A Case Study in Breitbart Propaganda: Michelle Obama as ‘Angry Black Woman’

Pushing the “angry black woman” stereotype to the right wing base
Wingnuts • Views: 27,369

Here’s an interesting look at the race-baiting propaganda tactics of breitbart.com, a tip sent by LGF reader Dave, who tracked down the speech from which Breitbart blogger Ben Shapiro used one photo to illustrate his article on Michelle Obama. (The article that prompted an outpouring of rage and racist hatred for the First Lady in the comments.)

YouTube has video of the speech, which took place on February 11, the second anniversary of Ms Obama’s “Let’s Move” childhood obesity initiative. I set the video to begin shortly before the exact frame chosen by the Breitbart goons (7:15), to give you a clear picture of how deceptive their choice was — because Michelle is personable and likable in this speech, not at all “arrogant” or “angry.”

Youtube Video

This is what the First Lady was actually saying at the moment that “angry black woman” photo was taken:

So I want you all to think back. Think way back, especially the grown folks like me, think back to when many of us were kids, all those years ago.

Sounds pretty angry, doesn’t it? Nearly bursting with barely controlled fury.

And here’s the exact moment from the video, with the Breitbart version (taken from a different angle) inset at upper left:

They could have chosen this image instead (5:11):

But that wouldn’t have fit the stereotype breitbart.com pushes to its right wing readers to keep them full of rage, without reason or reality.

Thank heavens she didn't sneeze anywhere in this speech.

Surely Romney will stand up and declare, as Obama did, that family should be off-limits to political attacks.

Yep...any day now...

And since I'm off on the topic of atavists, here's another poorly written news article from bleeding edge of culture warfare:

Science teacher told to stop teaching about creationism

The Wake County school system has told a middle school science teacher to stop giving assignments about creationism as part of the study of the theory of evolution.

School officials say the assignment, in which the teacher gave his students the option of doing an extra-credit project on evolution or creationism, was inappropriate because the state curriculum doesn’t include creationism. The situation at Wakefield Middle School in North Raleigh highlights the challenge public schools face when discussing how life began.

“The courts have been pretty clear that public schools can’t teach about creationism in science classes,” said Ann Majestic, an attorney whose law firm represents more than 20 North Carolina school districts, including Wake County. “We have a standard course of study. There’s not a lot of freelancing that’s permissible.”

At Wakefield, eighth-grade science teacher Adam Dembrow gave students an extra-credit opportunity last month to do a poster and paper either on “your interpretation of a religions (sic) Creation” or on “any evidence on the theory of evolution, which can be used to support the theory of evolution.”

Dembrow suggested three websites that students could go to: Answers in Genesis, the Creation Research Society and the Institute for Creation Research.

Georgia Purdom, a research scientist and speaker with Answers in Genesis, said, “I think students should be allowed to learn about evolution but also to learn about the weaknesses of it.”

According to mainline scientific thought, life forms on Earth experienced changes for millions of years, as species adapted, or evolved, based on myriad factors. Cincinnati-based Answers in Genesis and its Creation Museum in Kentucky advance the view that the Bible’s account of God’s creation of the world in six days is the true one.

[...]

The assignment drew at least one parental complaint, causing the Wake County school system to investigate.

“We follow the standard curriculum, which focuses on evolution,” said Wakefield Middle Principal Jimmy Sposato in a written statement. “In this case, I talked with the teacher and reminded him to only give assignments aligned with the core curriculum moving forward.”

The school system said Dembrow did not receive any disciplinary action. Repeated efforts to reach Dembrow were unsuccessful.

Former state Rep. Russell Capps defended Dembrow’s right to give the assignment. In 1997, the North Raleigh Republican legislator introduced a bill calling for evolution to be taught as a theory and not as fact.

“Evolution is certainly something that students can be taught,” said Capps, who is running for a state House seat this year. “But it’s not the only theory. Students should also have the right to learn about creationism. Where’s their academic freedom?”

[...]

What is it about the concept that government is not supposed to endorse sectarian religious doctrines that news outlet writers and school principals can't grasp?

Truth is in the middle:

Of course there should be a wall of separation between the church and state. It's just we will draw the line where we want it.

Hiya Lizards! UPS just delivered a package to me from my new boss in Silly Cone Valley...A large basket of chocolates..Very exotic stuff like Dolcetto and 54% cocoa Lake Champlain and dipped raspberry sticks.
That is really cool...I don't really eat chocolate..
I'm thinking about regifting it to my GF. I'm terrible aren't I?
/

Yeah. Make sure she knows that you were sent it, but that you'd be happier seeing her eat the chocolate than eating it yourself.

You did get that line, right?

re: #70 freetoken

Most certainly. If you were a decent human being you'd send the basket to me.

You know what is funny..I can't regift it cause I know what's going to happen.. I'll just tell her the truth..otherwise...
First I'd need to destroy the nice card..Skip questions like..This is really cool..What web site did you order it from?
How did you know I liked double dipped peanuts?
and then it begins..
Would you order a basket like this for my little sister?
I prefer the..I hate this shit..You want it?

No, no, no.

"This is great stuff, but I'd be happier watching you be happy." You did think of her first, really. We're your witnesses.

The original photo that breitbart.com used is from Reuters:

The speed at which modern digital cameras take thousands of shots these days, and how much effort is expended sorting/tossing out photos that aren't representative or are off for various reasons in order to get the perfect shots,

The fact that wire services consistently publish these sorts of photos suggests intent --- that they're actually expending a decent amount of effort to winnow them out, as there's clearly a market for them (Fox Nation, Drudge, Brietbart, etc).

You know, pictures are pictures. They have a right to choose whatever images they want, and lets be honest, particularly with women on the right many publications have been shown to choose less than the most flattering images. What has been said about Michelle Obama and the absolute attempt to portray an image of her which stands juxtaposed to every fact we know about her is unforgiveable.
