that assumed that "freedom" meant the complete absence of any responsibilities for one's actions.

But the truth is that true freedom means that one must take full responsibility for all one's actions because a truly free person is not subject to any external compulsion or restrictions.

We are also seeing the flip side of the great American tradition of egalitarianism and democracy: anyone's opinion is as good as anyone else's, we distrust intellectual elites and are attracted by charismatic individuals who work outside or even against the "system".

But we sometimes fail to recognize the fact that Sarah Palis and Joe the Plumbers, for all thier charisma and folksiness just do not have the education and background to perform the jobs they are campaigning for.

Sexual healing!

Pale was the wounded Knight
That bore the rowan shield
Loud and cruel were the ravens' cries
As they feasted on the field

Saying beck water cold and clear
Will never clean your wound
There's none but the witch of the Westmoreland
Can make thee hale and sound

So turn, turn your stallion's head
Till his red mane flies in the wind
And the rider of the moon goes by
And the bright star falls behind

And clear was the paley moon
When shadow passed him by
Below the hill were the brightest stars
When he heard the owlet cry

Saying Why do you ride this way
And wherefore came you here?
I seek the witch of the westmoreland
Who dwells by the winding mere

And it's weary by the Ullswater
And the misty brakefern way
Till through the cleft of the Kirkstane pass
The winding water lay

He said Lie down my brindled hound
And rest ye my good gray hawk
And thee my steed may graze thy fill
For I must dismount and walk

But come when you hear my horn
And answer swift the call
For I fear ere the sun will rise this morn
Ye will serve me best of all

And it's down to the water's brim
He's borne the rowan shield
And the goldenrod he has cast in
To see what the lake might yield

And wet rose she from the lake
And fast and fleet went she
One half the form of a maiden fair
With a jet-black mare's body

And loud long and shrill he blew
Till his steed was by his side
High overhead the gray hawk flew
And swiftly he did ride

Saying Course well me brindled hound
And fetch me the jet-black mare
Stoop and strike me good gray hawk
And bring me the maiden fair

She said Pray sheath thy silvery sword
Lay down thy rowan shield
For I see by the briny blood that flows
You've been wounded in the field

And she stood in a gown of a velvet blue
Bound round with a silver chain
And she's kissed his pale lips once and twice
And three times round again

And she's bound his wounds with the goldenrod
Full fast in her arms he lay
And he has risen hale and sound
With the sun high in the day

She said Ride with your brindled hound at heel
And your good gray hawk in hand
There's none can harm the knight who's lain
With the Witch of the Westmoreland

The point is that good governance is about bringing various heads together and gaining a consensus that will produce desired results.

That is supposed to be the role of the executive: he/she cannot possibly absorb the information needed to make the decisions they need to make, they just have to have access to the right opinions.

Conservatives are now streessing principles and ideology over basic matters lie competence and electability, we will see how that plays out in the elections, and if they get elected, we will see how that reflects on how we are governed.

Well, that's the idea. Never perfectly followed, though the latest rise of populism in these United States is not encouraging wrt governance. I just can't see that group ever getting a clue about bigger pictures.

Early morning news starts off bad:

Authorities search for 13 from 'cult-like' sect

Deputies searched a wide swath of Southern California early Sunday for a break-off religious sect of 13 people that included children as young as three and left behind letters indicating they were awaiting an apocalyptic event and would soon see Jesus and their dead relatives in heaven, authorities said.

The group of El Salvadoran immigrants, described as "cult-like" by sheriff's officials, was led by Reyna Marisol Chicas, a 32-year-old woman from Palmdale in northeast Los Angeles county, sheriff's Captain Mike Parker said.

The group left behind cell phones, identifications, deeds to property, and letters indicating they were awaiting the Rapture.

"Essentially, the letters say they are all going to heaven to meet Jesus and their deceased relatives," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. "Some of the letters were saying goodbye."

[...]

According to an emergency bulletin put out by the governor's office, in addition to Chicas, the missing include: Norma Isela Serrano, 31, Alma Alicia Miranda Pleitez, 28; Martha Clavel, 39; Jose Clavel, 15; Crystal Clavel, 3; Roberto Tejada, 18; Jonathan Tejada, 17; Hugo Tejada, 3; Ezequel Chicas, 15; Genisis Chicas, 12; Bryan Rivera, 17; Stephanie Serrano, 12.

