Andrew Breitbart Spreads ‘Climategate’ Hysteria on Twitter

The right’s designated attack clown spreads climate change denial
Wingnuts • Views: 28,169

I just want to make sure Andrew Breitbart’s endorsement of the utterly bogus “Climategate” nontroversy doesn’t go unnoticed:

This could serve as a case study of how the right wing continues to spread anti-science memes that are demonstrably false, no matter how much evidence to the contrary exists — because in the real world, there have been no less than five independent investigations into the emails stolen from the climate scientists at the University of East Anglia, and every single one of them has completely absolved the scientists of any wrongdoing.

Consider that there have now been five, count ‘em five, inquiries into the matter. Penn State established an independent inquiry into the accusations against scientist Michael Mann and found “no credible evidence” [PDF] of improper research conduct. A British government investigation run by the House of Commons’ Science and Technology Committee found that while the CRU scientists could have been more transparent and responsive to freedom-of-information requests, there was no evidence of scientific misconduct. The U.K.’s Royal Society (its equivalent of the National Academies) ran an investigation that found “no evidence of any deliberate scientific malpractice.” The University of East Anglia appointed respected civil servant Sir Muir Russell to run an exhaustive, six-month independent inquiry; he concluded that “the honesty and rigour of CRU as scientists are not in doubt … We have not found any evidence of behaviour that might undermine the conclusions of the IPCC assessments.”

All those results are suggestive, but let’s face it, they’re mostly … British. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) wanted an American investigation of all the American scientists involved in these purported dirty deeds. So he asked the Department of Commerce’s inspector general to get to the bottom of it. On Feb. 18, the results of that investigation were released. “In our review of the CRU emails,” the IG’s office said in its letter to Inhofe [PDF], “we did not find any evidence that NOAA inappropriately manipulated data … or failed to adhere to appropriate peer review procedures.” (Oddly, you’ll find no mention of this central result in Inhofe’s tortured public response.)

Whatever legitimate issues there may be about the responsiveness or transparency of this particular group of scientists, there was nothing in this controversy — nothing — that cast even the slightest doubt on the basic findings of climate science.

But here’s right wing attack dog Breitbart, still spreading the meme even though he almost certainly knows it’s a lie, because it distracts the right wing base from the real issues. There’s going to be hell to pay when the children of these climate deniers have to deal with the consequences of their parents’ deliberate inaction.

One:

The Science and Technology Select Committee inquiry reported on 31 March 2010 that it had found that "the scientific reputation of Professor Jones and CRU remains intact". The emails and claims raised in the controversy did not challenge the scientific consensus that "global warming is happening and that it is induced by human activity". The MPs had seen no evidence to support claims that Jones had tampered with data or interfered with the peer-review process.[Link: seattletimes.nwsource.com...]

Reposting another one from today:

The sound of voices crying in the wilderness:

GOP Climate Hawks Caught On Video

They are a species trying to bolster their waning numbers: GOP climate hawks. Recently I'd heard there would be a gathering of these elusive creatures—Republicans who believe that climate change is real, and a serious threat. So I grabbed my camera to document their behavior in the field. They may be in the political wilderness these days, but they are making their call heard ahead of the all-important New Hampshire primary.

8 Gus  Thu, Jan 5, 2012 6:38:42pm

The kicker here is how Andrew addresses this to Charles. He acts as though Charles is the only one in the world that accepts climate change science. I noticed this on several occasions. How he singles out Charles. The same thing is true with Spencer and Geller who act as though he's the only one that is offended by their own natures when in fact I am certain that the majority of good Americans would consider them scoundrels. But that's Breitbart's typical target which I assume is from the Alinsky playbook.

Speaking of using intimidation:
Climate scientist receives death threats

An Australian born scientist at the centre of the East Anglia University email affair says he has received a number of death threats.

Dr Tom Wigley, a former director of the university's Climatic Research Unit, has had several of his emails hacked and used by climate change sceptics to suggest that he and his colleagues have been distorting data about the evidence of global warming.

He is unable to reveal the details of the threats, as they are now being investigated by the FBI and UK police.

A question the Santorums might be asked is if they still disagree with the medical staff's refusal to administer drugs to stop the labor. I'm curious how the legal landscape would be altered in Santorum's ideal legal system. Might the doctors face charges for refusing to prioritize the needs of the fetus in deference to their Hippocratic oath to do no harm to Mrs. Santorum, and in defiance of her request to favor the fetus and do that harm?

