Hate Mail of the Day

Feelin’ the love
LGF • Views: 29,304

My post yesterday about House Republicans voting against reality prompted a reader in Salt Lake City to fire up Internet Explorer 9 and use our contact form to communicate his carefully considered opinions about my criticisms of GOP climate change denial. (Warning: profanities left intact to preserve the full aroma.)

At 9:37 am, about 4 minutes after landing on our front page, he found exactly the right words:

are you a fag? you look and sound like a fucking fag. do u like dick in mouth and up your fat ass? I believe you do. do u enjoy swallowing cum? bet you do. I think your gayness causes global warming.

And yet, as concise as that statement clearly was, he remained unsatisfied. There was more inside him, crying out to be shared.

Six minutes later another email arrived from the same person, with the obviously fake return address ‘sciencerules@aol.com’ and the title ‘climate change science’ (hey! he tricked me into reading it by flattering me! doh!), expanding on this critique:

nice to know morons like you believe in junk science motivated by political correctness and left wing agenda. climate change is real alright, but it’s cyclical, not man caused. and THAT, is true science you fucking tool. I suppose you believe we caused the first ice age too? and the ice then to melt as well? what a useful idiot you and your pathetic little site has become. thanx for destroying our economy, and our human rights. asshat loser.

Unfortunately, since he used fake email addresses I can’t enter into an exchange of opinions with this gentleman, perhaps to our mutual enlightenment; more’s the pity.

Perhaps, in that case, his "human" rights are in no danger.

Though I disagree with you, Charles, on economic policy issues, it is baffling to me the level of ignorance many on the right have with respect to clear cut science FACT. The kind of vitriol evidenced by that email is alas too typical amongst those who blindly swallow political and religious dogma on the issues of evolution and global warming.

The American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science all have issued statements in recent years concluding that the evidence for human modification of climate is compelling. Of course, who knows what they get up to behind closed doors.

It always amazes me how incurious climate denialists are, how lazy and facile their arguments are. It's obvious they don't care enough about reality to learn the first things about the science they just know must be false, and yet they possess this boundless, arrogant confidence in their opinions. It's hard to know where to begin with such people, but here's a start understanding them:

I was thinking about this earlier today while watching all the wingnuts advocating for more nuclear plants while the disaster plays out in Japan. I really think the core of the issue for wingnuts is money. Oil companies and nuclear energy companies have loads of money to exchange for political favors. Solar and wind providers, not so much.
You can make a great conservative case for developing solar power. If you have efficient panels on your roof you are independent and self sufficient. It has nothing to do with ideology. It's just an excuse to pander to the companies with deep pockets.

I don't think nuclear power is right wing...there are supporters across the spectrum, including Obama I believe. Nuclear power is reliable in a way solar power just isn't. Solar plus wind could provide base load power in combination, but alternative technologies to date can really only be supplemental.

You can make a great conservative case for developing solar power. If you have efficient panels on your roof you are independent and self sufficient. It has nothing to do with ideology. It's just an excuse to pander to the companies with deep pockets.

It really isn't. It's about hating liberals, and things liberals like. It's not about anything else. It's not about debt, deficit, the economy, religion, ideology, jobs, or anything else, except hatred of liberals and stuff they like.

This week, Rush and others have been making vague mutterings about nuclear power and how this will make liberals either more angry or more fervent. It doesn't really matter what the connection is - they don't need a conspiracy connection a la Glenn Beck. The only recipe required is to mention the issue of the day (earthquake/nuclear power/economy/whatever) and follow it with some sort of negative mutter about liberals. That's enough. The issue is about finding more reasons to hate liberals, even if they're made up ones.

I've had the misfortune of being subject to FOX all week (VA hospital, FOX on all stations, all day). Today I learned how Obama and Democrats are failing miserably in leadership over the nuclear disaster, and sending mixed messages and contradicting each other, with sinister undertones about Obama creating more fear. That was quickly followed with learning how Democrats and teachers are indoctrinating children with pro-union doctrine by law, including another fucking replay of that stupid, godforsaken children's play that Tucker bloody Carlson compared to the Khmer Rouge. (I swear, the fucking shamelessness of FOX.) And, after a few Goldline ads, it was back to how Obama is golfing and picking NCAA brackets while the world burns and showing his weakness and possible complicity in the disasters unfolding everywhere.

It's got nothing to do with money. Just hate.

It seems to be true that those who are the most stridently antagonistic towards a group or a certain behavior have a deep attraction at work within them that they just can't acknowledge. Thus they lash out in ever greater torrents of rage till either they become openly violent or, and this does occur thankfully, something happens in their life where they finally have their eyes opened to what's going on inside themselves. Sadly that self awakening is all too rare.

