Nate Silver’s Florida Projections: Gingrich 66%, Romney 32%
The latest Florida primary projections from Nate Silver are really bad news for Mitt Romney.

One thing to note is that Nate is not using the latest PPP poll (because, I suppose, the numbers aren't out officially yet), which according to the PPP twitter feed shows Newt with a much smaller lead.
2 | Targetpractice Sun, Jan 22, 2012 10:27:17pm |
Doubly bad news, as it also looks like Santorum might finish poorly enough to consider bowing out. And without him there on stage, it becomes a slugging match between Newt and Romney, one which he is simply not equipped to handle.

How negative can Romney really go against the bog monster? I mean, Newt's body is primarily made up of rotting vegetation and old railroad ties, it'll just absorb whatever dirt Romney's PACs throw at him and feast on it.
The Ging was damageable when there were other viable non-Romney's running, but now he's down to Santorum and Paul, one a disgusting joke and the other a demonic goblin that aims to steal the GOP's firstborn unless they can correctly guess his real name. With Romney finding it almost impossible to break through his 30% ceiling he may be well and truly fucked.
I hope this does drag on as long as possible though. Because next to facing Gingrich the best outcome is if Romney solidifies the nomination after a long hellish battle, only by winning delegates in states like California, Vermont & Washington which the GOP can't win in the general, and Virginia where Newt won't be on the ballot.
8 | dragonath Sun, Jan 22, 2012 11:09:07pm |
I don't think Romney's gonna have much luck trying to out-Newt ol' Gingrich himself. People can sense his desperation from miles away.

At this point, their only hope is that they can somehow keep Santorum viable into April, taking the edge off further Newt victories. If he does call it quits after Florida, then it's Newt and Romney. And like frank said, there's simply no way Romney can go mean enough and nasty enough to edge out Newt, even with his Super PACs doing the heavy lifting.

That seems pretty unlikely, but given what's happened so far this campaign season I wouldn't be all that surprised either if Mitt gets desperate enough to try a stunt like that. You just know some campaign consultant somewhere has a plan all drawn up to renounce all the un-evangelical differences between Mormonism and evangelical Christianity and state that he totally always believed in only the things that the two religions have in common the whole time (so they're basically the same after all so no big deal right everyone?)

As you can see Romney went to town on Newt Gingrich this evening in a newly aggressive stump speech taking Newt to task on pretty much all the signature Gingrich failings. But beyond the generally tough demeanor, there’s another meta-message: I can dog whistle and bloody Obama as well as Newt, or I know bitch-slap politics as well as the next guy. So don’t be worried that I won’t be ready for that epochal debate. Mitt’s new line is that we want someone in the White House who has “had a job” before. Unlike President Obama, who apparently has never had a job before?
“I think it’s time we had someone in the White House who knows how to create jobs because he’s had a job.”
So President Obama, the self-made man, has never had a job before, unlike Mitt Romney, the guy born into the highest realms of wealth and power. That’s where we’re going.

Romney also suggested that Obama has never had a job, but that's clearly not true.
Romney, Aug. 11: He just doesn't understand how the economy works, because he hasn't lived in the real economy. I think in order to create jobs, it's helpful to have had a job.
Normally, the criticism of Obama is that he has never managed a business — a point Romney made earlier this year when saying, "I like President Obama, but he doesn't have a clue how jobs are created." But in the Republican debate, Romney went too far in implying Obama hasn't had a job.
Obama's low-paid work as a community organizer with public housing residents in Chicago has been well-documented. The man who recruited Obama told U.S. News & World Report that he was hired at $10,000 a year, with another $2,000 allowance to get a car.
After graduating from law school, Obama taught at the University of Chicago Law School and worked as a lawyer for the Chicago firm Miner, Barnhill & Galland. And, of course, Obama spent several years in public service as a state senator before becoming a U.S. senator and then president, the "job" for which Romney is now applying.

Yeah, the first episode of Lost seemed really nifty. Then I got frustrated by the glacial pace and how it couldn't make up its mind whether it was sci-fi or not. Then it became deeply silly spiritual hoo-ha. They openly admit to just changing shit around during the first season. It's too bad, it seemed like it had a lot of promise.