Archaeologists investigating a mass burial of 97 infants at a Roman villa in the Thames Valley believe it may have been a brothel.

More than 300 boxes full of artefacts, pottery and bones were recently re-discovered at Buckinghamshire County Museum along with Cocks' original report published in 1921, and a small photo archive.
The records give precise locations for the infant bodies, which were hidden under walls or buried under courtyards close to each other.

Cocks' original report paid little attention to these remains, which are now being tested for the first time by English Heritage

No there isn't.

I'm sorry Charles, but that's the really depressing part of this whole thing. There won't be any hell to pay. Internal consistency and/or any sense of shame pales in comparison to most people's desire to rationalize the belief that they are, and always have been, right about any given issue.

In the face of overwhelmingly contrary evidence, even if they have to reverse a previously held position, they'll simply spin and parry and rationalize away their previous belief as the correct position to have held at the time, and invent other reasons why they were right anyway.

Admitting you were wrong is too hard for most people to do, both to the ones who made the wrong call, and to the ones who supported the ones who made the wrong call. And the more dire the consequences, the stronger the need to rationalize away the cognitive dissonance.

Neat science news of the day:

World’s First Primate Chimeric Offspring Produced: Research Demonstrates Not All Embryonic Stem Cells Are Equal

Newly published research by scientists at Oregon Health & Science University provides significant new information about how early embryonic stem cells develop and take part in formation of the primate species. The research, which took place at OHSU's Oregon National Primate Research Center, has also resulted in the first successful birth of chimeric monkeys -- monkeys developed from stem cells taken from two separate embryos.

[...]

The research was conducted to gain a better understanding of the differences between natural stem cells residing in early embryos and their cultured counterparts called embryonic stem cells. This study also determined that stem cell functions and abilities are different between primates and rodents. [...]

OHSU showed this to be the case by successfully producing the world's first primate chimeric offspring, three baby rhesus macaques named Roku, Hex and Chimero.

"This is an important development -- not because anyone would develop human chimeras [sure, sure...] -- but because it points out a key distinction between species and between different kind of stem cells that will impact our understanding of stem cells and their future potential in regenerative medicine," explained Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., an associate scientist in the Division of Reproductive and Developmental Sciences at ONPRC.

Someday there will be chimeric humans. Yes.

re: #21 ProLifeLiberal

I'm noticing the story about Obama reforming the military, focusing against China.

There is an ancillary to this. Pakistan and China extremely close. It looks like this means we are finally chucking Pakistan under the bus.

It only took 10 more years than it should have, and the lives of thousands of Indians, Afghanis, and NATO troops to do it.

Dude, the US backed or ignored fundies and dictators in Pakistan for forty years, so long as they provided us with air bases and a counterweight to socialist-touched India. The entire history of the country is alternation between kleptocrats and extremists. If you want more details, ask my raped, beaten, and dead relatives.

If you imagine that this is all some new "stab in the back" thing that happened since 2001, and that the US can get all huffy about what's been going down, you have no idea what you're talking about. The Pakistani government has since Partition consistently walked a tightrope between appeasing hyper-conservative Muslims and keeping up appearances for the US...largely to the detriment of its body politic...and we ignored it because it was more important to keep an eye on the USSR and China. Pretty much the only thing going for Pakistan was that deep, deep crazies were largely exiled to Afghanistan.

Leaving for Iraq while imagining that Pakistan's self-serving, clannish, and rapacious governance--up to and including the faction-riven military--were going to shore up their differences and intrigue was magical thinking, contradictory of a basic assessment of the stability and accountability of the regional and central governance. The only more pathetic assessment possible would be to imagine that there's any correspondence between the acts of those with power and the citizenry.

Pakistan will get worse, and its government will participate, or at least stand by and let it happen...because, hey, who gives a shit about regular Pakistanis?

Gday Freetoken, we had some science news out if Stralia today:

Rare Moon mineral found in Australia
A mineral brought back to Earth by the first men on the Moon and long thought to be unique to the lunar surface has been found in Australian rocks more than 1 billion years old.

Named after Apollo 11's 1969 landing site at the Sea of Tranquility, tranquillityite was one of three minerals first discovered in rocks from the Moon and the only one not to be found, in subsequent years, on Earth.

