As far back as Yossarian could recall, he explained to Clevinger with a patient smile, somebody was always hatching a plot to kill him. There were people who cared for him and people who didn’t, and those who didn’t hated him and were out to get him. They hated him because he was Assyrian. But they couldn’t touch him, he told Clevinger, because he was Tarzan, Mandrake, Flash Gordon. He was Bill Shakespeare. He was Cain, Ulysses, the Flying Dutchman; he was Lot in Sodom, Deirdre of the Sorrows, Sweeney in the nightingales among trees. He was miracle ingredient Z-247. He was –

“Crazy!” Clevinger interrupted, shrieking. “That’s what you are! Crazy!”

India's Free Lunch

Since 2001 all Indian primary schools have provided pupils with a free midday meal. Seven years on truancy rates have been slashed, and child health is soaring. Western governments are taking note.

Feeding kids is a commie plot. If the parents could keep their money, they could home school them and afford to feed them according to God's plan.

Not surprisingly:

Very Conservative Americans: Leaders Should Stick to Beliefs

A majority of very conservative Americans believe political leaders in Washington should stick to their beliefs even if little is accomplished, while all other groups, particularly moderates and liberals, are more amenable to compromise for the sake of getting things done.

These data are from an aggregate of 2,039 interviews with national adults from two recent Gallup surveys -- the first conducted Nov. 4-7, 2010, and the second, Jan. 7-10, 2011. Response patterns to this question were similar in both surveys.

[...]

The Chart

It is not surprising at all that the ideologues reject notions of compromise.

Just more evidence of what will be driving the GOP.

Regarding Reagan, GHWB, etc. - I'm coming to the opinion that our (the US) outlandish material wealth since WWII, and grossly out-sized international control since that time, has given us so much leeway in making decisions that even the multitude of poor decisions by numerous leaders (in both the executive and legislative branches of government) have been softened in their impact.

However, we are finally reaching a point post-WWII and post-Bretton Woods that we no longer have that luxury.

Our foolishness and nearsightedness will now increasingly be felt, manifested as changes in lifestyles and expectations.

It really, really, really annoyed me when Obama suggested that people might change their lifestyles to be less wasteful and consume less, and was met with mad, blinkered rage at that suggestion.

It's a suggestion that my Depression era grandparents said every day. It's a suggestion of being responsible, of considering that you're not the only person on the earth, and that there's not an infinite amount of stuff available. It's common sense.

It has been my experience that government would rather pay to fix a problem than actually prevent one.

When you fix a problem, there is a 'hero' introduced into the mix.

In acknowledging a problem, a deficiency is introduced into the mix.

In Jr. High School there was a group of girls who would sit in the room and talk, and the teacher would say, "Who's talking?" and (of course) no one would fess up.

Then the teacher would say, "Well, whoever it was talking, their momma don't know how to raise they kids and they ain't got no home-trainin'."
(I swear, she said it just like that)

One of the girls in the group would jump up and say, "I wasn't talkin'. And don't you be talkin' 'bout my momma!".

Seems that the same tactic worked for the sheriff.

It'd only be hypocrisy if we were all presidents. We're not. Unless you can point out ways that Obama himself is being terribly wasteful, then I really don't see your point. Obama didn't tell people to do without and engage in a monastic lifestyle, he asked them to consider whether what they were doing was actually necessary.

As the president, he's got a lot more responsibilities and a lot more to do. It's silly to attack him for using resources in a resource-intensive job.

100 Tigger2005  Wed, Jan 12, 2011 4:21:14am

Oh brother (literally). If you check my posts on the previous thread you'll find that I quoted my brother's reply to my message on Facebook, announcing I was sick of violent right-wing rhetoric and that I was done with the Republican Party until they loudly and clearly denounced it (actually I'm done with them for other reasons as well, but that will do for starters). Here's his latest reply:

The fact that the Congresswoman was a Jewish Democrat is evidence of squat. This guys political views were all over the place.
Keep looking under rocks for hate speech and violence on the right little brother. I can see the tactics of calli...ng everyone a racist and violent extremists is working to distract from the real message.
By the way, Nazi's were socialists by definition. Advocating for totalitarian control of industry, education and healthcare makes you a leftist, socialist, communist, statist. It's all varying degrees of the same thing.. Hitler's nasty habit of cooking people into casseroles and invading other countries is the only reason he is not revered on the left.