Most of them aren't even adults.

I just ran across an infomercial for a device you plug into your car (like mechanics do) and then you plug it into your computer and it will tell you what is wrong with your car if anything.(say if you check engine light comes on) The device has warning lights on it. Freaking brilliant.

HO-LEE SHIT

U.S. Soldiers killed Afghan Civilians for 'sport'

This isn't some crack pot making the claims, this is from the court martial charges the Armed Forces are filing.

According to charging documents, the unprovoked, fatal attack on Jan. 15 was the start of a months-long shooting spree against Afghan civilians that resulted in some of the grisliest allegations against American soldiers since the U.S. invasion in 2001. Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones.

The subsequent investigation has raised accusations about whether the military ignored warnings that the out-of-control soldiers were committing atrocities. The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the Army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed.

According to charging documents, an Afghan named Gul Mudin began walking toward the soldiers. As he approached, Cpl. Jeremy N. Morlock, 22, of Wasilla, Alaska, threw the grenade on the ground, records show, to create the illusion that the soldiers were under attack.

Probably a coincidence. But I'd certainly like to hear a reaction from, just for example, prominent people from his hometown...

Iran detains seven U.S. troops: report

[Link: www.calgaryherald.com...]

EHRAN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Iranian border guards detained seven U.S. troops as they tried to illegally enter the Islamic state, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Sunday, without giving a source.

"Recently seven American troops were detained by Iranian guards in a southeastern province of the country ... Two Iranians accompanying the troops were also arrested," said Fars.

No other news agency reported the incident, which Fars said occurred in Sistan-Baluchestan, an impoverished province that borders Pakistan and Afghanistan.

If confirmed, the incident would aggravate tension between Tehran and Washington, which have lacked diplomatic relations since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution and are at odds over many issues particularly Iran’s disputed nuclear programme.

Lets hope this isn't accurate.

Iran denies report of seven US troops detained: report

TEHRAN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Iran denied on Sunday that border guards had detained seven U.S. troops, calling the report "unfounded", the state-run English language Press TV said.

The country’s Arabic language television al-Alam also quoted Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, in charge of Iran’s border security, as denying that any such incident had happened in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, as earlier reported by a semi-official news agency.

Huckabee Opposes Insurance For People With Pre-Existing Conditions (AUDIO)

"It sounds so good, and it's such a warm message to say we're not gonna deny anyone from a preexisting condition," Huckabee explained at the Value Voters Summit today. "Look, I think that sounds terrific, but I want to ask you something from a common sense perspective. Suppose we applied that principle [to] our property insurance. And you can call your insurance agent and say, "I'd like to buy some insurance for my house." He'd say, "Tell me about your house." "Well sir, it burned down yesterday, but I'd like to insure it today." And he'll say "I'm sorry, but we can't insure it after it's already burned." Well, no preexisting conditions."

OBAMA GOES TO CHURCH!

The first family left the White House on foot this morning for the 9am choral holy eucharist service and sermon at St John's Church Lafayette Square.

The Obamas walked out of the residence at 8.49am and crossed the park to the nearby Episcopal church.

The president was wearing a dark suit and held Sasha Obama's hand. She was wearing a blue dress and cream cardigan. Michelle and Malia Obama were wearing cream-colored dresses. (Check photos for accuracy of descriptions. It's sunny and pool was at a distance.)

The service sheet doesn't indicate what the sermon is on but the gospel is Luke 16:1-13, which ends 'You cannot serve God and wealth.'

Story as of OCt. 2009 -

Q: How does the church attendance of President Barack Obama compare to that of his immediate predecessor?

