Trump Goes Birther

The Birther mind-virus claims another victim
Wingnuts • Views: 28,282

Donald Trump says he may run for President as a Republican, so naturally he’s pandering to the Birther majority of the right wing base.

“Let me tell you, I’m a really smart guy. I was a really good student at the best school in the country. The reason I have a little doubt, just a little, is because he grew up and nobody knew him,” Trump said in the interview that aired Thursday.

“If I got the nomination, if I decide to run, you may go back and interview people from my kindergarten. They’ll remember me. Nobody comes forward. Nobody knows who he is until later in his life. It’s very strange,” the Celebrity Apprentice host added. “The whole thing is very strange.”

This CNN article has a great dead-pan correction to Trump’s idiocy:

Katherine Nakamoto, Obama’s kindergarten teacher, described the then-five-year old to the Maui News in 2009: “He was a cute, likable, heavy build-child. I could visualize Barry smiling, dressed in his long-sleeved, white shirt tucked into his brown Bermuda shorts, and wearing laced shoes.”

Trump went to a military academy because he was having trouble in school. He split his college years between Fordham and Penn. No graduate degrees. Good schools? Sure. Best school in the country? None of them qualify. Loudmouth, born on third base asshole.

I'm not even sure why anyone is paying attention to Trump. He's a blowhard businessman of very questionable skill (Outside selling himself) that wants back in the spotlight since his TV show has long since stopped bringing in viewers. He clearly isn't talking from any even shallow beliefs and has no chance of going anywhere, even if he actually intended to run, which I highly doubt he does.

* Correction: He was apparently referring to Somali pirates, not Russia, when talking about "wiping them out of the sea." I misread the transcript from ABC and regret the error. Nevertheless, the larger point about Trump's ridiculousness stands.

There is no way Trump will ever be President of the USA. He is in this for the publicity, he is a publicity whore.

Is there any GOP candidate that can appease the guanomanic wing of the party in the primary and still get elected in the general?

Or is it more likely that a backroom deal will be struck at the convention to jettison the crazy and select someone who is actually electable?

I think I would pay. The GOP debates will write the Obama campaign ads for them. They won't need an opposition research team, Youtube will be enough. I'm beginning to think the GOP nomination process and the ultimate nominee will hurt the GOP terribly down ticket as well.

Plus, Trump has created and successfully marketed exactly one thing: his brand. The actual businesses (casinos, real estate) are only sputtering along. He took good money he inherited, turned it into a leveraged tower of turd, went bankrupt, then started the process over again. If he were a successful businessman, he wouldn't be whoring himself on TV. Don't see much of Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg et al on FOX TV, do you?

I think Trump likes being a businessman on TV more than he likes actually running a company.

Jobs and Gates are passionate about their product, and getting it out there, as well as making money.

The blog post quotes Trump saying about Obama: "he grew up and nobody knew him." This statement by Trump is just plain silly. He implies there was something secretive or furtive about Obama's family. What on earth is the basis for this statement? From everything I've read about Obama's family, his grandparents and mother were perfectly ordinary working people. I believe the apartment where the Obamas lived in 1961, when the future president was born, was still used by the Obama family into 2008, and may still be used by the family now. For Trump to say "nobody knew him" is nonsensical.

The sad reality is that people are increasingly capitalizing on a massive fault in the way the average person thinks. If you keep saying the same lie or falsehood long enough and loud enough, a lot of people will start to believe it, regardless of how insane, unsupported, clearly untrue, ridiculous, etc. it may be. It doesn't even need to be grounded in any sort of reality...which is why so much stuff you hear out there isn't.

I don't like what's going on, but this is what the culture wars and the identity politics in America have wrought over the last 30-40 years. Each party has had candidates that most reflect the people who have been most inclined to vote for them in elections. These candidates do not represent all Republicans, but they do represent the base of the GOP. If you look at the two parties demographics (ethnicity, age, socio-economics, geographic, etc.) it makes sense that the Democratic Party would eventually produce a Barack Obama and that the GOP would eventually produce all of these people.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 192,000 in February. Job gains occurred in
manufacturing, construction, and several service-providing industries. Since a recent
low in February 2010, total payroll employment has grown by 1.3 million, or an average
of 106,000 per month. (See table B-1.)

Manufacturing employment rose by 33,000 in February. Almost all of the gain occurred
in durable goods industries, including machinery (+9,000) and fabricated metal pro-
ducts (+7,000). Manufacturing has added 195,000 jobs since its most recent trough in
December 2009; durable goods manufacturing added 233,000 jobs during this period.

Construction employment grew by 33,000 in February, following a decline of 22,000 in
January that may have reflected severe winter weather. Within construction, specialty
trade contractors accounted for the bulk of the February job gain (+28,000).

Employment in the service-providing sector continued to expand in February, led by
a gain of 47,000 in professional and business services. Employment services added
29,000 jobs, and employment rose by 7,000 in management and technical consulting.
Within employment services, the number of jobs in temporary help services edged up
over the month.

Health care employment continued to increase in February (+34,000). Over the prior
12 months, health care had added 260,000 jobs, or an average of 22,000 jobs per month.

Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 22,000 in February, with half
of that gain in truck transportation (+11,000).

Employment in both state and local government edged down over the month. Local government has lost 377,000 jobs since its peak in September 2008.

Steve, now you're just being purposefully dense. It's still a crisis, but we're climbing out. Given that he's gotten no cooperation or any meaningful involvement from the right sided Congress critters he's managed to keep things from getting worse and in fact many things are better. Unemployment just dipped down to 9% not to long ago.

Under Bush the unemployment went up 2.2% between when he took office and when he left.

Obama was facing an unemployment rate of 8.5% when he took office, and has it down to 9.5% now from a high of 10.5%

Are things perfect, no, but given the amount of time, Obama's record is much better than the guy whose incompetence led to this mess.

re: #36 moderatelyradicalliberal

If he were president, he'd just file bankruptcy and tell our creditors "I ain't got it".

Which is how massive debt has been dealt with throughout history. When countries default they come back stronger than before.

I'm not saying a country should borrow intending to default, but as my favorite author puts it, stripping ourselves bare to pay the debt is foolish.

Also, economic depressions are a common method of dealing with massive debt. The depression wipes them out. The problem is the damage done to society in the problem.

That's what things like welfare, unemployment insurance and public health care are for; to relieve the effects of such hard times on society. It's one of the main reasons I oppose the 'conservative' policies. When times get hard, and they always do, hard times become desperate times without those protections.