Also, as a Jew, saying 'cooking people into casseroles' is really fucking disrespectful to the dead. It's kind of luridly stupid.

re: #95 EdDantes

And how has President Obama altered his lifestyle since he took office? I do not begrudge a President taking advantage of his perks, but to lecture the rest of us seems hipocritcal.

On “Meet the Press” December 26, top White House adviser Valerie Jarrett said President Obama’s “biggest regret” is that the severity of the economic crisis forced him to “spend almost every waking hour in Washington focusing very hard on solving that crisis” and thus kept him from traveling the country to connect with the American people. According to Jarrett, Obama recently told aides, “I really want to figure out a way where I can spend more time outside of Washington listening and learning and engaging the American people.” Jarrett says that in 2011 the president’s schedule will “reflect that priority” — that is, include more time outside the nation’s capital.

but then...

As of January 2, Obama has been president for 712 days. According to figures compiled by CBS News reporter Mark Knoller, who serves as a sort of unofficial White House record-keeper, Obama has spent 339 of those days — nearly 48 percent — outside Washington.

BO lives in his own disconnected reality....he loves the pomp and the perks of office....he's a big spender and a big traveler and his lifestyle is pretty large, even for a president....but to whine about being pinned down in DC shows he is simply out of touch...some people consider it lying about the time line....he should shut his pie hole with regard to lifestyles

I sell both. Refacing is cheaper (doesn't look like it, but since you know all the costs right up front, there are no surprises).

Remodel is my preference. Just looks nicer. Near Atlanta? Chances are your cabinets are 80% pressboard. If so? Remodel. If they're custom, solid wood and you like the layout? Reface away.

That's really fucking weird. She pretends that Gifford didn't specifically call out her as being irresponsible with violent rhetoric.

Does she think people will just forget that?

Does she think she can get away with misusing 'blood libel' like that?

AFAIK, it was Reynolds in the WSJ who first prominently suggested the term blood libel, implying antisemitic bigotry, was somehow appropriate for something taken to be a smear against Palin.

I am thinking she is scrambling to control the narrative now before Giffords is able to speak again.

Sarah Palin's attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president, Secret Service agents revealed during the final weeks of the campaign.

The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.

Also, regarding the whole appropriateness of her making a statement at all. I mean, she is not a Governor anymore, she does not hold any public office and is not currently running for one officially. She is a politician and a media personality. How is her making a statement relevant? Of course because she's been mentioned in the debate after the shooting and even before the shooting by a victim of the shooting in a context repeated in the debate after the shooting, but she refuses to say anything about this at all, just shooing it away with a baseless tu quoque and a suggestion that those kind of talking points are tantamount to antisemitic charges of childmurder and sacrilege. And then she has the audacity to also repeat the whole "oh those politicos politicizing this event for their own selfish gains", pretending that her scramble to keep control of the direction of the narrative in order to save her own brand is somehow an appropriate effort to "heal the nation" or whatever the fuck she is pretending to be doing altruistically with this message.

Joe Lieberman The Nazi to go after American Muslims because killing Iraqi children on behalf of Israel is not enough pleasure for him

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate today’s Hitler. Yes, that’s right….I hate Joe Lieberman who would kill every American alive on earth to protect his pasty white Israel. He hates all of us. Oh, I know you’re telling yourself right now, “But Kay! I’m a conservative and I love everything Joe says and does! He obviously loves me and my party and is very loyal to the cause!”, but what you’re missing is he is using you knuckleheads to catapult his hateful agenda against the United States on behalf of Israel. See? He would applaud loudly if you died on behalf of Israel and there’s no telling how he would react if he conspired to kill President Obama either! Oh wait. I know how Joe would react if President Obama was gunned down by Israelis. He would blame Iran, applaud loudly at the idea of Americans dying in Iran for Israel, and then he would hold a press conference telling us “how sad he is to hear of the President’s passing”, you know, as if the President died of a heart attack rather than at the end of a Israeli sniper’s bullet.

See? Hitler hated the Jews and now the Jewish Joe hates all Muslims. I bet Joe is a birther too and believes President Obama is a secret Muslim!

