Moronic Convergence: Climate Change Deniers, Creationists, and Anti-Muslim Bigots Meeting at UCLA

It’s a kookfest!
Wingnuts • Views: 32,954

Today at UCLA, a group of high profile climate change deniers are featured at a conference titled: “Big Footprint: Is Green the New Tyranny?

By itself this is nothing special; climate “skeptics” are always having these echo chamber conferences, to keep the deluded masses fully stocked up with hooey. But this time, the conference is sponsored by a far right front group called the “American Freedom Alliance” — an organization that also vigorously promotes creationism and anti-Muslim bigotry: Climate sceptics flirt with intelligent design and Islamophobic group.

I’ve said for years that climate change deniers have a lot in common with creationists; now the connections are becoming explicit.

The American Freedom Alliance is, perhaps, best known for its on-going legal action with the California Science Center over the cancellation of an AFA event to be held at the centre in 2009 at which it intended to screen a “teach the controversy” film called Darwin’s Dilemma, which explores the “Mystery of the Cambrian Explosion in Fossil Records”. At the time, Avi Davis, executive director and senior fellow of the American Freedom Alliance, said: “New scientific evidence makes it vital that we take a close look at the numerous inherent scientific problems of the Darwinian theory of evolution.” The AFA has subsequently fought the case on the grounds of freedom of expression.

But far more controversial than its dabbling in the “evolution v intelligent design” debate is the AFA’s stance on Islam. One of the AFA’s three fellows is a highly provocative figure called Robert Spencer who has willingly stoked the “Barack Obama is a Muslim” meme, challenged the building of the “Ground Zero mosque”, and runs a controversial blog called Jihad Watch.

For example, in 2010, he used his blog to offer his support to the far-right English Defence League: “The EDL is standing up to violent thugs from both the Left and the increasingly assertive Islamic communities in Britain, and they deserve the support of all free people.”

The AFA’s funding is unclear, but tax returns (pdf) for the Fairbrook Foundation - a charitable foundation set up by computing multi-millionaires Aubrey and Joyce Chernick, which supports a wide range of Jewish and pro-Israeli groups - show that the foundation has donated more than $100,000 to the AFA since it was founded in 2007. It has also directly funded Spencer’s Jihad Watch, too. (A Politico investigation last year showed how the Fairbrook Foundation has funded the David Horowitz Freedom Center, which itself has funnelled nearly $1m to Jihad Watch in recent years. Tax returns (pdf) for the David Horowitz Freedom Center also show that it paid Spencer a salary of $131,981 in 2009.)

"Climate sceptics flirt with intelligent design"

Wait... you're telling me they're only flirting? I thought these two causes had gotten hitched a long time ago!

Talk about a collusion of delusion!

Well, it's not really surprising. When you believe in one benevolent, unknowable force ("The Free Market"), it's not that far a journey to believing in another.

“Big Footprint: Is Green the New Tyranny?”

Interesting question, as opposed to the present day Tea Party tyranny?

Sophia Lamb: Ask yourself, Andrew -- what is your "Great Chain of Progress" but a faith? The chain is a symbol for an irrational force, guiding us towards ascension -- no less mystic than the crucifixes you seize and burn.

Now if only "Would you kindly" worked.

Is Green the New Tyranny?

Well, of COURSE. Any effort to minimize toxic industrial by-products is exactly the same as Stalin's purges, Hitler's final solution, Mao's cultural revolution, and Pol Pot's return to the Year Zero.

First "scholarly" conference I've seen to feature a dead science-fiction writer on one of its panels, though given the company, it probably doesn't hurt to be deceased...

c. Is there an Element of Religiosity to Global Warming Advocacy?
Panelists: Michael Chrichton (dec’d.), Lord Monckton, Anne McElhinney, Michael Coffman
Location: California Room

Here's how the conference describes its mission:
"But the contemporary Green Movement, represented by a variety of national and international institutions, may have far exceeded its original mandate to protect the Earth. In modern times it has launched
aggressive campaigns against modern society, including attacks on the nuclear family, denunciation of traditional religion and the repudiation of free enterprise."

Little wonder that this conference has not been, shall we say, widely publicized in the UC community. Especially the faculty in Environmental Science seem to have had no idea that it was happening.

UCLA explains that the Faculty Center is a private club, not part of the University. Still, I'd have expected some kind of protest from somebody.

Spencer's blog has fallen on tough times. The content is the usual stuff but he seems to average about 10 comments per thread. Maybe I'll check and see if he's dong better next year.

That depends on what his belief in human exceptionalism is based on. If it's based on the existence of a soul in humans but not in other animals he is just as bad as the other IDiots.

He does his job, raising a ruckus about animals getting 'rights', and the slippery slope to Gaia-worshippers taking over.

In case you missed it: Ecuador and Bolivia have granted (literally) “rights” to “nature,” that are co-equal with those of humans. And Bolivia has stated it will soon try to obtain a UN Treaty doing the same.

Don’t roll your eyes. There are some very powerful forces that seek to mutate environmental advocacy into a neo earth religion. Also, to make any major exploitation of natural resources a “crime against peace” co-equal to crimes against humanity, known as “ecocide,” also intended for UN consideration.

The increasing radicalism that is the horse pulling environmentalism’s cart would destroy human exceptionalism and, in the process, create mass poverty. Think about it. Viruses are part of nature. So are pond scum and flies.

