The Moebius Strip at the Center of the Galaxy

The universe has one boundary and is non-orientable
Science • Views: 31,529

Using the European Space Agency’s infrared Herschel Space Observatory, astronomer Sergio Molinari discovered a gigantic Moebius Strip at the center of our galaxy: Milky Way’s Core Hides Big Twisted Ribbon.

A space telescope peering into the Milky Way galaxy’s dusty core has spied a colossal twisted ribbon of supercooled material.

Until now astronomers had only seen bits and pieces of the ribbon’s 600-light-year-wide superstructure, which resembles the symbol for infinity (∞).

“We have a new and exciting mystery on our hands, right at the center of our own galaxy,” said astronomer Sergio Molinari of the Institute of Space Physics in a press release. Molinari and others describe the strange ribbon in an upcoming Astrophysical Journal Letters study available on arXiv.org.

Astronomers previously studied gas-piercing infrared images of the Milky Way’s cloudy barred core, but they didn’t have photos with resolution high enough to discern the ribbon’s entire structure. Molinari and others found the ring by aiming the European Space Agency’s infrared Herschel Space Observatory toward galactic center.

Where are the globular clusters?

It's symbolic, silly. A pink ribbon doesn't show actual globes.

Although astronomers aren’t certain why the two lobes of the ring twist upwards, they suspect the gravitational tug of nearby galaxies — perhaps Andromeda some 2.5 million light-years away — is responsible.

Now that is a stupid sentence by an ignorant Wired writer.

That's way neat. I'm glad that even if all science funding in the US gets slashed, there are other parts of the world where science will still be practiced.

It won't be long before they catch up in number of research facilities.

Big Government invading homes, seizing private property in Alaska

Two ingredients that sit harmlessly in most most kitchens are actually barred in parts of rural Alaska—and a recent arrest is shining a light on the odd law. In an effort to curb the alcohol-abuse epidemic, a 2007 state law not only allows communities to ban booze but also the ingredients needed to make it. More than 30 communities signed on to the "local option" premise, deeming it a misdemeanor to stock sizable quantities of sugar and yeast with the intention of making "homebrew," the Anchorage Daily News reports.

Basically. He's cussing and carrying on and working himself up into a lather.

I have a feeling the cops are going to get called.

I feel that he should not be using language like this in front of the kids in the pool, but I am also sick of management's weird behavior. OTOH, this isn't the manager's fault. She doesn't own the place, or set any policy.

You're right, it won't go anywhere in the Senate. Problem is that the more sane alternatives may not go anywhere in the House, which is now filled with people more interested in making a point through protest than actually governing or preventing further economic collapse.

Unless they've been very adroit at depression-proofing their wealth, the fatcats are probably at odd with their 23% fools. They created them, let them try to leash them.

The "fatcats" are usually pro-Wall St. and heavily invested in stocks and bonds...the last thing they want is something that shakes the markets. Which is why I just can't see GOP, Inc. letting the Aug. 2 deadline come and go. I guess this will be a real test of how much muscle the TP really has right now.

They're already leashed.

The real tragedy is that the 23% will happily vote for anything that maintains their state of upwards wealth transfer, because their media cult teaches them that that is good, and right, and how things should be. More importantly, liberals hate it, and what's really important to them is that they do things liberals hate.

It's the view of someone with no knowledge of American political history or the current two party dynamic. Sure, the Dems and independents would unite against a GOP president, and then elect another centrist Dem, just like Obama or Clinton. The pure progressive dream is unrealistic in a society as huge and diverse as our own. Works nicely in Sweden, though.

Ron Paul!

Ron Paul has two proposals for the new Congress:
1) Refuse to raise the debt limit! Find a way, month by month, for Congress to spend only what the Treasury raises in revenue.
2) Start over from scratch with the 13 appropriations bills that fund the federal government. Reject any talk of baseline budgets or discretionary spending. It is all discretionary!

Paying your bills is discretionary!

OT: This read will take you just a tad longer than Obama vetoing cut and cap bills...
So I found out tonight that the Ladies of the Moose are setting me up with somebody...My buddy told me they have already picked her out...Age, Looks, interests.. The word was a perfect Match..
I told him..You have got to be kidding me?
Nope...
I am so F*cked..
Yup
What am I going to do?
Dunno dude
So I walk out of the bathroom and notice I'm being noticed...I walk past tables of smiling ladies saying hello...
Now I know what is up with these sweet ladies..
Their purpose is to fix me up with a girlfriend...
It's pretty funny...I don't like being fixed up.. Now I know when I meet this lady that there is great expectations.. I'll notice the eyes on the dance floor.. I'll feel awkward
So whose Sister are you?
And at the bar there will be a bunch of husbands telling you how great she is..
I want to ask:
Do you guys get paid in sex to do this?
It really is pretty fun.. I never thought I'd have this much fun living in a college town.. There should be a law or something..

Good point, it's the most interesting question in party politics right now. Maybe the GOP needs to hit tea party rock bottom before they can rise from the ashes, like the proverbial phoenix, and once again be a responsible party concerned with actual governing.

I doubt it. The TP will blame the non TP members who have already shown themselves incapable of internal critique. On the other hand the TPers have invented the RINO word and use it freely.

It will be an internal bloodbath and the winners will be the ignorant.

The only question is how the Democrats will fare in 2012, and if they win how they will deal with insanity on the other side of the floor. (and to think I once though Dean and Deanics were approaching insanity once. Little did I know what would come.)

The GOP is dead.