I should add for emphasis that that was not spread over the day. That was over the space of fifteen minutes. For those who do not watch FOX, which I assume is most if not all of you, that is what wingnuts are indoctrinated with, all day, every day. When they're not watching, they're listening to the same. When they're not listening, they're reading that on blogs. Every minute of every day.

There is no room for reason in a mind that addled by hate. There's no way a reasonable argument can work its way in.

The thing about nuclear power is that everywhere where it is relied upon heavily, investment was underwritten by a federal government. The private sector will not pony up some $8 billion for one plant when something on the order of 1/2 default before being built, and were as we now see, there is the potential for huge liabilities and for all that investment to become worthless in a matter of days. It only happens in "socialist" countries like France and Japan.

Its all about banging on libz and in this particular case screaming about enviro-Nazis. There really isn't much anything else behind virtually any Republican stance on any particular issue besides hatred of libz, Dems, atheists, etc.

Its really mostly just about tribalism.

re: #82 Talking Point Detective

re: #23 Killgore Trout

That is an interesting point. The free market purists seem to be the ones beating the drum hardest for nuclear, but nuclear CANNOT exist in a free market. It's too risky and too expensive. So it's existence depends on government largesse: the same exact kind of largesse that those same people sneer at when they are discussing wind or solar.

Understand, I think nuclear has to be part of the solution here. It poses risks and challenges, but it is worth it. But the small government, free market folks have to eat their core principles to advocate for nuclear. Which they seem to do without breaking a sweat.

Principles?

The principle is use whatever they can to attack libz and environmentalists. Nuclear plants weren't built because they weren't a good private sector investment. At best, it would be a huge investment with a long wait for a ROI - when there are many other investments that would bring better returns, more quickly, without the risks. Even with fewer environmental restrictions and independent of Democratic opposition, nuclear power would not have been popular enough to garner enough support from Repubs to get the massive underwriting involved.

So, I'm watch the helo drop of water... supposedly 7.5 tonnes per shot... that's 7500 liters. It looks like about 5% actually lands where it is supposed to... if so that means about 375 liters hit the building on top... which is about 99 US gallons. Let's call it 100 gallons.

194 Shiplord Kirel  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 7:36:54pm

The helicopter drop was made from 300 meters altitude because of the radiation hazard. In the NHK video, relatively little of the water appears to have actually hit the target reactor. It appears to have dispersed too much during the long drop. I am wondering if they could extend a series of hoses several hundred feet from the chopper and dump the water through those to improve the accuracy.
These helicopters are Boeing CH-47s, License-built in Japan by Kawasaki. There are 54 of these in the Ground SDF (the army) and another 15 in the Air SDF. The Maritime SDF (navy) has 10 of the larger CH-53Es but I haven't seen this used in this operation yet.

I think the "real time" media is intensifying and spreading the fear, far more than the media was at the end of WWII. It isn't any better or worse, it's just exposure, if I may use that word.

There was no fear spread by the media in Japan during WW2. I used to be in a relationship with the daughter of Journalism Professor, who during WW2, was newspaper journalist in Tokyo . As he explained it, there was no direct dissent. It wasn't about fear of reprisal , he believed it was his patriotic duty to hold back some bad news and tone down that which is reported. It served no practical purpose to report things that would cause even more fear and panic.

These helicopter drops are just window dressing.

Each reactor produces enough heat to boil 60 gallons of water per minute. Water weighs 8 pounds per gallon. So 420 pounds per minute of water per reactor, 1260 pounds for all 3 reactors (not counting the storage pools.

7.5 tonnes of water is 16,500 pounds, or enough water for 40 minutes of cooling. In order to keep up with the reactors, these helicopters would need to dump water every 13 minutes, and with 100% accuracy.

These reactors are going to melt down. It's really just a question of when, and how much time to prepare the government has.

So, I'm listening to the streaming videos from Japan... and beginning to realize why the NRC (and the Brits and the Brazilians and the French) have upped the severity of the problem in spite of possibly offending the Japanese gov't.

When the defense minister says today is the last day to drop water, because the pools' water levels are too low and disappearing quickly, one gets the feeling that time is running out.

It seems to me that Kan and TEPCO are trying to quell any panic first and foremost. I don't blame them.

Using enough seawater to cool the reactor to 7 days will leave 10's of tons of salt in the reactor. Pumping seawater is just not feasible as anything other than a short term solution. Unless TEPCO can get the cooling systems active, there will be a meltdown. TEPCO knows this. They have probably told the Japanese government, who hasn't told anyone.