Australian scientist Birger Rasmussen said tranquillityite had "long been considered as the Moon's own mineral" until geologists discovered it, by chance, in rock from resources-rich Western Australia.

"In over 40 years it hadn't been found in any terrestrial samples," said Dr Rasmussen from Curtin University.

When the Moon samples first came back, Dr Rasmussen said they were considered to be "extremely precious" and had been subjected to intense, detailed study when, ironically, their contents were "right here all the time".

Iran and Venezuela are feverishly building ICBM bases on the Paraguana Peninsula, a thumbnail shaped spit of arid land around a thousand square miles in size, 250 miles northwest of Caracas. These bases are designed to house missiles with nuclear tipped warheads capable of reaching large portions of the United States. From the Jerusalem Post, in May of 2011, and noted at the time by American Thinker, we read about these stunning developments that the Obama Administration and their socialist enablers in the media want to bury before the 2012 election.

I think they're operating less in dietary terms (unless they're actually stating that), than in terms of sensory qualities of food, specifically going back to early food thinkers like Brillat-Savarin (meaning technically they're stuck in the 18th century). People often feel a meal is incomplete without a starch component for their palate...it's part of their sense of the completeness of the meal.

There's actually an ongoing research quest to understand how we "perceive" food, and it's getting more and more nuanced as it goes along. One of those components in how we recognize and appreciate "starchiness" even though it's not a primary taste encoded on the tongue (yet...), nor does it have volatile components that activate the apparatus of the nose. The going theory is that we "taste" starch via tactile recognition of texture plus perception of enzymatic release.

Admission: I love food. I love sensory neurology. Put the two together and I just nerd out.

I think you're right - they're going for the eating experience, usually.

For many Americans' palates I think it simply comes down to bulk. One can take up a lot of space on a plate or in a stomach by adding water to ground up grass seeds or potatoes.

However, I have watched as some of the less experienced chefs/cooks actually add "starch" as if it is somehow important. The flip side is when asked to do vegetarian some of them totally blow it with a real misunderstanding - such as calling eggplant a "protein" (which is silly because the eggplant fruit like most fruits is mostly water and sugars and complex carbohydrates.)

But they're treating it like meat, so in their minds, it becomes the 'protein' component.

Weird, yes. I'd like to see more serious vegetarian food being done on the foodie shows.

In watching the various food porn competition shows I see that many, many chefs/competitors are still stuck on the idea of "starch", as in an entree needs a "starch element."

How ridiculous. There is no biological requirement for "starch", and frankly what some of these chefs call a "starch" are composed of molecules most of which are not the complex carbohydrate known as starch.

Stuck in the 19th and early 20th century, they are.

On old East German menus they would you offer a Sättigungsbeilage, a "filling side dish".

The ex-BF was finally sentenced this week:
Man Is Sentenced for Raping Ex-Girlfriend and Then Framing Her
[Link: cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com...]

The judge wasn't impressed by the police/prosecutors handling of the case:

The Queens district attorney’s office and the Nassau County district attorney’s office had insisted on Ms. Sumasar’s guilt up until she was freed just weeks before her own robbery trial was set to begin. Ms. Sumasar filed a civil suit in December against the New York City Police Department and the Nassau County Police Department for negligence leading to her wrongful imprisonment..

Justice Buchter railed against the Nassau County police, who had wrongly imprisoned Ms. Sumasar, saying that it did not take “a Sherlock Holmes” to deduce that a 5-foot-2 former Wall Street analyst with no criminal record would not have held people up at gunpoint.

He chastised the police for their egregious handling of the case, saying detectives had “turned a blind eye” to Ms. Sumasar’s protestations that she was innocent and had too easily been taken in by Mr. Ramrattan.

“The police were duped by liars by whom they had a right to be suspicious, and as a result a rape victim was framed by her rapist,” the judge said. “She was victimized by the rapist and then again by the criminal justice system.”

The left-wingers in Europe are the only ones working for rights for the Roma, but even there they're very tepid. The Roma get special-pled to hear and back. And all the things are true: Roma do have a higher rate of violent crime, of illiteracy, of non-payment of taxes, etc. This is because of hundreds of years of mistreatment and disenfranchisement. It's like locking someone in an attic and then complaining, when you finally let them out, that they're badly socialized, mad at you for some reason, and never do anything to help around the house.