Joe has decided to hold Senate hearings in reaction to the Ford Hood massacre, because the man who fired the gun there and who killed 13 has a funny last name and is Muslim. See? Joe doesn’t care what the FBI or the Army has to say about this! Nope. Joe wants to become the Judge and Jury against ALL MUSLIMS ON BEHALF OF ISRAEL. Of course, when he and Susan Collins of Maine under George Bush were the heads of Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, these two did nothing to hold George Bush and his Mafia Thugs accountable for their actions! Nope. The hearings they did hold were laughable. The two of them would ask the witnesses, “Did you do anything wrong?” and when they heard, “Nope!”, they would bang the gavel down on the table and then say, “Okay! Lunchtime!”. Spit.

GO TO HELL JOE LIEBERMAN! You’re a traitor to all of humanity! Your empty shell of a heart is in Israel………SO MOVE THERE PLEASE AND DON’T COME BACK. The fact you’re trying to drum up anti-Muslim sentiment in this country to satisfy your lust is absolutely disgusting!

You, know, I was just thinking…

One of the Right's most favorite talking points being that Obama is the big apologist, always saying "I'm sorry" to the world for America's exceptionalism, when in reality Obama's been just a little more willing than his predecessors to be honest about some of America's shortcomings.

And here is one of the top celebs of the rightwing, pretty much refusing to acknowledge any shortcomings of relevance in the political context and ignoring the obvious in order to get it on record that everybody but her and her brand's been irresponsible. It's like the Anti-Fisk.

The federal prosecution of alleged gunman Jared Lee Loughner will likely focus first on whether he should be tried in Arizona, then shift to the question of his mental competency.

Which is funny (not in a particularly haha kind of way) because trying to hold Palin responsible for her statements is exactly what Giffords had been doing on March 25, 2010:

“I think it’s important for all leaders, not just leaders of the Republican Party or the Democratic Party … community leaders, figures in our community to say, ‘Look, we can’t stand for this.’ I mean, this is a situation where people really need to realize that this rhetoric, and firing people up, and even things … For example, we’re on Sarah Palin’s targeted list, but the way she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district. And when people do that, they’ve gotta realize that there’s consequences to that action.”

Also, a reminder: Sarah Palin blamed by the US Secret Service over death threats against Barack Obama

This woman is simply irresponsible.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area, which is digging out from another snowfall. It wasn't nearly as bad as the Boxing Day Snowpocalypse, and NYC Sanitation appears to have done its job without the craziness and massive bureaucratic fail from that day.

Still, the inconveniences from that snowstorm, and today's snow are nothing in comparison to what Haitians are dealing with a year after the massive quake killed nearly 300,000 people. The country is still in shambles and rebuilding is a distant thought to many because they haven't cleared rubble from 95% of the affected areas. It's doubtful that millions of Haitians will be in proper housing by the time this year's hurricane season starts. Foreign donations haven't gotten the job done and the Haitian government isn't any better.

I've given up on that fight.

A little explanation. (For some of you this is old news, for others... possibly informative, and for the rest of you... you'll recognize more shameless self-promotion).

I spent two years working on the stage version of the book "I Never Promise You A Rose Garden," a 1963 fiction (which was actually a fictionally dramatized true story, based on the authors actual hospitalization due to her own schizophrenia) with help from the author Joanne Greenberg, professionals and Dr. Gail Hornstein (Head of Woman's Studies, Holyoake College, Ma.), biographer of the Joanne's real doctor Frieda Fromm-Reichmann.

The show had a world premiere here in Colorado, positive reviews in the local papers and Variety Magazine from Los Angeles, and was nominated for a number of theatre awards and won two of them.

I am not a professional, but I am a very informed individual, and even a professional psychiatrist cannot honestly diagnose something as complicated as schizophrenia by simple reading someone's ranting or watching their videos. It takes at least a minimum of controlled observation in a clinical setting.

But schizophrenia has become a mental illness catch all, putting all sorts of characters in that slot, with out any valid evidence.

I don't know why it bothers me so much. Maybe the same reason when someone says something here on LGF, and another Lizard knows better (I'm looking at you Obdicut :)... and makes a correction.