0301: As we know choppers resumed water drops on the plant today. Defence Minister Toshimi Kitazawa approved the operation as the radiation level was 4.13 millisievert per hour at an altitude of 1,000 feet, Kyodo reports.

From [Link: www.bbc.co.uk...] .

That's pretty high for a distance of 1000 ft away. Assuming containment (big assumption) we should expect radiation to reduce approximately 1/(4*Pi*distance^2).

This implies radiation levels of about 100 times higher at a distance of 30 meters, or 100ft from the reactor. About 2 hour of exposure at a distance of 100 meters from the plant would be enough to result in mild radiation poisoning, and about 8 hours of time would be enough to kill someone.

Every hour they can delay the meltdown will save evacuuees, by letting more of them get further.

re: #203 Charles

I started playing the Mac OS version of Bioshock, but I got killed right away, after the lengthy opening movie.

May have to watch one of those YouTube walkthroughs just to get started with this one.

The beginning is pretty difficult. The wrench is all about dodge and strike, you will get hurt. The pistol is all about head shots. Press Z to zoom certain weapons. Electroshock enemies in water whenever possible. Use inferno to make them jump into the water.

The first couple of Big Daddies have a steep learning curve. For the first Bouncer version use hit and run tactics, lurk near a door and use armor piercing ammo, the inferno and electro shock plasmids. If he strikes the ground and slows you, hit him with the electro shock and lose him through several doors. Bouncers run like the wind so don't turn your back on 'em unless they're shocked and you're sure you can lose them, otherwise keep switching between the gun, inferno, and electroshock while backing away. You can often lose them by turning several corners while they're shocked. The first Rosie a bitch too. Attack long range, hit and run. Don't stay in line of sight for too long because they're pretty accurate with the rivet gun and their proximity mines hurt. Use telekinesis to throw explosive barrels and gas tanks for big damage. Use inferno for decent damage over time. Big Daddies don't run to water and aren't hurt too bad by being shocked in it. Big Daddies laugh at the wrench, don't even think about it.

Telekinesis doesn't use much EVE and causes a lot of damage if you throw heavy objects. You can use it to shield you from gunfire and throw dead enemies into live enemies. Things get a lot easier later on after you have get the grenade launcher with mines and the crossbow with trap bolts.

Always save the Little Sisters, never harvest. That way you will get the Hypnotize Big Daddy plasmid early, then can use them as bodyguards and pit them against each other. Once you get the research camera research everything. You can photo each enemy or Little Sister four times.

Don't trust Pete, stash some weapons in his office before going back in after finding the camera. I recommend not picking up the grenade launcher he offers until after you've sent all your weapons through the pneumo tube.

That should get you through the first couple of levels.

No benefit of the doubt here...that 12 miles was done in about a day, and stragglers were rounded up over the subsequent days. They've told anyone within 20km (~12 miles) to evacuate and told everyone in 20-30km to lock themselves inside their homes.

What a charming mail... I realize this thread has likely moved on a bit from the topic, but it is worth commenting on the frothing hatred of morons and the fact that little more than fear and blind hatred define the unreasoning right.

We have Rush chortling that the Japanese are facing a terrible calamity because they manufactured the prius.

We have GOP scum commenting that gangraped 11 year old girls were asking for it.

We have endless attacks of a personal nature against the first lady.

We have the wingnuts endless squealing like whiny children that they are somehow the oppressed ones because the left is "so much more mean."

And that is just it, we are dealing with delusional fools who have reverted to the worst of seventh grade. The proper response to them should be stop your whining, or I will give you something to whine about. The left has been gutless for too long.

The first one kind of sucks, it's all about telekinesis bombs, inferno, and lots of running away. Lure them into view of a security camera and hit them with it, then photograph the action between them and the bots for big research scores. One thing to note is that the helos have to fly through the plumes, so they will have to fly through the isotope laced water droplets as well as through microscopic ash.

Thus the "radiation" level reported should not be thought to follow an inverse square law.

From the design of these things - several GE scientists resigning in protest over them back in the beginning ... just that for starters is scary enough. I cannot imaging what it must be like trying to get the pumps going with so much working against them. I've been in a couple of shipboard emergencies, back in the Navy days, that were life threatening but we did not have to deal with radiation on top of it.

Sorry responses are slow - I'm on a train southbound thru central CA - its tough typing and my link is thru my Android ... which lost the connection.

The "big assumption" as I stated was that there actually was containment. I think Tokyo Electric is not being honest about the level of containment breaches...which means spewing radioactivity. Listening to TEPCO and the Japanese government, everything is ok, levels not dangerous to human health. They are claiming radiation levels of a few mSv/hr "at the plant".