The right-wing assholes I'm talking about beating them up are Le Pen types. Unfortunately, Le Pen got 25% of the vote in France.

The ironic part of the problem is that those on the 'left' who are the only people who really want to support the Roma are also turned off by actual Roma society. Since they were largely left out of the whole enlightenment thing, Roma culture is frozen: superstitious, misogynistic, etc. So that may be one reason why the help is always so scattershot and the approaches are often totally misguided.

The Miami Marlins really wanted left-handed pitcher Mark Buehrle.

But a member of his family isn’t welcome in Miami-Dade County.

Eighteen-month-old Slater Buehrle is an American Staffordshire Terrier — a type of pit bull — and keeping one is illegal in Miami-Dade.

So Mark Buehrle, who signed a four-year, $58 million contract in December, is settling his family elsewhere.

Dedicated animal advocates, Mark and Jamie also have three Vizslas: Diesel, Drake and Duke, and human children Braden, 4, and Brooklyn, 2.

Miami-Dade’s pit bull ban, enacted in 1989, declared American Staffordshires, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and American Pit Bull Terriers dangerous and outlawed them, along with mixes that display certain of the breeds’ characteristics.

They can own property, and they do. They don't refuse to assimilate, there have been no honest attempts to actually help them. The second-class attitude towards women is one shared by millions of people in the US. The ill-education is because schools used to be used as a tool for literally stealing their children.

I hate to sound crass, but what do you think should be done?

It'll be slow. It'll take trust. The first thing is to stop all the specific laws that are used to target the Roma. Special taxes, special fees, special punishments that affect only Roma. The second thing is to prosecute the fuck out of those who persecute them. Show the Roma the state will actually protect them. The third thing is identifying the Roma leaders who have the standing in the Roma community to actually work as bridges between the Roma and the outside.

It's a very imperfect comparison, but a little bit similar. The Haredi largely voluntarily segregated themselves. The Roma do not. Even the most Roma-centric Roma want to able to socialize in the larger group. They want to be able to go out and eat at restaurants and go to clubs and stuff like that.

Whether Roma voluntarily separate themselves from the majority culture when they are not persecuted is a question that has never been answered. Roma in the US are probably the least persecuted, but we have very little data on them-- partially because so many US Roma assimilate, which should probably tell us something.

Realistically, nothing will happen. As flynavy pointed out, they have no political power. Our system doesn't reward moral right, it rewards political power, and there is no real way for Roma to get it. They are poverty-stricken, ill-educated, despised by the majority. They are marginally employed, not a hugely exploited underclass as blacks were/are in the US, so they're not that 'useful' to the states that have them.

They have no pull, and so they will go on being shat on and persecuted, because we have largely failed to live up to the ideals of the Enlightenment.

Eligible for the free repairs, announced Thursday, are 8,000 Volts on U.S. roads and another 4,400 still for sale. The cars are covered by a "customer satisfaction program" run by GM, which is similar to a safety recall but allows the carmaker to avoid the bad publicity and federal monitoring that come with a recall.

Christopher Kubiak faced life in prison if convicted of last year's bloody, execution-style slaying of a martial arts instructor in the driveway of his Tarpon Springs home.

Kubiak, authorities said, had confessed to pumping 18 slugs from an automatic rifle into Joseph Brignoli on Super Bowl Sunday 2011.

But on Thursday, attorneys announced an unusual plea deal that reduced the first-degree murder charge against Kubiak to manslaughter and gave him a 12-year prison sentence instead of life. He will get credit for the 11 months he has already spent in the Pinellas County Jail.

You know, it's kinda funny to watch the shift in the political spectrum. 6 years ago, when I joined up, LGF was considered uber-conservative and we were painted with brushes like "Zionist" and "fascist" by the extreme leftist moonbats. Now, we're branded as "Communists" and "Muslim-lovers" by our former right-wing "friends" (who turned out not to be friends at all, but deranged lunatics waiting for their chance to shine). And yet, nothing has really changed here at LGF; Charles has changed his mind on a few issues, but it's largely been the same old steady diet of political moderation and an emphasis on defeating idiotic talking points.

re: #242 Cannadian Club Akbar

GM is calling it anything but a recall, but fact is that it is a recall of every Volt produced to date. I wouldn't call it a POS, but it isn't living up to their wild expectations. They hoped to sell 10-12k cars in 2011, but fell about 2,500 cars short.