Anyway... that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

(In fairness to the shameless self-promotion, you may read more at Wiki... [Link: en.wikipedia.org...] ... or view some video of the show and read some reviews... [Link: newton.acrossthebow.com...] )

Apparently one of the few sources of revenue are taxes and fees on bringing in heavy equipment (ditch diggers, front end loaders, etc.) and that's slowing things down further. It's bizarre. The gov't there is broke - and broken. And I doubt that the US is interested in nation building - even though this is a country sorely in need of massive assistance to get it on a proper footing. We'll help them limp along and that'll be that.

Everyone has already moved on to the next international crisis, and the victims of last one are already being forgotten.

But there are aid groups that are still doing heavy lifting, like MSF (Doctors Without Borders) who are providing medical services to supplement the few surviving hospital facilities deal with the ongoing mess.

Thanks. Yes... my "version" of the story goes beyond the book, by about 7 years, and yes, Dr. Frieda Fromm-Reichmann's career did take a turn for the worst. She was fighting what she saw as the intrusion of drug only therapy, and she saw that as both wrong and a threat to the careers of intensive psychoanalyst.

I layered the book story about "Deborah" with the bio of Dr. Frieda Fromm-Reichmann by Dr. Gail Hornstein to give a sort of "the rest of the story" version of the material.

And on a related topic. I'm a software developer. I can recognize intelligently designed application and websites.

Apples Itunes store, Apples web site and Itunes itself are applications what have gotten out of control, it's a mishmash of developers bits and pieces of added functionality, with no consideration to a consistent interface, functions, usability and so on.

It's all spaghetti, patches, band aids and slow and kludgy. Someone at Apple needs to consider spending some time and money to redesign FROM THE BOTTOM UP, these applications and websites... and while they are at it, they need to consider that about 80 PERCENT OF THE SYSTEMS IN THE WORLD ARE RUNNING WINDOWS.

You would almost think that Apple thinks if their applications and website are design to act stupid on a windows machine, that you will go out and buy Mac.

Sorry Stevie... won't work.

Sorry Stevie... won't work.

I used to be a software developer and that was my first impression as well.

I remember coding for COBOL, where every position in a RECORD was important to disk space management. I remember having fields in a table where you had 3 or 4 pieces of data, in a sequential string, and you had to positionally parse out the data element you needed, and push something back into the string of data positionally.

Try following a data dictionary with all that craziness. Try debugging undocumented legacy code when you had to deal with programming techniques like that. The modern day geek don't even know how easy they have it.

And the poor guy can never catch a break: he went into the hospital, and the team set up the defibrillator on his chest, and then left to go get the sedative. Meanwhile, someone came into the room to test the defibrillator-- not realizing he was hooked up. So yeah, he got shocked without any sedation whatsoever.

Arctic sea ice extent averaged over December 2010 was 12.00 million square kilometers (4.63 million square miles). This is the lowest December ice extent recorded in satellite observations from 1979 to 2010, 270,000 square kilometers (104,000 square miles) below the previous record low of 12.27 million square kilometers (4.74 million square miles) set in 2006 and 1.35 million square kilometers (521,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average.

Well, I mean, it's good news because it means his grades are high enough to get noticed. If he's getting invitations that indicates specific knowledge about him-- like, what his degree will be in-- or comes from a specific program-- like the biological sciences program-- that's a great, great sign.

More info on Lebanon:

BEIRUT— Lebanon's national unity government has collapsed after Hizbullah ministers and their allies resigned over a UN-backed tribunal investigating the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.

The state-run National News Agency announced Wednesday that 11 ministers were stepping down from the 30-member Cabinet headed by Western-backed Saad Hariri, the slain prime minister's son.

Hizbullah needed the backing of more than a third of the ministers to bring down the government.

The announcement took place as Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri was in the United States where he has been meeting with various US and United Nations officials.

US President Barack Obama was set to meet Wednesday with the Lebanese prime minister to discuss political tensions in his country stemming from the Hariri investigation, the White House said Tuesday.

The Hizbullah ministers had said they were planning to resign in the afternoon unless Western-backed Hariri — the son of the slain leader — agreed to their demand to convene an urgent Cabinet meeting over the tribunal crisis, Health Minister Mohammed Jawad Khalifeh said on Hizbullah 's Al-Manar TV.

Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Hariri said that he would "seek all means to reach solutions that can guarantee stability, calm and maintain national unity," Lebanon's Daily Star reported.

Hizbullah members are expected to be indicted by the Hariri tribunal, which will hand over its findings within "hours or days," according to a Wednesday report in Lebanese newspaper An Nahar.

Hizbullah has denounced the tribunal as an "Israeli project" and urged Hariri to reject any findings by the court, which has not yet announced any indictments.

Well, I mean, it's good news because it means his grades are high enough to get noticed. If he's getting invitations that indicates specific knowledge about him-- like, what his degree will be in-- or comes from a specific program-- like the biological sciences program-- that's a great, great sign.

Otherwise, it's just a very good sign.

I used to use Moslem myself sometimes as I was always under the impression that it was simply an alternate transliteration of the Arabic word, but I found out a couple of years ago that it has apparently become an issue due to the English pronunciation of Moslem (mozlem) having a completely different and negative meaning in Arabic.

Personally, I don't buy that the spelling was intentionally done that way as an insult, but I no longer use Moslem anymore since now that the negative meaning has been publicized, there are people who will purposely use it as a slur.

re: #537 CuriousLurker

I used to use Moslem myself sometimes as I was always under the impression that it was simply an alternate transliteration of the Arabic word, but I found out a couple of years ago that it has apparently become an issue due to the English pronunciation of Moslem (mozlem) having a completely different and negative meaning in Arabic.

Personally, I don't buy that the spelling was intentionally done that way as an insult, but I no longer use Moslem anymore since now that the negative meaning has been publicized, there are people who will purposely use it as a slur.

See [Link: hnn.us...]

Well that's a much more interesting background than I expected. Thanks!

Yep. It's a ridiculously hyper-religious bunch of "I'm the real victim here" crap. But the blood libel thing is really getting, well, my blood boiling.

The Blood Libel is something that Christians did to Jews, claiming that Jews ritually slaughtered Christians and used their blood in ceremonies. Jews were executed, lynched, imprisoned, and massacred over the blood libel. Over and over and fucking over. It is not something that a Christian gets to claim is being done to them when the situation bears no fucking resemblance.

We know this much right now: Palin does not possess the self-awareness, responsibility or composure to respond to crises like this with grace. This message - even at a time of national crisis - was a base-rousing rallying cry, perpetuating her own victimhood and alleged bloodthirstiness of her opponents.

But blood libel really hasn't entered the general vernacular. Even if it had, it still would retain a specific meaning.

Listen, the reason that the blood libel is so dangerous is that it takes the otherness of the Jew and makes it a fearful thing: Jews ritually slaughter animals. The blood libel transforms that into ritually slaughtering humans. It is an assault on the religion.

The worst accusation against Palin is that she's bloodthirsty. It has nothing to do with the blood libel.

"Witch hunt" retains it's meaning too; it means when someone is being persecuted despite a lack of evidence. That's how it's used.

No matter in what way you look at it, this is a complete misuse of the term 'blood libel'. It really needs the religious component, the perversion and attempt to vilify through otherness.

re: #533 jaunte

Words have meaning. Blood libel has a very specific meaning and when you start taking words and concepts out of their proper usage you reduce the word's value and usage.

I'd say that Palin's usage was incredibly stupid, particularly when the victim of the attack was herself Jewish. Palin isn't a victim here, and she certainly wasn't the victim of a blood libel under any tortured reading into the meaning of that concept.

565 Talking Point Detective  Wed, Jan 12, 2011 9:13:02am

I can chalk up the use of the term blood libel to ignorance. As such, I can get past it.

What I can't get past is that on a day when Obama is going to Tucson to speak at a memorial service, she sees fit to post a video focusing on herself - as if the tragedy of her being criticized somehow is equal to that of six people being killed.

I have to think that even Tea Partiers are going to be offended by this incredible display of self-centeredness.

Hmm you're right, and the more I think about it...

I think you've hit on why she used it I think. She's attempting to paint herself as victim, like she has before for her beliefs. She's attempting to equate the non-existent persecution of Christians in the same light as the persecution of the Jews. That's been her variation of the "Southern Strategy" all along.

i don't want to answer for Obdi, he generally takes care of that himself, but i think it's a bit of a different situation, given the degree to which Jews (a) were treated by Christians in the past and (b) are treated by far right, far left and especially certain Middle Eastern countries at present.