A: Obama has attended church twice in Washington since his inauguration — on Easter and on Oct. 11 — at St. John’s Church, said Gary Scott Smith, author of “Faith and the Presidency: From George Washington to George W. Bush” (Oxford University Press, 2009) and chairman of the history department at Grove City College, a liberal arts Christian college in Grove City, Pa. The Episcopal church is on Lafayette Square, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. Smith said Obama also has worshipped a couple of times at Evergreen Chapel, a nondenominational church at Camp David in Maryland, which the president has chosen as his primary place of worship, according to a July Time magazine report. Bush attended St. John’s periodically, but worshipped fairly regularly at Evergreen Chapel, Smith said.

re: #164 Walter L. Newton

Smith said Obama also has worshiped a couple of times at Evergreen Chapel, a nondenominational church at Camp David in Maryland, which the president has chosen as his primary place of worship, according to a July Time magazine report. Bush attended St. John’s periodically, but worshiped fairly regularly at Evergreen Chapel, Smith said.

When I first started out at age 18 or 19, I would cut off the legs and wings, make 2 nights worth of dinners, boil the rest and make chicken and yellow rice. Back then a chicken cost about $1,50. Instant potatoes were cheap and cans of corn were 50 cents.

I worked shifts like that at Officemax. Sunday shifts there are 9:30am till about 7:30pm.

I have been with the store 6 months, and I don't think there has been a single week where I have worked the same schedule twice.

My average is 20-25 hours, which is fine with me, that pays the bills. But the odd part of the job is the scheduling. The store is staff according to what some computer program decides is going to be the most beneficial, based on last years figures, time of year and other parameters.

So, there is all sorts of odd shifts. For example, this coming week, we have 1 cashier on vacation, 4 taking at least one personal day, and the over night cashier taking a vacation day. So, here's what happens...

Walter

Sun 10:45 am - 7:15 pm
Mon 12 midnight to 8:30 am
Tue off
Wed 4:45 pm - 12 midnight
Thu Off
Fri 4:15 pm - 7:15 pm
Sat 12:30 pm - 9:00 pm

It's 34 point something hours this week... including that overnight shift. This is more hours than I normally get (more than I want), but it's a good example of the scatter-shot nature of the scheduling.

It's like this every week. Out of 20 cashiers, there are only 4 full timers, and only 5-6 of any of the cashiers have anything that looks like a set weekly schedule. Most of us are scheduled similar to the above.

Concept - maximum coverage for as little bookable hours as they can get.

It was that way at Officemax, too. The only non-exempt full-timers were the three-man logistics crew (three Latino gentlemen who had all been there for years) and the leads. The schedule was bit more reliable, but it often varied wildly. So I do know how it is for you on this one.

They work right on the edge. We are not staffed to handle short term sicknesses or sudden family problems that require a few days off.

If we have even one person on the front end miss a day or two because of some unusual need, the whole front end suffers... and most important, the customer.

There is no wiggle room.

Okay, now you're making me feel bad, as a nine to fiver (though some days it's 10:30 to 4ish, but when we get close to a release there are a few longer days as shit needs to get done). This week, however, I'll be nine-to-fiving on a pretty strict schedule, as I've got a consultant coming in at 2K a day to help with some complex reporting needs (the DB in their application is not indexed well, and customizing reports is a bitch, so it's their turn to see if their app can do what we want).

Ok... got it. Yes I do enjoy the job. Would rather be doing more IT/Tech/Programming... still send out resumes every week, and I still have that contract with Kaiser for occasional programming on a legacy system I developed for them years ago... but, I don't see the job as being "less than" for me or anyone who works there.

One advantage that I think our store has is that we are in the "hills," not in Denver, non union (although union practices and pay scales are mostly the norm anyway) and we are a little more laid back then an inner city store or a up scale suburban store.

And that doesn't mean we slack. Out of 141 stores in this division, we are 29th in sales and productivity. We are 24/7 and 10 times as busy as the Safeway a mile down the road.

There's a brewing outrageous outrage that the makers of Bioshock are going to insult the Tea Party.....
BioShock Infinite’s Vision of a Nazified America

In the fictional city of Columbia, all non-European immigrants must list their religious affiliation (mono- or polytheist?) in addition to cranial measurements, complexion and other data used in the study of eugenics (pictured above).

Could foreigners be the new Little Sisters in BioShock Infinite? Consider that in 2010, armed U.S. civilians regularly patrol the country’s southern border. Immigration is the hottest of hot-button issues. BioShock’s moral choice of whether to kill a possessed little girl is politically tame in comparison to asking players to deal with game characters based on their race or ethnicity.

