Tech Note: IE7 Bug Workaround
I’m glad to announce that the Internet Explorer 7 bug I described yesterday has been worked around, and IE7 no longer crashes when loading LGF.
LGF reader “samgak” deserves the hat tip for finding the solution: IE7 has a serious bug in its CSS parser, that strikes when you use a CSS attribute selector with the “value” attribute, like this:
form#newssearchform button[value="pix"] {
margin-right: 0;
}
So I just gave that element an ID and used that instead:
form#newssearchform button#srpix {
margin-right: 0;
}
Less elegant, but it doesn’t cause IE7 to go into vapor lock.
While testing this fix, I discovered that I also had to revert back to jQuery 1.5.2 for IE7, because another IE7 bug is causing jQuery 1.6 to go into an infinite loop, and we all know how painful that can be.
I suggest that if you’re still using IE7 and you don’t want to switch away from your beloved Explorer, check out Internet Explorer 9. It’s a great improvement over previous versions — much faster and much more compatible.