The Nissan Leaf, which began sales after the Volt, actually outsold the Volt but again fell short of the Nissan projections of 10k cars sold in 2011 by a few hundred.

The Volt recall issues do dent its reputation, and it looks like some of the users are taking GM up on offers to buy back the Volts that were already sold.

1G new car tech doesn't always get the kinks worked out. Fisker had to recall all of their cars for electronics-related problems as well.

GM has to be doing it better and more effectively than its competitors since it needs to win back those potential customers who went elsewhere as the cars declined in quality and performance. GM has a chance to win back those customers - particularly as Honda, Toyota, and Nissan have production issues related to the Japan quake/tsunami and Toyota has quality control problems of its own. Honda has missteps with the Civic and ordered a mid-cycle redesign (which is unheard of) because of issues with the new model. Into the breach, Hyundai and Kia have made serious advances on quality and sales have jumped.

Ford continues to do well, although some of their products have quality issues as well.

For the US automakers, resolving the UAW contracts has given them a new lease on life, and so far, GM and Ford have capitalized on it, while Chrysler has done so to a lesser extent (Fiat still has to engage in a wider rollout of their Fiat products into US markets).

Sales have regained some of the ground lost after the bottom fell out of the market, but the bottom line is profits per vehicle, and if the carmakers are using higher incentives to woo drivers, then there's still work to be done.

For GM, that means if they have to rely on higher and higher incentives to move the Volts, they're going to run into trouble (recall that Toyota has not had to run incentives for the Prius - and the Prius has generally sold at or above the MSRP due to demand, as the model line has pushed 1 million sold worldwide). It's not a good sign if GM has to push incentives on the Volt to get it out the door.

Some of it is concern trolling from the right wing. A lot is from the Alex Jones branch of the internut libertarians. Then you have those on the left that refuse to read Obama's signing statement. A somewhat complex issue that people refuse to take the time to understand. Some want to believe whatever it is they want to believe regardless of the facts. Victim envy also plays into this.

re: #272 Cannadian Club Akbar

Toyota recalled hundreds of thousands of cars for numerous model years over faulty floor mats and their potential to cause unanticipated acceleration and then a separate issue with their accelerator pedals - does that make Toyotas a POS? I don't think so.

What happened here is that the IIHS and NHSTA testing revealed a problem with side impacts and the battery protection systems - fires occurring days and weeks after the impacts; GM has fixed the problem with a reinforcement of key locations. That should fix the problem.

If the cars died along the side of the road en masse and were constantly breaking down, I'd call that a POS. This is an unanticipated design defect revealed in testing (and apparently no fires in the real world have occurred thus far thankfully for GM).

Yeah, but you'd never catch US Navy personnel standing on deck if there was a chance of live fire.

I'm guessing smaller merchant vessels get stopped by these patrol boats. The US Navy isn't going to be concerned about this boat. One 16" round and it's gone.

We don't have 16" guns anymore. Still, a 5" deck gun would definitely put a dent in their plans.

It's the rectangular shape that runs closest to the ship in the background (above the 471 and just past the crane's vertical assembly). In the photo, the ammo box is oblong and you can sort of see a reflection along the leading edge closest to the camera.

The US no longer has the battleships in active service - largest deck guns are 5 inchers on cruisers and destroyers. The rest of the surface fleet has a variety of missiles to deal with threats, or smaller machine guns (50 cal, 7.62 mm, etc.).

In some ways, I miss the 16" broadside; looking at the images of Iowa's live-fire exercises, the concussive force of firing those cannons just looks badass. But then, a 5" gun firing a projectile at Mach 5 over 100 miles is pretty badass, too.

Huntsman Objects to Paul Ad Featuring Adopted Kids

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman says Rep. Ron Paul's campaign is out of line with a web ad that uses images of Huntsman's adopted daughters to argue that he doesn't hold American values.

The ad includes video footage of Huntsman, the former ambassador to China, speaking Chinese to his now-12-year-old daughter Gracie as an infant. In Concord Friday, Huntsman called the ad "stupid" and said he objects to suggesting that there is something sinister in his decision to adopt Gracie, and later another daughter from India.