To add to Obdi's point, the blood libel is actually alive and well. Yes, the lethal superstition about witches is alive somewhere in Africa. But people do really believe in the blood libel in Europe, in Russia, in Islamist countries. In the former two not massively, perhaps, but the belief has really rejuvenated after the fall of the USSR and with the coming of the Internet.

Holocaust denial used to be a "highbrow" way to hate the Jews - no funny blood accusations, only the alleged rational and engineering arguments. But recently on HD sites the new blood libel books started to appear (cf. Fritz Berg's "Nazi Gassings Never Happend" page).

Similarly, in the Russian Empire Jews, after unsuccessful attempts of the tsarist government to make them "like everyone else" lost equality in the XIX century not because they were Jews by blood (the empire was a multi-national), not because they were non-Christians (there were Muslims, Buddhists, etc.), but because the Jewish religion - anti-Christian and misanthropic, stooped to the ritual killings in the environment of its particularly zealous adherents. Many cases of this ritual extremism were also proved in court (see, for example, a study in pre-revolutionary Ministry of Internal Affairs: V. Dahl. "Research on the murder by Jews of Christian children and of using their blood", St. Petersburg., 1844).

Sorry, that title has been revoked from Palin, and granted to this woman:

It was supposed to be a nice, quick moment. A photograph to help commemorate an important event.

Mary Reed and her daughter, Emma McMahon, were only going to be there for a few minutes.

Emma, a Tucson high-school senior, had been a congressional page for U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords over the summer. But things had been so busy, she never got a photograph of herself with the congresswoman. Giffords inspired her, and she wanted the memory.

So, on Saturday morning, the two went to Safeway, where Giffords would be holding a "Congress on Your Corner," a meet-and-greet event. Also along were Mary's husband, Tom McMahon, and son, 13-year-old Owen.

They were the second-to-last people in line to meet Giffords.

[...]

Then, Reed was shot again. And shot again. But she didn't move. She couldn't expose Emma.

"Yes, a mama bear," Mary said.

Emma remembers hearing screaming and seeing people fall to the ground, and feeling the warmth of her mother pushing her against the wall.

Well - it does have meaning other than that in common usage.

I'm reasonably well educated, not a total idiot, and I'm Jewish - and I had no idea of the etymology. I assumed it meant "big-time libel"until reading this thread.

I'm not saying the misuse is excusable - in that she has a responsibility as a public figure to use careful speech (just as does Biden, for example, when describing Obama as "clean-cut); but I'm just more bothered by the context.

Her need to make herself a victim has worked well for herself in the past. My suspicion is that she's gone too far this time. It's just so despicable given the circumstances. Anyone who doesn't jump off her bandwagon at this point is clearly chained on with partisan blindness.

"If we had a school that was, like, 80 percent high-poverty, the public would see the challenges, the need to make it successful," he said. "Right now, we have diluted the problem, so we can ignore it."

Oh yeah, like, all the schools are a little shitty, so let the poor folk all go to the same school so it gets really fubar, then we can fix it. Because all the poor kids are draggin down our good schools.

That's deep, man.

Here's the bit that just precedes your quote:

Tedesco, who has emerged as the most vocal among the new majority on the nine-member board, said he and his colleagues are only seeking a simpler system in which children attend the schools closest to them. If the result is a handful of high-poverty schools, he said, perhaps that will better serve the most challenged students.

They don't really oppose "social engineering". They just prefer to carry it out at the level of housing, rather than schools. (Same result, of course...)

But it doesn't have any meaning other than the religious etymology! It was pointed out that it was first used by Glenn Reynolds, so they may have just swiped it from him without bothering to figure out what it means.

That's always the question with Palin: Stupid or evil?

Interesting. Here's a blog post from someone using the term yesterday - fully aware of the etymology. I may very well be wrong about this:

To blame conservatives for the actions of an individual who has been described by his school acquaintances as either an apolitical pothead or a left-wing pothead is the worst kind of dishonesty. In fact, it bears a remarkable similarity to the “blood libel” that has for centuries been a staple of anti-Semitism.

Re Palin and now Briebart "blood libel' crap.

