RNC Official Says NM Governor Disrespected Custer by Meeting American Indians

Yes, a member of the Executive Committee of the Republican National Committee
Wingnuts • Views: 33,902

Read it all here.

Pat Rogers, a Republican National Committee (RNC) leader, is facing calls for his dismissal after telling the staff of Gov. Susana Martinez, R-N.M., that because she agreed to meet with American Indians, she disrespected the memory of Col. George Armstrong Custer.

Custer is infamous for being a U.S. Army commander in the mid-1800s who killed many American Indians during what are historically known as the Indian Wars. He was killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876.

Rogers is a GOP lobbyist and partner with the Modrall law firm of Albuquerque, New Mexico. A recent member of the RNC Executive Committee, he is also an RNC National Committeeman for his state. He is currently in Tampa, Florida preparing for the upcoming Republican National Convention.

[…]

‘The state is going to hell,’ Rogers wrote in part of the e-mail. ‘Col. [Allen] Weh would not have dishonored Col. Custer in this manner.’ Weh was a Republican candidate for governor of New Mexico in 2010 who ran against Martinez.

The e-mail was sent following a meeting in June between Martinez and the state’s tribes, according to ProgressNow. It was directed to senior members of the governor’s administration. The governor’s office has not responded to requests for comment.

‘George Armstrong Custer may be regarded as a kind of military hero by Pat Rogers, but to the Native peoples of America Custer represents the bellicose imperialism that was responsible for the systematic slaughter of American Indians throughout this continent,’ according to an e-mail being circulated by ProgressNow.

‘Such a blatantly racist statement against our Native people is offensive from anyone, but to come from a national GOP leader and lobbyist for some of our country’s largest corporations is indefensible,’ said Pat Davis, executive director of ProgressNow New Mexico, in a statement.

Mentioning the Trail of Tears is presumably disrespectful to the brave and honorable memory of Andrew Jackson.

I've figured it out. Pat Rogers is secretly a gamer and his favorite game is Custer's Revenge. That's the only explanation that makes any sense for derp of that magnitude.

I would hate to think of what Bishop Mitt's positions were during the Civil Rights Era.
The apple fell far from the tree and rolled down a hill when it comes to George and Mitt.

Yeah, I've read about the Mormon stuff in regards to race. Nasty, nasty stuff. Romney's own father actually stood up to a lot of it but seeing what I've seen from him the past few years, I think Mitt would have just gone with it. Much like how he went from vowing to be more progressive than Teddy Kennedy on LGBT rights to becoming very anti gay rights.

Back in February, Olympia Snowe said that politicians have to

understand that you have to have tolerance for all philosophical views. It's a big tent,

She pointed out that even President Ronald Reagan prescribed to that philosophy.

That's going to be important for us in supporting a presidential candidate if we want to win.

Visual approximation of the size of GOP's current tent.

The US Marines talked to some Navajos during ww2 - Codetalkers

Each Navajo recruit was paired with a guardian, whose primary standing order was to protect the asset. Not so well known, this meant killing the guy if he was ever about to be captured by the enemy.

They didn't teach that part in my schooling. Had to learn it from a movie. The asset was secrecy, not the men.

Mitt's a live-and-let-live kinda guy, but it's manifested itself in a very ugly way.

It's kinda weird; I'm not sure Mitt and I are so very far apart on a lot of social issues. He, too, doesn't really care what you do in your bedroom or whatever. The key difference is he doesn't really care about the importance of people not really caring (and therefore not having the chance to legislate their views on others).

New Mexico, along with Hawaii, California and Texas, is a minority-majority state, that is, a state where non-Hispanic whites represent less than half of the population.

According to the 2010 Census, 68.4% of the population was White (40.5% non-Hispanic white), 2.1% was Black or African American, 9.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.4% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 3.7% from two or more races. 46.3% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race).[38]

According to the United States Census Bureau, 1.5% of the population is Multiracial/Mixed-Race, a population larger than both the Asian and NHPI population groups.[36] In 2008 New Mexico had the highest percentage (45%) of Hispanics (of any race) of any state,[40] with 83% of these native-born and 17% foreign-born.[41] The majority of Hispanics in New Mexico claim a Spanish ancestry, especially in the northern part of the state. As has been repeated ad nauseam, if it was legal then that's something. But he's worked like the very devil to keep it hidden, and that means that he's taken actions that he's ashamed to stand behind.