I know at least two people who both have jobs, and food stamps. See, they need the food stamps, because paid above minimum wage, they make nowhere near enough money to survive on. And I said jobs because they work at two jobs each, 30 hours at each, so that those employers can dodge the benefits that go with being a full-time employer. And yet on average one place is always closing, they're never getting full hours. So they basically, by having two jobs they may get called into, manage a full 40 hour week. Just more exhausting.

They hate the indignity of food stamps, but they're grateful for it, because it takes away a little of the gut-wrenching fiscal decisions that they have to make every month about which bill to pay, what plans to cancel.

Adverse possession is one of the first topics discussed in the 1st year of law school property classes. It's anything but new. It's a concept that goes back centuries, but these scam artists are exploiting some unfortunate folks and the local governments aren't even bothering to check the situation.

[Link: recenter.tamu.edu...]
[Link: law.justia.com...]

This is a criminal matter, not merely a civil dispute as the local law enforcement contends. The squatter is a trespasser despite filing papers on which he has no grounds. He can say that he's got legal rights all he wants but the law doesn't seem to support that position.

If the former owner was current on obligations (mortgages, taxes, etc.) their absence from the home for any period of time is meaningless (and their possessions on the property that were subsequently put in a dumpster by the trespasser shows that they were intent upon staying in residence).

Just because someone races to a local authority and files a paper saying that they have a deed or title doesn't mean that they've got a legal title or deed. They are committing fraud and that's a criminal act as well. There's plenty of case law out there dealing with bogus deeds and titles that cloud title to property (and one of the reasons that mortgages are contingent upon title insurance and title searches).

There's a foreclosed house on my block. The bank hired a young couple to live in the house (or at least let them live there rent free) while the house was going through the legal process. A major reform (IMO) would be to remove the knife-edge eligibility.

If you make $400 per month in Georgia, you can get medicaid. If you make $401, you cannot. Food stamps, heating assistance, etc., etc., all have that sort of line. So what the whiners at the top said would happen if their marginal tax rate increased DOES happen at the bottom. Get a nickel raise, lose hundreds of dollars of benefits.

Now as it happens I think there's a major change due within the next couple of generations. We're seeing it now but it's not, quite, rocking our world. That's the fact that in pretty much every field overproduction is easy. If everyone worked 40 hours a week (that used to be 60 per week, six days a week) we'd be buried in goods and services. There are two basic solutions: everybody works less, or people get separated to the workers and the non-workers. For the latter this means either we support them (the dole) or we live with the constant threat of a large population that can only survive by breaking the law.

Woman tried to urinate on painting worth $30 million, police say

Admit it, you've probably walked through an art museum at some point and sneered, "Any 3-year-old could have done that."

But Denver police say Carmen Lucette Tisch took her apparent disdain for celebrated artist Clyfford Still's multimillion-dollar artwork one step beyond the snarky. Tisch is accused of trying to damage the abstract painting, above, by punching it and scratching it during a Dec. 29 visit to the new Clyfford Still Museum in Denver.

Witnesses said she also pulled down her pants and tried to urinate on the painting, although that isn't one of the charges she faces.

"It doesn't appear she urinated on the painting or that the urine damaged it, so she's not being charged with that," said Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the Denver district attorney's office, in an interview with the Denver Post.

Did we mention that the painting is estimated to be worth $30 million to $40 million?

Restaurant Sign Reads, 'No Politicians, No Exceptions'

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- It's common for presidential candidates to make the rounds at New Hampshire restaurants, but one has had enough of the visits.

The sign at the entrance of Colby's Breakfast & Lunch in Portsmouth reads "No Politicians, No Exceptions."

Employee Jessica Labrie told the Portsmouth Herald she made the sign after several customers complained that the visits were an interruption.

I appreciate the genius of gifted artists to the point of my limited understanding of the medium. Being the subjective thing it is, it's rather interesting how some artists achieve acclaim that is so elusive to others whose work looks lovely to me. One of the more entertaining documentaries about the art world is "Who the ^#$* is Jackson Pollack." Highly recommended. Funny as hell.

He says it seemed to be a matter of critical mass: anything up to a dozen GI's was fine, but more than that almost always led to some kind of trouble.

He finally just put up a sign (in English) saying "Private Club - Members Only" which kept most of the GI's at bay and did not turn any locals away.

(AP) They'll be playing arenas when they tour next month, but on Thursday night, a regrouped Van Halen provided thrills in a tiny club where a VIP crowd stood elbow to elbow as the storied band played some of their greatest hits including "Jump" and "Panama."