So, will racism and xenophobia merely serve as a backdrop in BioShock Infinite, or will these themes be expressed overtly through the gameplay?

The possibility brings new meaning to what both Levine and Robertson repeated at the BioShock Infinite premiere: There will be no “sacred cows” in the development of this game.

Really. I've spent 36-38 hours getting ready for an 9-hour game. Setting up and running a game takes a lot of work.

I think I might have remembered what probably motivated that dream. I drove by Caboose Hobbies the other day and had some model building flashbacks.

I'm fine. It's just seriously annoying, is all. Choosing American symbols and depicting them as entirely hypocritical with no counter balance is what blame-America-first people do. I don't like people who take that attitude. They don't have to wave the flag, but they should provide some balance and understanding.

How do you know there isn't going to be any counter balance? It's not even out yet. The previous games have been filled with counter balance. I'm not even sure where you're getting it's a about a 'blame America' thing anyway. That's not how I read it. If Bioshock 1 and 2 (though definitely not as good as 1) these games take basic ideas and run with them to the more creepy extremes and deal through some pretty complex (and interesting gameplay) with some of the moral ethical questions that these 'extremes' bring about. One taking a more extreme rightier worldview and 2 exploring a more extreme leftier worldview.

Good porch music for Halloween, except that it would keep the parents away.

For ages and ages, I've wanted to create this scenario for Halloween:

The walkway leading up to my front door is enclosed by plastic tents, illuminated from within by green LEDs or Chem-lights.

Minders at the opening of the tent tunnel are dressed in full NBC garb. Their job is to lead each trick-or-treating kid into THE SURGICAL THEATER, where we have an alien corpse on an autopsy table, over which HAZMAT-suited "doctors" are fussing. As each kid wanders by, the "doctors" use their forceps to pluck a Jolly Rancher or what have you from gaping thoracic cavity of the alien, and drop it into the waiting loot bag of the trick-or-treater, who will forever remember it as the coolest thing ever.

I never manage to have enough spare money or free time to make this happen.

Look, you can't read the thoughts of people. I'm sure there are plenty of Swedes who are not anti-Semites, but the whole issue is tested when there is a problem brewing and if they do nothing, then the perception is there.

The U.S. has taken a decidedly anti-Muslim stand. There are those who accuse Obama of being a Muslim as if it meant he were the devil himself. The anti-Islamic stand has been ratcheted up to 100. If we don't stand for our Muslims, who will stand for them? And what will our perception in the world become?

As far as I know, none. The main far-right groupings here are virulently anti-Muslim but ostensibly pro Israel and not hostile towards Jews.
Malmo, which is the city in which antisemitic violence has been on the rise, has become a cesspool of crime and disorder. On top of that, the city has a (scumbag) major who linked the increase in antisemitic hate crimes to a lack of reproach among Jews in Malmo towards Israel and it's supposed crimes in Gaza and elsewhere.

There are no problems with antisemitic violence in any other part of the country.

re: #307 Winny Spencer

As far as I know, none. The main far-right groupings here are virulently anti-Muslim but ostensibly pro Israel and not hostile towards Jews.
Malmo, which is the city in which antisemitic violence has been on the rise, has become a cesspool of crime and disorder. On top of that, the city has a (scumbag) major who linked the increase in antisemitic hate crimes to a lack of reproach among Jews in Malmo towards Israel and it's supposed crimes in Gaza and elsewhere.

There are no problems with antisemitic violence in any other part of the country.

Well that's good to hear. Is Stockholm having a problem? I was under the impression it was also.

re: #307 Winny Spencer

My Swedish friends consider Malmo a huge embarrassment to Sweden, but it doesn't represent them. They've never been there, it's not an important city in any way.

When there are anti-Semitic attacks ignored in Stockholm, then Sweden would have a problem.

No, it's pretty clear that an alternate version of America is the target. Since Columbia is not America, and the things depicted in it don't happen here. Unless we've started making non-European immigrants register their religions when I wasn't looking.

Ah ok. Then it would seem Dr. Truth was, indeed, a little excitable. But I have to say, the situation in Malmo isn't good, moreso if the country is headed for a political change. How do you feel about that?

