Dig a bunch of holes and stick things in them... 10,000 years later the it's still findable. Once Stonehenge and Avebury gave archaeologists the clue what to look for, they found dozens of places that had wooden versions long since rotted away. And of course burial mounds... erosion doesn't erase them, and the skeletons and artifacts inside are remarkably well-preserved.

Then if you go inland, and find adobe stuff, or carved out of cliffsides -- that evidence lasts as long as any stone structure. Maybe longer, since dilapidated stone buildings tend to get their components repurposed into fences or paving.

Watched the tape of Obama at the dinner. Good for more than a few laughs, some well-pointed critiques couched in humor, and a display of something that I don't think Mitt Romney can emulate without a full upgrade, and even then.

The self-perpetual outrage cycle is simply boring when you get down to it. And we probably have at least four more years of it to sit through. The personality types don't surprise me though. I've met and/or worked with too many people whose goal in life appears to be to bitch about every single moment of it as if it is a personal affront.

A couple of years ago another author and I wrote a series of vampire novels set in late 18th Century Europe. The second was set mostly in Venice, at the time of Paolo Renier's death. He was the second last Doge of Venice.

It was interesting seeing things I've written about in moving pictures.

One thing not shown that I would have liked to see was the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, The House of the Shell of Snails. We used that as the lair? haven? of the central characters.

Unfortunately I had to leave the project. My co-author disliked something I posted on the internet and they decided they had the power to order me to never post anything again any where unless they cleared it first. They were a Republican. It was my first real intimation of how far gone the GOP and its followers had become.

That Twitiot I engaged yesterday never managed to do anything but spew the lamest of lame talking points. It got my attention with a bunch of random Godwins.

I note from the article that the aggressive DA in these cases is from neighboring St Lawrence County, not Franklin County where the part of the St Regis Reservation where the cigarettes are manufactored is.

No idea what the area looks like now. My family moved from up that way over 30 years ago. Back then it was a few towns with some industry (mainly along the St. Lawrence Seaway) surrounded by lots of small towns running family-level dairy operations (corn and cows). Fewer farms and a bit more tourism as you got over into the Andirondacks.

I am familiar with the area, went to college in Potsdam, and I have a camp in Wanakena. NY is slowly suffocating out the middle and lower class in these areas. A lot of Amish too. My in-laws grew up in Wanakena and Fine, they got out so they could get a job.

And for those with an interest with Jewish History in the US the town I lived in up in northern NY, Massena, has a distinctly ugly footnote in that regard.

There's also... ok, another one of my longwinded maybe-should-be-a-page comments.

I submit the thesis that the pill is one of the top ten, possibly top five, revolutionary inventions of humankind.

Revolutionary inventions change societies completely. This change takes generations before becoming 'the norm', and during the change engenders intense opposition. The opposition is due largely to fear: fear of the unknown, fear of the different, fear of the consequences. Add to this a mistrust of the invention as well; its failures are magnified, its successes diminished.

Preventing sex used to be wise. Sex => Children. Children, though loved, are a burden. Children having children breaks both, most of the time. So doing everything possible to prevent that problem was good.

The pill mooted the old defenses. But it isn't trusted, and the change it brings is feared for numerous reasons. That fear underlies a lot of the more staid Christian (and other religious) stances about sex, and it explains the vehemence of the opposition.

I think most here know I'm on the side of fairly free sex - get and use the protections, don't break promises, and make sure your partner is mentally competent and willing. But I understand the reasons for the objections.

'Even Worse Than It Looks': Extremism In Congress?

Congressional scholars Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein are no strangers to D.C. politics. The two of them have been in Washington for more than 40 years.

They came together in 2006 to write a book about dysfunction in Congress, called The Broken Branch. But their assessment of Congress today is even more dire — so dire, they've called their new book It's Even Worse Than It Looks.

Mann, a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution, and Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), join Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep to talk about the book, which comes out this week.

The book claims that democracy in America is being endangered by extreme politics. From the first day of the Obama administration, Ornstein says, our constitutional system hasn't been allowed to work.

"When we did get action, half the political process viewed it as illegitimate, tried to undermine its implementation, and moved to repeal it," Ornstein says.

Ornstein and Mann make no secret of who they blame for most of the dysfunction in Congress.

"One of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier – ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition," they write.

Solyndra Not Dealing With Toxic Waste At Milpitas Facility

MILPITAS (CBS 5) — Three months ago, CBS 5 caught Solyndra tossing millions of dollars worth of brand new glass tubes used to make solar panels. Now the bankrupt solar firm, once touted as a symbol of green technology, may be trying to abandon toxic waste.

It’s a tedious process. Slowly but surely, the shattered remains of brand new solar panel tubes head to a recycling plant in Hayward.

Meanwhile the next phase of the company’s liquidation is under way. It involves getting rid of all the heavy metals left inside the building that were used to make the panels.

The Fremont Fire Department’s Jay Swardenski oversees the cleanup. He said some materials, such as cadmium, are toxic, and hard to dispose of.

“They don’t degrade at all, so we want to make sure we don’t allow these materials to get into the environment,” he said.

It’s not just the leftover hazardous materials, but also the machinery used to apply them to the glass tubes. “Certainly those tools will need to be decontaminated, cleaned up, handled correctly as they are taken apart,” he said.

Fact is that Solendrya is winding down its operations and that money was a bet on the company.

It didn't pan out, but other DOE loans have thus far helped get companies going. Future loans will likewise do the same, though the number of companies and the amount of money at stake will be vastly limited because of the Solendrya fallout.

That shouldn't be the case - and it isn't a matter of picking winners and losers as the GOP has been claiming. It's about making funds available for startups so that they can have a chance to succeed to the point where there can be a ROE development of new technologies.

The GOP is flogging green energy as though it's the bogeyman, but it just shows their shortsightedness considering that there are alternative energy resources that could not only reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, but which can make the US more self sufficient for production of energy domestically - a real energy security plan.

The GOP's entire worldview is shortsighted. They're constantly pining for a mythical past that never existed, worshiping an inflated caricature of Reagan, and are still living in the Cold War, even though it's been over for decades.

They've got absolutely no concept of the future, so their social conservative wing keeps crippling students with useless drivel like Creationism and Intelligent Design and with trying to destroy the educational system from within. They reject science, math, reason, and the 20th Century. It's insane to see a political party thoroughly destroy itself, but they're managing to do it in spectacular style.

Although you may find this hard to believe, the fact that some government activity (usually initiated by Republicans for the purposes of lining their own pockets or pursuing some madcap theo-warfare scheme) is wasteful and corrupt does not mean that I don't think that having a democratically elected government that is capable of undertaking large scale projects is a good thing.

But then, that's a complex intellectual position that requires a degree of thought and reasoning.