FFS. If Briebart has latched on and it ends up becoming a new right wing meme that idiots start parroting in their vitrol and sheer ignorance to what it actually refers too...

.... it will be the single most disgusting and disturbing 'meme' to come out of the wingy right to date.

And know unfortunately I don't think it's because Palin is stupid at least not in the way that she's clueless. I've read this blood libel thing in reference to Christians being persecuted and Christianity as a whole being persecuted, from the extreme Christian quarters before. Dominonist type thinking and some really theocratic stuff and ideology. It's lace with anti-semitism but more then then. Anti-everything that isn't about bringing about "God's world" in all aspects of society. Not that I think that this is particularly what Palin herself is after but it's one of those things that one may have come across in it's already corrupted and revised form so it just seems to fit.

The stupid that is Palin and whoever is writing the stuff for her is bringing it out into the mainstream rhetorical sphere with an utter lack of understanding of what they're actually suggesting or the consequences. At least I hope that's the case because if it isn't and done on purpose then Palin, has just gone to a whole other level in my books. Moved beyond just cluelesss and stupid to twisted and sick as well.

re: #625 jaunte

Yes I get that. Palin has always been that way. It's the connection to the really awful Christian dominionist type thinking that gets me. Ive seen it being used in relation to Christians being persecuted and God being persecuted and talk about the War between "good and evil" in the most cosmic of senses. Translated into the political sphere anything or anyone against Christians is evil to the point of being in league with Satan and demons. So yes the persecution idea is there and perhaps why the Palin cabal latched onto it. It's superficial corrupted understanding.

It's origins though, at least this corrupted understanding of it go conceptully a lot deeper to a base level. Liberals and everyone else in opposition aren't just politically different they're actually demonic and 'evil' at the most base religious sense. It is just bizzare thinking.

To see Palin use it, regardless of whether SHE understands that or even is clued into that stuff just makes me utterly sick to my stomach. It was bad enough coming across it on some small forum somewhere and just go 'wow' it's troubling that there are people that think that way. Now to see it, even if it's just a relatively superficial and cynical reference in the mainstream just makes me want to puke.

My tweet.

I actually wonder if there isn't a solution to this whole Conservative cult problem, a solution that derives from the root cause of the problem itself.

What if, somehow, these good folks were to get the message that, in fact, there had been a revolution led by patriots in DC, and the new President was a rock-ribbed constructionist who was making their taxes the lowest they'd been for 50 years, ending the national debt, appointing nine Republicans to the Supreme Court, and ending any form of national health care or Social Security, except of course for the Medicare and Social Security they're getting? And not only had he rolled back all progress of the last hundred years, but he'd also mandated teaching the controversy in schools, and declared war on some unpopular little fascist nation somewhere, a war in which our boys were constantly doing heroic things and taking few casualties. Sure, there'd still be some red meat - you could tell them from time to time about an uprising of liberal violence somewhere else in the US that was quickly quashed by fine, decent citizen soldiers, or something like that.

The point is, their media bubble is already entirely self-contained. It can tell them that their guns are being confiscated, that they pay huge taxes, and that Muslims have conquered small towns elsewhere in the US, and they believe it. It can tell them their government is a tyrannical dictatorship that bans fishing, and they believe it. If they were to believe that some other guy was actually President of the US, and that liberal revolts were being quashed in other small towns someplace, how would they ever know? Seriously - how would they ever find out different?

I'm only three-quarters joking.

The first and only African-American to hold the party's precinct chairmanship, Miller said he has been called "McCain's boy," and during the campaign saw a critic form his hand in the shape of a gun and point it at him.

"I wasn't going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday," Miller said. "I love the Republican Party but I don't want to take a bullet for anyone."

Hezbollah collapses Lebanese Government

Hezbollah and its allies forced the collapse of the government here on Wednesday, deepening a crisis over a United Nations-backed tribunal investigating the assassination of a former prime minister.

Eleven of the cabinet’s 30 ministers announced their resignations, a move that dissolves the government. They said they were prompted to act by the cabinet’s refusal to convene an emergency session to oppose the tribunal, which is expected to indict members of Hezbollah.

Ten of the ministers announced their resignations just as Prime Minister Saad Hariri was meeting with President Obama in Washington. The opposition had hoped that all 11 ministers would resign together, to bring down the government at that time and expose Mr. Hariri to the maximum embarrassment.