Partially due to the year sign being popularly mentioned - and also put on the paper place mats in chinese restaurants! :)
That there is also the element cycle making it a sixty year repeating cycle is less known. Is it fair to say that people weren't sure exactly where the graves and remains were located though?
I agree that isn't the same thing as doubting the existence of the graves.
Oh, sure. It's the injection of "doubt" where there was none that pisses me off. It basically gives a cart blanche for prior denial ("So, there was doubt, we were right!"). The simple fact is that ~800,000 people entered the camp and never left, this is amply documented; the witnesses among the Nazis, survivors and bystanders all testified about extermination; the post-war investigation found lots of remains, including a thick layer of ashes between Treblinka I and Treblinka II. That the exact number of graves or their exact borders are not known is neither here, nor there.
Also, note that strictly speaking this is not a stake through denial's heart. As I pointed out, the same results were obtained in Belzec, Chelmno and Sobibor, which didn't sway the deniers. These finds won't sway them too, since by "graves found" it is not meant that 800,000 corpses were found - those were incinerated and ashes scattered. The pits were found, along with some remains. It's with the evidence enumerated above that this find is significant. Without this evidence we wouldn't know how many people died there or who they were.

The evidence doesn't fit their prejudiced view point and/or pet theories, therefore it doesn't exist (or has been forged and placed there.)
Unfortunately no great surprise there. Does make me wonder a little bit what evolutionary advantage there is to willful denial of this degree since homo sapiens appears to be at least partially hardwired to doing this sort of thing.

(I should note that I don't have any criticism Ms. Colls' work, it's both great and helpful. It's the sensationalistic and sometimes ignorant framing by journalists that I don't like. It's the same with every new fossil discovery, when you can expect the "missing link found at last!" headlines, no matter that the "missing link" concept is nonsensical, and such headlines basically refute all analogous headlines in the past.)

I have a new game I am trying to play, but part of it is hidden by the dock. I can't play because I can't see the whole board. Actually, I can't see the whole board at all. I can't see a way to make it full-screen either. I can't get to the bottom of the board to resize it.

As others have noted, he's playing the wrong side of the scandal game. Newt, by the way, is playing it the right way.
You've got negatives that are either on the cusp of release or just being exposed? Go open, and then go aggressive on those who want to wallow in them. "Hey, I did them. They're there. And they're PAST." The alternative turns into a steady drip... drip... drip that never lets people get past them.
Mitt went from refusing to saying he'd release the 2011 in April to saying he'll release 2010 and 2011 Tuesday... And people are going to say Newt and Clinton and his father all released at least a decade, where's his problem?

Gingrich is a Level Boss. He's almost impossible to bring down with magic, but if you get a couple of tanks in close, and have the healer top them off from time to time, he can be brought down. And he comes with all kinds of loot that he picked up at Tiffany's!

What in the living hell. Is he seriously saying that he gathered Lizards' personal information purely as an insurance policy against ever getting banished? What is it with people that they feel the need to be so boneheaded over a simple blog account?

As far as my online identity, I use the same handle for pretty much everything. I could guarantee you anyone here could do a 5-second search and find out who I am, where I live, and probably call me on my cell phone, if they wanted. I'm honestly not concerned about it because 1) I have nothing to hide, and 2) if someone did decide to track me down and stalk me, they'd get more than they bargained for.

It's kinda complicated, but what it boils down to is an entitlement mentality. They feel like they've somehow earned the right to post here, and Charles banning them is considered a personal affront that has to be redressed by going full-on psycho. Me, I've actually wandered away from LGF a few times during my membership - not out of dislike but out of forgetfulness. See, people who are reasonable about the whole thing rarely get banned in the first place, because they don't do anything that is worthy of getting the stick. So you get into this interesting pattern where the majority of banned lizards become stalkers, because they were of that mental bent to begin with.

THis is the most hilarious thing ever. From a Cracked Article about strange way animals are adapting to Humans.
Probably the only thing you know about parrots and cockatoos is that they can talk. Or, more specifically, that they can mimic human speech. Now, unless they're shockingly gifted, they don't understand a word they're saying. But a 4-year-old doesn't know what the word "poontang" means, either, and that doesn't stop him from repeating it and getting all of the other preschoolers saying it. We're finding out that birds kind of do the same thing.
After all, the pets that are raised among humans and learn (or learn to imitate) dozens of words sometimes either escape or are released into the wild. Now, because birds in the wild have no need for human language, you'd think they'd stop using it once they managed to get loose. But you would be wrong. They keep using what they learned and, more importantly, teach it to other birds.
That's why people around Sydney, Melbourne and other big cities in Australia have found wild cockatoos using English phrases. Now ask yourself: If you had a bird that repeated whatever you said, what's the first thing you'd do? You'd start teaching it some goddamned swear words, that's what. Well, they do that in Australia, too. So, sometimes the birds have been heard cursing at people.
Now imagine how crazy you'd think you were going if one day you were walking through the woods and you suddenly heard a disembodied bird voice tell you to eat a dick.
The weirdest part is, if the domesticated birds stay with a wild flock long enough, the words become part of the flock's calls. Scientists say that the way the birds learn their own chirps and calls is similar to how babies learn to speak, so these new calls (i.e., "Hey, asshole!") are just added to their repertoire. We're literally corrupting the birds' own language.

