Here’s an open thread for Saturday morning, while I take care of a few non-blog items….

(Be back a bit later with a post on the latest claims made by the Breitbart camp followers, as they desperately try to deflect attention away from their idol’s irresponsible, reckless behavior with that infamous explicit photo of Rep. Weiner. This one will be fun.)

Enjoy your day...I've already taken a bike ride and beached the dogs and it's only 10am! I think I'll throw in a load of laundry and go test drive some cars next.

Got back from shul a little bit ago . Had a double shot of Old Crow bourbon at the schnapps table at the start of the kiddish lunch. Now the missus and I are going to take a nap. After some rest, I will continue to ignore politics by working on our house and on my old VW.

It is meant to be a day of rest. Naps are, in my book, practically a commandment.

Long weekend here in Germany: Pentecost Sunday and Monday.

Funny, when I got here, I had to ask a dozen Germans just what they were celebrating before I found some to explain it to me, most of them just said "It's a day off, I really don't care".

Will be camping out in an apple orchard outside Frankfurt playing music.
They call it "Pfinsten" here, so we will be plaing a lot of stuff by the Pfingsten Trio.

And Bruce Pfingsteen.

What I find most repellent about him is the constant, passive-aggressive "poor little me" martyr act, as well as the endless barrage of comments that leave me thinking, wow, you really believe we're dumb enough to fall for that?

I just have a zero-tolerance policy for that kind of thing.

Isn't it strange? All those godless Europeans have tons of official religious holidays. In Holland almost nobody I know ever goes to church, not even for Christmas and Easter, yet they get TWO days off for things like the Assumption of the Virgin, and Pentacost. The only people my age who even know why these days matter are historians.

There is a problem, though, with these clustered holidays. All the odd religious ones, and the Queen's birthday, and Liberation Day, and May Day, all happen in a 6-week period between late April and mid-June. It is impossible to plan anything in these weeks without being tripped up by some holiday, so nothing gets done. The trash doesn't get picked up. As an anal, hard-working American who lives (sometimes) in a European city, all these things are incredibly annoying.

Mohammed is suspected in Kenya of involvement in two attacks in Mombasa on November 26, 2002. One was the truck bombing of Paradise Hotel, in which 15 were killed. He also attempted bombings in the kaba and the hajj pilgrimage. When he was 13 years old he bombed his own family due to anger.

The Bavarians get the Assumption of the Virgin on August 15th, the rest of the country doesn't. But most Germans get:

Good Friday and Easter Monday

May Day (not a religious holiday, the European Labor Day)

Feast of the Ascension, moveable based on Easter, but always a Thursday
so most folks just take one of their 17+ days of vacation and make a four-day weekend out of it.

Corpus Christi -likewise a Thursday (Why do they name a holiday after a town in Texas, and why don't they celebrate the Feast of St. Lubbock?)

And Pentecost.

Then no holidays until October 3rd (Reunification Day), so the por folks have to bridge the gap with some of their remaining 20-odd days of vacation time...

...Now the missus and I are going to take a nap...

Taking 'nap' literally & not as a euphemism:

10-15 minutes of unstructured meditation works as well for me as a 60-90 minute nap.

I never would have guessed this & realized it purely by chance. Nodding off one afternoon, I decided to deal with my meditation procrastination before napping. After the meditation timer buzzed, I was surprised to be no longer sleepy. As a rule, I don't need the nap even if I doze off during meditation.

It works for me. Others' results may vary.

Iran has been caught red-handed in 10 different attempts in recent years to transfer weaponry to terrorists throughout the Middle East, including a recent case, in April, when a shipment of advanced missiles was caught en-route to Taliban forces in Afghanistan, according to a United Nations report obtained Thursday by The Jerusalem Post.

...He also attempted bombings in the kaba and the hajj pilgrimage...

And there's the money quote that lets you know these terrorists are full of shit when they call this "holy war." They'll discard the most basic tenets of Islam just to hurt and maim people who don't submit to them.

There may not be a "true" Islam that is wholly a religion of peace or war, but AQ, the Taliban, and their ilk are just waving about the Quran and Shariah as a cover for inflicting their base instincts on other people. Their piety is narcissism with a vapor-thin layer of theology over it.

Nutjob authoritarian death fetishists. Fuck 'em.

Yeah, I just saw he was going to "seek treatment" (generic). I was wondering what sort of "treatment" he was seeking. So very glad to hear about this particular rehab!

A year with the Trappists wouldn't hurt.

Rehab for being a dumbass. Red Foreman runs it. You get his foot up your ass until you get with the program.

Oh we're way beyond that!

You watch, there's a sex tape with Paris Hilton, I just know it.

You know, there was a time when, as a society, we believed that addiction was a matter of weak will and moral failing, and we treated drunks and drug users accordingly.

Then we learned more about the human brain, and realized that addiction was in many cases a function of the brain, not something that could be treated by tough love alone.

Then we started discovering other addictions.

Now, I think we may be at a point where I'm ready to simply say, "Not sending dirty pictures over the Internet is simply a matter of willpower. Not everything that feels good and is bad for you is an addiction."

No kidding. He knew damn well the wingnuts were stalking him, and gifted them a sex scandal on a silver platter. That kind of reckless stupidity - to play right into the hands of your enemies - may indeed make one unfit for higher office.

Hell, if you're going to do sleazy things, at least have the brains to do it in a way that won't make it so ridiculously easy to get caught...

hehe Agreed. Actually a little marriage counseling may not be a bad thing in this instance.

The "reward system" of the brain--the dopaminergic neurons--are like a giant rabbithole of blurring the lines between mental state and physiological state. Social rewards like compliments trigger the very "get high" ganglia that narcotics like opium do; insults actually trigger ganglia that physical pain. Munchausen people inflict physical harm so they can receive social rewards. The trade we made for sapience was to open the door on some really effed-up wiring issues with our head-meat.

Whether any of this adds up to Weiner having a genuine therapeutic issue is a whole 'nother ball of wax. "Rehab" for those of affluence, has become a kind of secular atonement ritual...and, often as not, no real work is being done on the issues that sent them there. Hopefully Weiner's paying a therapist to lay out exactly how bad he screwed up and how to practice not being a lecherous dickhead.

Uh...literally. Unlike a certain Jewish (by birth...I have no idea if he is observant in any way) politician from Brooklyn, I keep my personal matters private.

I just got back from the auto parts store where I got some stuff for the old VW Bug. Funny thing. Yesterday I was underneath it changing the oil. I noticed a few spiders crawling underneath the car in the garage. I was wondering, "Why are these spiders attracted to my VW Bug?"