A left that did not suffer fools would have to rid itself of Pete Stark and Barbara Mikulski. The Dems are most unlikely to wean themselves of hacks, as any part will always have its share of fools and hacks.

You should also know that Bagua is blogstalking you. Again.

[waves to the Stalkers]

Bagua is always blog stalking me, ever since he was outed as a liar and a fraud on science matters multiple times.

I love how he used to go on and on about how nothing is ever certain in science, and that no predictive models are certain.

Outside of the the trivial philosophical nonsense like this could all be a dream and nothing is real, what kind of a deluded mental midget thinks such things? I remember the time I crushed him about certainties.

Take the orbit of the Earth around the sun. This was a mathematically motivated model of reality that was posited by Copernicus because it was vastly more elegant then epicycles.

It took Kepler, Galileo and Newton to put the full theory and observation together.

Does he deny that this is a 100% certain picture of reality? OF course he does without realizing it.

Then there was that paper he kept going on and on about that was retracted by the authors - even after it was retracted and dozens of counter examples were brought up. The man is an utter fool with delusions of grandeur. I would pity him if I didn't know he had a little shrine to me that he sacrificed kittens at every night.

To be entirely fair, Bagua is not a blanket hater. There are only a few people he targets (in ascending level of hate): Charles himself, Ludwig, Jimmah, and Iceweasel. But towards those people he can be quite nasty and his attacks on Iceweasel are far beyond the pale. Bagua, if you read this. I hope you change your ways. And if you truly do want to show your decency, then stop posting that anti-Iceweasel link. Because all else is just words as long as you keep posting it.

But it's time to rant again about the stupid, stupid media - photo 3 has a caption that reads:

A radiation detector marks 0.6 microsieverts, exceeding normal day data, March 15, 2011, near Shibuya train station in Tokyo.

No. That meter reads 0.6 microsieverts per hour, and from that meter face implies they are measuring cesium 137.

It's like the difference between miles, and mph - big difference.

Furthermore, the "sievert" is a unit that tries to include the impact of the human body... it's an interpretation, in other words, and not the same thing as the "Gray", which is the actual physical measurement.

I could easily imagine a situation where you have a big pool of oil under the ground that gets drained very rapidly. You now have a big empty space with a lot of weight on top of it. A collapse would seem likely.

As to drilling causing the major Earthquakes that come from plates grinding against each other, I doubt that sincerely.

The thing about Bagua that I don't miss though was the endless sniveling twostep. The man had a pathological need to bee seen as reasonable even after he had come out with the most outrageous lies. He wold snivel and amble and twist and out and out lie about what he had said. Eventually he became a laughing sock for it.

It was called the Douchebagua twostep.

Like nothing was ever certain in science...

What about the Earth's orbiting the sun...

I never denied that!

You said NOTHING was certain!

That is a law not some theory based on flawed data!

It's a theory based on good data! A law is just a really well established theory or definition. It is also a law that energy is conserved. If you trap more sunlight, you must get warmer.

That is a leftist hoax! You are twisting my words! You are not a scientist! NO scientist ever says anything is 100% certain!

What about the Earth orbiting the Sun?

I am so oppressed! Charles Ludwig is being mean again! Make him stop! (cries , pouts, becomes a stalker....)

Ohhh douchebagua was always the slimiest and silliest of regressed idiots. That is rally the thing about him, the slime factor. He tired so hard to convince folks that he was their friend, just like that creepy kid that you knew you needed to stay away from and then five years later found out he was arrested for sodomizing goats.

The entertaining thing is how much he values himself based on trying to claim I am not a scientist or that he is somehow smarter than me. Imagining that his fourth grade understanding of science bested me is the root of his fractured ego. I am his benchmark for success in all things. He obsesses about my dating life. He obsesses over every post I make.

He's just a creep, who I realize wishes could be me frankly. And he wonders why I would never give him my CV... Interesting.

Kyodo News reporting that ceiling of number 4 reduced to frame. Earlier on they mentioned reactors number 5 and 6 having some cooling problems. Anyone know if the reactors 5 and 6 are at the same location as 1,2,3,and4 or at another place?

Units 5 and 6 are next to each other and (I'm guessing) about a half mile Northeast of Units 1,2,3,4 according to older versions of the graphics that had been posted here. [Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

The pacific ocean gets a rather large dose.

I'd expect a lot of mutated fish, crustaceans, molluscs, cnidarians, etc. There may be an evolutionary radiation in the plankton food web. Especially in organisms with lifecycles that complete in days or hours.

