Jim Hoft: Internet’s Dimmest Bulb?

Blogosphere • Views: 28,129

Ben Dimiero asks: Is Jim Hoft (“Gateway Pundit”) the Dumbest Human on the Internet?

I would answer “yes,” but there’s some pretty stiff competition with people like Pamela Geller and Dan Riehl.

In spite of the fact that Hoft embarrasses himself on a near-daily basis and has shown time and again that he is either willfully dishonest or staggeringly inept, he has managed to carve out a role as one of the most-read, most respected writers in the conservative blogosphere. And his influence extends beyond the blogs. Hoft’s stories are regularly featured on Fox News’ Fox Nation website, and he has been cited as a source on-air by Fox News on multiple occasions.

Hoft’s ongoing position of influence in the conservative media is evidence that the entire movement is intellectually bankrupt.

It’s bad, all right.

Dimiero does a pretty good job of recounting Hoft’s inane mistakes, deliberate lies, and general illiteracy, and includes several screenshots of Hoft’s more ridiculous headlines.

Here’s another screenshot; this was Jim Hoft’s response to me when I pointed out that his source for a false claim about Obama education czar Kevin Jennings was an extremist anti-gay hate group:

UPDATE at 9/22/10 1:34:42 pm:

Dan Riehl defends Jim Hoft: Taking Up Erick Boehlert’s Challenge, Or Why I Love Jim Hoft.

Erick Boehlert Tweets:

Can’t someone/anyone from RW blogosphere defend Jim Hoft

Hoft doesn’t need defending from the likes of you, Boehlert. But I’ll always have his back because he fights the Left the same way and every bit as hard as they routinely fight us everyday. But that doesn’t seem to bother you, now does it, ass hat?

Now, crawl back under your twitter-rock. Evey time you peak your head out you get pimp slammed like some silly biatch, because no one over here gives a damn what you think, moron.

So, do you want a follow up? Or, are we done now, punk?

I rest my case.

I'm been thinking about this:

is the internet killing the republican party?

Because what you have with the Republicans, is all these wackos in the base, these people who truly believe the most insane and horrible things, they all have far more of a voice than they ever would have pre-internet. No blogs, no avenue for a guy like this to make a mark, because the establishment GOP wouldn't let him

But nowadays, they all have voices! And they can speak to the base straight up and be just as crazy as they are, and the establishment GOP which used to keep a lid on the crazy, now they're helpless to stop it, because it's the internet, it's twitter, it's blogs, it's this hive mind full of rage that can't be controlled. And you have people with a brain on their shoulders in the GOP like Rove and Frum, just getting beaten into the ground by these bug-eyed freaks who think witchcraft is real and the president is simultaneously a muslim and a satanist

Yeah, but with printing presses, you still needed massive amounts of resources to print anything of any note. You still needed a giant physical piece of equipment, and a ton of raw materials and labor. With the internet, there's zero barrier to entry. Computers are dirt cheap now, internet connections are cheap, and you can set up your on blog with no experience.

It can't be corrected until someone prominent on the right takes a firm reasonable stand against Fox and the rest of the right wing media and garners more conservative support than Fox and Limbaugh. In other words, it can't be corrected. There isn't any way for the right to reign it back in.

I mean, imagine a scenario that would allow for a reasonable moderate conservative leader to emerge, gain national prominence, and drive the message back out of crazyland and into the mainstream. Such a thing couldn't be done without directly taking on Fox, Limbaugh, Palin, etc, and taking them on means you are inviting a 24/7 smear campaign directed to the very audience you might hope to reach.

There is no way home from this for the right, except off a cliff. They have no choice but to continually ratchet up the crazy until it explodes.

Perhaps it's killing both parties, just killing the GOP more obviously. In the pre-transistor days the electorate got a clumsy, incomplete view of all the crazy and all the good circulating through the political arteries. They responded by lumping the pols into 3 or 4 approximate parties. The Intertubes give us a much greater "Send" capacity and much finer Recieve" resolution, thus more categories. Someday we could select from 40 million or so eParties.

We now return to our regularly-scheduled screwing around.

If we do end up with a multi-party system, then we will have a serious problem, because our electoral system is winner-take-all, with no runoff elections. It takes 270 electoral college votes to elect a president, for example.

We would need to adopt a more parliamentary system in order for that to work.

Frankly, I think we need a parliamentary system. It could work, if the way elections are managed were changed to include runoff elections. There would be loosely-based coalitions in the house and senate, temprarily uniting to pass specific bills, then realigning as the next bill comes up for a vote. It could actually work, I think.

The added bonus would be that blatantly partisan and intellectually dishonest organizations like the Heritage Foundation, the National Review,or the AEI would be forced to advocate for issues, rather than for parties. There wouldn't be much to gain by being blatantly partisan. people might actually be forced to make arguments for positions, rather than for specific candidates. It would pay to temper your language so as not to alienate potentially sympathetic legislators, rather than just throw bombs to piss off "your" half of the electorate.

Conservatism has become the epitome of the very affirmative action they create as a straw man and say they hate.

Truly they allow some of the dumbest people within their ranks to ascend to power and influence so long as they have conservative credentials. I didn't truly get that until the Justice Department hirings of graduates from Regent University School of Law during the Bush administration. Before that, I thought that both parties had their share of intelligent people and those who were dumb as rocks but happened to be in the right place at the right time, or born to the right person.

But lordy, lately. . . These people are willfully ignorant and happy to be so.

Have I really been so blinded to this or is it a recent phenomenon? Am I just succumbing to confirmation bias? (for you conservatives, that means your brain tricks you into believing what it wants to believe by highlighting the misses and discarding the data that's contrary to your world view. It is a protective mechanism to avoid cognitive dissonance.)

I never even heard of him.

re: #29 Fozzie Bear

Yet.... with all of this....the Democrats are going to get trounced in November. The same thing happened to the Republicans in 2006. It took the Republicans six years to completely turn off the majority of the country. The democrats will manage this feat in two short years.
The cycle continues......

Good times. I get those all the time. Press the number and play "let me talk with your supervisor." See how many levels you can get up the food chain.

I work from home, I don't have the energy to play with them ;_;

My policy now is generally to hang up on any recording calling me unless they immediately identify themselves as being from A Thing I Use Regularly (which happened a few weeks ago, my card was put on hold because I bought a bunch of camping supplies for BM at the last minute, and the robocall told me why)

Yes, the robo call route is very helpful and easy to resolve. You just say "yes" it is approved. The worst we had happen was a theft of the cc number and extravagant gift baskets being bought with it at a location in Denver, probably a money laundering operation. That card had to be canceled.