On an episode of "Life After People" they said that it would take several generations for human language to leave "talking birds"... because the sounds are meaningless.

Romney Must Renounce "Mormon Hostility to Christianity"
Mormonism has always been at odds with Christianity and openly denies the Trinity and the gospel of grace.
As a Bishop in the Mormon Church, Romney is free to believe its strange doctrines, practice their Masonic rituals, even wear their sacred underwear, but Romney's Mormon beliefs are not Christian.
Historically Mormons have hated and insulted Christians beginning with its founder, the polygamous Joseph Smith who said he wanted to be the Mohammed of the Americas.
Romney hopes Christians fall for the lie they believe the same things we do.

First of all, Joseph Smith was un-American. When a newspaper in Nauvoo criticized him, he ordered the Printing Press destroyed. He actively flouted the US Constitution.
Secondly, Joseph Smith was a man who had a history of fraud. Let's point out the fact that he was found guilty in New York of some crime involving a seer stone, not to mention the fact that the way the book was "translated" was a bit odd, though I will have to find it.

There’s No GOP Cavalry Coming — It’s Too Late To Get On The Ballot
As Newt Gingrich surges in the polls against Mitt Romney, despite the fact that many observers think he would be a disaster for the GOP’s prospects, some Republican pundits have re-lit the flame for a new candidate to jump in and save them from a Mitt vs. Newt contest. But there is a serious problem with these fantasies: It is now impossible to get on the ballot in many states.

Meh, that happened well before the 14th ammendmant was interpreted to incorporate 1st ammendmant rights. At the the time the 1st ammendmant only protected against federal attempts to restrict speech, and even then it was notably unsucessful. The federal government allowed southern postmasters to refuse to distribute abolitionist literature for example, leading to effective federal censorship in the south.
Joeseph Smith also wasn't much further out of line than several other religious or quasi-religious groups at the time. In the 1830s a man who had attempted to publish details of masonic rituals was arrested in New York, bailed out by the masons and then hanged. In boston leading members of protestant society organized a mob to burn down a convent and then prevented firefighters from approaching until the building had collapsed.
Smith wasn't nessesarily a nice person, but he ections were by no means worse than than the norm for that time period.

Wikipedia says the Nauvoo city council ordered the press destroyed. Could be seen as a property crime more than a violation of the first amendment.
But my point is, even Americans violate the Constitution. Doesn't always make them "unAmerican". If they say we should no longer operate under our Constitution, then it might. Dissent is very American. Actually, dissent is very human, and tolerated here more than a lot of places.

And again: That has fuck-all to do with Joseph Smith, and bringing up gay marriage while talking about being offended by a comparison between Smith and Mohammed is ridiculous.
They were both religious leaders. They're comparable in that manner. If someone is trying to compare them so as to insult one or the other, they're a shithead, but there's an obvious comparison as they both founded and led major religions.

Even the US Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution under terms that we'd now consider unconstitutional.
Besides those two infamous cases, there are plenty of instances that saw the Court's interpretation shift - overruling the earlier case (and ignoring stare decisis). In some of those instances, the time between the original case and the case that overruled the original case was as few as 3 years. Other instances put a 100 years or more between the original ruling and the case that overruled it (think Pennoyer v. Neff and the Shaffer v. Heitner).

Just wanted to talk about my genealogy discovery last night, because it was a profoundly moving bummer.
I finally found where one of my ancestors is from, I think. I need to find pre-1856 Catholic church records for the town, because that's when my ancestors left. It's made more complicated by the fact that the town was Germany then and is Poland now. In fact, after WWII, all ethnic Germans were expelled. After WWI, the town voted 34,000 to 1,000 to be in Germany. The town population is now 5,000.
Whoa. 35,000 to 5,000? The place has to be a ghost town, unless an enormous number of homes were destroyed.
But still--they evicted that many?
Then I went to the library catalog page for the town. Do you see what I see?