"Welcome to Occupy Van Halen, ladies and gentleman!" frontman David Lee Roth yelled just before the band launched into "You Really Got Me," the first in an approximately hour-long, high energy set.

The show was at the famed Cafe Wha? in New York's West Village, a club owned by Manny Roth, the uncle of Roth.

Activist Cindy Sheehan Brags About Tax Evasion to Occupy Crowd

Cindy Sheehan hasn’t paid her income taxes for the last 7-years. The activist, who famously camped out on George W. Bush’s ranch after her son was killed while serving in Iraq, spoke to several protesters during Occupy the Rose Parade on Monday.

Sheehan says that she hasn’t paid her income taxes 7-years because she refuses to fund the US Government as it commits “crimes against humanity.”

Sheehan said:

“This is a picture of my son. We should never forget the victims of the 1%, or the robber class… (When the government) decided to give $850 billion wall street I decided that I’m giving myself a bailout… I’m not paying the bill anymore. I haven’t paid my income tax since my son was killed. I refuse to be a funder for their crimes against humanity.”

I think Uncle Sam is going to disagree with that.

Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich GOP ticket?

As a progressive, a Ron Paul/Dennis Kucinich presidential ticket would stoke my fires. It might also attract Republicans who long for the party’s non-interventionist, fiscally conservative roots.

This week, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said U.S. Rep. Ron Paul’s (R-Texas) “views on foreign policy are more in line with liberal anti-war Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) than with the Republican Party.”

It was meant as a diss. But Santorum just may have won Paul more converts. Why not put the two peace-loving, civil-liberty-favoring, avant garde congressmen together on a ballot?

Merging polar opposite sides of the political spectrum could be one of the most politically pure, bipartisan ideological unions yet. Through that union, political dualities would ideologically balance each other out, appealing to divergent ends of the political spectrum.

If elected, Paul has said he would consider Kucinich for his cabinet.

Aside from High-tech Robin Hood hacker Anonymous making headline news Wednesday for its disrailing neo-Nazi websites and targeting brutal California police, the group issued a message calling President Barack Obama and co-authors of National Defence Authorization Act (NDAA) "terrorists." Anonymous demands that the president resign because he has no right or authority to implement a bill that violates the Constitution of the American people and the group vowed to remove the corrupt leaders from government and says, "We The People! A Navy helicopter from the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis, responding to a distress call from a merchant ship under attack by pirates, chased the pirates to their "mother ship," an Iranian-flagged dhow that had earlier been hijacked.

A heavily-armed counter-piracy team from the Navy destroyer USS Kidd met little resistance when they boarded the dhow where they found 15 armed pirates and the 13 Iranians who were being held hostage. The pirates were taken into custody. The Iranians were set free in their dhow.

Such a stupid insult. Some of the Judenrat were certainly assholes. But many were desperately trying to manage the terrible situation, desperately trying to play politics with the Nazis, completely outmatched in power but using whatever desperate strategy they could. Many used the use of Jews in defense work in order to plead for their continued free existence, they hoped that the German government could be negotiated with. Jews, in the past in Europe, had always faced times like this. There is no reason to blame the Judenrat for not envisioning how far the Nazis would go. Many of them were trying to help the greater community. Still others were active with the resistance.

They were all of them Jews under the threat of the Nazis, and none of us know what it was like to face the evil they faced, or make the decisions they made.

This is part of Geller's screed against Jon Stewart:

This is not the first time that The Daily Show made fun of, ridiculed, and smeared proud Americans and passionate zionists. What's he doing? And why? Does he know how much CAIR raised for their home office, Hamas, whose stated goal is to destroy the Jewish homeland, through the Holy Land Foundation?

Stewart missed his calling. He would have been first on line to turn over his fellow Jews in Poland and Germany. Smug self-loathing Jew.

The whole premise of the video is a lie. Hamze wasn't rejected from joining the Republican party. Hamze wanted to become a member of the Broward County GOP Executive Committee. That is vastly different.

Hamas-tied CAIR wants onto the Republican Executive committee. Of course they would be rejected. The hatchet job done on Joe kaufman, a great American and tireless fighter for freedom, is disgusting. I have known Joe for many years, and he is peerless. He is running against that train-wreck, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Perhaps that is why Stewart went after him. Self-hating Jews protecting their flank.