I think home food gardening may become more common but the obesity epidemic and health related issues from processed foods is getting close to critical. Something is going to have to change soon.
I do hope food gardening catches on. I'm planing a greenhouse extension for the house. I'm a little worried that it might be a problem when times comes for me to sell. I think most homebuyers might be intimidated or think it's too much work to maintain or something.

The Black Swan and the Bell Curve

We don't actually have to resort to black swan theory, even if geoscience is one of its more obvious applications. The politically conservative Chicago jurist Richard A. Posner, in Catastrophe: Risk and Response (2004), has pointed out that the more uncertain we are about mainstream climate projections, the more we should be worrying about worse-than-worst case scenarios. Thus, he suggests, climate skeptics are shooting themselves in the foot when they emphasize uncertainties. By the symmetrical logic of the Bell curve, if climate scientists are underestimating the possibility things may be not nearly as bad as they predict, they also are underestimating the probability they will be much worse.

Gay Girl in Damascus blogger unveiled as man

A blogger who claimed to be a lesbian Syrian-American posting from Damascus, and who was reportedly kidnapped by Syrian security forces, has been outed as a married man from Edinburgh in Scotland.

Last week, a post on the Gay Girl in Damascus blog claimed three armed men had seized its author, Amina Abdallah Araf al Omari, while she was walking to a meeting.

That post led to international media attention focused on Ms Abdallah's apparent abduction.

However, doubts emerged about the blogger's identity when a London woman said photos widely published as being of Ms Abdallah were actually of her.

Following an investigation by reporters and others, a new post on the blog admits the whole story was concocted by Edinburgh student Tom MacMaster.

H/T Pam_Spaulding

Viewpoint of a black Republican: Racist cartoon of Obama forces me to leave GOP - sacbee.com: [Link: goo.gl...]

From the Sacto Bee

That op/ed is so full of win, even for a Southern white boy like me; as a matter of fact, it shouldn't matter what race, gender, or sexual orientation you are. The bottom line is that the GOP is, at best, feckless and spineless at reining in the crazies, bigots, and racists, just as the Dems are feckless and spineless in calling out and lambasting the GOP for their inaction (or the worst case, their complicity).

This quote says it all for me:

There are a number of Republicans (and Democrats) who will view my switch to "decline to state" as a net gain for the Democratic Party. However, I reject the theory of zero-sum politics which claim we live in a binary world of Democrats and Republicans, where a lack of support for one side works only to empower the other.

Having now been active in both major political parties, I've discovered the common prohibited activity is critical thinking.

President Ronald Reagan once famously said, "I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me," and I can now say that I have been abandoned by both Democrats and Republicans.

In order to stay true to myself, my family and values, the only rational, responsible option is independence.

Damn straight...

The current right's dislike of intellectuals, flippantly referring to them as elites, and discounting the scientific method(s) in light of their own frequently mistaken common sense, combined with their reliance on rhetorical tricks in place of thoughtful and logical arguments has led them to believe focusing on perceived inconsistencies in the left's arguments makes them morally and logically superior.

re: #160 ProLifeLiberal

Apparently, the AKP is having a strange situation. They got more votes than ever but lost 15 seats.

This is explainable. They are winning a massive amount of votes in safe areas, but losing votes in more contentious areas. Meanwhile, the hard nationalist right lost 18 seats, while the Kemalist party gained 23. Independents, mostly Kurds, won 9 more seats.

The outright Islamist Felicity Party lost half of their support. Most of this was picked up by the People's Voice Party.

It of course doesn't show up under "top" tweets under that tag - you have to look under "all". However, maybe if some of you would go retweet it (it's the second one on that list) it might make it to the "top"?

Americans also need to hear their President clearly and unambiguously articulate foundational beliefs and why they are important to our nation. He doesn't do such a good job of this, and as we saw with the healthcare-bill process his economy of eloquence (not for every issue but for many), while it doesn't de-rail back-room negotiations, it does leave a vacuum for loud-mouth pundits to fill.

It's a bummer the finals are on ABC.. We have to watch all the crappy ABC preview shows during the commercials

re: #245 freetoken

Americans also need to hear their President clearly and unambiguously articulate foundational beliefs and why they are important to our nation. He doesn't do such a good job of this, and as we saw with the healthcare-bill process his economy of eloquence (not for every issue but for many), while it doesn't de-rail back-room negotiations, it does leave a vacuum for loud-mouth pundits to fill.

In theory, I agree. But there is always politics and the cost of doing business to muddy the waters.

How does Obama sound high minded and at the same time allow and turn a blind eye to the waivers, etc.?

I had the "pleasure" of catching a years old interview with Phil Donahue and Eddie Vetter railing against the Iraq war, Bush's imperial fascism, the evils of waterboarding, Downing Street Memo and the war on terror. I'm reminded that I don't regret my neocon years.

I hope he wasn't hoping to get much understanding from the commenters on the SacBee site.

I feel so frustrated right now. I worked hard on the page.

You have every right to feel frustrated. Take a couple of deep breaths and decide what to do until your emotions calm down.

I'm just glad the that Lebron lost. For him to win after that team switch would make him completely insufferable (if he isn't already).

Americans need to hear just how extreme some of these candidates truly are. It needs to be exposed.

It'll never happen. That would destroy an entire political party, which in turn would destroy many careers in the journalist and stand-up comedian fields. We can't have that.

You have no idea of what you talk about. There has been warming in 10 years and carbon emissions declined due to the economy but rebounded with a bang in the last year.