[Link: fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com...]
Two new automated polls suggest that the swing in momentum — plus whatever additional gains Mr. Gingrich made from the favorable news coverage following his South Carolina win — are enough to have given him the lead in Florida.
The first poll, from Rasmussen Reports, puts Mr. Gingrich ahead by 9 points, 41 to 32. The second poll, from Insider Advantage, pegs Mr. Gingrich’s lead at 8 points. Both polls conducted all their interviews on Sunday in the immediate aftermath of Mr. Gingrich’s South Carolina victory.
Polls from InsiderAdvantage have generally had more favorable results for Mr. Gingrich than those conducted by other polling firms, and the C.E.O. of the polling firm, Matt Towery, is a former campaign chairman to Mr. Gingrich.
Rasmussen Reports polls, however — although they have sometimes shown a Republican “lean” in general elections — have not been particularly friendly to Mr. Gingrich in recent weeks. Instead, the firm’s previous poll of Florida — conducted just 11 days ago — had given Mr. Romney a 22-point lead there.

One of the most important genealogy archives, which was put on disk at the beginning of internet genealogy and is now available for free, is the Freedman's Bank records.
It's a failed bank from the Reconstruction period that contains genealogy information--bank customers had to give their parents' names. Since there was only sporadic records kept for blacks before that period, it's considered one of the most important African-American records.

Limbaugh repeated the "deathbed" error recently. Both women are still alive. One was being treated for cancer around the time of the divorce, the other was diagnosed with MS before the divorce.
re: #189 The Yankee
Both sick, not near death though.
So Newt is in a Catch 22, the truth is barely better then the myth. Newt actually having to admit that his wives were not in fact dying when he left them just very sick. He made himself a nice shit sandwich.

And, ironically, Ann Romney has MS and has survived cancer.

By the way, Silver now has even stronger Newtmentum - up to 84%.

But he won't eat it. He's serving it up in Florida right now, and they can't get enough. They think it takes a shit sandwich to beat Obama.

Those are actually roasted purple fingerling potatoes. He failed to heed the advice about slicing them up first.

He's added the Rasmussen poll.

Sort of obvious:
Why Men Exhibit Warrior Tendencies:
Following a review of current academic literature by psychologists, biologists and anthropologists, the study concludes that men are biologically programmed to be warriors because of our deep ancestral history of inter-tribal war and conflict.
Meanwhile, females have evolved a response to threats from male outsiders where they ‘tend and befriend’ as a way of protecting their offspring, suggests the study.
In a paper published in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, researchers from Oxford, VU Amsterdam, and Michigan universities argue that although these responses may have evolved as a way of coping with threats posed by outsiders, they ‘might not be functional in modern times and are often counter-productive’.
The researchers suggest that the study may help us to understand the evolutionary and biological roots of the aggressive behaviour between ‘tribal’ factions in today’s world. The study points out that in modern cultures, this ‘evolved’ behaviour can be observed in large-scale conflicts between countries and nations as well as in relatively small-scale skirmishes, such as between supporters of rival football teams or street gangs.

How do you feel about google's street view. I still kind of feel what ever you can see from an public area is not private.
I have missed feeling about the rulings, cause they can still follow you by car or helicopter. But sticking a GPS on your car is just too easy.

Somebody hacked Chuck Grassley's Twitter.
How much trouble can you get in for that? Legally, I mean.
Apparently, this is in retaliation for SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA.

Mitt should put that in an Ad. Or maybe that kind of tastless deed would have to be done by a Super Pac.

I paged that decision earlier. In one of two concurring rulings, Alito, joined by Breyer, Ginsberg, and Souter, thought that the ruling should extend to other GPS enabled devices, including mobile phones.
The decision went as far as I think it could have under the facts of the case, and it probably would take a separate case to reach a similar conclusion (warrant required). That said, the concurrence is a signal to law enforcement and the courts below that warrants are required before they can attempt to use that GPS data on cellphones and other mobile devices.

I think there needs to be a distinction drawn between automated surveillance, automated mapping and actual police efforts. To me google maps isn't surveillance, it is a) public b) not updated and c) you can get your self removed from it if you object. It's essentially no different from a map as for as I'm concerned. Automated surveillance is the automatic, persistent gathering of data for whatever purpose. It's not targeted at an individual but encompasses everything before. Things like automated license plate readers, CCTV cameras on public streets and the growing ID requirements for any kind of travel fall into this category. I'm very ambivalent about all of this, but I'm not sure of the legal incorrectness of any of it. In the third category, actual police efforts, I like the precedent set by the supreme court in the early nineties. I don't remember the name of the case, but it involved the police using an infrared camera to look for pot growing operations indoors. The Justices ruled that any surveillance using technology not available to the public required a warrant, even if the surveillance took place in a public space.