LOL! If there is a bad decision to be made, my sister will make it. It really is amazing that she came from my parents. Proof that some people definitely are born that way.

*side note: She originally converted to LDS when she married her second husband. After he divorced her, she found this guy online and converted to Islam.

That's interesting that she converted from LDS. Father of a friend I grew up with apparently converted to Islam and started a second family in Morocco. As for meeting people online from overseas. Sometimes it works. My cousin met her husband online and they just celebrated five years and they're having kid number two this winter. Doesn't hurt that cousin in law works for David Gilmour of Pink Floyd though of course he's awesome aside from that.

New excuse, incoming!

Romney: Contributions to Mormon Church Stop Him From Releasing Tax Returns

HOPKINS, Minn. - Mitt Romney has offered a new explanation for his resistance to releasing more than two years of tax returns, telling Parade Magazine that he never intended for the amount of money he gives to the Mormon church to be made public.

"Our church doesn't publish how much people have given," Romney told Parade Magazine in an interview that will appear in the August 26 issue of the magazine.

"This is done entirely privately," he said. "One of the downsides of releasing one's financial information is that this is now all public, but we had never intended our contributions to be known. It's a very personal thing between ourselves and our commitment to our God and to our church."

Ann Romney, who joined her husband for the interview, added, "When Mitt and I give that check, I actually cry."

Anybody buying this? Anyone? Bueller?

This guy is 11 years younger than she is. She's a tattooed, 41-year-old, twice divorced, apparently bipolar (according to her), mother of 4 (one adult autistic son, two others with other issues, and one with no issues that I know of). If it actually works, I'll be surprised. Until then, I haven't really talked to her about her husband because I don't want to be part of another one of her bad decisions.

We were all baptized Catholic and went to Easter service with my grandparents when we were kids, but that was it on any type of religious upbringing. God was never talked about in my house and religion wasn't practiced. We do come from Mormons dating back to around the 1850s or so.

That's right -- Mormons are required to tithe. It's considered a commandment directly from God. Obviously, they don't get thrown in jail if they don't tithe, but it's not just a request, it's mandatory in their religion.

That's why Romney shouldn't be allowed to get away with claiming this as "charity." It's not charity if it's mandatory.

I stopped listening to him a long time ago. I really don't like screaming my self hoarse at the TV or radio, it makes me look crazy and that's how people like that make me fell. Like an out of control pendulum, the Republican Party has swung so far away from the center of reasonableness that its completely out of sight. Its one of a dozen reason I left the Republican Party and until they wise up and go back to where they use to be I'll never join them again...I long for the more centrist days that I remember the Republican Party was when I joined.... More relevantly, a church isn't a damned charity. Gilding whatever liturgical object you care to name isn't a charitable cause. If LDS demanded he give 10% of his total earnings to, say, the Gates Foundation, and he did so, this would be a very different conversation.

'Conflate is putting it mildly.

"I think the most recent year is 13.6 or something like that," Romney said.

Then he continued: "If you add in, in addition, the amount that goes to charity, why the number gets well above 20 percent."

He adds in the 10% tithe, refers to it as 'charity,' then adds it into his taxes. And says nothing about it being a requirement.

The best way to explain Romney's statements on his taxes is still short and sweet - 'lies.'

Some interesting details about the Mormon church finances and tithing.

The UK requires financial disclosures, and one such listing gives a glimpse into the church operations there.

re: #169 engineer cat

has mitt proffered up a lame-ass sorry excuse for a reason explanation for his birther crack yet?

Here's one:

A campaign aide told BuzzFeed, on condition of anonymity, that Romney did not plan the birth certificate joke in advance, and that it was an "off-the-cuff reference to him being a homegrown guy of Michigan" that was wrongly interpreted by the press.

If you don't like that one, I'm sure they'll issue a completely different one in an hour or two.

RNC On Romney’s Birth Certificate Joke: ‘He Was Stating A Fact’

After Mitt Romney's birth certificate joke at a Michigan campaign rally Friday led to outrage from the Obama campaign, a top RNC official told MSNBC he doesn't see what the big deal is.

"Look, it's -- I mean, it's a light-hearted moment," Sean Spicer, RNC communications director, said. "He was stating a fact. He's proud of the fact he was born in Michigan, that Mrs. Romney was born in the area."

Really? So they never asked to see his birth certificate for his passport, visa, and when he was in France?