456 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:06:11pm

re: #454 daddylawbucks

There are no stable isotopes of U. U238 though has a half life of almost 5 billion years so it's not very radioactive. U235 has a half life in the hundreds of millions of years. U234 has a half life of less than a million years and is thus very radioactive. Accelerated fissioning, by concentrating U so whenever an nucleus decays the daughter products will hit another U nucleus (the goal of both weapons and power supply) brings about chain reactions... however the U235/U234 concentration in power rods is so low to keep the chain reaction from turning into an explosion. Other daughter products (such as Cs, I, etc.) are radioactive on much shorter scales.

So, in practical terms the used rods are a problem for a long time. Which is why Yucca Mt. project has to plan for thousands of years.

462 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:19:00pm

re: #460 daddylawbucks

This is the achilles heel of nuclear power, as developed since WWII - Storage of the waste. Those Fukushima reactors have old rods still there because there is no where else to put them.

One can recycle them, of course, and pull out just the U238 (to be used as a heavy metal to make bullets, etc.), and pull out the various short lived isotopes of various elements for medical and other uses, but apparently these latter needs are well met by the few reactors commercially in the business of supplying such products.

463 DaddyLawBucks  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:20:44pm

Not to be naive, but you can't just dump the hot stuff in a deep ocean area?

466 DaddyLawBucks  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:24:44pm

Based on what you have explained, I take it that the site of the broken reactors is going to be a sort of monument to this disaster for at least a century, with the hot core elements buried in concrete.

467 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:29:34pm

re: #466 daddylawbucks

Well, when contained in water the rods' heat is carried away by the water, so the rods don't melt. The rods are clad so they don't dissolve in the normally pure (not salt) water, too.

When the rods melt they will of course vaporize the metal slowly, so the air gets filled with minute particles of the material, which gets carried in the air and lands here and there, wherever the wind blows.

However, long term storage of nuclear waste has always been an issue, one we tend to ignore... until it comes back to bite us in the ass.

468 Prononymous, rogue demon hunter  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:29:38pm

re: #463 daddylawbucks

I don't know the chemistry of uranium + seawater at all. I'd imagine it wouldn't stay put though. Seawater is very corrosive with a ton of various ions to interact with.

It wouldn't be good to just play with the global ecosystem like that, IMO. It might bioaccumulate in various populations if it started spreading, possibly in some food species. Even if it did stay put, who knows what kind of damage it would do in the immediate ecosystem.

469 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:33:16pm

re: #468 prononymous

Yes, that they are using seawater indicates they have given up saving the plant. The high temperature will accelerate the corrosion of pretty much any metal or material. All they are trying to do now is avert a disaster.

BTW, I wouldn't worry about polluting the sea with radioactive isotopes. The ocean already contains vastly more U and Th than what is at Fukushima.

470 Prononymous, rogue demon hunter  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:38:39pm

re: #469 freetoken

Yes, though the existing radioisotopes are spread over a massive volume. Couldn't this release have very high concentration in localized areas?

471 DaddyLawBucks  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:42:52pm

It seems that above ground storage for substantial time periods ( you are talking decades? ) is going to be a problem, especially in an earthquake area. That's why "dumping" the rods into deep ocean seemed like an alternative. That glowing fish issue is a problem........

472 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:43:19pm

re: #470 prononymous

Any soluble compounds of U, Th, Cs, or I will quickly be spread around millions of cubic miles of ocean water. There is a strong current heading northward along the Japanese eastern coast.

473 DaddyLawBucks  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:47:38pm

Are the reactor waste products stuff that could be used to make nukes? Or is it just dangerous because of the radiation?

re: #472 freetoken

Okay, true enough about the current. Hopefully it will disperse it before significant accumulation. Though we should keep in mind that anything planktonic moves along with whatever is dissolved in the current. Especially non-motile organisms such as diatoms.

476 freetoken  Wed, Mar 16, 2011 11:54:51pm

re: #473 daddylawbucks

If one fires a proton at a U nucleus you get Pt... normally the decay products in rods for power plants would only have microscopic amounts of Pt.

However, the rods all told (and there are thousands of them in Japan) probably have enough U234/U235 to make a uranium bomb... something that is always an issue. As such, security around nuke plants is supposed to prevent theft.

Many years ago I was driving through the desert in Imperial county here in California, on a deserted back road, and I came upon a slow moving small convoy made up of one semi and two CHP vehicles. The semi was hauling a large (and obviously heavy) container made out of metal. It didn't take me long to figure out what it was - nuclear material. They let me pass quickly. Hauling such material is a risk - what if someone had hijacked said shipment... drove to Lake Mead, set off a conventional bomb to destroy the container, and then put the contents into the water? The water supply for millions of people would have been contaminated.

There's always a risk.