I think that ambiguity and what we're willing to accept from an artist or someone generally viewed as outside the social norm is interesting even when its disturbing. Roman Polanski is another case where the 'artist factor' comes into play.

Of course, it's probably near next to impossible to know what was going on "inside" the artists head... but there is circumstantial evidence.

Most of the woman he was attracted to were waif like, much, much younger than he was. He wrote very suggestive songs for them, almost like he was "role playing" some fantasy. He wrote a song for France Gall with was full of clever French triple-entendre, about lollipops, but was basically about oral sex. She was a teen, and supposedly (her account), she had no idea about the little hidden meanings and discovered for the first time, at an appearance in Japan, why there were some many pubescent boys preening over a French singer. This is not anecdotal.

Serge used the "push the limit" angle a lot. Maybe nothing, maybe everything, but as the dramatist, I have to finally decide on how to fill the lancune's and what realistically can go into those spots.

They'll say "It's Glenn Reynolds' fault! He said it first." Because he did, and the Wall Street Journal (formerly a rag with at least a FEW scruples) published it, with the headline "The Arizona Tragedy and the Politics of Blood Libel."

Not to excuse Palin, who is inexcusable, but she (or her script-writers) didn't invent this line; they purloined it as a good, strong talking-point from what was, to their minds, a very solid source.

I love this quote, actually:

J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami criticized Palin's use of the term blood libel.

"We hope that Governor Palin will recognize, when it is brought to her attention, that the term 'blood libel' brings back painful echoes of a very dark time in our communal history when Jews were falsely accused of committing heinous deeds," he said in a statement. "When Governor Palin learns that many Jews are pained by and take offense at the use of the term, we are sure that she will choose to retract her comment, apologize and make a less inflammatory choice of words."

I imagine that there are a few people here that aren't big fans of J Street (I am), but I think this is a very nice way to create a tactical advantage when you have a whiner like Palin.

Ah I didn't know that it had already been used. Changes my thoughts a bit if she wasn't the first one using it. Not quite as potentially nefarious now. She just potentially was putting her personal twist on it. I'm actually a bit relieved. I can go back to more just clueless and stupid.

re: #662 Jadespring

They're defending it by claiming that the term now has widespread political context, even though one of the two examples cited is Israel defending itself from repeated Arab and Palestinian claims of purposefully targeting Palestinian kids and engaging in the classic anti Semitic smear of the blood libel.

Further, claiming that just because Tony Blankley used it - improperly I might add - doesn't justify its use here either.

More here.

Yes that statement was quite politically smart. Really sets her up between and rock and hard place. I don't know enough to have an opinion about J-street except that at least this spokesman knows how to play smart with words. :)

Is the Cement Garden movie, which has Charlotte's heroine engaging in incest with her brother, part of the same pattern?

"It really, really, really annoyed me when Obama suggested that people might change their lifestyles to be less wasteful and consume less, and was met with mad, blinkered rage at that suggestion."

Dude, he was mocked for telling people to make sure their tires were properly inflated. Something that costs nothing and can save tons of dough and gas.

Not for nothing, but I called Peter King's office, and asked to be added to the list of people who it's illegal to be within 1,000 feet if you have a gun.

I encourage everyone to do the same.

And all your hyperventilating about Jews and how America is killing Iraqi children on behalf of Israel? What's your spin on that?

LOL Facts of a hyperbole situation? Okay, now you're reaching and freaking out a little too much! If jesus walked down the main drag in Arizona, do you think he would be well-received if he looked different than the image we've all seen for years now? Seriously, it's not that far-fetched to believe that someone would mistake him as being an illegal immigrant at this point! Our nation has gone mad and I don't even think jesus would survive the ridiculousness.

I know Kay is gone now, but I just want to comment here that Jesus, being an Israeli Jew, was surely pasty white, so why would the GOP not like him?

re: #203 albusteve

I don't like the idea of the POTUS speaking at the memorial for the shooting victims...no matter how you cut it, it politicizes the event...make an official statement from the WH then stand away...so shoot me

One of the dead was a federal judge, the rest were killed at a political event, while exercising their First Amendment rights. It seems fitting to me.