Indeed. Rightfully so. And Sweden deserves to be embarrassed about Malmo. But the more dangerous aspect is that the fascist groups in Sweden are using Malmo, and Muslim immigration in general, as a plank to get themselves elected.

I'm hoping the Bears will prove themselves today and gun down the Cowboys.

It's "to bear arms," not "to arm bears".

You meant they'd claw the Cowboys, right?

(I know next to nothing about football. What usually happens when the Cowboys meet the Redskins or the Chiefs? How do the Jets fare against the Eagles?)

Huckabee Opposes Insurance For People With Pre-Existing Conditions (AUDIO)

Bravo, Huck. Bra-Vo.

That's just so sweet, huck. So if a guy has diabetes or his child has ashtma, the family can't be insured against skiing accidents or bird flu or to cover his wife's next pregnancy.

No

He can't get coverage FOR his diabetes or his kids asthma

Outside of that, they would be covered

Except that diabetes and asthma are both systemic diseases that cause complications and exacerbate other issues.

Preliminary results for the Sweden Democrats show that they'll get 4,6% of the votes and will gain seats in parliament.

But, in all likelihood, the current center-right government will retain power.

I too worry about the situation in Malmo and politicians undoubtedly need to improve their efforts to uphold law and order as well as promote integration and harmony among ethnic groups there. Maybe the election results will be a wake up call in that regard.

True, and it would be up to a doctor to tell the ins. company whether or not the "new" illness is a result of the existing or not

Again,. doesn't mean the person gets NO coverage at all

re: #326 sattv4u2

It means that for the primary thing they need medical coverage for, they don't get coverage.

It's be like getting auto insurance that doesn't cover your engine when your engine is faulty.

No

It's like asking the ins. company to cover and pay for the engine after the engine has already seized

No, it's really not. It's like asking them to cover for the engine when the engine has a known design flaw in it. Which they do, all the time, since no engines are made perfectly.

Of course, health insurance companies don't want to pay for the health care for actually sick people. This is a good demonstration that their nature is parasitic, and not actually beneficial to any other entity in the health care field.

If that's how you feel, I'd suggest you read the entire thread where this comment is from:

Huckabee defends denying insurance for pre-existing conditions, compares it to getting insurance for burnt-down house

Wow, so he is basically categorizing people with pre-existing conditions as criminals, fraudsters. How dare they try to get health insurance when they are sick! Scammers! Obviously trying to steal from the healthy and wealthy. Damn you sickies.

Of course, Mr. Huckabee, you must conveniently forget those of us who were diagnosed with a chronic, life-long condition as children, and cannot buy health insurance AT ANY PRICE. What kind of free market is that? No matter how much money I have or am willing to pay, employees at Blue Cross have been instructed not to even let me fill out an application for health insurance.

I guess my parents should have just bulldozed or junked me as a child, like you would a burned-out house or totalled car.

Malmo needs to have its law enforcement temporarily nationalized and then reformed. They need to bring in Compstat and other modern crime fighting tactics.

re: #340 sattv4u2

From your Washington Examiner link:

Residents in the Washington area can expect to pay more for their health care as the federal health legislation takes effect in the coming months.

From your Guam link:

As health insurance companies on Guam increase benefits as required by the national health care reform, the increased costs will be passed on, as in any other business, to consumers, said health insurance representatives.

Last I checked, the current health care reform package doesn't even include a public option, let alone a single-payer system like Canada's (which, as per the graph I linked, results in lower health care costs than America's system).

So thanks again for making my point :)

re: #58 Cato the Elder

I found out I lost a friend today.

His name was Joe Sweeney and he died of a heart attack in the shower on Wednesday. His 87-year-old mother found him the next morning.

Joe was a recovering crack addict whose life was just getting back to normal.

This is for you, Joe.

My condolences to his mother and to you. There's not much you can say to her under these circumstances except, "He was turning it around, and he was a good person", and not much you can do except be available.

Remember the good times, and laugh at the minor foibles. That's what I want my friends to do when I'm gone.

Except that diabetes and asthma are both systemic diseases that cause complications and exacerbate other issues.

Especially for right-wingers, never, ever confuse the issue by bringing up the facts.

Remember, they're no big on science, critical thinking, systematic thinking, or logic, since none of them are specifically mentioned in the Bible.
