I also should point out that it isn't an issue of left or right, but rather an issue of control.

Science has no boundaries. The truth does not come from one race. The laws of nature do not vote or care one whit what humans wish they would be. They just are. Any science that has to apologize for what just is, must fail from the outset.

The Russians had there share of state accepted science.

The Church... Galileo, rhythm methods, evolution denial and an endless list.

The Nazis had "Aryan science" and an order to eliminate "Jewish science." The Russians wanted to eliminate "Jewish science" as well. Landau pointed out that without "Jewish science," the Russians would have no science. The Russians were a little smarter about that than the Germans - who arguably lost the war because many of the cutting edge people in radar, code breaking, proximity fuses and a host of other war toys - not to mention the atomic bomb, were Jews making "Jewish science."

And now the GOP...

They have GOP accepted science, which is any "science" that promotes their agenda.

In all of these cases, the measure of science is not truth, or data or independent lines of reasoning. There are no careful calculations. Often there are no calculations at all.

All there is are lies to push a social order based on control. Yet, they call it "science" to usurp the authority of carefully uncovered truths.

Ultimately, this is why the truth will always be the enemy of the totalitarian.

IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is a medical procedure used to help some infertile couples. A woman's ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs which are fertilised with her partner's sperm. This produces several fertilised embryos, some of which are placed in her womb, and the others are frozen for possible later use.

Two ethical problems then arise:

because several embryos are implanted to increase the chance of a successful pregnancy, multiple births can occur. Some couples choose selective reduction instead - the destruction of some of the embryos early in the pregnancy - either because they don't want so many children, or in order to improve the survival chances of the other embryos.
if the stored embryos are eventually removed from storage and disposed of, this could be regarded as abortion. Legislation such as the Texas Prenatal Protection Act makes such disposal an unlawful killing except under restricted circumstances.

Against the creationists' magickal idea of "person", I suggest that a much better definition has to do with brain function - which is why "brain death" is one criteria for unplugging someone totally dependent upon life support.

Without a functioning neocortex/cerebral cortex there can be no conscious thought, no collection of memories interacting with sensory input can exist.

The religious right cannot allow this biological definition of "person" because the magick would be gone.

It's interesting for those studying religion that not all theists insist on a "soul", but those believing such are clearly a minority in the US. In American religious culture, most Americans fully embrace mind-body dualism (yes, even reincarnationist Hindus), and some Christians even go one step farther into a tripartite human.

These type of beliefs most likely evolved with the rest of human culture as a way to accommodate the intense emotions surrounding death. Most people express these type of dualistic beliefs some time in their lives. This universality of the problem makes the sales job of the religious right much more easier than it would be otherwise (e.g., compare to the doctrines of tithing - most Americans don't really buy fully into those ideas.)

Since everyone past childhood have some awareness of their own impending death, the belief of "life after death" is one of the few comforts available to anyone regardless of social position or wealth. This belief gets translated back into the present as a claim to some sort of "soul" independent of the biological systems of the body.

This is also why people believe in ghosts.

Fighting this widely held belief system is difficult and returns little for the effort. Since so many people want to believe they are a non-physical being inhabiting a physical organism, the odds are strongly in favor of the religious right being able to continue to market their products in this country.

This problem will not go away when Akins goes away.

I would just remind him that he murdered his other children. The unused fertilized eggs that were sent to the incinerator. I would remind him that I don't think he is a murderer because I don't think a person is a person until they would have a good chance to breath on their own (as I think when you cease breathing on your own you cease to be a person, you become dead), but by his definition he is a murderer. Depending on how many eggs, a mass murderer.

Note: I understand that there are machines that can keep you breathing even if your body can't. But in my mind that wouldn't be life. YMMV

2) Lethal genetics that will surely kill a child young and will require intense pain, suffering, and crippling costs for all concerned. (NB: Families should have the *choice* of termination in this instance.)

I am in total agreement with the rest of the post. The question becomes when that occurs. Twenty weeks? Twenty one? Is it a moving target based on the youngest preemie of record to survive? It's a puzzlement.

RNC offers compromise to Maine's Ron Paul delegates

There has been a shake up for the Ron Paul delegates who are planning to represent Maine at next week's Republican National Convention.

State GOP chairman Charlie Webster told News 8 that the national contest committee has ruled that Maine's state convention was fraught with error.

The committee is recommending that Romney and Paul factions negotiate an agreement that would send ten delegates from each camp to the national convention.

Maine will have a total of 24 delegates in Tampa next week.

The remaining four are Webster, Gov. Paul LePage and the party national committeeman and committeewoman.

Disturbing Attack on Photographer Aired by Discovery Channel Reality Show

People do some pretty dumb things on reality TV shows, but perhaps none more asinine than this. During the filming of the Discovery Channel’s reality TV show The Devils Ride back in January, the camera crew captured footage of a confrontation between one of the show’s subjects and photographer Ashi Fachler, who was taking pictures from a public sidewalk. Here’s the description of the clip above (warning: it’s pretty disturbing):

When a photographer gets too close to a group of club wives and girlfriends enjoying a dinner out, Charles, a Laffing Devils prospect, steps in.

In case you didn’t catch that, Fachler was assaulted by a number of people involved in the show simply because he was getting too close while photographing from a public space.

Biker prospect was dumb lucky the photog had no defense training. So it goes to court.

What I've discovered so far is that the only way to fix this is to reboot the Mac. No other software demonstrates this problem, yet simply restarting Chrome won't work, and even reinstalling Chrome won't work. I have no idea why, but something Chrome does messes up fonts only for Chrome.

"Free" software ain't so free.

The idea that if any consciousness is in the energy that is not destroyed during death would not be the same as ME is difficult to comprehend. ME includes my consciousness, my body and that thing no one has yet defined in science --mind, soul, ka, whatever.

The idea that thousands of years of superstition has a better hold on that "whatever" than science does is really stupid, IMHO. My belief's about such things are private and don't involve anyone else's person or rights.

People seem to need to hang on to that idea that ME lives on after death. NO thanks, when I'm done, I'm done. The only pat of me that lives on is the part that became my child, the work that I have done and hopefully a few kind thoughts in the minds of others.

Why isn't that enough for people?

Have you had Chrome check for updates?

On my Xubuntu installation, Chromium (the open source version) slowly eats up the ram & if I don't restart it every 12 hours or so it will suddenly lock the machine up in a thrashing fit. This is with the Adobe Flash plugin installed. With the builtin flash plugin enabled, I'd only last about 4 hours.

The flip side is that, other than the memory issue, Chromium is faster, more stable & renders better (especially HTML5) than any other browser I've tried in Linux. Which reminds me, it's about time to restart the browser.

Why legislate conditions when we can never predict every possible circumstance? Nobody is in favor of a late term abortion, until it turns out to be the best choice for whatever reason. Leave that best choice up to the only human capable of that decision who is involved: the pregnant woman.

I don't know anyone that likes abortion at all. Contraception is a much, much better choice.

Wihtout comprehensive science based education and teenagers who will think before they act, we have to accept certain aspects of life. Like sex causes babies in the first place.