RIP The Count. Jerry Nelson, who performed The Count and other famous characters on Sesame Street and the Muppets has passed away at age 78.

Besides The Count, Nelson also created such indelible Muppet characters as Mr. Snuffleupagus, a shy pachyderm friend to Big Bird; Sgt. Floyd Pepper, bassist of the Electric Mayhem Band; Dr. Julius Strangepork, science officer on the USS Swinetrek; Camilla the Chicken, the other half of Gonzo's inter-species relationship; Lew Zealand, master fish-boomerangist; and Robin, sweet nephew to Kermit the Frog. Nelson also played Gobo Fraggle, the lead subterranean creature of "Fraggle Rock."

194 HappyBenghazi  Fri, Aug 24, 2012 1:17:45pm

They're claiming it's just that Mitt was going on about how proud he is to be from Michigan. Then why make the stupid birth certicate crack especially when you have large numbers of people in your party not to mention people speaking on your behalf who believe in that conspiracy. The whole this was just an innocent joke spin by Romney's campaign is hilarious. Dumbasses.

News reports are describing the Empire State Shooter as a "cat lover". As a cat lover, should I be offended?

After all, they don't mention if he likes ice cream, or walks on the beach (for example.)

What are they trying to imply?

re: #146 Charles Johnson

That's right -- Mormons are required to tithe. It's considered a commandment directly from God. Obviously, they don't get thrown in jail if they don't tithe, but it's not just a request, it's mandatory in their religion.

That's why Romney shouldn't be allowed to get away with claiming this as "charity." It's not charity if it's mandatory.

The Mormon Church requires tithing to be allowed into temple. However they don't actually verify that the amount tithed equals 10% by requiring the submission of corroborating tax returns. The reason Mitt may be reluctant to release his tax returns may have more to do with his misrepresenting his income to the Church over the years and shortchanging them on their due. I see no reason at all for him to be embarrassed over the amount he's been giving them unless it isn't enough.

199 Mich-again  Fri, Aug 24, 2012 1:20:13pm

There is a big statue of Custer down the road in his hometown of Monroe Michigan. I've always found it disturbing that a guy whose life was devoted to slaughtering other people deserved a statue in the middle of town. I can't recall seeing anyone posing for pictures there. Everyone makes fun of Custer and he is not revered as some kind of hometown hero. I suppose there are some dolts out there who honor Custer's "service", but until this story, I never saw or heard of one.

Doubtful, imho

As a leader in the church at various times (and various positions) and as high profile as he is I doubt he'd be given those positions of authority within the churches structure unless the leadership knew he gave at least the suggested 10%

He hasn't held a position of leadership in the Church since 1994. Try again.

So he gave up/ cut down on tithing then?

Again, doubtful

re: #202 sattv4u2

So he gave up/ cut down on tithing then?

Again, doubtful

Also doubtful is the idea he wants to keep secret how much he actually tithed because the sheer amount is so great. As long as it equals 10% of his pre-tax income as he's claimed then he's in the clear. He's only in trouble if the tax returns show him to be a liar.

Seriously?

Pat must be one of those guys who thinks the Trail of Tears was a great moment in US history.

Don't the new American History texts in Texas claim that the Trail of Tears was a good thing, because it brought so many Indians to Christianity?

I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

Probably should have omitted that last sentence. Obviously, each of the Navajo Codetalkers was a military asset, which each partnered Marine was duty-bound to protect, so he could do his job. But the Code had an even higher priority, to be protected "at all costs". What an awful moral dilemma. Windtalkers trailer.

Furthermore, Romney and Biden disrespected the memories of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee when they spoke at the recent NAACP Convention.

Why do I get the feeling that most conservative politicos lack that little voice in their heads which tells them to hold their tongues, lest their stupid remarks come back to bite them in the ass?

re: #126 engineer cat

don't you know that oil comes from god?

Some creationist types believe that the planet produces oil in limitless quantities, so we will never run out of this precious God-given fluid. The concepts that (a) petroleum came from decaying organic material from millions of years ago and (b) logically it is thereby a finite resource do not compute in their benighted minds.

212 What, me worry?  Sat, Aug 25, 2012 7:21:38am

A friend of mine (Oglala Sioux) who lived in Atlanta once told me his son came home from school crying because after history class, he was tormented by some children who were praising Custer. My friend told him, "Don't feel too bad, son. We won that one."