Why didn't Jon Stewart's smart ass dhimmi reporter ask Hamze whom he meant when he railed against "neo-cons and neo-Zionists"? Why didn't they ask Hamze about Hamas-linked CAIR's unindicted co-conspirator status, or the former CAIR officials who are doing time for jihad plots? Or about how he tried to strongarm Congressman Allen West into shunning freedom fighters? Or about when he played the victim game and lied about Islamic terror until West strongly rebuked him? Why didn't Hamze get asked about what he thought of the brutal and bloody sharia law? His deceptions exposed here...

You can find an indirect link here.

re: #469 Obdicut

Pam, however, is of a philosophy that you never compromise, never back down, never give an inch, and anyone who does is a coward, a collaborator, and a traitor. Of course, she holds these principles while fighting a battle against imaginary foes, or real foes she hates but can't actually do anything to who are a long ways away, while being protected by the United States of America, our armed forces and our rule of law. So Pam vs. the Jihadis is a lot like a kid versus a tiger on TV. Sure, the tiger would eat the kid if it could, but the kid's not as brave as he imagines for waving a pretend gun at it.

So her ability to understand the behavior of people faced with actual life and death situations for themselves, their loved ones, and everyone they know, is somewhat compromised.

It's the same bullshit they bring out around Soros.

Hey, look! Ron Paul finally took a stand on something:

Paul campaign disavows anti-Huntsman ad

No translator was needed to interpret Jon Huntsman's response to a pro-Ron Paul web ad that asks whether the former Utah Governor is a "Manchurian Candidate?"

"It's just stupid," Huntsman told a crowd of college students in Concord, New Hampshire Friday morning.

Following Huntsman's remarks Friday, the Paul campaign appeared to agree and called for the ad to be pulled. "The video is disgusting. Whoever put it up should remove it immediately," Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said.

The web ad from the group, New Hampshire Liberty 4 Ron Paul, takes aim at Huntsman's ambassadorship in China, his ability to speak Mandarin, and even his adopted daughter, Gracie Mei, who is Chinese. The spot closes with an image of Huntsman dressed as China's communist leader Mao Zedong.

I understand your distrust. I was pretty freaked out when they went nuts on the Park 51 thing, and had an uneasy feeling that Foxman had jumped the shark, but I actually think it benefitted the organization in the long run, as he met all of Geller's Gang up close, and has been very critical of them since. UPDATE 1-Latest Egypt vote brings Islamists closer to win

The Muslim Brotherhood won more than a third of the votes in the last stage of elections for Egypt's lower house of parliament, according to partial results on Friday, showing the Islamists are set to dominate the legislature.
....
The Brotherhood's party list won 37.5 percent of the vote in the third and final stage of voting. Repeating a pattern seen in previous rounds, the hardline Islamist Nour Party list came second in most of the districts after this week's vote, results on its party website showed.

The Islamists now look set to wield major influence over the shape of a new constitution to be drafted by a 100-strong body that the new legislature will pick, though the Brotherhood has promised that Egyptians of all persuasions will have a say.

There is a rift the size of Africa between the Salafists and the Brotherhood.

The TVTropes guys have been following this

News from Egypt: The Salafist "Noor Party" (20% of Parliament seats) is strongly advocating for enforcing a requirement that the Egyptian President be a Muslim, while the MB (30-40% of Parliament seats) more or less opposes such a measure on basis that "we shouldn't argue about matters that reality (i.e. the people's will) forces upon us".

If it helps, what I've got so far from googling both Al-Nour Party and the MB indicates that any potential alliance between the two alone is quite a distant possibility, and that it's much more likely that they would band together under a comprehensively multiparty coalition (including secular parties) instead.

I think it is likely that you will end up with the same thing that happened in both Tunisia and Morocco thus far: A Left-Islamist Coalition. How these will work, I have no damn clue.

I too was disappointed in the ADL handling of the mosque issue. But particularly with large organizations I tend to take a longer view of things and not write them off on the basis of one particular choice. The reality is that they did make the wrong choice there. They were not alone in that. There were a great many nuances to that issue, and they fucked up. They do seem to have a hard time with Islamophobia, and I hope that they are able to work through it. It is particularly complicated when they are trying to accommodate a very loud victims group and appear sensitive to it.
